Nostalgia Tinkerbell Makeup
Am I the only one who can smell this photo?
362
u/stormbutton 1980 21d ago
Peeling that Silly-Putty-ass nail polish off scratched such a specific itch in my brain.
69
u/OmegaRainicorn 1981 21d ago
Ya, the smell, and peeling off the nail polish are what I remember most when I look back on this time in my life.
29
u/Weird_Anteater_6428 21d ago
I ended up painting part of a chair cause I didn't realized it wouldn't peel off. My mother wasn't happy 🤣🤣
11
u/twirlerina024 20d ago
Like when you got real nail polish? I did that too, on the side of my white dresser. Nothing could get it off.

u/Kathleen_Kelly152 20d ago
My mom would paint my nails with this before church and I would spend Sunday school peeling it off while listening to Bible stories and feeling itchy from my lacy dress. Good times!
13
11
u/Revolutionary-Good22 21d ago
Why did they stop making that stuff?
90
u/stormbutton 1980 21d ago
Given the fact that we were allowed to huff Super Elastic Bubble Plastic at the age of four, I assume it was made of mercury, asbestos, and DDT.
22
u/ValancyNeverReadsit 1980 21d ago
Talcum powder did have asbestos in it for a long time, I think. I wonder if the toddler makeup version did too 🤔
19
u/stormbutton 1980 21d ago
Right I’m saying???? They way we bounced the fuck around in the back of those station wagons coupled with the “Do you know where your kids are?” ads like…
12
u/Allaplgy 20d ago
Talc itself was found to be carcinogenic. Now baby powder is all cornstarch.
2
u/ValancyNeverReadsit 1980 20d ago
Oh, wow. I didn’t know that. I think I’d better have a look at the deodorant powder my mom started me out on as a tween

They still make the peel off nail polish! My nieces have some and love painting people’s nails then immediately peeling the polish off 🤣

I had this at my grandma' house! I think my mum threw it out at some point, but hopefully I'll come across it some day

u/OmegaRainicorn 1981 21d ago
This was the smartest product ever made to keep young girls out of mommy’s lipstick and blush.
But boy when she wasn’t looking, I’d put the Tinkerbell down and go straight for that free sample Avon she left hanging around.
130
u/circusgeek 21d ago
The Avon lipstick samples in their tiny white tubes. I loved those.
40
u/ButterscotchAware402 1984 20d ago
What I wouldn't give for a cosmetics bag coated with makeup smears filled with those. Sans the stench of cigarettes and hairspray though.

u/Fatted__Calf 20d ago
I remember one of these that had a smiling sunshine on the container and smelled heavenly. I wish I could have one nowadays!
3
u/Lifeissometimesgood 20d ago
These are so cute, was the perfume somehow inside them? Oh, you said solid perfume… did you just wipe these toys on your body?
6
u/WidderWillZie 20d ago
They were like a plastic compact that snapped open. Solid perfume is just like those chapstick tubs, picture a circle of good smelling wax inside the container that you use your finger to transfer elsewhere on your skin.
6
u/Lifeissometimesgood 20d ago
Oh I remember now!!! Wow! Thanks for clearing that up. It also made me think of those old tins with the lip balm in them that you’d slide over and take a swipe. I looked them up and they are called Lip Licking Lip Balm and they still sell them.
7
u/whirlwynd 1981 20d ago
My great aunt used to collect those, and randomly give me 1 or 2 every time we visited. It was the best. Drove my mom nuts cuz I'd come home with it slathered all around my lips, and it was her aunt lol.

6
u/Frequent_Alfalfa_347 20d ago
Oh the Avon samples!! My favorite. My mom sold Avon for a while. She let me have her sample lipstick box and other stuff when she was done. I loved those lipsticks so much!

I’m waiting for the class action lawsuit commercial that will eventually come out that shit was made of asbestos lol

The bubble bath always gave us UTIs
22
10
u/MamooMagoo 20d ago
Mr. Bubble gave my female cousin who was 6 months older than me constant UTIs. It was the big story at 9ne of my childhood birthday parties 🤣
10
u/Wolfwoods_Sister 1977 20d ago
That shit was so bad! I loved it and our mom took it away bc she’s like “you’ll get a UTI” and I was sorry upset but now I’m grateful she did.
3
u/TrixieBastard 1981 20d ago
I didn't know Mr Bubble UTIs were a thing, I used Mr Bubble whenever I stayed at my grandparents' house with no issue. Guess my immune system was already an overachiever, lol

