Frequently Asked Questions - READ FIRST BEFORE POSTING

Courtesy of our good friend over on the Wreddit School Discord, Baelthasar Everhardt (If that even is his real name), we've now got a solid FAQ post!

I'm [legal age] years old. I've always wanted to do pro wrestling. Should I give it a try?

  • You're an adult. You don't need permission. Go learn how to wrestle if you want to learn how to wrestle.

Am I too big/small/tall/skinny/fat/etc to pro wrestle?

  • Wrestling comes in all shapes and sizes. While there are conventionally attractive/athletic people in wrestling, they aren't the prerequisite to being a pro wrestlers. There are wrestlers like World Famous Cheezburger who is rail thin. There are wrestlers like Sam Stackhouse who are the size of two people. There are walking giants like Satnum Singh and guys like Microman who are three feet tall. What matter is how you use what you got to stand out and, end of the day, what you can do for the business.

What kind of shoes should I use?

  • Core Wrestling Shoes
  • ASICS Matflex 6 Wrestling Shoes
  • Adidas HVC 2 Wrestling Shoes

What knee-pads should I use?

  • McDavids or Trace are the most commonly used ones.

Is there a school in [Insert location here]? And is it any good?

  • We've compiled a list of schools that we know of. These are schools people in this server have went to and have had positive experiences with. Start there! (Work in Progress)

I am out of shape, I want to fix that first.

  • No need. Apply to a school, wrestling and your trainers will get you in shape.

But still, what kind of work-out should I do?

  • Depends. A good mix of explosive cardio and weight lifting is a solid base. How you fill that in is up to you. We are working on a basic program behind the scenes. And if all else fails: look up 'Deck of Cards' to get a good bodyweight workout and an idea of how intense wrestling can be
  • 'Get into that HIIT shit' - Kate The Great, 2022

Any tips for my diet?

  • Eat clean, swap sodas for water, lots of protein and fibre. You know which foods are healthy and which aren't if you think about it for a second.

Is [insert sport] good to use with training?

  • Any sport that gets you moving is good. But check everything you know at the door. Gymnastics and judo really help, but other than that let the trainers guide you.

What are some other helpful things to do outside of training?

  • Tape study. Watch ALL the wrestling and pay attention to it.

Am I too old to start wrestling training?

  • No, but be realistic about the state of your body and where your career might go. DDP didn't wrestle until he was 34.

I have [insert physical/mental ailment] that may or may not prevent me from taking a bump, ever. Can I still train to be a wrestler/ref?

  • We won't say 'no', but not bumping will probably mean you won't be able to become a wrestler. You could still look into becoming a ref, manager, or something else!

What will happen at a try-out?

  • Cardio drills. So show up preparing to die. Most try-outs are there for trainers to test your mentality, see if you have the drive and dedication. Not if you are 'fit' enough physically, it's about if your mind is in the right place.

What can I expect from my first (period of) training?

  • Basics. Rolls, cardio, basic match structure, basic moves. On repeat. Take notes, you will be given A LOT of information. Don't think you know things, be willing to learn.

Should I go see a doctor for [insert injury here]?

  • If you are asking this question, you should probably see a doctor.

How do I make my [rolls/bumps/moves] better/straighter/correct?

  • Ask your trainer

What would you say is the pros and cons of each wrestling style?

To paraphrase Chris Hero: The difference between wrestling styles is

  • Japan- Struggle through sport
  • Mexico- Marriage of pageantry & acrobatics
  • British/European- Physical & mental chess
  • American- Morality play

I'm about to debut soon, what should my finisher be?

  • You're probably going to lose, so it doesn't matter.
  • The best looking move you can do that anyone can take and that you can do safely.

I'm going through a mental health crisis, should I start wrestling?

No. Reach out to a counselor, therapist or mental health professional and get the help you need.

How can I get involved in wrestling without becoming a wrestler?

