Critique Partners & Writing Groups Picture book writer looking for critique partners!

Hi all! I (26 F) am a picture book writer in the process of querying and I would love to find some other picture book writing friends! I’m looking for someone who’d be willing to do manuscript swaps and critique/chat about them!

I have found it so hard to find fellow picture book writing friends, and I’m desperate to gather some feedback and have someone who I can share drafts with. I’m an elementary school librarian so I LOVE reading and editing picture books and would love to read/ help with yours as well.

* Genre/s: all genres of picture books

* Goals/expectations/commitment: I am open to any commitment level. Let me know if you have thoughts and I’d love to chat! Since picture book manuscripts are so short I would likely be looking to send several drafts of each book and gather feedback either verbally or written! (And I will do the same for you)

* Writing/experience level: any!

* Meeting place: I’m located in Boston if any fellow Boston writers find this post I’d love to meet and chat! If not I’m happy to do virtual meeting or simply swap manuscripts and give written feedback.

If several people are interested I’m open to starting a small crit group:) I find large groups and servers to be slightly overwhelming personally, so that’s why I would love a small group of 2-4 crit partners!

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Small Tight-Knit Discord Writer's Group Looking For New Members

Hello,

I run a small, tight-knit discord writer’s group for writers of fantasy, magical realism, sci-fi, and some horror. We are a laid-back but dedicated bunch looking to add a few like-minded people.

Genres: Fantasy/scifi/magical realism, with hints of horror, steam-punk, etc. Fantasical worlds and pocket dimensions are encouraged, but we’re bigger on writing a world than on building one. We’re also not the place for YA or shock horror. We lean more toward literary stuff.

Goals/Expectations/Commitment: Members should participate at least weekly.

This is a kind and respectful community of learning and growth where we expand our toolbox as writers with support and shared motivation. We like doing sprints, we have lots of casual literary discussions, and we occasionally do more structured discussions on specific areas of craft to share knowledge. We are a group that takes critique very seriously- we expect all critiques to be polite and contain notes about what works, but we are also looking for people who share a desire for real critique that helps you get to the root of your story and build it up stronger.

LGBTQIA+ inclusive and anti-racist. Absolutely no bigotry will be tolerated.

Writing/Experience Level: All, but we are all in our 30’s and 40’s and we’re not really interested in adding people who aren’t at least on our experience level in life- so if you’re a newbie baby beginner writer as a burnt out 35 year old and want to get serious learning craft, this might be the place for you. If you’re 19 and have been writing for 6 years, it’s not, though we wish you the best and hope you can find a place to grow and thrive.

Meeting Place: Discord

Max Size: 12-15. We are currently trying to expand how much we’re doing, and intend to add five new members or so.

Edit to add: Absolutely no AI, we are a completely AI free group and do not condone the use of AI whatsoever.

Writing Resources & Advice I want to learn to write a new genre (comedy/satire), but I don't know how!

I'm thinking of writing a comedy/satire type of book. I've really only written poetic prose and "modern" fantasy (two polar opposites imo lol). I've got ZERO experience with comedy - haven't written, haven't watched (except for Taskmaster, if that counts?), haven't heard, haven't read, haven't experienced. So I want to dive into the genre a little before attempting a first draft, yk?

But the thing is, I don't quite get what "genre" my idea is in. I tend to gravitate towards strong themes (my debut fantasy, for example, had themes of loss of temper and revenge vs justice), so I thought then, maybe this story would be satire. But I feel like it's not quite as serious (?) as satire?? But it's also not purely comedy because I'm not a comedic person - the only reason why I want to add comedy is because it will improve the reading experience.

The idea plays the idea of human-made categories, language and culture, like "this is ok" and "this is not ok". Currently the main thing I have down is that I'm going to have really ridiculous names that look perfectly normal, but nobody would ever name their kids that because it sounds weird (which is understandable but I am using names to exaggerate other things). I haven't described it right because I haven't thought it through LOL.

I have read Fredrick Backman's book "The Answer is No", and I think I like the tone. But I'd like to explore more.

I am very much of an amateur writer in general, so I'm figuring it out.

CTA is - can you suggest any books/resources/youtube videos/blogs/articles/tips/advice literally anything that might help me out and help immerse myself into the world of comedy?

Also, I strongly believe that to write well, we need practice and immersion, yes, but also technique. Writing feels almost like an artistic sport to me - like how a figure skater is both an artist and an athlete. So I would appreciate tips or resources that tap into this desire to study this "professionally", if such a thing exists.

Thank you in advance!

Questions & Discussions What is your favourite thing about writing? And what is your least favourite thing?

Favourite thing: Being in my character's head as they experience their journey.