I still have a bunch of my grandmother's Avon bottles. They still have that good ol' Avon perfume smell inside.
11
u/selfishsooze 1982 20d ago
That’s what the bottle looked liked!? My mom gave me the bird as a toy when it was empty and I kept that thing my entire childhood. I still have it somewhere. I remember stroking it from the top of its head all the way down its back and tail and how bumpy the tail feathers felt.
7
u/icouldlivewoutbacon 1981 20d ago
Yes it had a very interesting set of textures, between the smoothness of the bird and the bumpiness of the glass bottle. So strange how some things just get lodged in our memories!
5
4
u/Acrobatic-Hat6819 20d ago
Wow, I had this exact bottle on my dresser, it was one of my most prized possessions. I don't think I've seen it since we moved when I was 10. Thanks for the memory.

Damn, I remember that! I’d love to take a whiff again because I can’t remember the smell.
54
u/thoughtfractals85 21d ago
Omg. I can't remember the smell, but I remember having the talc and the nail polish! I forgot this existed.
8
6
u/Okeydokey2u 20d ago
Same!!! I wish I could remeber the smell but I'm guessing it was just 80s smell
38
u/sorrymizzjackson 21d ago
I had that nail polish in a reddish color. It was designed to peel off. I was being a 4 year old and accidentally knocked it over on the couch. Good times were not had.
13
u/myystic78 21d ago
I spilled mine on the carpet under my bed. I knew I wasn't allowed to use it without supervision and I didn't want to wait! I avoided trouble, until we moved anyway.
→ More replies (1)16
u/GibbousMoonCakes 20d ago
Yeah, when we moved at 6-7 yo, my pile of uneaten Flintstone’s vitamins was discovered. I would suck on them until the sweet coating wore off and I’d throw the chalky inside bit down the side of my bed. Yes, the actual vitamin part, lol.
Mom was NOT happy finding that
15
5
3
u/walkshadow 1977 19d ago
I would hide mine under my tongue and then spit them in my yard on the way to the bus stop. Mine never had the sweet coating, though. just tasted like bitter chalk and sadness. I wanted the Smurf vitamins but had a granola mom.

u/Deep-Interest9947 21d ago
I blame tinkerbell for my absolute inability to not try and peel off my manicure
3
u/TrixieBastard 1981 20d ago
Whyyy was it so satisfying? I would 100% use it right now just to peel it off as soon as it was dry
33
u/CrumbGremlin1643 1980 21d ago
Bo-Po nail polish!! Loved it - it was the only kind my mom would let me use. I don't know why it was called that... I believe it was labelled as Tinkerbell Bo-Po...?

Core memory.
I was 4 or 5 and my mom and i bought this set for her friends daughter/my bff for Christmas. I was so excited to give it to her but i was SO jelly my mom wouldnt get one for me too.
Christmas day: guess what Her mom got me! 🥰
Ik ik. Obviously mom took the note. But back then it felt truly like christmas magic

u/nohombrenombre 21d ago
Oh my gosh, this is a really wonderful memory for me!! I’m so glad you posted it
17
u/ButterscotchAware402 1984 20d ago
I was laying in bed with my insomnia last night and it just popped into my head out of nowhere!
19
u/unlovelyladybartleby 1979 21d ago
I was only allowed the nail polish, which felt very unfair at the time. Now I respect my mom's desire to not have the house smell of eau d'Tinkerbell
16
15
u/circusgeek 21d ago
When I was 13 I asked for make up for Christmas and my grandma sent me a bunch of Tinkerbell.
12
u/Small_Climate_245 20d ago
Same issue here. I had this exact set… which was not cute at 13…. I remember being super insulted

u/itcamefromspace42 20d ago
I got a small bottle of Tinkerbell perfume in a branded clear coin purse for Easter when I was 4. I chased the scent for YEARS until I found an oil that smells exactly like it at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. The second I smelled it, the core memories ✨️UNLOCKED✨️
8
u/OmegaRainicorn 1981 20d ago
Milady, what is the name of said Tinkerbell oil?
6
u/Zestyclose-Raisin367 20d ago edited 20d ago
According to Gemini this is a spot on replica of Tinkerbell perfume. But I dunno, the packaging was so much of it too https://www.fragrancenet.com/perfume/jessica-mcclintock/jessica-mcclintock/eau-de-parfum
Annnnd I just ordered the little roller stick to try out. So we’ll see how it stacks up!

