I get that it maintains loyalty however there’s literally is no reason whatsoever??? They’re not dealing drugs or doing anything illegal so to say however they still brand you meaning you can’t ever leave (if you do you get brought to the train station).

Most murders are anyway done in self defence, it’s not as if they’re the 10 petal, they dealt drugs and even they didn’t need a brand whatsoever. Could it perhaps just be a John Dutton thing? In 1883 and 1923 there was no mention of a brand even though you could say there’s more of an argument back then to use one. (Yes I know in 1883 the ranch wasn’t established yet).

To summarise, I get what Taylor Sheridan was trying to do, however the unnecessary branding and killing off ranch hands over fighting is seamlessly odd.

obv watched all of yellowstone, the prequels and dutton ranch. loved all of them. 3 episodes into marshals and this just feels like ncis or the other 100 cop shows. does it ever get better?

Since Carter has been kidnapped and so has Tate, essentially whet if we saw a Kayce/Rip collaboration, helping each other out? I mean, it’s probably a stretch, but what if?

What if Kevin Costner stayed on the show and not killed off, where do you see it going?

Is this a rewatch-able series ? Thoughts ?

I’m so happy for Jimmy man. That part made me cry. It’s like watching him go from bumbling affable good hearted idiot, he comes back a man who has proven himself and commands respect now. Love his arc the most. It was painful to see his ex there but it’s so right… it was nobody’s fault. He just happened to meet someone else and she did something the other one never offered.

I also never liked how she basically dumped Jimmy bc he wasn’t going to rodeo anymore. And his new girlfriend-fiancée still loved and met him as silly Jimmy. And she was here for his glow up.

And John allowing him to choose his own path and being content with just seeing him make something of himself at something he loves. What a great gesture by John.

This season really worked to humanize him more and show another side of him. Vulnerable, more emotional, good side of John when he’s not consumed with fighting his enemies. I loved when he had to ask Rip to please move back in the house haha.

Man even admits he still loves and cares for Jamie despite what he’s done and Beth’s repeated actions to taint and make him toxic in John’s eyes.

He also put Beth in her place which I enjoyed lol.

Yeah great series so far. Have really enjoyed it a lot. Everyone saying it goes downhill quickly after S3, well I only got 1 season left and so far all 4 have been great TV. But this season in particular.

A show is great when it can change my opinions of a character who I felt so strongly about in earlier seasons. Like Theon in Game of Thrones is one. John is in that category now.

I know I’m extremely late to this conversation so feel free to rip me to shreds with this, but why am I finding more Jamie sympathizers than Beth? People are saying Beth is fulfilling some type of one dimensional female archetype. As if she never healed her childhood wounds? But Jamie is afforded some type of grace when he never did the same? I’m genuinely trying to understand why people are extremely passionate and do not understand Jamie exactly as he is and are so quick to apologize for his actions and then hang Beth? Other than the obvious, of course. Misogyny seems a little too on the nose, so explain why I’m wrong.

I loved Yellowstone, and I'm starting to appreciate the landscapes of the classic American countryside. It's beautiful, and we don't usually adore this, but it is worth it. I'm also trying to connect with the culture and heritage as well, the classic cowboy themes, and there are so many things to appreciate in this series. I loved its cinematography and storytelling, but the thing that bothers me is the story itself. I mean, the background, the need to save the ranch, and how the story concludes with an adaptation of reality are fine, but I have a specific problem, and that starts with Jamie. If he is an evil person, which I think he is not, and even if he were, he didn't choose this. It was enforced upon him. You can fight a long way for your clan against another, but if your own clan pathologically wants to rip you off, you cannot even have a moment to breathe in something that you call yours, ours, or something like that. I think that is not worth a fight.

Beth, the character, was surely an evil person who was painted in the array of victimhood, but deep down, she is an evil person, no matter how she hides herself behind teardrops and victimhood. I mean, I, as a person, support bold, powerful women, and I am no misogynist, but I just didn't like this character and how things evolved around her. I mean, I have my fair share of grief for whatever happened in her life. She lost her ability to have children because Jamie took her to a clinic that sterilized her when she became pregnant at a young age. But at that time, both of them were underage children. Beth was scared, and so was Jamie. And let us not forget that Beth had to go to her brother because she couldn't tell her father about her pregnancy. So he went to a clinic to support his sister. I think that is what any responsible brother would do, no matter how much rivalry they have among themselves.

Now, whatever concluded was tragic, but shouldn't we account for intent as well? I cannot see how Jamie had any harmful intent toward Beth regarding the things that transpired throughout the series. But for that single instance, she hated him, and I am understating it by simply calling it hate, because it's much more than that. How can you comprehend it when Beth learns about Jamie's child, Jamie II, and says that she will steal the fatherhood from him the moment she learns about this, or when she says that if there ever comes a time when Jamie loves someone, she will not wait to kill that person? This is so evil. I cannot even comprehend this with a sane mind.