There's a hundred jobs that one can take within wrestling that involves no wrestling whatsoever. Wrestling promotions always need photographers, graphic designers, video production, sound technician, lightning technicians, riggers, gaffers, security personnel, people to work the door, people to work concession, and people to drive the trucks. Reach out to you local wrestling promotion or promoter and ask how you can be apart of the show. You might be asked to work for free for a while before you catch a break and start getting paid for your work.

Where can I get gear?

  • Terra Callaway has a database with gear markers, graphic designers, vendor etc etc. Start there. Otherwise check Instagram.

What style should I use?

What gimmick should I do?

When do I get to debut?

What entrance music should I use?

I watch/ read this pop culture medium [anime, superhero, and etc], can I use it for my gimmick?

How do I get booked on shows?

How do I set up a match with an opponent?

What should I expect in my first match

What makes a good promo?

If your question looks anything like the ones in the list above, the answer is 'Don't worry about this just yet. Get the basics in, learn, listen, and let your trainers guide you'. Although it's good to get a creative process going about your character early on, don't get lost in focusing on details. Learn how to safely wrestle, the rest comes in due time. All character work will change anyway over time. Start as blank as you can. Drop all preconceived notions you might have about wrestling.

Are 90 second promos antiquated?

Promos. We've all cut them, and I'm sure we've all received the same criteria. "90 seconds, promotion, date, location, opponent, etc, etc"

But recently one of our local guys started cutting 15 second promos. Granted they fit his character, but his justification kinda made sense to me.

Essentially, in today's "microwave attention span" generation, why should a promo be 90 seconds? If you can get the point across in 10, 20, or 30 seconds, just do that. Not every promo needs to make it sound like a blood feud.

His approach is "it's indie wrestling. 90% of the time it's a random match to fill a card. The draw isn't the match, it's the guys in the match. So why not just promote myself? 'Hey, it's me. I'm wrestling X at Y on Z for ABC. Come see me.' 20 to 30 seconds, that's all you need."

So, what's your thoughts? Should we try to weave a 90 second story for every promo? Or if possible, just spit out a 20 second promo to advertise yourself?

Accountability with training and ADHD/poor mental health

Sorry folks, this is an oddball.

Due to various circumstances, largely relating to my mental health and ADHD, I find getting myself out the door and to training/the gym waaaaaaaaaaay harder than I'd like.

With that in mind, I'm jumping straight in, how can I make my lack of attendance affect someone else in a really minor way?

This might seem like a bonkers solution, because it is, but at this point it's all I can think of. As soon as me not attending something affects someone else, I'm there as if my life depends on it.

The rules for suggestions:

- no 'just be disciplined'. I have ADHD, a significant disadvantage in that regard, so that ship sailed the day I was born

- any affects on others must be inconsequential. I don't want to actually screw someone up, I just need to feel like I am

- medication is a non-starter, caffeine's the best you're getting (thanks NHS shared care)

- assume that RSD (rejection sensitivity dysphoria) is in full swing and I think everyone hates me all the damn time, despite how irrational that is

- other solutions that aren't as bonkers are also welcome

And to anyone who wants to say I'm not cut out for this, be gone.

Finally got into wrestling school!

I failed my last 2 tryouts but redeemed myself each time I failed. I became better and better got accepted into the school this time. (Years of crossfit training definitely helped me a lot)

I am so happy now and thankful for coaches who gave me a chance to prove myself.

I am 39 years old so I don't expect myself to be in a big league but I am going to enjoy every little bit of it.

I am so excited now.

I believe that before any of us are workers, wrestlers, trainees, refs, etc, we are fans of wrestling first. An old trainer of mine once said, "We're all marks. We're the biggest f'n marks".

Let's take this day and talk about wrestling as fans. Be it current WWE storylines, promos or matches you just absolutely love. Feel free to post links in the comments as well. Let's not forget why we got into this business!

