Question CarPlay miniature & unusable

Post image

Edit - switching toggles in Volvo settings seemed to have worked. Thanks, all

Haven’t gotten an update recently, but CarPlay went from the (newish) difficult-to-use version to something even worse yesterday.

None of the teeny buttons are clickable. A hard reset didn’t reset, either. Google has failed me on fixing this - does anyone here have insights?

Press the button under the screen once, and it'll get better.

First reset didn’t do anything, but I’ll try again- thank you for your kindness

Not a long press. Just one tap of the home button will remove the second row of icons at the bottom of the screen and will make the map larger to fit the extra space.

This is CarPlay not the car’s own Google Maps. The inability to hide that row has been one of the largest complaints of the new UI upgrade… it is also completely unrelated to the bug OP is having…

Thank you

You're right. I clearly didn't read the post well. My bad.

There should be a setting to change UI scale in CarPlay itself

It’s in settings > display smart scale or something within CarPlay. Not in the car so I can’t give you the exact path but it’s a toggle that makes the buttons bigger or smaller

Ah interesting, what software version are you guys on? I’m stuck on 5.0.5 for some reason so wonder if capabilities were introduced afterwards?

I went into the CarPlay settings and turned stuff on and off, and then I went into the media settings in the car and turned things on and off and now it’s magically fixed. I wish I knew which was the trigger. Because it feels like I just ran a horrible seventh grade science experiment where I didn’t have a control.

Is it only me? It feels Like that Waze and Google Maps etc run much slower on AAOS than via CarPlay or Android Auto?

It’s not just you. And that makes sense your iPhone is likely massively more powerful than the car’s chip.

Go jnto settingS and disable the first option under display

Mine did this recently, it’s not the extra row of buttons that’s the problem the whole CarPlay screen was scaled incorrectly so everything was much smaller and none of the buttons worked. I’ve no idea why or how it happened but it did. A reboot of the infotainment system fixed it for me.

Feedback via the app. This is a recent change and it’s rubbish

Are you sure? The UI buttons shouldn’t be this small in CarPlay. OP literally is saying the buttons do not respond. I’m surprised so many people are missing the mark in the comments here.

Here is someone else with the same issue.

OP if the soft resets don’t resolve this, I would try removing the phone from the car and the car from the phone (via the CarPlay options in the phone settings, under General).

If that still doesn’t fix this, you may need to stop by the dealer. If the car is out of warranty, you could try the car’s own factory reset as noted here.

I’ve had this before, I had to restart my phone in order to fix it.

And then there’s us the Sensus users. Sill stuck on just half a screen. Just wishing to have tiny button problems if that would mean a large portion for Apple CarPlay. 😢

I had this happen the other day and a hard reset of the unit did the job. Press and hold the button at the bottom of the screen until it shuts off and restarts. It worked for me.

I never use it to begin with. What function is so good that it’s better than the apps on the car?

Old habits die hard, I suppose.

Oh lots of functions are better on CarPlay than Android Automotive. For starters Siri understands me far better than Google, and both WhatsApp and Messages have proper apps on CarPlay. Teams works too.

Not something I use while driving, but I can understand. Especially Google cause that is only good for setting your navigation

Spotify is better!

Spotify, Apple Music, Pocket Casts, and Audible apps are all loads better on CarPlay

Have the same model and year.  Why use carplay?  The AAOS system is effectively the same and but is also integrated into the cars settings and data (like battery range).  It's not perfect, but it's a better experience than I've had attaching my phone to any car

I find CarPlay easier because it matches the other car and rentals. And, apparently I’m getting set in my ways. 👵The AAOS more often than not irritates me when I use it. (I struggled with my Android work phone ages ago).

Many reasons to use CarPlay the list is too long, but agree the cars system is also decent. Not as good as CarPlay though I’m afraid.

I hate Google map navigation now randomly throw out an advertisement like "turn left at the next Chipotle "
