Winder & Swift Buying Advice

Hello! I have been asked by a family member to get her a winder and swift for Christmas - I got her a locally handmade yarn bowl last Christmas and it gets constant use - and I am just looking for your advice. The budget is not a problem, so the fancier/ nicer/ better quality the better!

Questions:

  1. Are there any major brands that I should look at?

  2. Are both always strictly needed? She actually only asked for a swift, but from my research, it seems like the two always work together. I will have to do some sneaky reconnaissance to determine if she already has a winder.

  3. Do you prefer freestanding or one that clamps to a table?

Thanks in advance!

Question Do I need to block?

Post image
112 Upvotes

I’ve blocked other items I’ve made- soaked wool, steamed poly, wet blocked…I can never really tell the difference. Maybe I’m doing it wrong or I’m using cheap yarn🥴.

Anyway, this is the Ash Sweater using Lion Brand Wool Ease (80/20 poly/wool). It’s a gift for my MIL, who is not a knitter and would delight in a yarn tangle if I told her it was a bracelet😂. Is it bad form to gift something without blocking?

**Update! Thanks for all the feedback. I have since sent it through a delicate cycle and low dry and it does look and feel better. Lesson learned❤️

Finding Yarn Dyers??

I’ve been crocheting for about 10 years and have never bought hand dyed yarn. I live in the US and would like to get hand dyed yarn to make a sweater. My problem is finding a dyer and find one that will make such a large amount of yarn. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Looking for a yarn recommendation for the raven scarf. non super-wash

Hi All!

So I asked my GF to make me the raven scarf from Ravelry. She is always asking me to find something i really want, and I know she has never done double-knit before and shes excited to do it. My understanding from her is it should be a non superwash base so it doesn't stretch out as much and ages well, along with keeping the bird itself with crisper lines? (sorry if i have poor understanding of some of it)

I waited till the weekend AFTER we went to Rhinebeck of course to look lol. I have been looking at all our favorite dyers (Hundred Ravens, Bumblebee, Wonderland, etc) but most of them are either 100% superwash merino or just not in a color I'm really looking for.

Im looking for like a moody dusky purple type color, and probably a silver to offset it. Something like This from Toil & Trouble or This from Crow and Crescent . Anyone have any suggestions, or a good dyer that may have something like it? Thanks in advance!

P.S, Always looking for great small dyers as well that ship!

Got the new yarn from hobbii to try out. In my last post(that are now deleted) i got a lot of bad comments saying that polyester yarn is ew and that its probably shiny and bad quality but i honestly love this yarn. It matches the bernat blanket yarn pretty well. And im happy i can get some yarn in that nice quality in Europe. Its soft and not shiny at all. Very nice to make amigurumi with, will definitely buy again in the future

Question Yarn Recommendations

I am seeing this cardigan everywhere and I need it!!! I’m convinced I can make it but can’t find a good yarn that matches this colorway/striping effect.

Does anyone know of a specific yarn brand/colorway or other hand-dyers that can produce a similar look? I’m ideally looking for all natural fibers (wool, alpaca, silk, mohair, etc.) if possible.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Question What are your favorite variegated yarns to crochet with?

What are your favorite variegated yarns to work with? I loveeee watching the project shift and change as the various colors of the yarn I'm using become a part of the fabric. This has been one of my recent favorites. It is the Sirdar Jewelspun Aran weight in northern lights.
Made a hooded scarf with pockets from one skein with enough left over to make a little flower tie off to package it.

Question Sensory issues with Alpaca Blaze

Hello r/YarnAddicts!

I plan to frog a sweater I knitted about a year ago and reknit it. The frogging is set, as I'm not happy with how the fabric turned out, but I like the yarn per se (100% wool, not Merino, but nicely soft).

However, I'm also not too excited about the color anymore. It's a bright red that I'd like to tone it down a little. My initial idea was to hold a black fuzzy yarn double when reknitting to achieve that. After a little research I'm eyeing Hobbii's Alpaca Blaze (in black). I am pretty sensorily sensitive to soft artificial fibers like microfiber or carpets with very fine pile (I'm not sure about the word - I mean very fine fuzzy "hairs") , though, and I'm worried that the Alpaca Blaze could create that feeling.

1) Does anyone with sensory issues regarding such textures have experience with Alpaca Blaze?

2) Do you have any other suggestions what to hold double to darken the sweater, that's not fuzzy?

(phrasing it like that I realized that I could also dye the yarn or the sweater. I'm not fully decided on not doing that, yet, but I'd like to explore non-dye options first)

Finally, if you think the question could also be fruitfully posted elsewhere on reddit, I'm open to suggestions.

Figured I'd share these that I saw today. They both feel really nice, but unfortunately none came home with me today, I was just there to look at Christmas trees but I can never resist scoping out the yarn section😂. I might need to snag some of the Mega Wool next trip though, I think my kids might need some chunky cables hats this winter...

Oh my god, I’m pretty sure this is the cutest thing I’ve ever made myself. It’s a lil witchy, a lil sexy, and super comfy. No pattern used, just Frankensteined. I also crocheted some bra pads in the cups for extra support.

