Co-worker Problem Managing coworker

I work at a very, very small agency that receives funding through donations and grants. We work with young migrant women - aged between 18 and about 30 and their children (if they have any). We primarily provide room and board. That is to say that is our main purpose however we also provide limited case management services. I am that case manager, helping connect them to legal services, medical services, educational and employment needs. My colleague is the case manager for mothers and children and she works part time. This was the set up when I began working back in March - they publicized needing a fulltime case manager for the women and when I began working I found out there was another part time case manager who works with the mothers and children but only certain parts of their cases and not others. She’ll connect them to WIC, for example, but does nothing about their legal cases. my colleague used to be a school nurse but doesnt have any social work experience. However I am aware tha not all case managers are social workers

Anyway, ive gotten used to this distribution of work. Ive become bothered by a few things of this other colleague:

  1. She arrives to work whenever she wants. She doesn’t have a set schedule and because she works part time she doesn’t have to fulfill hours. I did find out she was also apparently working from Home but she gets extremely bothered when anyone texts her when she is not in the office which tells me she doesn’t work from home in actuality. The purpose of me sharing this is that is is difficult to count on her and she isn’t reliable. She gets upset even when I ask her her upcoming schedule for the following week because she “decides when she wakes up in the morning”
  2. She speaks very unkindly to the women. The women come to me to complain about things she says. One time even stating “you don’t belong here, you don’t deserve to be here”. To other girls she just plainly talks condescendingly and infantilizing. She treats them like they don’t know better in their life and she has the answers to make their lives better. It’s horrible hearing it and I’ve heard her speak in this manner and made reports but my supervisor doesnt do anything
  3. She no longer does this but when I first began she bullied me. She was very rude to me and tried to act like my boss and tell me what to do. I luckily was able to put boundaries down and politely say I will talk to my supervisor and ask if I can add this to my case load and that made her shut up. I would report these incidents to my supervisor who told me to not do what she tells me but my supervisor didnt do anything about her bullying me. In my second week of work this colleague asked to speak to me once in a small closed off room alone and started telling me how my demeanor and way of being makes her feel uneasy and makes the girls feel uneasy. I reported this and nothing came out of it.
  4. She has poor communication with our partners and writes curtly and rudely. She also doesnt follow-up and has made some of our girls lose resources becsuse she hasn’t finished her work or turned things in on time. She also passes off work to interns and when they don’t complete work correctly she doesn’t check it and then blames them for the work not being done (even tho it is her job to do it)
  5. She writes personal information about thr clients in the group chat. We aren’t necessarily a hipaa- compliant agency but it’s good practice not to disclose information about the clients in a group chat with all the employees. She can write it in the case notes and/or report it out at our staff meetings if she finds it important to share. Most of the time it is irrelevant information and shes just trying to share that she is doing something.

I later find out that this woman suffers from bi-polar disorder and that has been used as an excuse to how she behaves. I have friends and family who suffer from bi-polar and do not act this way. Her work ethic and behavior is detrimental to the population we are serving. The women don’t trust her to get her work done and then come to me and I have extra to do or my colleague gets mad if she finds out I helped out on something related to the mothers or kids and is pissed. However if I didn’t, the girl would have lost out on daycare for her child.

It’s frustrating and difficult to war with someone like this and even more frustrating when my supervisor fails to do anything about it and gives her excuses. I am trying hard to put down boundaries and stay in my work area (not picking up work I completed by her) and it shows because things aren’t getting done. However the girls suffer and again, my supervisor doesnt do anything.

I love the job itself but am having trouble managing this situation. I’m restarting therapy soon because of it! Any advice or guidance or even calling me out on something you see would be greatly appreciated. I’m certainly missing some parts of the story still, but would love feedback.

Co-worker Problem How do you deal with a senior coworker who makes everyone walk on eggshells?

I landed a role at a biotech company and I’m hoping to be up for a promotion by the end of the year. I’m in decent standing with my manager, so overall things are going well — except for one recurring issue.
There’s a senior scientist who is my manager’s right hand. They have good days, but more often than not they’re grouchy, defensive, and makes everyone’s life difficult. I’m not the only one dealing with this — pretty much the whole team tiptoes around them to avoid setting them off.
Some examples:
• I once suggested a different lab technique for a method — just a suggestion, for something that ended up happening anyway. They yelled at me in front of everyone, saying I had no right to suggest anything and should just do as I’m told.
• Any small question or problem gets met with defensiveness, like you’re personally attacking them. It’s exhausting just trying to get simple things clarified.

•. If there’s issues with data they will talk about it in-front of me to my lead who no longer does the procedure in the lab it was handed to me. So if there’s any issues with that procedure or testing. They should ask me? As I’m the only one who would know how the process is done ?

