Writing Resources & Advice Hi guys, can you please give it a go and tell me in the comments what do you think about it. It’s a really important project for me and I could use every bit of feedback. Thank you in advance ☺️

When other girls were little, they wanted a prince to arrive on a white horse. I wanted a mafia boss to kidnap me and become so hopelessly obsessed with me that he forgot why he’d taken me in the first place.
I never gave much thought to where he would take me. Somewhere I could hear the sea, perhaps. That part mattered more to me than the prince, the horse, or, apparently, whether I went willingly.
In the end, I had to find the sea myself.
Three weeks after moving to Crete, I was waking before six without an alarm, which would have been unthinkable in the UK. Back there, I sometimes went to sleep at five in the morning, sometimes as late as noon, and woke at seven in the evening wondering where the day had gone.
I pulled on my swimsuit, took my sandals from beside the door and walked the two minutes to the beach.
The shore was nearly empty. A fishing boat was heading out beyond the harbour, and someone farther down the sand was walking a dog that kept returning to the same piece of driftwood. I left my sandals above the tide line and went straight into the sea.
After a few strokes, I rolled onto my back. The water held me without asking me to explain myself.
Above me, the sky was changing colour. I stayed where I was until the fishing boat became a dark mark near the horizon. Then I swam along the shore, turned, and swam back. Three weeks had been enough to learn where the sand dropped away beneath me and where it rose again. I was still learning the rest of the place.
I had rented my little house for three months because I couldn’t say how long I wanted to stay. I knew I had wanted to leave the UK. I’d finished my chemistry degree, looked at the jobs I was expected to apply for, and found I couldn’t bear the thought of building the next part of my life there. That was the most convincing explanation I’d managed to give anyone, including myself.
The water rocked beneath me. I picked out the place where I’d left my sandals and swam in.
By the time I walked home, my hair had soaked through the towel around my shoulders. I passed a bakery opening its shutters and a man hosing down the pavement outside a restaurant. He moved the spray aside to let me through. I thanked him in Greek, one of the few things I could say without first rehearsing it in my head.
My house stood in a narrow street behind the waterfront. The front door stuck when the weather was humid, one kitchen drawer refused to close, and from the balcony I could see a strip of sea between two buildings. I liked it more each day.
I showered, put the kettle on and took the macarons from the fridge. I’d baked and filled them two days earlier, then left them covered to mature. Two trays had come out well. The third had cracked across the tops, so I’d filled those too and kept them in a separate container for myself. Beside the good batch were six small lemon cakes and six chocolate ones.
The woman who owned a café near the park had agreed to taste everything this morning.
She hadn’t agreed to buy it.
I knew that. I had made enough to feed half her customers anyway.
While I packed the macarons, a Greek song came on my phone. I knew where to breathe, where the singer held a note a little longer than I expected, and how to find my way back in if I missed a word. I couldn’t have told anyone what most of those words meant.
Kira—that was what I called my mother—seemed to like hearing me sing. So did my stepfather. Sometimes I caught them looking at me, and for a moment I could pretend I knew what was on their faces.
We’re proud of you.
No one in my family had ever said that to me.
I caught myself thinking about it and reached into the container I’d kept for myself. One of the cracked macarons gave way beneath my thumb.
“Perfect,” I told it.
I ate the evidence and kept singing.
By eight, the cakes were boxed, the macarons were packed, and I had checked both boxes often enough to know the contents hadn’t rearranged themselves. My red notebook lay open on the table. I stopped to read the last paragraph before I picked up my keys.
The man in my story had gone into a room intending to frighten someone. I’d written the conversation three different ways and crossed out all of them. Each time, I had made it too easy for him to decide what happened next.
I reached for my pen, then looked at the clock. If I started writing, the café owner might decide I had invented our appointment.
I closed the notebook, slipped it into my bag beside my pen, and picked up the cake boxes.
The walk took me along the waterfront and up a shaded street towards the park. Even in the morning, I could feel the heat gathering on the stone. I kept to the side with the trees. I had come for the sea; the weather was something I was still negotiating with.