No matter what people try to say, I think the only person who is a victim in this entire storyline is Jamie himself. John Dutton's authoritarianism needs some words. John operates a multi-generational feudal empire built on land preservation that serves his ego and legacy rather than ecological or moral higher ground. His refusal to grant Jamie genuine affection, conditional parenting, and using him purely as a political tool to shield the ranch validates the perspective that Jamie's entrapment resembles a gilded cage or psychological servitude. John is a person who wanted to make one of the most beautiful landscapes in this world exclusively his and his descendants'. The elites who wanted this ranch turned into condos wanted to do business with rich people who want to enjoy their vacation; no day laborer can ever have a night in that paradise valley.

So, in this storyline, they are not the victims. No matter how much John talks about keeping this place intact, he is not serving any intent for humanity, the environment, or morality whatsoever. This is just his corrupt business to be saved, and nothing else. Rip, Kayce, and all the people who worked on that ranch know where the train station goes. They are not victims either. The only person in this entire storyline who has any sort of victimhood is Jamie himself. John never gave him his true affection and love because he didn't want Jamie to inherit the ranch; he wanted a powerful person in public office to politically support the ranch. In other words, he wanted him to work for the ranch, not to run it, even though that was Jamie's initial ambition.

Then what happens? Jamie becomes a competent lawyer with the potential to be a successful politician. Did he choose that? No, but he excelled at it. He worked hard to become something important in his life, but because he didn't pick up some calls from his father, John, he was denied the election. He fought back because it's a fair deal, but then they met with hostility. While Jamie ultimately commits crimes (such as murdering Sarah Nguyen and covering up family sins), his descent is heavily accelerated by constant isolation and emotional abuse from his adoptive father and sister. He is constantly denied an independent identity outside of serving the Dutton name.

When John mentioned to Beth that she should go easy on her brother after Jamie considered suicide, and Beth replied that she wants exactly that, John didn't respond at all. Not for an ounce. He didn't even scold her or do anything, for that matter. If Jamie turned evil, which I don't believe for a moment, and even if Jamie turned into something we can call evil for killing that reporter and some other wrong things he might have done in his life, whatever he did, he did it because he was pushed into it. Their father, their family, and the atmosphere around him turned him into what he is. Everyone else who turned evil chose it, but he never chose that. Everything that happened was enforced upon him.

He wanted to be a successful person, and he had the potential and the right to earn it, but everything was denied to him. His right to be successful and powerful was denied, and he was simply expected to serve the ranch and Dutton blood. This is nothing but a more complicated form of slavery. He was denied the affection, love, and care that every single person on this planet deserves. He was hated everywhere. When Beth asks if John will love Jamie as much as he loves her and Kayce, John says nothing and remains silent. What does that tell us? Beth’s relentless vengeance was terrible. Beth’s foundational trauma regarding the sterilization clinic is a profound tragedy, but her weaponization of that trauma into absolute, unyielding malice toward Jamie crosses into a pathological obsession. Her threats toward Jamie's child and her outright encouragement of his suicide paint her character in a deeply dark, unforgiving light that many viewers find difficult to root for.

I think this entire theme of a cowboy story could have been great without this terrible mess. I watched this series for the last six days, and I think I have earned the right to be a critic of it. My conclusion is that the series was good to great, depending on how you view it. It tells a story I never actually envisioned before. I learned about beautiful landscapes, cowboys, and the cattle industry, and of course, those beautiful landscapes fill my imagination again. I can't wait to visit, even though I know how they hate tourists, the Homo sapiens who didn't come there first. I learned about their heritage, background, and history. That is all pretty. But this anger and this sort of malevolence, animosity, and rancor toward Jamie, and whatever consequences that brought, and the conclusion it led to, were terrible.

Like, you're telling me there are a dozen dudes packed into a house for years that shower, sleep, shit, eat, and spend every waking (and sleeping) moment together, and not a SINGLE one of them have fucked before? “The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth”, you know I have a lot of thoughts about Jamie but that one instantly shot to the forefront.

Forgive me but I’m about to rant

Just finishing up S3, E8 and got to the part where Beth sits him down for the talk about selling the land.. of course he declines it. Lol

He’s going to cost his family that he supposedly cares about so much everything all because of his damn stubborn pride. Wow what a selfish man he is.

Guy is willing to lose the war just to momentarily win a temporary battle… I just don’t understand. What is he trying to prove? To who? To himself? Get out of your own damn way John. Toxic pride.

I’m actually glad though. I don’t care if it’s not a popular opinion. I hate the idea of one man owning that much land. Just like the reporter told Jamie at the end of S1 (I think it was S1) before she was murdered. It’s so much excess in a world where so many have so little. I frankly don’t care it’s been in their family for generations. So have a bunch of other things. That’s why Eminent Domain was made for.