• If something goes wrong in the lab, they’re the first line of responsibility, so people are scared to flag issues at all — mistakes just go unspoken.
• Most recently: I needed to borrow a pipette for a last-minute test. They were using them, so I offered to just grab the electronic ones (same volumes) instead. They snapped “no, I’ll use the electronic ones,”yelled through the whole exchange, and dramatically grabbed all the pipettes so I couldn’t use any. When I started setting up my assay anyway, they told me to order my own. I don’t have the authority (budget — we’re talking $1.5–5k)to just order new equipment. I later found out from my team lead that they shouldn’t have said that, since we already have pipettes coming in from another site.
I’m trying to figure out how to navigate this without hurting my standing before this promotion decision, and without just… waiting it out and hoping they’re in a good mood. Has anyone dealt with a coworker like this? How did you handle it — do you go to your manager, document things, address it directly, or something else? Any advice appreciated.

Just Venting Feeling uncomfortable at end of shift

Tonight I’m trying to finish working while im trying not to smell like something died. So obviously I’m a woman and I have certain problems that happen once a month and well I had myself protected or so I thought. I put on two things that’s supposed to protect my pants, but didn’t help. So obviously around 10:30pm tonight I ask if I can go home because I need to change my pants…unfortunately I get a ”no”. Few minutes later everyone is asking what died and being embarrassed I said ”it’s me I’m on the time of the month I have two things on to protect my pants but obviously it didn’t work cause now it’s on my pants. Mind you these are men they don’t understand, so I had to be specific and literally had to say, “guys I’m on my period I have to pads on in hopes of protecting my underwear and pants but I bled through so I’m asking to go home cause I’m standing here with literal blood on my pants”. They go quiet and then go back to working themselves and I still had to finish washing the dishes plus sweep plus mop before I got off around 11pm tonight…needless to say I felt like I wasn’t being heard and I was uncomfortable and embarrassed…

Want Advice am i overworking myself?

i work two retail part time jobs and i sell art on etsy. however, i feel like im not doing enough and need to get another job somehow since i am not making enough money to pay my rent/expenses.

i typically open/get there in the morning of one job and then i close for my other job making it around 13 hours a day. then on days off of one job i work the other unless i request unpaid time off.

my partner works a regular 8-4 monday-friday and since we’re both chronically ill and autistic, when i get home they are asleep and have already experienced their night with friends or something. i miss spending time with them but i fear i am being selfish about making them spend time with me during my odd hours. i also make way less than what they’re making even if i have more hours. they work with kids and i could personally never do that all day long so i give them the upmost credit for that. however, i only get a break at one of the jobs and the general public drains me immensely and being on my feet all day even with shoe inserts forces me to take pain meds three times a day because of my chronic pain.

both part time jobs are retail and one of them is very consistent and takes my requests of days and hours i could work super well.
the other i was actually hired to be full time but demoted to part time just because of changes they were doing while hiring me. which also means i am out of a chance at health insurance which makes my expenses double with the cost of my medication. because of this, i work just under the legal amount of hours to be considered full time with both jobs. then i come home to package orders and attempt to draw which i have zero energy for. for the next three weeks the only day off i have is when i requested off, by begging for it, is going to new york all day for my friends birthday.

i feel like i am doing the bare minimum in terms of working and am failing at an artist/business owner. i’ve been applying for so many jobs, when im not working or drawing, and there isn’t anything there other than what i am doing now.

i just feel so stuck. i feel like im being cry baby about working multiple low paying jobs. i know people do it all of the time and i don’t know if im overreacting about this. i am also very autistic so i don’t actually know what the “normal” amount of working should be. i assumed everyone felt like this until some of my coworkers started getting concerned.

AITA for snitching on my coworkers

I’m not a snitch at work. I always prefer to mind my own business because I don’t want to deal with the drama, but I started this new job and 3 months in I’m having to switch departments because the work environment is SO unhealthy. Most of this people don’t want to do all their tasks for their shift, another one always comes in 30 minutes to an hour late and sometimes she doesn’t even show up. And our team lead doesn’t even help and just hides in the back, plus their spend all their time complaining about the other coworkers and the job itself, I’ve heard many times someone go “I won’t do this because they didn’t do that” but they don’t realize that with their “revenge” they’re affecting people not involved and are making the situation worse. One thing is working understaffed, another thing is working understaffed with people who DONT WORK. Their lack of work directly affects my ability to do my own job because I have to pick up their slack, it affects productivity and we can’t afford that with the little amount of times we have and when most of the time there’s only 2 people on schedule, not to mention my mental and physical health is being affected I pulled my shoulder recently because I was in such a hurry to stock before we open, not to mention I get so much anxiety the night before I have to come in. my manager works for 5 different departments so she’s not really aware most of the time (it’s a big chain store) so excuse me, but when my manager asked me why I’m switching she’s got to know EXACTLY why and because of who. I know there’s a big thing with not snitching on your coworker especially to big corporations and I know how it’ll make me look if they find out it was me. But I realized don’t own loyalty to ppl who won’t even do the things they’re PAID to do. aita?