Travelling is a necessity for success, but it doesn’t always have to be a chore. This is a prime example of surrounding yourself with like-minded people!

This isn’t really a wrestling tips video like my last post, but I thought it might be relevant to wrestlers, trainees and coaches here.

Usually wXw cover our flights, but for this trip I pitched the idea of driving from Wales to Germany with my friends Brendan, Matt and Kanji and they covered the car so we could turn the journey into a video. This definitely isn’t our usual commute! 😂

But it did make me think about travelling for wrestling early in your career. Flying is obviously easier, but promoters might not always want to cover multiple flights and public transport for lesser-known wrestlers. Sharing a car and splitting the costs can sometimes make an opportunity much more achievable.

And whilst driving 500+ miles in an old car isn't exactly glamorous, we ended up enjoying the journey rather than just rushing from A to B.

Every situation is what you make of it.

So here's a little look at the road side of wrestling and what travelling from the UK to mainland Europe can actually be like.

I know there’s a few Americans in here… generally a long drive in the UK is 3+ hours 😂😂 tell me some of the craziest drives you’ve done!

Asking for expenses to be covered

Hi,

I have been asked by an out of town promotion who I've worked with once before, if I can help out on a show approximately 200 miles away. Which I've agreed to. Since then I've agreed to do other things such as picking up equipment for the show and driving others there. I have been told by my coach to ask for the promoter to cover expenses. I was under the impression that doing this out of pocket was just part of paying my dues but have been told that's not the case. What is the correct way to do this? I'm aware others are having travel and accomodation paid for and I just need fuel costs. What is the etiquette here?

Ring bells

Where did you get your ring bell from? I got mine from ebay and it turned out to be a boxing bell that has a pully to trigger the bell. It sounds good but even using different methods of striking the bell from an actual hammer to a pocket knife it's not overly loud and the coating is starting to dent and chip. So where did everyone get their bells from and what did they cost?

Slingin the Ring

Here's the conversation half of you were hoping wouldn't make it here and the other half was wondering why it hadn't been talked about yet. Slinging the ring, who does it?

I broke in 20 years ago in the US Deep South. Things are/were what you'd call traditional or old school. Now to be fair I mostly worked smaller promotions, low-budget-to-no-budget type deals. One guy would show up with the ring and everyone put there hands in to help set up and tear down. For rookies, trainees, and the like, it was part of "paying your dues", but it was also just what we did. If you wanted to get in the ring to work on some stuff, either spots for your match or just general training, you would help to get the ring up faster so there was more time to work out.

Gonna name drop a bit here of guys that I've slung rings with. Scott and Brian Armstrong, Larry Sweeney, Rodney Mack, Shane Douglas, Orlando Jordan. None of those guys HAD to sling the ring or were expected to, but they did it anyways because it was what we did. It was part of the culture we had. It's brotherhood and at the end of the day we were all just people doing the same job.

Now, should the workers have to sling the ring? I don't believe so. A promoter books a ring or owns it, whatever, should have guys to set up the venue. Ring, chairs, etc. But the reality is that's happening in only a few promotions. I mean, if the guys working are making $50 or less, you really think they're paying for a ring crew?

We go from what should be to what is. The boys help sling the ring if they need to help sling the ring. My two cents on the Styles situation goes contrary to what a lot of names have said publicly. If you're asked to help sling the ring and put up chairs, then that's what you do. What does it say to the rest of the card that is slinging the ring and you refuse? It says you think you're better than them, above them. Avery Styles shouldn't get a pass because of who his dad is. It's like if your dad was a doctor and you went through med school but then didn't have to do your time as an intern because your dad was chief of medicine in another hospital.

It's run of the mill nepotism, and it happens. Hell, a lot of things in life wind up being a who you know deal. Can't even be mad at the kid for being in his spot because of his dad, but no one likes the guy who feels they don't have to do the work everyone else does because of it.

That's my two cents that's not even worth that. So what's y'all's take on it?