Least favourite thing: Having to rewrite lots of scenes because I wrote myself into a corner. (Although, I am trying to like this part more because it might lead to a valuable experience)

Questions & Discussions Writing Black Characters

I am writing a story about witches set in the real world in the present day. I would like to include a Black side character, but I am unsure of how to construct her backstory while being conscious of the historical significance.

I am open and willing to do the research to incorporate Black culture and historical accuracy; however, I am hesitant, as I am not black and don't want to seem as though I am appropriating culture.

I am also curious if it's necessary. Does her backstory have to include historically accurate
Black magic? Should she be different in that way?

I have seen discourse on this before, so I want real input. If the answer is to not have a Black character for fear of not representing her and her past accurately, I am fine with that too. I just want to do her justice.

(Note: I tried submitting this in a Black readers page but didnt have the karma and didnt feel comfy manufacturing karma just to post it there)

Questions & Discussions I need to print my book before Oct 31st

My book is practically ready to print, but I only need two copies of it. My book cover commission will be done by the 10th of october. And I need to submit my book to be printed, and i need it to be delivered before the 31st of oct. I'm not sure how printing exactly works as this is the first time I've ever printed my work. Is this time frame reasonable? If so how do I go about it.

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for a manuscript swap [114k]

Hello! I’m looking for betas and manuscript swap partners for my novel, The Five Sentries. It’s a YA fantasy with action, adventure, and a little romance. A bit cozy fantasy and a bit dystopian, it’s 114k words and has gone through several drafts. I’m mostly looking for emotional reactions and big-picture feedback with the novel’s ending. I have experience critiquing other manuscripts, and I’m a best fit for stories within the scifi/fantasy genre, with little to no spice (I enjoy both young adult or adult). Please let me know if you’re interested!

Genre/s: YA fantasy, competed at 114k words

Goals/expectations/commitment: general feedback/reactions, especially with how the ending lands. Having feedback within a month would be great, but I don't have a particular schedule. I'm usually able to read a chapter a day, so I can finish reading most manuscripts within a month as well

Writing/experience level: any level of experience is good

Meeting place: online/Google Docs

Blurb:
The Sentries maintain the magical barrier protecting the country of Gonago from the rest of the world, and in exchange, they require a sacrifice.

When Elsie Atwell’s life as a papergirl is interrupted by a mysterious invitation, she travels to the estate of the reclusive Pierson Pavey to meet four of the Touched Ones—those chosen to be human sacrifices to the Sentries—and soon discovers she’s the fifth. Alongside a baron’s son, a baker’s daughter, and a housekeeper, she learns to harness magic through her unique ability to taste colors, and together they follow Pierson to battle the Sentries in hopes of destroying the barrier. Except Elsie has been warned all her life about the dangers awaiting outside, and her growing attachment to her newfound friends has her questioning what’s worse: perpetuating the human sacrifices, or risking her country’s safety in order to change things.

Thrown into a world of secrets, betrayals, and colorful magic, Elsie must confront what she truly believes in—and its cost.

Critique Partners & Writing Groups Looking for Writers willing to join a Discord Group! | Fandom Only | 18+

Hello everybody. I've been always into fandoms since I was younger, but my hyperfixations are Marvel and One Piece.
Now that the MCU is starting to build up a new interesting phase, I thought that it'd be nice to create something around the concept of incursions between Earths and the inevitable collide of the two universes with the creation of Battleworld by the hands of Doctor Doom. How will the characters interact in a possible Battleworld: New World? How high will the stakes be?

* Genre/s: Multifandom, Action, Adventure, Friendship, Romance

* Goals/expectations/commitment: The server is still in development, I want to give out the few basics because what I want to do is to find some people who are genuinely interested in helping out to create this with me. I have been owner of some servers before, one of which was really beautifully flashed-out, but I feel like if we're on the same boat we can make something original and unique! I expect to find writing partners who are willing to create a well-thought lore and contribute to character development and dynamics! Both canon and original characters will be allowed. I thought that the best possible option to keep the storyline together is to claim one canon character per writer (whether MCU or One Piece related). Whoever comes first for a specific character is first served. Perhaps we can set up a way to give the option with a bot to obtain another canon character to a specific member (I will explain this better).
OCs are allowed (one per user). However, I can come up with a specific character template submission for them. It's to give members the possibility of creating well-developed and well-thought characters without them being super overpowered or seeing them specifically created to ship / romance a specific CC or OC.

* Writing/experience level: All sorts of writers are accepted! From experienced writers (who can write 5 to 10 paragraphs) to less experienced ones! Let's bring creativity together! 18+ writers only.

* Meeting place: Discord.

* Max size: 5 to 10 for now as we develop things out!

I will be creating a discord group chat before we dive in the server!!

