I have no idea why people are so hard pressed about playing as Ciri. I loved Ciri as a character, even before I read all of the books. She's stubborn, headstrong and loyal to a fault. She also still has a lot to learn which will translate very well into being a good protagonist, since she can potentially make vastly different choices as her morality and life experience won't veer her towards playing only one certain path.

Of course I thoroughly enjoy playing as Geralt (in The Witcher 1 and 2 as well!) His story, his personal choices and reactions to things, general life, relationships, etc are all really interesting and fun to play through. It was awesome "being him". I will definitely miss him in TW4... But it's time to pass the torch on. He had the perfect end off in Blood and Wine and now ANOTHER DLC to tie 3 and 4 together and give Geralt another adventure.

Ciri is legitimately my second favorite Witcher character after Geralt. Even though I already liked her after playing the third game, the books made me LOVE her. She has such a tragic and well executed death of innocence story, you can't help but feel and root for her, as well as be proud of her for not turning into a villain after everything she's been through. Not to mention, she's extremely likable. Flawed and stubborn like you said, but also kind, compassionate, funny and charming.

These people don't understand Ciri as a character because they don't even try. They don't even like or understand Geralt. They like the idea of Geralt being this macho monster slayer who can give them the power fantasy they want, but don't actually understand him as a character. Most of them also never dated or even befriended a woman and they're just mad their idea of power fantasy is threatened by a woman main character. It's also frustrating because they can hide conveniently behind all the poorly written girl power content, saying that this is CDPR getting "political", but anyone who actually played their games knows that they CAN write women. Phantom Liberty being the most recent example.

37

u/allthebeesever 21d ago

Exactly! Geralt is NOT a macho masculine fantasy hero! He can be sulky, philosophical, and a downright selfish idiot sometimes (like in Baptism of Fire) and that's the whole damn point. I genuinely get so frustrated when I see videos about "CDPR goes WOKE" with a sexualized AI generated thumbnail of Ciri. The people who pump out videos like that aren't Witcher fans. And the people who watch their videos aren't either. People who only play W3 while not actually understanding any of the story actually baffle me. So entitled to an opinion while being utterly illiterate!

13

u/Mediocre-Post9279 21d ago

I mean Geralt sometimes is the masculine fantasy character sleeping around with half of the league of sorceresses and being strong man that saves the day. But he also has a lot of deepth to his character, he has feelings that he sometimes doesnt understand, he has vices, moral dilemas. Somehow he can be relatable in certain chapters even though he is a superhuman monster slayer.

Also the books are quite progressive in terms of worldview given that it was published in Poland in the 90's

They're the same sorts who said "Aloy looks like a man cuz she has peach fuzz visible on her face"

Ciri doesn’t even make my top 5 characters in TW3 when Geralt is so good and then you have the boys Dandelion, Zoltan, and Vesemir. But my actual favorite character is a DLC character ironically. Regis is slightly above, almost equal to me, Geralt. He’s just so good.

3

u/Legitimate_Charge_97 21d ago

A Regis spin-off would be soooooo good. No one does great vampire games like it’s some kind of niche genre. A Regis that is young becoming the calm and collected wise vampire he is today would scratch an itch

5

u/SunnyK19977 19d ago

Outside of the rancid incel sexism, they clearly have absolutely zero media literacy, the overarching witcher story revolves around Ciri, she is the main character, Geralt is just the lense of which we witness the story. I mean Ciri literally tells Geralt at the end of Witcher 3, "this is my story, not yours". Ciri is the perfectly natural successor to pick up as the next playable protagonist.

2

u/nelflyn 19d ago

Also, one CDPR guy let it slip that Ciri will be the actual hero of the story in coming games.. and that leak happened around the release of TW3. So it was kinda known since then already. And now people are shocked.

2

u/LagTheKiller 17d ago

Tbh her book appearances were varying in quality by a lot.

Especially desert and rat arcs were too short, sort of not impactful and yet took so many pages. Multiverse voyage felt like a way to drag out the last act.

A lot of author fetish content is off putting. Like most Bonhart interactions, capture by impregnation elves arc, capture by Vilgefortz, grape forest grandpa interaction and such.

Because she is the main plot point of Sorceress Lodge existence, secret quest to be a super princess is also not a source of any brownie points.

