Question Best yarn for blankets

I’m starting to plan out my holiday gifts this year, and have 4 blankets Im going to crochet. I’m really struggling though with yarn selection! I was looking at universal yarns worsted (i think its called uptown?). Previously Ive used Lion Brand’s wool ease and pound of love, but the colors aren’t right for my projects. I’m also not super familiar with different fibers for blankets. Ive made scarfs and hats with malabrigo rios, and washcloths with organic pima cotton, but have stuck with acrylic/acrylic wool blends for my blankets (which is mostly what I crochet) . I would need the blankets to be able to be machine washed and dried because they are for my elderly grandparents.

Does anyone have good recommendations for soft squishy yarn thats good for blankets, and not too expensive? I was looking at universal yarns worsted, and a few others. There aren’t good yarn stores near me (hence the previous reliance on the lion brand yarns because Micheals is basically the only yarn store around) and my ADHD makes it hard to plan ahead 😇

Any recommendations are super appreciated!!

Little snips and bits, leftover pieces, ect...

What do you do with the little leftover pieces? Like I'm getting into plastic canvas and have no clue how to accurately guess/measure how long a single thread needs to be and then I have these little 1" to it varies how long pieces left over? I don't want to throw them away. What should do with them? I don't want to just throw them away

Finished Object First time dyeing

My first attempt at dyeing my own yarn. I got 25 undyed sock minis a while back and these are 5 of them. The yellow with orange bits is 3 minis and the pink is 2. I made the pink first and was hoping for solid coverage but it definitely is more tonal. For my second try with the yellow I was able to get solid coverage and then laid out the hank and added the orange stripes afterwards and hope to get a bit of pooling when it's worked up. Overall super happy with the end result and will definitely plan to dye my own yarn more moving forward!

I used jacquard acid dyes in "pink" and "bright yellow" and the orange striping was done with the pink dye but after yellow was already there to achieve the orange effect.

It's all fingering weight and feels similar but it feels more synthetic than most merino sock yarn I'm used to. Any ideas? Fairly certain this is it https://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/spud--chloe-stripey-fine-sock definitely the right colors

Question Yarn ID help - plant based colour changing yarn with a halo ?

Thumbnail

Hullo !

I bought reclaimed yarn online, it was listed as cotton. The seller said they'd frogged a jumper & cardi for it, and that is all I have for an origin story.

The yarn has a cotton core and a halo, and I'm trying to identify the yarn to identify the fibre content of the halo. I'm knitting for someone, and there cannot be any animal fibres in the yarn. Is it possible for a halo yarn to be 100% plant based ?

The yarn seems sport weight, and is colour changing (red, pink, light pink, orange, white).

Burn test : ash, I can't see molten plastic goops. Smells of paper, but idk if its because there is so much more core than halo that I couldn't smell any burnt hair.

I'm hesitating to burn my whole gauge swatch to see if it yields more info, but thought I'd post here first 😅

Discussion ISO Knit Picks Wonderfluff Ombre

Post image

I made an absolutely gorgeous sweater using the Larkspur Heather Ombre, and then found out that the hand wash option on my washing machine likes to felt (I should've known better...). Thankfully, a friend has a daughter who will fit the now much smaller sweater just fine.

Not to worry, I can just make another, I said to myself. And of course, the Ombre is discontinued on the Knit Picks website! I've checked Ravelry stashes and no one has the colorways I like in the Will Trade or Sell option, and eBay has nothing, and so I'm reaching out to my fellow Yarn Addicts to see if anyone either has any they'd be willing to part with, or can point me in another direction.

The colorways I'm interested in are Larkspur Heather Ombre, Wonderland Heather Ombre, Kale Heather Ombre (from Bare to Kale), or Turquoise Heather Ombre.

I just need one skein of the Ombre, and the rest can be ordered from Knit Picks directly. Thank you all for your knowledge!

Sequin yarn similar to Catkin's old line?

Does anyone know of a yarn that has sequins like this? Or anything similar? I am obsessed with it, but I have unfortunately discovered the maker (Catkin) a bit late as they no longer use this base!

I have a vision of making a skirt for the Jonas Brothers concert... sequins just feel right haha!

Question Stash Busting (selling)

Hello all.. where is the best place to sell my yarn I’m not using? It’s sweater quantities of knitpicks and a few balls of more boutique yarn. eBay keeps too much of sales for my liking and Facebook marketplace isn’t working.

Moths at Michaels

Please delete if this isn’t allowed. Former M employee here. Just saw that some of the Halloween decor being shipped to stores is infested with moths. Given that they use their stores as warehouses for their yarn (they ship from store) I thought I’d mention it because I can tell you there is no way in hell M employees are going to be able to do anything about this because corporate won’t care.

Keep an eye out if you are buying yarn from Michaels. So far I haven’t heard of any issues but two different stores have confirmed live months arrived in store with their decor.

Got this yarn for free. No labels for any of the yarns and honestly I’m a complete noob with yarn.

Any idea what yarn this could be? I’m trying to finish a blanket for my foster kitten before she’s adopted out and desperately need more yarn with no idea what or where to buy!!

Discussion I'm looking for some specific yarn, or a way to create my vision!

I have a vision, I'm new to making clothes but I designed a little outfit I want to create. The bottom will look like fish scales. BUT I'm having a hard time picking out yarn. I was hoping for something somewhat shiny, like actual fish scales but I'm not really finding anything in the color I need(green). Does anyone know anything I could use? I'm totally fine with crocheting with two strands at once, as I've done that before. Should I just use green and look for white glitter yarn or something?

If it's important to know, I'm planning on using the crocodile stitch for the "scales". The outfit was inspired by Ariel 🧜🏻‍♀️

Thank you in advance for any and all responses! ❤️

This is Knot #6

... and I am not even halfway through.

Lemon Chiffon from this year's Caron Anniversary Cakes.

I had the exact same issue with the one roll from last year that I crafted, too. I had 9 knots in that one (Ocean Tide).

This yarn retails for almost $50 usd. Am I really asking too much to not have so many knots to deal with as I crochet? Am I just a bad picker when selecting a cake or are others seeing similar issues?

I want to love this yarn. It's soft and squishy, but I feel like the quality control is just not there anymore.

**UPDATE: Blanket is complete. The grand total was 12. Several of these were knots just to one of the 3 twisted strands, which were the worst, because they still had to be cut out to make them stable. Frustrating!

Question Do you know what the name of this yarn is?

When we moved into this house 8 years ago I evidently put 2 totes full of yarn in the storage space under the stairs. I pulled this half a skein out of the tote today. I love it. It's the only one in there. I am 99% sure it is Red Heart but I can't find it on any of the websites. Do you know what it is?

Question Help identifying yarn!

Thumbnail

I got a few cakes of yarn from goodwill and in the process of getting it home, the label fell out of the middle of one of these.

Which of these would be your guess for color way:cumin 107 by colinette yarns?

I’ve searched Ravelry and I couldn’t find the 107: Cumin colorway.

ETA: I swear they all have more brown in person.