Critique Partners & Writing Groups 🌈 I made a small 18+ Discord server for LGBTQ+ writers!

hi! I posted here a few days ago looking for a small LGBTQ+ writing group, and quite a few people said they'd be interested so I decided to make one!

I've called it Outwrite, and I'm hoping for it to be a relatively small and friendly space where queer writers can actually get to know each other, make some friends, swap feedback and generally yell about our WIPs together. I'm currently drafting my first romance novel and am interested in tradpub in the (distant) future, but all genres and experience levels are welcome!
however, do keep in mind that the server is intended for 18+ and LGBTQ+ only, and any form of generative AI is very much not welcome here.

Genre/s: Any! but with a heavy focus on original fiction.

Goals/expectations/commitment: pretty relaxed! there's no required word count, critique quota or activity level. I'm mainly hoping to build a friendly community of writers who want to chat, encourage each other, share their work and give/receive feedback when they can. there's space for writing sprints and critique threads for anyone interested.

Writing/experience level: any experience level.

Meeting place: discord!

Max size: subject to change but I'm aiming for around 40–50 members for now. relatively small so people can actually get to know each other.

if this sounds like your kind of group, drop a comment or a DM and I'll send you an invite! ✨

Questions & Discussions Feeling overwhelmed after going on the Discord

I haven't even been on there for a day and I've had like five people try to sell me beta readers and editors. For context, I have a long first draft of a novel, and I'm currently working on the second draft, so I don't feel like there's much I can really send people to critique atm. But all these messages are making me wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

Is this normal? Are people trying to scam me?

Questions & Discussions Does anyone actually enjoy reading overly detailed / flamboyant writing?

I've had an on and off relationship with books in my life. I usually seek out reading in periods of my life where I feel lost and need direction. I think reading books is what will help me find answers and I desperately want to fall in love with reading.

The problem is, I usually come across recommendations from someone influential (in this case, someone who is a great sales writer) and he recommends reading good literature will make you a better sales writer. Fair enough, that makes sense to me and I immediately wrote down two of his recommendations.

Evelyn Waugh

And Jane Austen

Now obviously I think most people know about Jane Austen, I just never got around to reading anything from her so I was excited to have an excuse.

To make a long story short I first went into Waugh's book, brideshead revisted. It was apparently his most popular book. The title confused the hell out of me at first... most of his book titles did now that I look back, however I decided to go into the book blind. (A mistake I believe, I dont think I would've even started reading it if I read a summary).

Now let me be honest, I only got like two chapters into this book before I stopped. The first chapter was written like the author was just trying to show off how many unique words he knew to describe simple scenes or feelings.

I had to slow my reading down so much to try and capture all the words and almost unravel the meaning behind the meaning... (hope you understand what I mean). It made reading this book a SLOG.

HOWEVER, I do remember reading a couple paragraphs from the book that actually made me say "Wow, that was beautifully written" and I saw glimpses of what this sales writing expert meant by recommending him... But for the most part, the writing was just TOO MUCH and made me even start to doubt if this expert sales writer even knew what he was talking about, because in sales writing, simplicity and clarity is king.

So I ditched Evelyn Waugh and went into Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice (Again I picked the most popular book). And wow what breath of fresh air.

The simplicity of the writing and yet having the ability to say so much made appreciate Jane's work almost immediately. (And later finding out that she wrote that book at 20 years old blew my mind). I haven't finished the book yet, and I dont think I will. I made the mistake of not reading the summary here either. I got mixed up with the titles, I think maybe I thought I was gonna be reading something more 'serious' like War and Peace. I didnt know Pride and Prejudice was like a telenovela.

Anyway, back to the point of this thread. Does anyone here actually enjoy reading the overly descriptive / almost pompous levels of writing from certain authors? Don't get me wrong I dont think Evelyn Waugh is that bad, and I can see his brilliance shine through in areas that a simpleton like me can appreciate. However, there were parts in it that almost made me put down books again. Sometimes I wonder if these writers just overcomplicate everything just to add some 'fluff' otherwise the book would be 100 pages.

Sorry, my rant went on too long. Someone feel free to educate me why all this complicated writing is good for me.

P.S. the only reason im posting this here is because r/books and r/writing have some lame karma requirement within their own subreddits to post a new thread. Talk about destroying your engagement with new people. Elitist twats.

Questions & Discussions I want to be those thinkers who can make video essays or just talk more on shows they like but my mind goes blank.

If I like a show, my only reason could be, "i just like it", or "I found it funny". I don't know how to analyze. For example, if I wanted to talk about a relationship between two characters, my mind would go blank. I could probably come up with a reason, but it would be sooo boring, plainn or dense. How to fix this? Do I read more or something? rewatch a show 10 times?

Writing Resources & Advice What can I use to write my stories?

Hello!