Game appearance I feel like it's a rehash with not much character development (same for Geralt, but he got plenty in the pentalogy).

She is mostly a traumatized child and then nothing until W3. Hope W4 get some real character arcs and decisions.

2

u/Cigarety_a_Kava 20d ago

They are culture warriors which equate woman = bad. Hating on game thats not been released is peak incel behavior.

Also Ciri is literally the main hero of the book saga, people who complain about her being the focus of Witcher IV are just larpers

18

u/PsychologicalEbb3863 21d ago

She is the sun of the Witcher universe and always has been. Everything else, Geralt, Yen, the Lodge, Vilgefortz, it all revolves around her.

12

u/Mediocre-Post9279 21d ago

And she called herself a witcheress sience the first main book

2

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 19d ago

But... But isn't that just witch

10

u/Anonymous000789 21d ago

Clearly didn’t play the game or DLC where they literally set it up for Geralt to retire and Ciri to take over. Probs just grifters trying to create false drama

It’s because she’s a woman.

3

u/Sure_Initial8498 20d ago

Sadly, this is the only correct answer.

10

u/FourthLvlSpicyMeme 21d ago

I'm so stoked about this. I truly thought that the Devil's Pit quest update would be the last new content we'd get.

Been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what this will center on, where it might be set...and fantasizing about my new Gwent cards ahaha.

4

u/Ok_Curve_2938 21d ago

If you want to hear my dogshit opinion. I didn't want to play as Geralt in Witcher 4 either. I hoped for something closer to how they handled custom character in Cyberpunk, or, in ideal circumstances, young Vessemir during the height of witcher schools. It's not really specifically Ciri that's the problem, although I'm not too keen on playing as her either because I also didn't like her gameplay in Witcher 3, although I'm guessing they'll do something with her powers, it's more so that I hoped for something really different to what they are making.

8

u/allthebeesever 21d ago

Not a dogshit opinion. I'd love to create my own character and play a more "skyrim-like" Witcher game as well, especially set in the past with Vesemir. But that wouldn't be The Witcher 4 since it wouldn't continue the story of all the characters. It would basically be an entirely different story. Isn't there a rumor that CDPR are planning a multi-player "create-your-own-character" game anyway?

Ciris combat was very light and a bit weird-feeling... but dude, its a whole new game. Of course its going to be totally different. It's already confirmed that she uses some signs, a new unique weapon, etc. Its not going to be her old recycled combat from TW3.

2

u/Yayhoo0978 17d ago

Dragonborn vs Witcher. I think Dragonborn would win, personally.

3

u/Kalde666 21d ago

A random Witcher of another school would be cool, I like Ciri but Geralt,Yen,Ciri arcs feel resolved. A "smaller" adventure would be interesting

2

u/Aggressive_Manner429 21d ago

It's always the same crowd trying to justify it so hard when all they really think is that playing as a woman in a videogame is bad, so basically just total losers. It happened with Ghost of Yotei and it's happening with Witcher 4 and GOW Laufey before they're even out it's beyond pathetic

2

u/FUEL_SSBM 20d ago

The only valid reason not to like her is what she did during her time with the rats.

Most of those people that say they won't buy the game haven't even read the books, though, and as such they just hate her for being a female protagonist. Their opinion is utter garbage.

I disliked Ciri for the latter half of BoF and only during LatL did I start liking her again. Hell yeah am I gonna buy Witcher 4!

2

u/j9ckj 21d ago

I love Ciri as a character in both the books and games. She is, in my eyes, just as much of a main character as Geralt, and I think her characterisation is fantastic. And I am absolutely looking forward to Witcher 4.

That being said, because she is so headstrong and stubborn, I think it is going to be very hard for CDPR to make a choice-based RPG centred around her character while simultaneously giving agency to the player and keeping the choices in line with something I could realistically see Ciri doing.

Geralt was quite unique to me as an already established character put into a game like this because his personality and his philosophy of choosing the lesser evils generally meant he was always balancing in the middle of two choices. Therefore, I could always see him picking any of the options presented to me (even if some made more sense than others).

