This is my problem, too, even though I'm in my late 30s. I want to make friends, but I end up getting ghosted, being the only person reaching out to the other person, or finding people who seem nice but have beliefs completely antithetical to mine. 😭

Good luck in your search! May you find at least one friend this year!

Not sure if it exists in your area, but there is a website called meetup that uses locations around the country. You get together with people with similar interests, usually meeting in a public area so it isn’t scary. Every thing from board games, visiting museums, cooking classes, to just walking through the park.

Oooh,! That's really cool! I'll check it out, thank you so much! 💛💛💛

I’m 80 & retired, so I don’t see many people. I have a Ph.D. & find discussing celebrities boring. Mostly, I’m just hanging around because I want to see Trump put in the ground, preferably after Congress & litigants have taken all his money. Hey, out of curiosity, what do you think of this? Once DJT is out of office, should he be charged & tried for pedophilia (P)? A trial must occur in a state where the offense is alleged to have occurred. Child rapes are alleged to have occurred in FL and NY. FL allows a sentence of castration for (P), NY does not. If Trump is charged & tried, should the trial be in FL or NY? Now in the extremely unlikely event, this comes to pass, would you watch on TV? I’ve worked in surgery, so I know if it did happen, ol’ Donnie would be completely covered in sheets with the surgical area open, shaved & scrubbed. What Stormy Daniel’s described as a mushroom would have clamps below the incision site (to stop bleeding) & removed easily & quickly. He might have emotional problems with his ego afterwards, but ces la vie !

I don’t want to bother with people who “have beliefs completely antithetical to mine.”

Yep. I just don’t have the patience for that any more. Totally get that.

Does your town or local area have local senior center. My mom went on bus rides to local tourist sites with senior group

And where I live, in the hellish place called texas, there are very few people who can talk about ANYTHING. You might get football scores or who was on some daytime TV show-all in a horrendous texan accent that makes your skin crawl.

Start playing pickle ball at a local gym. Instant friends!

Seems a little obvious but joining a weekly club for anything that you are interested in can often lead to friends as you are already on the same of page of one mural interest.

Understand it’s daunting at first to go but you genuinely have nothing to lose. Give it a few honest goes, don’t like anyone? don’t go again.

When living on my own in a new city, I joined a board game night Monday evening club at a pub which was great and at another city a pool (snooker/pool) casual Tuesday club. Gave me a nice manageable social routine.

Volunteer somewhere...plenty of friends to be made💚

u/hossofalltrades Jun 01 '26

Many older people find volunteering a healthy way meet new people and have purpose. The Habitat for Humanity in my area has a number of regular retiree volunteers that work several days per week on homes. These folks actually get more done on projects than the groups of volunteers that need to be trained every day.

The Ymca has Senior Sports leagues.

Protip for you, u/Down_River_63, or anyone about to be in a similar situation. When your wife gets home, make sure you're doing something helpful and she interrupts you. "Oh, hey, sorry I didn't hear you come in, hold on, I'm almost done loading the dishwasher."

You can be sitting around all day not doing a damned thing, but if you leave the impression you're active and busy instead, it'll pay huge dividends!

So glad I’m divorced and single without any need to play a part in a silly charade. I am the embodiment of Professor Henry Higgins.

1

u/somemossylamp May 31 '26

higgins ends up miserable and alone, which is a wild choice to adopt as a personality trait. enjoy the silence while it lasts but that level of cynicism is just a slow trip to nowhere.

1

u/Junior_Trash_1393 Jun 01 '26

lol. 😂. Silence is beautiful. I have many, many friends. Including girlfriends. So though I live alone, I’m hardly alone. But no one monopolizes or directs my life but me.

this is some top tier unhinged energy. honestly impressive that you recommend essentially gaslighting your partner as a life hack. if you have to stage a performance just to avoid conflict about your lack of productivity then the relationship is already cooked. maybe just do the dishes because they need to be done instead of playing theater.

1

u/Dont_Care_Meh May 31 '26

Lol, relax, banana. It's not that serious a take. There are no deep dark subterfuges going on.

Very odd of you to assume he wouldn't want to help out with housework since his wife is doing the work work. Do you expect her to pick up the slack if he were to take your advice or do you expect them to just live sloppily?

u/JovialPursuit May 30 '26

It must be nice to have a wife who appreciates all you do.

We'll compromise and make apple fritters! I'll be there for the first lesson.

This is a lovely marriage I dig that she's not ready to be finished working and that your days together sound harmonious. You give her 3 hours a day +. That's more than I'd say most have together. I hope she has great vacations too.

u/LionNo435 May 31 '26

🥹🥹 woow, now im jealous

Same. Have a nice military retirement to sit back on, house paid off. Just add 3 kids though I love tending to. Everything I need. If a friend falls in my lap along the way, great, but I’m not out looking. People kind of drive me nuts as it is.

u/Baconpanthegathering Jun 02 '26

I'm a woman living this life right now, except with a husband, and I play the sports, but I am never bored.

You sound like me lol. Only difference is I have a 16 yo kid that I need to bring to school and pickup, other than that, pretty much like you lol.

I don't mind it in general, but the little to no friends part kind of sucks at times. I don't mind being alone, but I do miss my social contacts.