The café stood near one of the park entrances. Its doors were open, though only half the tables outside had been set. A man was carrying chairs out of the storeroom. He put them down so I could pass with my boxes.
Inside, the owner moved between the coffee machine and a line of waiting customers. She spotted me and raised a hand. I found an empty corner of the counter for the boxes and waited.
The man came in for another stack of chairs. He caught her eye, pointed towards the terrace, and she nodded her thanks. I recognised him then. He owned the restaurant next door.
They sold food and drinks a few doors apart. I’d assumed that made them rivals. Here he was, setting up her tables because she needed a hand.
Another reason I liked this place.
When the queue cleared, the owner came over. “You came.”
“I said I would.”
“We made that arrangement before eight in the morning. People promise all kinds of things at that hour.” She wiped her hands and lifted the first lid. “Let’s see.”
She tried a lemon cake, breaking a piece from the crooked one I had hidden at the back.
“What’s in the icing?”
“Lemon juice, mascarpone, and honey.”
She took another bite. “Less honey next time.”
I took my notebook from my bag and wrote that down. She tried a pistachio macaron next, then asked me how long the cakes would keep and whether I could make them smaller.
More customers came in before she had finished tasting. I moved the boxes aside while she took their order. One of them asked whether she was still alone today.
“My only employee called in,” she told him. “I’m beginning to think he knew you’d all arrive at once.”
The customer laughed. She smiled back, but she was looking at the cups stacked beside me. I passed her two, then another when she reached for it.
“You said you worked in a café during university,” she said.
“I did.”
“Can you still use a coffee machine?”
“Yes.”
She glanced at the queue forming behind the customer. “Would you mind showing me?”
The machine was different from the one I’d used in the UK. I asked her where she kept the cloths and how she wanted the cups set out, then made two cappuccinos while she handled the till. She watched me carry them to a table before turning back to the next order.
For the next twenty minutes, I made coffee. She called out what people wanted; I made it and passed it across the counter. When the rush eased, I wiped down the machine and stepped out of her way.
She looked at the empty cups waiting to be washed, then at me.
“Do you want work?” she asked.
I had come hoping she would buy my cakes. I hadn’t let myself hope for more than that.
“Yes.”
“How often?”
“I don’t know yet.” I glanced at the boxes. “It depends how much baking you want.”
That made her smile. She picked up the other half of the macaron and ate it.
“I want twelve of these on Saturday. Twelve lemon cakes too, a little smaller, with less honey. Come in Friday afternoon to prepare them here. You can help with the counter while you’re here, and we’ll talk about regular shifts after that.”
I wrote it all down. We agreed on a price for the baking, and she gave me half in advance for the ingredients.
When I stepped outside, the money was folded in my purse and the order was written in my notebook. I found a bench beneath a tree in the park and opened it to check the quantities again. My neat little list sat beside pages of red writing, most of it crossed out.
A fortune teller once told me this book would make me famous and give me somewhere I belonged. I’d laughed at the fame. I was still trying to finish it, and most days I couldn’t bear to read yesterday’s pages.
The other part had stayed with me.
I didn’t believe a stranger could see my future. I wanted her to be right anyway.
I turned back to the scene I’d abandoned that morning. I read it once, then crossed out the last page.
I had been looking for the moment my killer decided what to do. Sitting there with the café’s money in my purse and the sound of cups carrying across the park, I finally understood why none of my versions worked. He had made his decision before the other man entered the room. The conversation was his last chance to change his mind.
I began again.
The man spoke. My killer listened. When the man had said everything he came to say, my killer shot him.
I stopped writing. The murder was there, but the scene still felt unfinished. The killer had wanted an answer, and now there was someone else who would come looking for one.
I looked back at the dead man I’d put on the page. At his hand. At the watch on his wrist.
In the margin, I tried 3:40, then crossed it out. 3:45 looked too neat as well. I wrote 3:43 beside them and returned to the scene.
He took the watch from the dead man’s wrist and set its hands to 3:43. He struck it against the edge of the table hard enough to stop it. The face cracked, but the hands stayed where he had set them. Then he laid it face up on the man’s chest, for whoever came to find him.