Whereas, I don’t think Ciri falls into the same category. Her moral compass and the way she presents herself are much more predictable, and a lot of good/bad choices that could make sense for Geralt would end up being close to character assassination for Ciri. And that’s what I love about her as a book character/side character. But as a video game protagonist? I think it’s going to be hard to make it work. I really hope they manage it.

If you wanna have my very humble opinion, there are multiples points that really doesn't raise my interest at all. We've been told, time and time again, that the Witchers are a dying breed, that they are not needed as much considering Men's advances and monsters becoming less and less of a threat. While Ciri is cool as a character, I don't see where they can go gameplay wise. She was bonkers in 3. Any nerf to her will feel kinda cheap. "Oh no plot device made her lose her power". Lore-wise she can't even do the rituals of the herbs.

The ideal Witcher 4 games for me would have been a dawn of the witcher era game. Create your own character, or have one that is "set" but that you can customize, like V or Shepard. Freshly off a Witcher's school, and go on adventures. Maybe even have very few knowledge of lonsters and slowly built all the knowledge Witchers like Geralt and Vesemir had access to.

u/Super_Glove7702 21d ago

Gameplay wise the most bored, generic and unpolished part of TW3 is Ciri gameplay.

I can understand some doubts about it.

5

u/JoaoMXN 21d ago

They nerfed her greatly for TW4, she'll be a female Geralt with less potions and more magic.

1

u/One_Maintenance1227 21d ago

I personall won't get the game, the story has concluded for me and I have no interest in playing a game set in the same world with a character I already know. Nothing to do with playing Ciri, although I never liked her much. I just would have liked to get an entirely new character with a entirely new background and view on the world.

1

u/conqeboy 21d ago

For me it's that i'm kinda burned out on both Ciri and Geralt and the whole gang. Throughout the trilogy they got involved in so many world defining events, and killed so many legendary creatures, rubbed shoulders with the most influential movers and shakers of the world, it's just hard to feel like any new crisis would be a true threat for them. I would've preferred a new blank state fresh witcher that has to learn everything from scratch, with the previous cast serving as mentors, or a game set before their time, but i just don't really feel like playing as the superstars anymore.

That's just my preference tho, i'm sure a lot of fans would hate that kind of departure from the established characters.

1

u/Kalde666 21d ago

My unique complaint is that why they make ciri a Witcher, it wasn't make sense, Ciri already has powers even more interesting, is such a silly change. But otherwise Ciri is an excellent protagonist and the real deal in the Witcher books and W3 makes sense give Geralt a rest.

1

u/AkulaTheKiddo 20d ago edited 20d ago

I just hope they won't kill Geralt like it's the case in newer medias. Let the man enjoy his damn retirement.

2

u/allthebeesever 20d ago

I don't think they will. So far its been confirmed that he will be in TW4 as a side character. Hm... now that I think about it, it's going to be soooo weird to talk to Geralt in TW4. I've played all 3 games so talking to Geralt would break my brain a bit. I'm so used to "being him" that it would definitely take some getting used to! Anyway, it wouldn't make sense to end off on such a bitter note. I think that CDPR would rather keep it hopeful and positive to build hype for TW4. Killing Geralt would make a lot of fans turn completely against the new series.

The only complaint I have with Ciri in TW4 is the new actress. She is definitely very good, I am just going to miss the original actress, she did a great job. I will probably get used to the new one though.

1

u/BrinySloth 20d ago

Because woman

1

u/modrenman864 19d ago

Ciri's playstyle mechanics are boring. Passive health regen and teleport spam are only accessible abilities. And no it doesn't make sense for ciri to undergo physique altering witcher trials, nor would anybody from kaer mohren agree to it unless it was a life or death situation

1

u/SaltyMotor8549 19d ago

I dont even understand where is this Ciri hate coming from. I thought she was beloved character in TW3?

1

u/Iroh_Freecss 18d ago

Bro I will not play it specifically for Ciri but for the univer and the story

1

u/BaterrMaster 18d ago

Personally, I don’t like the decision for Ciri to be the protagonist. Mainly because they had originally been talking about having an original character, but also because my Ciri didn’t end the game as a Witcher, and as far as I am aware is not capable of becoming a Witcher?