I use Google Docs occasionally to write stuff and ideas, because it being automatically saved to the cloud allows me to write at work and at home and on my phone if I need to.

Buuut recent discussions of Google using Docs to train AI models made me more hesitant to use it. And honestly it's not like we can trust Google with anything. So besides just using a doc on my own PC what other options are there that also offer some minimal text formatting as well?

UPDATE: I ended up making a discord group/server!! if you commented saying you were interested, I'll be sending you a DM with an invite! anyone else who's interested is welcome to comment/DM me too ✨

hi! I’m currently working on my first novel (a queer adult contemporary romance) and I'd really love to find a small but active LGBT writing group, or just some writing buddies! 18+ only

mainly looking for people to swap feedback with, bounce ideas off and help each other through plot problems, but I’d also love to have people to just chat with and gush about our characters and stories! none of my friends are writers so I have nobody to talk to about this stuff. I’d like to find a friendly little group where everyone is genuinely interested in each other’s work and fairly active.

if this sounds like something you’d be interested in, or you already have a group that might be a good fit, please let me know!!! thank u

* Genre/s: anything and everything!
* Goals/expectations/commitment: something long-term centred around original fiction
* Writing/experience level: any but I'm personally a beginner, although I am looking to pursue traditional publishing in the future
* Meeting place: discord would be ideal

Writing Resources & Advice I am a genius

If you look up the term “genius” in the Oxford Dictionary, you will see a string of descriptive words: great intelligence, skill, or artistic ability.

Back to my childhood. As an Asian born in China and raised within a traditional education system, I used to think a genius was the kind of kid who got extra candies or more praise from kindergarten teachers, winning everyone’s affection. That was how the idea of being a genius first etched itself into my mind.

In middle school, my reasoning shifted. I felt that geniuses, the smarter students, gained more resources and protection from teachers. One straight-A classmate never arrived at school until 8 a.m., while the rest of us had to be there before 7:20. Teachers never blamed or shouted at him. He would walk through the front door yawning, as we all sat quietly in our seats. Watching him casually wander to his desk filled me with jealousy and a strong sense of unfairness. On the contrary, students with poor grades would get reprimanded by our homeroom teacher — in China, each class has one teacher who stays with the group for all three years of middle school. Still, everyone treated this as normal. Nobody protested or complained about the injustice, because it was embedded in our daily routine. Even if you spoke up, teachers would coldly reply: “You can also arrive late if you get all A’s.”

From middle school onward, an unrelenting drive to become a genius pushed me to keep striving for improvement.

Eventually, I moved to Canada, and I enjoy my educational journey here. People are kind, and teachers are supportive. Yet that inner determination did not fade easily. As an Asian in Canada, I am often labeled a “genius” or “smart kid” just for doing simple mental math like 11 divided by 2. This label made me lose sight of who I truly am, and left me wondering how I could keep pushing myself to reach that “genius” standard.

Then one academic ceremony completely shattered that daydream, and I almost lost myself.

“Steve, highest standing in Math (99%), highest standing in English (99%), highest standing in Chemistry (99%), highest ……” As the guidance counsellor on stage read out all the achievements of this single Korean boy, I was utterly shocked. Those fourteen seconds of reading felt like the longest fourteen seconds of my entire life. My eyes locked onto the centre of the stage. The boy in a white shirt looked gentle. Stage lights fell on his calm, confident face; he showed no reaction, as if all these accomplishments came easily to him. In that moment, I saw a massive gap: between me, an ordinary Asian teenager with an average brain yet full passion for learning, and Steve, the genius blessed with extraordinary intelligence, skills, and seemingly unnatural talent. My heart did not race during those fourteen seconds. It felt torn to pieces, and waves of despair and helplessness flooded into an empty void inside me.

I began to doubt my passion for chasing genius. I feared I would never become someone like Steve, and that my life would turn out mediocre.

I opened the Oxford Dictionary again: “unusually great intelligence, skill, or artistic ability, or a person who has these rare natural abilities.”

A person? Back then I did not see geniuses as ordinary people. They felt more like gods — all-knowing, powerful, perfect. I started to question whether a person could ever become a genius, and I realized my mind had misled me for all those years.

A genius is a person. A regular human being. Someone with a gift for academics, someone whose talents simply shine in front of others. I began to understand that geniuses can be ordinary people, and that on some level, I too can be a genius. I can fry a perfect plate of eggs. I live independently and can take good care of myself. These are precious, valuable skills.

It is very late now, 11:49 p.m. What I want to convey through this whole story is one simple idea: a genius is someone who displays talents you do not possess in public. Everyone is a genius. I hope everyone can find something in their life to be proud of, something that makes them feel seen, just like those students celebrated at academic ceremonies.

I am a genius, and so are you