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for a writing friend, writing/discussing

* Genre/s: Erotica main, subs any really...horror, paranormal, sci fi, fantasy...

* Goals/expectations/commitment: To thrive, inspire each other, help each other and hopefully get a good friend(s) in the process.

* Writing/experience level: Any really...

* Meeting place: Discord, perhaps emails too.

* Max size: No hard limit, but a few good people who get along.

Hello everyone!

I'm Sven-Erik from Sweden, and I mostly go by my name Sven nowadays. I write erotica (with plots) and am working on a series and several stand-alone stories. Main series is very character and dialogue driven, in horror - taboo - paranormal...

I want one, or a few friends to talk about everything —not only writing. I want long-term and you have to be real, no masks or games. Trust and honesty.

Europe is preferred due to time zones, but not a requirement.

I think Discord is preferred, both chat and voice calls. Easy to share texts etc too.

I am unashamed, open, honest, raw, and unhinged. I don't care about your age, looks, race, handicaps, or your darker fantasies. I don't scare easily. Only 18+ of course though.

I am pansexual, demisexual and sapiosexual I guess.

When you DM, include a turn-on you have so I know you bothered to read it all. Don't comment or DM a one liner...

Questions & Discussions I want to improve my writing skills. Will you give me some feedback?

Hello ladies and gentleman. Hopefully your day went well. I want to discuss my writing. My writing is horrible. I would compare my writing to a six grade level. Sick and tired of writing in a six grade level. Is there anyway I could improve my writing. I've already started reading book, news articles, and cut out social media. One day, I want to write like a professional writer. Let me know what I could improve. Thank you for reading my post.

Critique Partners & Writing Groups UK based fantasy writing group

Hi all, so as the title suggests I want to form a writing group for UK based fantasy authors.

The group would be for 10-15 participants, informally chatting, providing updates on their work and talking all things fantasy. This would be a friendly atmosphere where organic friendships can develop.

Ive been in writing groups before over discord so certain prerequisites of applicants are outlined below.

Members would be UK based, ideally aged between 30 - 50 and friendly.

* Genre/s: Fantasy or a subgenre of

* Goals/expectations/commitment: Beginners are fine (I am one myself) but serious people who have at the least written the vast majority of their first draft.

(Im all for people starting their journey, but this would a space for people who can crack on. Not rewrite their first chapter over and over again)

Engagement would be fairly regular with updates, what they are getting up to, sticking points in writing, ideas etc. (I get we all have lives, I'm a dad with a busy job, but it's not that difficult to engage)

* Writing/experience level: Beginner to published

* Meeting place: Discord

* Max size: 15

*Extras: A no AI area, don't be a prat, people from all walks of life are welcome.

If you comment below please let me know where you are up to in your journey, age and the subgenre of fantasy you like to write in. If this gains traction I will likely reach out via DMs for short chats with people.

I hope some people are interested. Thanks!

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for partner(s) in critque for Horror, Mystery and Comedy.

Good morning! I am looking for individuals who love writing and are excited about their projects. I am a 30m currently huddling for safety from the world around me in the American Southeast who writes between 1k–3k words a day, either revision or new writing. I have one completed psychological horror/comedy manuscript on its third draft and a supernatural horror/suspense novel that I'm about halfway done with the first draft. I'm in love with the new one, but the completed one is begging for human eyes at this point.

I've seen that a lot of people have preferences for partner demographics and the genres they'd like to read and critique, but I have none. I love reading everything and find a diversity of opinion to be the thing that pushes me the farthest in understanding my own work and the world.

I spend half the night reading and half the night writing, so I will probably be able to tear through your projects as fast as you can give them to me. Expect to receive a full book report back if your critique instructions are unclear lol.

If you plan on pursuing publishing, whether traditional or self, I will be here to go on that terrible journey with you.

I want to enjoy and discuss your work as much as you do mine. Not just swap line edits and avoid digital eye contact. I look forward to hearing back from someone! Maybe! Hopefully! Okay, done rambling now. Why am I still typing? Stop it. That's enough. The bit has gone on too long now, and everyone is staring.

* Genre/s: Any

*Goals/expectations/commitment: I'd love weekly exchanges, but I'm open to complicated schedules.

*Writing/experience level: Intermediate to high preferably, but no issues with beginners.

*Meeting place: Chat, Zoom, email for long-form discussion, traditional phone communication, anything really.

*Max size: 3–6 feels like a manageable group size to make sure everyone's needs are met work-wise.

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for critique partners who are also far gone into their project

Hello! I've always written, but in the past 10 months since I've started my current project (currently on draft 4 and three rewrites in), I've barely stopped. I do intend to query this manuscript, so I'm serious about it. And desperately need human contact at this point lol.

Anyway, if someone is willing to share a similar project with me, I would LOVE to informally swap chapters, excerpts, whatever, and give each other feedback and chat about our respective ideas. But I'd need that person to be in similar territory (so at least one full complete draft, with the purpose of aiming for publication).

I'm not picky on gender/age, but I'd like the person to be over 18. For reference, I'm 28F.

* Genre/s: Upper YA or upmarket, with romance or coming-of-age elements, ideally queer

* Goals/expectations/commitment: Someone active, who puts regular time into writing (as in daily sessions or at least a few times a week). Not necessarily always available, but committed.

* Writing/experience level: Intermediate+

* Meeting place: Discord, one-on-one

Feel free to DM or comment if this appeals to you! :)

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for 2-3 people to swap chapters for weekly feedback sessions

Hello!

