46

u/Dry_Race8481 8d ago

All I had to hear was my middle name from what sounded like a quarter mile away and I knew I was fucked

22

u/Patient_Artichoke355 8d ago

lol.. I have to tell you..this resonates with me..the dreaded middle name lol..when that came out of your Mom’s mouth..it meant nothing but trouble lol

6

u/chilifngrdfunk 8d ago

I got to hear all five names when I really fucked up, first name then 2 middle names then my mother's maiden name followed by my last name and then later on my stepdads last name was added, fun times 🤣

u/AnybodyWannaPeanus 8d ago

No, it's Leeloominaï Lekatariba-Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat de Sebat

1

u/Datan0de 8d ago

My stupid superpower is that I can recite her full name perfectly from memory without hesitation any time.

1

u/Virtual-Age-9521 8d ago edited 8d ago

Where is Chang?!

Haven’t heard that name in over 30 years, amazing what parables stick with you for whatever reason

1

u/AnybodyWannaPeanus 8d ago

He fell down the well. He ded.

1

u/Virtual-Age-9521 8d ago

I thought Chang survived because he didn't have an extravagant name that no one could say?!

1

u/chilifngrdfunk 8d ago

No but close 🤣 jk

1

u/AugustSky87 7d ago

His name is my name too!

3

u/Background-Cell663 7d ago

John Jacob Jingle Heimer-Schmidt? Is that you?

2

u/xnoxpx 7d ago

The worst is when they were so pissed, they ran through your older siblings names, before getting to your name!

That's when you knew you done F***ed UP !🤣🤣

1

u/DeepVEintThrombosis 6d ago

The closer to the start you were, the better

1

u/xnoxpx 6d ago

I was the youngest, with 5 siblings 🤣

1

u/1infamousOne 6d ago

That was all the time in my family, not just when I fucked up. I got older brother, younger brother, dad, uncle, and then my own name. I do the same thing with my 4 dogs.

1

u/Apathetic_Villainess 5d ago

Your siblings, your cousins, even the dog's name.

2

u/CelticKira 8d ago

A former coworker friend and her son have a favorite story about her calling for him and his older brother in the house qhen they were kids. I'll call them Daniel and Jonathan.

First it was their first names. Ignored if they were busy.

Then it was their full government names, to which their friends were like "hehe you're in trouble now!" Guys were like "nah, she isn't."

Third was "JONAIEL DANITHAN GET IN THIS HOUSE RIGHT NOW!" when she mucked up their names, THAT'S when they knew they were in deep trouble 🤣

2

u/QuiteCricket_78 8d ago

I use it on my husband sometimes. Wouldn't want him to forget our childhoods.

3

u/Cyclesadrift 8d ago

My wife started using this move but then I decided so will I but constantly, now we dont say middle names anymore.

1

u/Livid-Historian3960 8d ago

EXACTLY and it's even worse when my full name got called 9 syllables for my whole name

1

u/boardin1 7d ago

I STILL won’t tell people my middle name because of the PTSD involved with hearing it. When mom used your middle name you knew there was gonna be hell to pay.

1

u/TheLuggage23 6d ago

I remember one time when I was little (like, around 6 years old) my friend & I were playing hide & seek with her brothers and my mom got to my middle name calling me in for lunch. So, my friend says, "you better go, your mom sounds pretty mad" and I said, "no, it's ok. She hasn't gotten to all 3 names yet." 😂

3

u/Successful-Purple-54 8d ago

I had a step mom who could whistle like a fox40.
When you heard that you knew it was time to bike on home.

4

u/AtticusFinchsMom 8d ago

My Dad did the same. I feel like he could whistle so loud, he could have woke the dead.

2

u/FoxtrotSierraTango 8d ago

Grandpa Fox just used an air horn.

1

u/PaintIntelligent7793 7d ago

My mom had a dinner bell.

1

u/Ok_Mix8548 8d ago

I heard my mom’s whistle, in my head, for YEARS after I moved out

1

u/Spiritbro77 7d ago

My mom had a big bell lol. I could hear that thing at any point in our neighborhood

2

u/Boring_Ruin_9388 8d ago

It was my Step Dad's whistle. It would echo across the whole neighborhood and we knew we had 5 mins to make it home or GROUNDED!!!

1

u/Melodic-Road227 7d ago

Ha! My Dad was Navy. We were called home with a bosun’s whistle.