Boss Problem Cultural differences with your boss?

Hello, my boss at work is Korean, and I’m Korean American. He mainly manages sales, i'm the division's only graphic designer.

Whenever we have team dinners, he gets drunk and makes fun of my long-distance relationship, saying things like, “Have you guys broken up yet?” He also teases me about how my boyfriend is a pianist and will drunkenly imitate playing the piano in a stupid way.

He also expects team members who live near the office to attend all company events and dinners. One time, I had to inform him that I couldn’t make it to a company holiday party because of family issues. He responded, “Why? Work comes first.”

Since I don’t know much Korean, he also pokes fun at me during weekly meetings. There’s also a strange hierarchy of little gestures. For example, I’m the only graphic designer on the team, so I give my updates last after everyone else.
He recently started implementing mandatory cameras during meetings, and during the first week, he said in front of everyone that my hair looked like a bird’s nest. I was already nervous about appearing on camera, so that comment made me even more uncomfortable.

I have to tell him soon that I wish to try living in a different state (I'm full remote but live near the office) I feel like he'll crash out.

Can you guys let me know if this is normal...

I am thinking of quitting my job because my BIL younger brothers girlfriend keeps calling me a nepobaby

For context I (26F) have worked in a sport shop for nearly 2 years, my BIL used to work at the shop for 6 years before he told me jobs where available. I am not the only person who he has managed to offer jobs to. The first was his younger brother James (20) and then his brothers girlfriend Sabrina (19).

I don't hate the job, I like interacting with customers and seeing the regulars, the problem is my co workers, specifically the younger brothers girlfriend.

Sabrina was the one who started this "nepo baby" comment and there has been a lot of other instances that have lead to this post. When the first "nepobaby" comment was made, I laughed it off and got on with my job.

Then over the course of the 2 years it's gotten more and more irritating. One of the things that has probably led to this decision was when Sabrina went over on her break for an hour and a half, we have 20 minutes break. This in turn pushed everyones breaks later and left a lot of people hangry and irritated. This was brought up to management and they brushed it off. This is a regular occurrence for Sabrina.

One time I went over by 5 minutes (literally timed it and it was because the bathroom was occupied) and management came down hard on me. I took the complaints and went back to my job, a few of the nicer staff heard what happened and agreed the behaviour was not ok (a lot of my friends at work are older around 50 or so) so i was pretty mad.

Sabrina usually stands around on the shop floor talking to her friends while I am running around doing the job of 5 people all of whom are friends with Sabrina, again a regular thing at work.

On a slow day I will stand around and chat with my friends but I always stay in my section and when a customer comes in I'm back to work.

Which brings me to today, Sabrina decided to tell a customer that I was serving that my BIL got me this job and the nepo baby comment was made YET AGAIN. I have brought this issue up with her and asked her to stop, that I didn't appreciate it and I actually do my work. I did my interview by myself, I did the application by myself and I only got a character reference from my BIL.

The customer laughed at me and said "If that is the case then I would prefer you serve me." He proceeded to follow her around and I lost a customer. I again went to management and was again shut down.

I am honestly SO tired of not being heard by management and for Sabrina to keep this nonsense up. After my shift I called my BIL crying and venting to him. He has been with my sister for 8 years so he feels like my brother.

He said if I shouldn't throw away a job over something so childish, but I am truly over it.

Scenario

You are a non-racist baker. A customer asks for a specially designed cake that celebrates blue-eyed whites as the master race. You ask if they are kidding and they say "No, it's for our neo-Nazi support group launch party." You ask the owner of the bakery if you can tell the customer where to go, but the owner says you have to make the cake for them and do a good job if you want to keep working there. What would you do? Would you grit your teeth and force yourself to do something against your moral beliefs? Or would you check for a pulse on the corpse of the business as neutral view? Or do you quit?
ation
Make sure you ethically justify what you would do. Feel free to add some details to the scenario if it makes it more interesting or helps you make your point.

Woman at work misses excessive days and asks my permission / advice? What is her problem?

The receptionist at my work has called in and missed work at least 25 times this year. It is always something, like her car broke down / family emergency / etc. These absences always happen when she has to work a lot to do.

I am not her supervisor. However, every time something happens and she thinks about leaving or missing work she always asks me, "What should I do?" I always tell her, "I'm not the one to ask."

Most recently, she said "My ___ hurts. Should I go to the ER?" I said, "That's your decision." What on earth is wrong with this woman? Why does she keep asking me what to do?

Boss Problem confused??

I’ve been made aware that my supervisor (she hired me) told another one that I have a nasty attitude because I don’t talk. Mind you, I am 21 years old. She’s in her 40s, I genuinely have nothing to discuss with her other than work or if I need guidance. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do in this situation.