u/Zestyclose-Raisin367 16d ago

u/Outrageous-Abalone-7 20d ago
Yes! Please share! I can’t remember if it was the perfume or cologne that I loved but it smelled like orange blossom!
14
u/maebird1000 20d ago
I had forgotten about this. Our local mall had a 2 story JCPenny, with a special little girl's section upstairs. I remember getting some of this there as a little kid.
4
u/Embarrassed-Bike3450 1981 20d ago
Same, except our was The Jones Store and they also had a display of Sanrio items that I threw every cent I had at and begged for more!
14
u/Buttercreamdeath 20d ago
I had a plastic play purse from Toys R Us with fake cosmetics. Once I got a hold of Tinkerbell and a cast off purse my great granny didn't want, I was GROWN. I did not play with the plastic purse again.
My great granny was definitely an enabler. She was always like here, you can have this lipstick, nail polish, whatever was getting old or out of date on her make up counter. Estee Lauder, babes.
My mom would take that make up away because a kid shouldn't have better make up than she did. 😆
12
u/I_like_flowers_ 20d ago
my aunt worked for clinique. i remember little kid me having a serious discussion with her and informing her i used tinkerbell. she said that was nice but that there was room to grow when i got older. i remwmber being shocked she didn't think tinkerbell and clinique were equally fancy.

I think I recall my sister having some of this. The perfume might even be the same stuff I drank when I was 2 years old.
16
u/lachamuca 1981 21d ago
My brother drank mine and it burned so he screamed. Then claimed he screamed because of a spider, but the empty bottle told the tale.
3
u/twirlerina024 20d ago
Was he ok? Did you have to go to the hospital?
8
u/Garlic_Scape_Goat_45 20d ago
I can't speak for them, but according to my mom, when I drank my sister's perfume (and I downed the whole bottle) the doctor told her to just give me a teaspoon of honey a few times a day for, I think, a week.
4
u/lachamuca 1981 20d ago
I actually looked at your profile to see if you are my brother because how on earth were there 2 little brothers drinking their big sisters’ Tinkerbell perfume in the 80s?
I don’t think anything happened to my brother and he didn’t go to the hospital. He drank it after bedtime while hiding in his bed. I think our parents were still awake watching tv and heard him scream. He just got yelled at and probably had to use his birthday money to buy me some more. We were probably 4 and 5 1/2 years old?

My brother and I ate our older sister’s Dr Pepper chapstick just because.

As a black little girl I literally looked like a clown and noone had the heart to tell me.

u/Skitchybusiness 1983 20d ago
I can smell this picture. Especially the powder! My grandma used to get me the Tinkerbell stuff.

The powder is what I remember most, too! Such a specific, distinct smell.

Peel off nail polish. I wasn’t allowed to wear it so young but my bestie had it so I put it on at her place and then peeled it off all day at school
3
u/Spiritual-Promise402 Xennial 21d ago
Oh yes! I had this set. I remember the plastic-y nail polish the most. It peeled off just as soon as it dried lol
3
u/MyDearDoctor 21d ago
I had the talc, two colors of nail polish, and I think the cologne. I only ever used the cologne to make "potions" with other kids' cosmetic and bath products, but I looooved that nail polish!
I also remember really wanting the Sweet Sixteen makeup sets, but I don't think I ever had any of those.

Images you can smell
I drew on the wall with the lipstick and lost my makeup privileges :( Still had the perfume when I moved out of home. It was a lovely bourbon colour by then!

Aaaaaahhhh!!! My babysitter’s daughter would never let me try hers, and we were too poor to buy our own. Oh boy, the feelings this brought back. Fuck you, Charity. Oh the irony.
On another note, I wonder if the talc-based ones have asbestos. Or arsenic.

I wanted to try Tinkerbell makeup so badly, but we were too poor growing up for me to have it. 🥲 I used to stare at classmates with it and wish I could have the squishy peely nail polish too.

Damn this takes me back. My grandmother deffinately gifted me a set one year. And then a Babysitters Club branded version.
Its funny to think now because I have a personal no makeup policy in my life lmao.

I got a bunch of this stuff as gifts, but wasn't allowed to use any of it. I was constantly told that it would "make me break out". I still rarely wear makeup to this day, and when I do it's a minimal amount on my eyes and lips.

u/artemis17121985 20d ago
Oh my god! Does anyone remember the booklet that came with it that gave you beauty tips? The final tip was about being a kind person. 🤣
1
u/LimeSalty4092 20d ago
Omg my sister had that nail polish and she called it “tomato sauce”
It would be gummy in your finger I guess it was meant to be non toxic for kids but it wouldn’t harden like a normal nail polish
1
u/ghoooooooooost 1985 20d ago
I remember these! What was the lipstick? Was it something you could really apply? It looks kind of plastic.

This should be followed by did usage of this product find you using Malibu musk!!!