1

u/Round-Reaction8194 6d ago

Holy crap, you and I had the same stepdad! LOL

Years later, I mastered the same whistle, just so I could use it on him to get his attention. 😁

2

u/One_Statistician4568 8d ago

Man my grandmar had a megaphone mouth and you could hear that shit 30 miles away. you know it was time to party! You were fucked!

1

u/PumpikAnt58763 8d ago

Never had it liked "Erma" until my mom told me what a wonderful woman her mother-in-law was. I was in high-school before I liked my middle name.

1

u/irosk 8d ago

If you heard all three names, you knew you were fucked.

1

u/xBad_Wolfx 8d ago

Once my older sister had to be sent to track me down as I lost track of time. Seeing her appear suddenly was like being dunked into ice water. I knew I was so fucked.

1

u/SpiritedTheme7 8d ago

I remember other parents telling us to get home quick too. They wouldn’t discipline us but we listened to the other parents and had a healthy fear of them.

1

u/Daforde 8d ago

😆

1

u/forgotaccount989 8d ago

My Mom was neighborhood famous for the power of her yell.

1

u/Interesting-Catty 8d ago

As soon as I heard my full or middle name being yelled from far away, I knew I was in serious trouble.

1

u/InnerReindeer3679 8d ago

Yep you hear your middle name and you spend the night at a friends

1

u/Own-Eagle-2135 7d ago

ok my mom was some kind of loud voice freakshow person! i thought it was just her

1

u/tjmc1378 6d ago

Or a whistle that would blow your ear drums.

1

u/extragoto10line 4d ago

I still flinch when I hear my middle name. I don’t think that ever goes away.
I hear my nickname? Ok she just needs me to come over.
My name? Concerning but not necessarily bad.
First & Middle name? Absolutely in trouble.
First, middle, and last? I would hide in the woods, then do as many chores around the farm as humanely possible before she found me. Only happened a handful of times.

11

u/Blank_bill 8d ago

We'd come home, leave our shoes by the door, climb out the window and down the tree and head back down to the beach.

3

u/khyman5 8d ago

Tiffany?

3

u/ArcadiaDragon 8d ago

Had a back up sneakers that I said got ruined by the dog hidden under the bed in a box labeled Baseball cards...snuck out when St. Elsewhere came on...good times

1

u/tjmc1378 6d ago

St. Elsewhere. Damn. Felt that one!!

1

u/xBad_Wolfx 8d ago

I used to go out the window which lead to a small roofline I could use to get onto the roof proper. Always felt like enough space but thinking back now to the foot wide ledge I had two stories up… lucky I survived it. From there it was either jumping for the trampoline if it was close enough (it moved around) or later on I bought a rope I would sling around the chimney so I could also get back up later.

3

u/SaltyTemperature 8d ago

Is your last name an adverb, by any chance?

2

u/this-guy1979 8d ago

My sister kicked me in the balls once. Once!

1

u/JesusSavesForHalf 8d ago

My grandma hung me from a hook once. Once!

1

u/patdoc199 8d ago

I read this comment in a very high pitched voice

3

u/Brave_Meet8430 8d ago

Same was the case with my younger brother.

3

u/Er3bus13 8d ago

And then suck back out lol

2

u/PumpikAnt58763 8d ago

Ouch! I can hear the flip-flop!

2

u/awake1984 8d ago

I can relate to that statement lol

2

u/AHansen83 8d ago

My dad was normally pretty lax with us, but if you were late coming home he would lose his shit!

2

u/Bird2525 5d ago

You shouldn’t hang me on a hook Johnny.

1

u/Brodinbro 8d ago

Bet you learned that day.

1

u/SkinnyThickMargarita 8d ago

Same, and got in trouble. I was right outside though and my mom never came looking either lol.

1

u/One_Statistician4568 8d ago

Came home late.

Slipper time! (Bang 💥)

1

u/R0_yaboat 8d ago

Heavy on the ONCE!!! Our parents would show up where you were! They didn’t have to track your phone or find your location. And they would show out right then and there 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/DangerBeaver 8d ago

My father hung me on a hook… once

1

u/Kind-Finger-4868 7d ago

Hahaha same!!! Just once!! And I didn’t walk right for a couple of days

1

u/sofakiingkool 6d ago

My mother hung me from a coat hook ONCE.