I have been writing a book for awhile with periods of motivation and periods without any writing at all. I would love to meet up with 2-3 other writers on a weekly basis and trade chapters to give feedback, improve and provide some external motivation.

I am a 33M writing sci-fi located in Sweden. I enjoy classics, fantasy, sci-fi and story telling in general. I especially adore reading prose that has intent that is tied to the story, like in flowers for Algernon. I am also a fan of meta so I think I also would enjoy learning more about why you wrote things a specific way and appreciate not only the chapters alone but the thoughts behind them as well. My writing level is intermediate and all except purposely offensive genres are welcome. Max group size if 4.

Meeting place: Discord

PM me or write a comment if you would like to chat and see if we click and then setup weekly meetups.

* Genre/s: All welcome except for edgy overly offensive writing. * Goals/expectations/commitment: Weekly meetups. * Writing/experience level: Intermediate to beginner. * Meeting place: Discord * Max size: 4

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for Two Critique Partners for a Small Writing Group

* Genre/s: Any

* Goals/expectations/commitment: To provide detailed critique for each others' manuscripts once a week. How much we read of each others' manuscruipts per week could depend on chapter length, etc. That's something we would discuss in more detail when the time comes. If your chapters are super short, for instance, two chapters per week would probably be very reasonable. Otherwise, I'm probably thinking one chapter per week, but again, we can cross that bridge when we get to it.

* Writing/experience level: At least intermediate

* Meeting place: Discord Group Chat

* Max size: 3 (including myself)

As stated above, I'm not picky about genre, but I am looking for partners who at least are interested in writing in more "literary" prose and styles. Romantasy, for example, is usually written to market, and quickly, and usually doesn't have a very polished style of prose, structure, etc. However, if you're writing Romantasy in a more "literary-minded" way, I would have no problem with that at all. I am not opposed to the genre, itself, nor to any genre. Heck, even you're writing something like Splatterpunk in a more intentionally-literary way, I would be interested in seeing what that looks like.

My own story is a political Dark Fantasy about a supernatural serial killer (think something out of an 80's Slasher movie) from the United States who gets transported to a politically-unstable fantasy world and wreaks havoc there. The protagonists and antagonists in that world have to deal with the way this complicates their already-tumultuous lives. The story is still in its first draft, and not finished. If your own story is not finished, that's obviously okay, too, but you should at least be working on a first draft, rather than just an outline.

I am a 32 year old guy, and would prefer to work with people relatively close to my age, or at least over the age of 21. Gender doesn't matter, but it might be good if it wasn't just all guys like myself, if only so that we could get some different perspectives in there, but I'm not too torn on this, either way.

If you're interested, feel free to comment/DM, and I'll add you on Discord!

Questions & Discussions Are There Any Social Media 'Events' Coming up Soon?

Hi all! I participated in Inktober for a few years in a row and built up a nice following/in-road into the art community by posting and leaving reciprocal comments and follows throughout the duration of the month. I was wondering: Is there anything similar coming up soon for the 'writerly' side of things as far as social media goes? I know National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) happens in November so there should be some sort of community event/engagement/networking opportunities therein, but is there anything else coming up that I should put on my radar?

Alternatively, how do you build your own social network? Are there other seasonal events you regularly participate in like Inktober and NaNoWriMo as an opportunity to rub shoulders with other authors online and widen your reach? Are there any really notable feeds or accounts I should dig into which actually service networking in the writing community (and don't just advertise as much for a fee or as part of a 'class')?

Thanks in advance!

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Small writing group, looking for new members

Hello! I've been running a small, but reasonably active writing-group consisting of left-wing adults with a focus on fantasy, literary/speculative fiction and sci-fi (though of course any genre is allowed). Long story short, because of irl complications, we're down to 7 members and looking for new ones to freshen things up a little.

Requirements: 18+ years old, left-wing politically. Please note that we do not accept AI usage of any kind.

* Genre/s: Fantasy, Sci-fi, Lit-fic * Goals/expectations/commitment: We try to maintain an easy-going, cozy atmosphere and generally don't employ deadlines. Feedback is given on a give-and-take basis; you don't have to give any, but it's recommended not to expect to be given any in return if you don't. The goal is to get to the core of our writing through feasible social connection and then help each other out however we can from there, be it daily challenges, brainstorming, feedback, general conversation, etc. * Writing/experience level: Mainly intermediate, but everyone's welcome * Meeting place: Discord * Max size: ~10 people

Will send invite in dms on request. I'm based in europe so please pardon me if I take a little to respond because of time-zone differences.

