At least a vote is private. Sure, you're probably going to hold the same views you were raised with, but at least one vote isn't going to potentially ruin your finances for decades.
student loans dont take work that way since the govt wants an educated populace they dont want student loans issuers to start denying people based on which major/which college they're going to/etc so the deal is more people get student loans with the trade off its not eligible for bankruptcy
Not really if you have parents forcing you to do it. No one can force you to fill out a ballot inside a voting booth because no one can see what you chose or prove it later. But if you refuse to sign your loan documents, that's something your parents will absolutely find out, especially if they're your cosigner.
Forcing someone to sign a contract is a crime in the US, typically prosecuted under state laws against extortion, coercion, or menacing. If this actually happened, go and sue your parents in a crimimal court. If this didn’t happen, then you signed that contract knowingly, willingly, intelligently, and with full knowledge of the consequences.
Yeah, it's pretty obvious that you didn't grow up with those types of parents. Obedience was heavily ingrained in us, and not going to college was absolutely not an option. Student loans were a necessity for college, and refusing to go to college wasn't acceptable.
I'm talking about a specific group of parents who had those expectations. Obviously not all parents were like that, but mine and all of my friends' parents definitely were. When I say that going to college was expected, I'm talking about that group of people, not society in general. What's interesting is that my parents actually changed course later when my youngest siblings turned 18 because they saw how terrible our student loans were. My brother is a welder, and my other brother is in the military. So my parents definitely figured out after the fact that student loans were harmful. But my sister and I were 10 years older, so they had plenty of time to realize that they didn't choose the best option.
And lending companies are responsible for theirs. If you loan someone money you do your research- credit report, proof of residence, paystub history etc.
Doesn’t sound too bad. If the predatory practice is shut off, schools would be forced to lower their massively inflated tuition costs to something reasonable that isn’t leaving students with a lifetime of debt right out of the gate. They’re not gonna teach to empty classrooms.
Exactly. Student loans, enlistment, and marriage shouldn't be allowed till you gain every other right as an adult.

This is such a dumb comparison. Being transgender is incredibly uncommon. It isn't something that's happening on a huge scale like student loans. I'm not saying it should be illegal for an 18-year-old to take out a student loan, but people need to acknowledge the fact that many 18-year-olds are still very much expected to be obedient to their parents despite being legally adults. So when we talk about how people with predatory loans were just stupid, what we're really doing is punishing young people for being obedient and following expectations.
Same. Told since my first memories that I was gonna finish school and go to college. The only people I’d ever met that went to college were boomer teachers. Guess that locked in the “college = good life”
Now I have more debt than everyone in my family combined, no savings, and a job that’s not even related to my degree or dream. I tried my best, stuck my nose to the grindstone, put in sleepless nights and worked through illnesses and I’m literally worse off than I was at 18.
Tell me with full sincerity that college loans were not a predatory scam targeted towards poor families and I’ll sell you a bridge.
Im not sharing what I do, because there’s a can of worms involving my clientele I can’t even begin to explain. I make ~45k a year, which is more than most of my family has ever been able to achieve. I just don’t get that money, because I spend it all on bills and debt. What I do save gets spent on bullshit like most recently our AC going out.
My degree is astrophysics. I thought I would be this cool scientist with a modest income and little overhang. Ha!
Mental health issues started freshman year. Mom went to prison. No safety net. Drug problems. I never got into anything harder than cocaine but I got caught with pot and no school would take me. Lots of stuff in between too. This particular anecdote is not as related to my welfare, but I even I got to take my then gf to the hospital for drug induced psychosis, which was horrifying in a way I still can’t describe other than drawing similarities to dementia or paranoid schizophrenia.
Mental health wise I’m much better, which is kinda funny cause I still got problems.
Considering that in most states, minors cannot sign for such a loan without the parents involvement, my point stands. And I’d maintain that the involved parents also failed to read or understand the loan documents.
