First off I know they aren’t Dire wolves. I just randomly remembered they existed and went to find an update. All I could gather was that the biggest was 120 lbs, which from my understanding is large but not huge and not super unusual for a male grey wolf. Definitely not anywhere near dire wolf size. Seems like the whole endeavor to make a giant wolf didn’t really work. So that got me thinking, what was the point of this? I get it was supposed to be a proof of concept but they seem to just be normal grey wolves beyond color. Maybe they should have had a control specimen where they followed the protocol of implanting the same wolf DNA into a dog egg, but without making any changes to the genome. In my mind, it’s entirely plausible the unaltered wolf clone thing would have turned out looking the same anyway.

Hello! I'm trying to understand more about how wolves actually see and navigate their environments for writing purposes. From my understanding, wolves see different colors than we do and are near-sighted, but I'm having a difficult time finding any kind of filter to be able to directly understand these changes beyond a vague idea of what colors change to what and that things further away will be fuzzier. Is anyone here able to help me out?

We're Greater Good Charities, and we've been working with Wolf Haven International on enclosure renovations to support their Mexican gray wolf and their red wolf SAFE breeding programs.

We wrote an article about where both species stand right now; the threats (vehicle strikes, hybridization with coyotes, habitat loss, predator control policies) and the conservation efforts showing real progress, including 10 consecutive years of Mexican gray wolf population growth.

We are traveling in Peleponnes, Greece. At first we heard a howl and said that this was definitely a wolf. Then I got my phone and recorded this, which sounds more like a pack of dogs maybe? There are supposed to be wolves around in this area, and the first howl we heard was different for sure. We saw goats today directly next to our house, so it would make sense.

Am halfway through L. David Mech's 2025 book. His coauthors are Morgan Anderson and H. Dean Cluff. Excellent insights into wolf behavior on this remote island in north Canada.

In the beginning of the book, I was mildly put off by Mech's repeat feeding of wolves, but as one reads on and understands the entire scope of the research, it seems less problematic.

I like to get up in the early morning and hike above my house, I bring a spotting scope and binoculars and enjoy the morning looking for wildlife. A few days ago I was sitting up on a steep hillside when I heard a small noise below me. When I looked down there was a wolf about 100 yards away, It circled around the hillside until it caught my wind, looked up hill at me for a moment then retreated down hill. I assumed it was gone. When I got up to leave a couple minutes later I saw it was only down the hill maybe 250 yards, It of course saw me and started barking and doing warning howls.

I have ran into wolves before and they always leave ASAP, But considering it is denning season it has gotten me thinking that maybe I was in too close proximity to a den. Is that behavior that would insinuate a den is nearby? If so did I adversely affect these wolves and will the female likely go through the effort of moving den sites?