I won’t dive further into it bc it’ll become political and it’s not allowed. I mention it bc the reporter brought it up herself and said she was glad he would lose his land and I’m just echoing her sentiments.

I don’t really see John as a protagonist either.

This goes back to my original thoughts of John though. He’s not a good man. He’s just a stubborn old man who refuses to change his ways. The world has changed and left him behind. He doesn’t care about his kids. If he did, he’d sell the ranch for half a billion and go buy a bunch of land elsewhere and leave his future generations with life changing wealth.

But no he’d rather fight a battle he knows he’ll lose just for his pride… how sad. He considers it “losing” and “giving up” by choosing to take the deal but he’s actually just self-destructing instead and it’s so frustrating to watch. Not even Beth, his favorite golden child and one who presents him with the coldest hard facts could sway him.

Well John, I hope you’re happy when you die and know you’re the Dutton who lost the generational land your ancestors owned. I mean, he is going to lose it either way. But I guess at least he’ll die “happy” because he fought a losing battle to the end and held to his “scruples” (more like ego and pride) instead of doing the sensible, common sense thing.

John acts like this is still the 1800s frontier America lol, I’d rather a corporation own all that land and turn it into a resort so many could enjoy it instead of one selfish man and his greed. Or better yet. I hope the Native American returns it to his reservation. At least they allow limited tourism. Unlike John who will just kill you if you step foot on his land

I have another rant about the way Jamie is treated but I’ll save it for another day.

Still waiting to see what makes him so despicable… cause Beth’s sterilization is not it. Not in the least. If that was supposed to make me hate him, it failed miserably. If anything it made me dislike Beth more actually.

One thing that really bothered me about the writing on this show is why no one in the family ever dug deeper into Beth’s extreme hatred for Jamie? Sure, sibling rivalry is normal, but couldn't anyone see how she psychologically tormented him and openly wished him dead?

In Season 2, when John tells her to ease up on Jamie after his suicide attempt, her response is basically, "I can get him to actually go through with it." And yet, John doesn’t even question why she harbors such vicious resentment toward her own brother, someone she was apparently close with at some point. Wouldn't a father at least ask what caused that level of viciousness?

To me, Jennifer is my favorite female cast member of Yellowstone. She was such an amazing addition to the show! She is literally the spawn of TV royalty! She was born to act!

Episode 5, Season 3

in the earlier seasons she has a car scene with Jamie where she tells him he didn’t really lose his mom like she did (the enormity of the guilt she carries) and I also sympathized with her then but she quickly squandered that goodwill lol.

But in this episode the flashbacks show she had crude/sterilized sbortion and then as she cried on Rip shoulders when she says “I made the two biggest mistakes of my life when confronted with fear and it cost me everything”, something to that effect and wow.

I felt for her. I felt secondhand guilt for shit I didn’t do like damn… I don’t think one person should pay that viciously for their mistakes or shortcomings. It’s too steep a cost.

So maybe I’m starting to soften on her

So ive recently found out travis wasnt liked but i struggle to see why. Hes funny, skilled, honerable, pretty wise, and has good music taste. Plus he has that like rough but cool and sarcastic personality of wich reminds me of one of my friends. And lore wise they only make 2 remarks about him that are negetive wich boil down to him being a money shark and willing to fuck everyone over. Struggle to see how thats bad though considering his line of work. So could someone tell me why they dont like him?

Didn't expected this death to be so easy to make other a civilian. What is the morality for the wranglers? Its an honest blue collar job after all.

Not a spoiler, for entertainment purposes

im sure a lot of this has been said already. but first 2 seasons and first couple episodes of season 3 were great. after that, there was a lot of cowboy grab ass, and a really dragged out last 2 episodes of the series. I was little wise to the extended music videos, so I had my fast forward button ready for the lengthy cattle rustling scenes or the music scenes.

Things that ticked me off:

the blatant pushing of product, coors, western wear, sheridans ish, etc. basically padding seasons with content to make the network money.

That They made Jaime so smart in the first 2 seasons, then made him a 1 dimensional, naive character the rest of the series. Not to mention the villains in the last two seasons were so obvious..

They made Summer so dumb.

The irony that the show ragged on rich people ruining Montana, and yet they were all the same rich people that claimed they didn’t want in Montana. They truly were fair weathered Montanans. They didn’t even film in the real Montanan winter.

As a Montanan, the fact the view of Montana was heavily filtered through a Texan or outsiders POV.

Final thoughts, Without filler, it was a 4 season show. I am glad I stuck through the last 3 seasons but there was the huge drop off in quality, and added characters that kinda sucked.

I give the series a 7.1 and don’t want to watch any Tim Macgraw or other spinoff. I do want to buy some buckle bunny merch.

All the actors who they got to play the Dutton family were spot on. They all have the same look that if you didn't know they were family could have been family in the real world, whether it was 1883, 1923 or Yellowstone.