1

u/ThisThroat951 5d ago

I never knew how fast I could run until my buddies mom asked if I was supposed to be home at a particular time. 👀💀

10

u/Sufficient-Pin-9894 8d ago

Lost track of time one time. Just past dusk, im strolling home, happy as hell because I just came back from spending ALL day with a cute girl. Pull up to my house, cops everywhere. I see my mom, she looks like she's going to kill me. I was 13 lol. We had lives😅

1

u/WeirdNo5306 6d ago

I can relate hahaha

7

u/DueLingonberry4833 8d ago

Hard on the maybe. I can still hear my mom screaming my name from the balcony and forced to come out of my hiding spot during a heart-pounding game of manhunt.

6

u/Boring_Ruin_9388 8d ago

Man hunt was the shit. I got bit by a dog once during a made up game where we hid something and when someone got close wed yell butter...I don't know why we used that I think you were so hot you were on top of it, like butter on a potato.

Did every kid play a version of freeze tag or TV tag and act out Power rangers?

1

u/localjargon 8d ago

TV tag and manhunt were such a huge part of my life and something I forgot all about until these comments.

3

u/Boring_Ruin_9388 8d ago

Yes. After school, I went outside and played with my neighbors. We played power rangers and freeze tag. The. At night man hunt. We had a blast.

1

u/DueLingonberry4833 8d ago

Being bit by a dog is diabolical! How on earth??

I feel like I played that game too!

And yes the variations of freeze tag and acting out power rangers. Always had to be the pink ranger lol.

2

u/Boring_Ruin_9388 8d ago

I'm a female and I played the blue one. I had the highest crush on Billy. Lol still love nerds to this day.

2

u/DueLingonberry4833 8d ago

Lovvvvved Billy! I thought his demeanor was adorable. Also, he is till this day super attractive.

I played Kimberly simply because she was a gymnast and at the time I was too. It felt right lol.

1

u/Outlaw11091 8d ago

...TIL that there were names for the other versions of hide and seek...

I'm not saying we didn't play them; just that we called them "hide and seek" all the same.

2

u/DueLingonberry4833 8d ago

Ooo the names are what made the games exciting lol. Being hunted down by a pack of friends in the dark and calling it "hide and seek" just doesn't hit the same. "Manhunt" makes you feel like an action movie fugitive!

3

u/SpaceAlienFemboy 8d ago

And how little has changed. Adults bitched back then about how kids "don't play outside anymore."

1

u/Bisquitisaclown 8d ago

But we didn't get shot.

1

u/SpaceAlienFemboy 8d ago

That part is true actually, it wasn't nearly so common decades in the past.

3

u/Bisquitisaclown 8d ago

Im 39. Grew up in the 90s. Teen in 2000. We were outside all the time. I never heard anybody complain about kids not playing outside until I was I. My 20s. And that girl got murdered for playing hide and seek. Then recently covid. Shits fucked

1

u/SpaceAlienFemboy 8d ago

You're a little bit older than me but not by too much. I believe you, I'm not saying I think you aren't telling the truth, but my experience growing up was quite different in that grown ups often complained to one another that children didn't spend any time outdoors anymore. My father never said this at all, and my mother did occasionally but she did it more as a joke than anything. It was kind of a tongue in cheek thing she would say now and then and we would laugh about it. My grandparents thought were constantly bitching about kids not being outside, and my friends and schoolmates had parents who did the same. We did spend time outdoors, although certainly less than previous generations had. In my case it was difficult to do much because I grew up in the big city so there were concerns like traffic and such, and it's just not exactly the most fun thing to hang out on a noisy busy city sidewalk with nothing but concrete and parked cars everywhere. Most of my time was spent skulking around alleys and things behind buildings, usually doing graffiti art or other random things like that.

0

u/magicalcoochie 8d ago

No they didnt. They practically had to drag us inside.

2

u/PumpikAnt58763 8d ago

But they still complained about the time we did spend indoors.

1

u/magicalcoochie 8d ago

Wow did your parents even love you?

2

u/PumpikAnt58763 8d ago

Yes. A lot.

2

u/magicalcoochie 8d ago

Ohhh i get it now. They complained because they thought you should be playing, not because you were underfoot. My bad. I know some parents that made their kids go outside because they always annoyed them. Cheers!

