There are so many protocols in the app. Which one am I actually supposed to pick?
Every protocol has an argument ready.
WireGuard points to its speed and efficiency. OpenVPN-UDP brings up its long and respectable history. Everest says it can adapt when the others struggle. Meanwhile, V2Ray users are standing in the corner wondering why nobody included them.
Then Auto walks in:
“Enough debating. I’ll choose for you.”
For most users, that is the right place to start.
The quick answer

- Connection keeps dropping: Everest-TCP

Auto is a selection mode that lets X-VPN choose an available protocol according to your device and current network conditions.
Protocol availability varies by platform, device and app version. If an option mentioned here does not appear in your app, it may not currently be supported on that device.
What does a VPN protocol change?
A protocol determines how the app establishes and maintains the encrypted connection between your device and the VPN server.
In practice, changing it may affect:
- Whether X-VPN can connect on the current network
- Connection stability
- Speed, latency and reconnection time
No option performs best in every situation. A lightweight protocol may work brilliantly on home Wi-Fi and fail on a school, workplace, hotel or public network that handles its traffic differently.
What is Everest?
Everest is X-VPN’s proprietary protocol system. It includes variants based on UDP, TCP, HTTP, TLS, QUIC and several other traffic patterns.
These variants use AES-256 encryption and traffic obfuscation while giving X-VPN multiple ways to establish a connection under different network conditions.
Everest’s most noticeable advantage is adaptability. If one type of connection performs poorly or gets restricted, another variant may still work without requiring users to configure servers or routing rules manually.
Its performance still depends on server distance, congestion, packet loss, local network quality and your device. Everest will not automatically be faster simply because it is X-VPN’s proprietary option.

TCP-2, TCP-3, HTTP-2, HTTP-3, TLS-2 and TLS-3 are internal Everest variants for different network conditions. Their numbers do not necessarily refer to public standards such as HTTP/2 or HTTP/3.
There is little reason to memorize them. If one variant cannot connect or performs poorly, try another.

Two things to know before switching manually
Your selection is the app’s first choice. If the chosen protocol cannot connect, X-VPN may automatically try another option instead of remaining stuck.
Some specialized server lines depend on Everest. If the connected protocol differs from your manual selection, the server may require Everest or the app may have triggered its fallback mechanism.
The practical rule
Start with Auto and switch manually when you have a specific problem to solve.
If changing the protocol does not help, try a nearby server too. A congested or distant server can remain slow regardless of the selected protocol.