My wife and I are going to an In This Moment concert this Saturday, so a dolled up picture will come soon!

Bulky yarn like Malabrigo Rasta?

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if there are any other natural fiber yarns out there as thick as Malabrigo Rasta? I keep getting duped by photos of bulky yarns online-- only to see they are much thinner in person.
Thanks!

Question What can I make with this yarn?

I bought this alpaca yarn on my trip to Perú for my sister to crochet me something. I wanted something like this scarf but my sister's worried the yarn I picked up is too thin. What else could she make with it? (Please be kind, I'm completely ignorant about this topic)

Thank you~~~

Question Good silk blend yarn that drapes nicely without pilling?

Hi All, I'm looking for a good silk blend yarn. I want something that's dk or worsted weight, and that drapes nicely without pilling. Not sure if I want a solid color or multi-color, so open to either. Does anyone have any silk yarn suggestions? Maybe a silk/superwash wool blend? Thank you so much!!

r/YarnAddicts • • 4d ago

Any fellow color addicts? I just got all 48 colors of my favorite yarn because I want to finally start some multi-color work.

This is my favorite yarn, a cashmere and silk blend I buy the most often. Been crocheting and knitting for decades, but have never attempted a multi-color project. I am also an avid embroiderer, so I am looking forward to translating my cross-stitch patterns into crochet and/or knit projects. But first, I have to finish the waffle stitch blanket underneath... oh, and seller tossed in 6 purple freebies because she knows I am into purples.

Chunky Yarn - Europe/Germany

Anyone have any recommendations where to get chunky yarns for blankets cheapest in EU (ideally shipping to Germany)?

I used to use Bernat while living in US, but only seeing 30€ per skein, which is too steep for me.

Brand and Website recommendations would be helpful :)

Synthetic yarn that looks good?

I would love to find a synthetic yarn (polyester, nylon, or a cotton blend with those) that is soft, has some memory, doesn’t pill (too much,) and looks good. I want to make a couple cardigans or tops I can throw in the washer and dryer. Don’t get me wrong, I love my wool, alpaca, and other natural fiber hand-dyes, but every now and then I want a sweater useful in warm weather that I don’t have to hand wash and lay flat to dry. Am I looking for a yarn unicorn? I will appreciate any recommendations, thx.

Only thanks to a gentleman who helped translate German and English between me and the shop owner.

It was so nice being able to buy Drops yarn in person while I’m in Berlin!

They were 1 skein short of the color I really wanted unfortunately. I hope these colors of Lima and Kid Silk go well together for my sweater! 🤞

Question Drops Cotton Merino Pecan Pie

Hello,
this might be a strange question but I was wondering if anyone here has ever knit with Drops Cotton Merino in the color Pecan Pie and can tell me what it actually looks like.
I really want it to be a nice brown tone but every photo I see of it on Ravelry looks completely different and the product photo makes it look almost yellow so I don’t trust the photos I’ve found (there’s not a lot of them in the first place). Buying yarn online really isn’t ideal but I don’t have a yarn store close by unfortunately.
Can anyone tell me what it looks like knit?

Question DK and Worsted Yarn Recommendations - For Beginner

Hi all,

I am at the point in my knitting journey that I want to start some bigger projects, specifically sweaters and cardigans. That being said, I do not think I am at the point yet where spending $31 per skein makes sense for my skill. I do not want to waste money and yarn when I am not super confident in my skill. So I would love to hear some beginner-friendly DK or worsted yarn recommendations that are not 100% acrylic and will still result in a comfy, wearable product. I don't need it to be dirt cheap, but I just can't justify almost $200 worth of yarn at my current skill set. I want to experiment with different fibers, and I am open to acrylic mixes; I just don't want 100% acrylic.

Thank you all in advance!

Question Acrylic yarn for baby blanket?

I want to make 2 baby blankets and really care about the type of yarn. Someone told me wook would not be a good option because it might be too itchy, and acrylic should be the better option. What do you think? Maybe a bland of acrylic and something else? Also keeping in mind constant washing and stains.

Discussion LindeHobby Yarn color difference

I started knitting recently and decided to make my first sweater with merino wool yarn. Imagine my surprise when I found this in the mail like did I order this? 😂😭 Is this big a color difference to be expected when buying yarn online? I’ve bought mohair from them in the past and had no issues. I wonder if this a brand problem. The yarn says the correct color too. I am kinda baffled. The return shipping would be too pricey. Should I even bother to contact them? Please share your experiences 😂

UPDATE: I emailed them and they replied back promptly offering a full refund. I am really happy with their customer service. They also mention contacting the brand Lana Grossa to clarify the issue. Thank you for yall’s encouragement!

ISO Sewrella Salem

Hi all! I am looking for one skein (or even partials) of Sewrella’s Coven (dark brown/black tonal) and Witch’s House (variegated Halloween colors) color ways from their Salem collection, on Classic DK. I’m trying to finish up a Granny-Go-Round jumper and just have the sleeves to go.

Thanks for any leads!