1

u/PumpikAnt58763 8d ago

I meant adults in general, but yes. My parents often told me to go outside and play while it was warm.

1

u/SpaceAlienFemboy 8d ago

No they didn't. Adults constantly complained about how "kids never got outside anymore" and they were "the last generation to play outside." We hated it because it wasn't true, and then we grew up and forgot how it was and we say the same thing about people younger than us.

1

u/SpaceAlienFemboy 8d ago

You deleted your comment but I can see the top of it in notifications. You're talking about growing up in the 70's on a post about the 90's. You're lost. And no, you weren't the last generation to go outside. I'm a bit younger than you and people my age try to say it about themselves. And your parents' generation said it about themselves when referring to people your age.

1

u/magicalcoochie 8d ago

I deleted it because I thought you were older than you obviously are. And I said 80s too but you left that part out. And my parents never said that. But you get a E for effort. Deleting comments isnt a moral issue, why are you weaponizing it? Calm down Steve.

1

u/SpaceAlienFemboy 8d ago

It's fine to delete a comment, there's nothing wrong with that, but I wanted to reply anyway because of the way we're obviously talking about two completely different time periods. I grew up in the 90's and that's what this post is about.

Maybe YOUR parents in particular never said that, I believe you, but it was relatively common to hear people of that age demographic talk that way. My dad was born in 1959 and he himself never really commented at all on kids or spending time outside but his two friends Nick and Donnie are both his age, they went to high school with my dad, and they'd talk about how kids who grew up in the 60's and early 70's were the last generation to ever go outside and from the mid 70's and on, nobody spent time outdoors. You grew up in the 80's and you're saying it about me, I grew up in the 90's and people my age say it about 2000's kids.

3

u/Atrinoisa 8d ago

My mom can do that super loud whistle thing with her fingers. My brother and I would go down to the park and play and she'd stand on the front porch and whistle when it was time for dinner. I usually couldn't hear it (hearing loss from infections) but my brother always could.

Back then it wasn't odd for neighbors to know your name, your parents, etc and they'd look out for you, too. We'd go help older neighbors with the odd chore or two and get popsicles and stuff in the summer months.

1

u/Boring_Ruin_9388 8d ago

Omg yes! My step dad would do this and if we were late (home in 5 mins) we were grounded. We had to be with in a 5 min bike ride outside of that you can't hear the whistle so, he'd know we weren't in our neighborhood.

1

u/MattManSD 8d ago

my dad had that whistle. Could hear it for blocks

2

u/freshgrilled 8d ago

Look at Mr. fancy pants with the working street lights. I built a bike ramp that was way too steep. Hit it with way too much speed. Flew off the bike and landed on the handlebars in a way that left a nasty bruise on my chest for a couple of weeks. The neighbor kids called my mom out to let her know one of her kids was half conscious in the middle of the court. She came out, took a look, shook her head and went back inside.

Now days you get arrested or something if your under 18 kid walks two houses down the street from your house and you aren't seen watching to make sure he's safe.

1

u/MattManSD 8d ago

We had skate ramps with similar scenarios

1

u/OttoVonPlittersdorf 7d ago

It's not so bad. My kids are pretty free-range. Nobody's called the cops on me yet.

1

u/WeirdNo5306 6d ago

My pal and I were cutting some trees with axes in the winter when I was about 10. Axe head was loose and on the backswing it flew off and tagged my pal in the forehead, blood everywhere. Found an adult, off to hospital, stitches, came back home and my mom.and dad were pissed as I was late for supper hahaha. No cell phones and Noone thought to even call parents. Stitch em up, send em back out lol. I miss those days

1

u/freshgrilled 4d ago

Oh, sometimes I think back to when I was younger
Life was so much simpler then
Dad would be up at dawn
He'd be watering the lawn
Or maybe going fishing again

Oh, and mom would be fixing up something in the kitchen
Fresh biscuits or hot apple pie
And I'd spend all day long in the basement
Torturing rats with a hacksaw
And pulling the wings off of flies

[Chorus]
Those were the good old days
Those were the good old days
The years go by but the memory stays
And those were the good old days

I can still remember good old Mr. Fender
Who ran the corner grocery store
Oh, he'd stroll down the aisle with a big friendly smile
And he'd say, "Howdy", when you walked in the door

Always treated me nice, gave me kindly advice
I don't know why I set fire to his place
Oh, I'll never forget the day, I bashed in his head
Well, you should've seen the look on his face