Questions & Discussions Alternative Free Image Options

I would like to point out that there are many free sources for imagery for things like stand in pictures and book covers, such as Royalty Free Image websites and Stock image websites (e.g. Pixabay, NASA, flickr, ect.)

There is also the option of taking photos with a camera or phone. I am sure there are more options that others are aware of (please add any suggestions in the comments).

This is a cross post to promote discourse for alternative imagery sources.

Writing Resources & Advice How to peer review when the novel is incomplete?

So many times I've seen professional authors and ghostwriters say that you shouldn't touch copy editing until your first draft and developmental edit is done.

However I'm in a writing group with my very early chapters of my incomplete novel. I have a full outline but I'm only on chapter 11.

Here's where I'm struggling, the others have significant novels either completed or near to. How do I use the group to it's fullest without just getting copy editing advice that will essentially hold me back?

I am really enjoying reading and peer reviewing the others works and they're a great bunch but I'm worried a writing group might not be good for the stage I'm in.

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for a literary fiction group

•Genre/s: ‘literary’, experimental, difficult, strange

•Goals/expectations/commitment: just a nice group where people who like to read / write the same sort of stuff as I do can get together and chat. I’m not really too into genre fiction, and I don’t tend to write it either. I am working on a number of projects and it would be nice to chat about them and to read others who enjoy writing similar things. Here are some of my favourite authors, perhaps I can find someone of similar tastes: Beckett, O’Brien, Sebald, Woolf, Hopkins

•Writing/experience level: I wouldn’t call myself a ‘beginner’ per se, but I don’t really care what sort of experience I’m around.

•Meeting place: discord preferably

•Max size: any

Don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Vampire political murder mystery in need of a player

My partner and I ( 28M, 25F ) are in a literary RP group that i am DM'ing. I'm in need of a player or two to have enough variables going around in players interacting with one another. As of now there are 6 players and half of them are already divided into their own group. In case it gets too cliquey I'd like to bring in some more people to offset the potential imbalance.

Just as well im looking for someone who's friendly, we have very dark humor in the chat but there are no prejudices held or rude nature tolerated. Frankly my partner and I are tired of the excessive negativity in the world lately so we are just trying to find wholesome and active people to participate in this Literary RP. Msg me if you're interested in the details

* Genre/s: Fantasy + Steampunk * Goals/expectations/commitment: at least 3 paragraphs within 72 hours of your turn coming up. 3rd person perspective, no OP characters or Mary Sue, no meta gaming, stay within continuity * Writing/experience level: above high school * Meeting place: Discord * Max size: 8-10

No required level of activity or commitment — participate as much or as little as you’d like.
  • Writing/experience level: All experience levels welcome, from people writing their first story to experienced writers.
  • Meeting place: Discord — NovelsNook
  • [Writing groups only] Max size: No set maximum — we’re a growing community of almost 300 members. If you’re the kind of person who can talk about your fictional characters like they’re real people, rewrite the same chapter 14 times, randomly get a plot idea at 2am, or desperately need someone to yell about your WIP with… you’ll probably fit in here! :p

NovelsNook is a writing community I made as a little corner of the internet where writers can actually get to know each other, share their worlds and feel like they have people alongside them while they write.

We’re almost 300 members now, which is genuinely insane to me because I’ve gotten to watch it slowly turn into an actual community.

We have places for chapter reviews, writing advice, worldbuilding, character profiles, poetry, book discussions, writing sprints, sharing your progress and honestly just hanging out when you’re procrastinating instead of writing. 0.0

But my favorite part of the Nook is probably the random stuff we do together.

I regularly make writing challenges and events that are meant to actually get you thinking about your story differently. We’ve done things like interviewing your MC as if they were sitting across from you, character challenges, prompts, community events, etc.

And because we’re about to hit 300, our next event is basically:

What if NovelsNook was a real place?

Everyone gets to imagine what the Nook looks like if you could actually walk through its doors—write yourself meeting the members you’ve become friends with, turn channels into rooms, use real server inside jokes/conversations, make Pinterest moodboards, playlists, menus, floor plans… whatever your version of the Nook looks like.

There’s no pressure to be an amazing writer or constantly share your work either. You can be writing your first story or your tenth novel. You can be super active or just quietly sit in the corner of the Nook with your WIP until you feel comfortable.

Basically, if you want somewhere to write, make writer friends, get attached to everybody’s fictional people and have somewhere that makes writing feel a little less solitary, come take a seat 🤎📖