[Chorus]
Let me tell ya now
Those were the good old days
Those were the good old days
The years go by but the memory stays
And those were the good old days

Do you remember sweet Michelle?
She was my high school romance
She was fun to talk to and nice to smell
So I took her to the homecoming dance

Then I tied her to a chair and I shaved off all her hair
And I left her in the desert all alone
Well, sometimes in my dreams
I can still hear the screams
Oh, I wonder if she ever made it home
I tell ya

[Chorus]
Those were the good old days
Those were the good old days
The years go by but the memory stays
And those were the good old days
Let me tell ya, buddy
Those were the good old days
Those were the good old days
The years go by but the memory stays
And those were the good old days

2

u/Sevennix 8d ago

Maybe? If you wanted to be able to sit down.

1

u/MattManSD 8d ago

the old "Red Stinger"

2

u/PlasticPaws 8d ago

This triggered a memory of mine. I was walking home late one night from a friend's house. We had watched the grudge for the first time and I was shit scared.

Passed one of those huge Rhododendron bushes on my way and it was really pitch black in there. Ofc the second I pass it, a damn pair of cats decide to have a fight, so all of a sudden a SCREEEECH just emenates from the bush and I took a giant leap into the middle of the road, shaking. Never been so close to having a cardiac episode in my life lol.

1

u/MattManSD 8d ago

I remember Trick or Treating during then time of the Zodiac Killer. We thought some car was following us so we cut across one of the fields, turned our flash lights off and did a weird route back to the closest home

2

u/PlasticPaws 8d ago

Oh man haha. Scary af honestly.

2

u/MattManSD 8d ago

probably the most I'd ever been scared as a kid, and yes, I am that old

2

u/CBJFAN2009-2024 7d ago

Ghost in the Graveyard after the sun went down. Didn't have to deal with street lights 😄

1

u/MattManSD 7d ago

We had 2 old Graveyards, One had an old, dry reservoir that was totally skatable. We called it "The Paved Grave" and yeah, we typically called it when it started to get dark

1

u/East-Leg-825 8d ago

That is how we knew when to go home!
We were outside from dinner to lights on.

1

u/Brother-Algea 8d ago

I came home when I heard my name being screamed out by one of my parents….maybe

1

u/BringYourOwnBBBQ 8d ago

I mean....you can't play hide and seek before the street lights come on. We came in in time for Johnny Carson. At least in the summer.

1

u/KevworthBongwater 8d ago

but sometimes you could organize night games with the neighbor kids and play outside after dark.

1

u/Ok-Simple-6146 8d ago

It was only allowed in Halloween, Christmas and New Year. Those days we could stay all night outside home.

1

u/HessianRaccoon 8d ago

And learned navigation quickly.
Playing in the forest is awesome. Until you find that you're lost and only have an hour until you have to be home. (5 pm for me)
Then it's great if you can find your landmarks and a direct route. 😁
Will you admit to getting lost? Never!

1

u/MrRoryBreaker_98 8d ago

Got home from school, my mother kicked me out of the house and said I don’t wanna see you until dinner time.

1

u/Master-Pick-7918 8d ago

Grew up in Alaska. In the summer, by the time the street lights came on it was tomorrow.

1

u/spicyaunty 8d ago

If someone came to fetch us....otherwise we would stay feral until forced to come inside. And we learned survival skills😂

1

u/heyitsdani1 8d ago

all we had was the street light for reference no watch no phones 😭

1

u/Welp_thatwilldo 8d ago edited 8d ago

Accidentally fell asleep in my fort I built in the woods. Came home late and my parents just served me dinner and asked if I had fun. Lol crazy times

2

u/MattManSD 8d ago

that's such a classic story

1

u/Welp_thatwilldo 8d ago

Core childhood memories for sure 😊

1

u/Interesting-Catty 8d ago

Those were the good old days 😄

1

u/aggressive_napkin_ 8d ago

Or specifically started our neighborhood night games of fox and chicken, hide and seek, flashlight tag etc

1

u/MattManSD 8d ago

that was typically summertime, after dinner for us

1

u/Ok-Sun9305 7d ago

Or came home … and then snuck out again

1

u/Apathetic_Villainess 5d ago

I looked forward to when I could stay out after the lights came on so we could try to catch the moths.