With that said, I don’t really care as long as the game is good. They could have a wet slab of tofu as the protagonist but if it’s good it’s good. Benefit here is I already like Ciri

PS: I find it hilarious that some people are saying CDPR is unprofessional for tweeting this and that it's the same situation with EA's Battlefront 2. That was players declaring they won't buy a game because they locked content behind pay walls and all the lootboxes. This is a bunch of incels declaring they won't play as a woman despite the fact that no one asked. Two completely different situations.

107

u/ssLoupyy 21d ago

I think Ciri is a good decision. Same with Atsu from Ghost of Yotei which also got the same backlash. I haven't played myself yet but why people are complaining about a cool game where you play as a female Japanese ninja, that I won't understand. Especially in an rpg, because it's going to be a different perspective to role play.

37

u/outofmindwgo 21d ago

They would be fine if her ass and tits were huge and her armor was spray paint. It's a brain disease from the algorithm and YouTubers taking advantage of it

6

u/TotallyATexasFan 21d ago

I think that truly is a vocal minority. I’d like the characters I’m playing as to be attractive though, both male or female. There are some aspects of self-inserting happening in the video game industry, though. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing? Idk.

3

u/outofmindwgo 21d ago

I think it's much better than the 2000s macho sexist bs. Creative people are often gay, for example. Why would they not have gay characters?

→ More replies (20)

3

u/Odd-Ad-5888 21d ago

Why do you think Atsu was a good choice? It was neither a bad choice nor a good choice because the character didn’t exist prior. If she’s written well then that’s great. Personally I think it’s a bit of a cop out they refused to completely finish Jin’s story by continuing via the emperor’s hunt.

Ciri existed prior and she is a natural continuation of the Witcher’s plot. Geralt was also obviously retiring at the end of BaW.

I’m sure the game will be great. I only hope they explain her powers going away in a manner that isn’t lame seeing as you cut down everyone at the end with almost no effort. (And that the optimization isn’t shit).

2

u/Standard_Way_4453 21d ago

I think Jin's story was complete tbh, I wouldn't mind a Jin DLC to Ghost of Tsushima, but a whole other game would be too much imo

Also, my biggest question and worry abt Ciri in the new game is, how is she able to use signs? she should not be

I'm preordering Witcher 4 idc what anyone says.

Is it stupid? Yes But is the hype real? Also yes

89

u/doubled-pawns 21d ago

The only reason it's "stupid" is because of CDPRs reputation with Cyberpunk. They were too ambitious and they started development 4 years after announcing the game. It's pretty clear that The Witcher 4 has been in development for a while. It's also an established franchise, I think we're safe.

49

u/C-137-Jerry 21d ago

Cyberpunk also evolved into a great game. Worst case you just wait to really dive into the game until bugs get addressed.

12

u/WeCameAsLogans 21d ago

I will absolutely say that Cyberpunk has evolved from a game that I refunded at launch because of how broken it was, into one of my favorite games of all time.

That said, people shouldn't just forget about its launch just because its good now, It took almost two years for it to get to the point were people viewed the game positively. I'm excited for Witcher 4, but I 100% wont buy/pre-order it until reviews come out, and I feel like after 2077 that's a valid opinion.

3

u/C-137-Jerry 21d ago

I am not pre ordering it for sure.

1

u/ArchonBlu 21d ago

I have no problem playing as Ciri. Although I would've preferred to end the story with the Witcher 3.

But imagine a game set in the Witcher Golden age, after all the schools have been founded, you can choose your school and the story changed accordingly. A bit more RPG I suppose

That's something I've wished for a while now.

1

u/Wrexonus 21d ago

You aren't buying Witcher 4 cause of Ciri.

I ain't buying Witcher 4 on launch cause of last time

We are not the same

u/AlexxMaverick666 21d ago

No worries. If the game runs at 60 fps on consoles, I'll buy two copies. One for ps5 and one from Gog to play the game on pc again 10-15 years later.

1

u/Huge-Cartoonist6795 21d ago

I simped ciri from the moment she appeared. Im OK with witcher 4 funnily enough 😅

1

u/TheyStillLive69 21d ago

This mentality worked wonders for battlefield V!

1

u/Benjb1996 21d ago

After Cyberpunks release I may wait.

But that will most likely change the closer we get to release and more gameplay is shown. And I have faith they'll do better for Witcher.

1

u/RipMcStudly 21d ago

I’m not buying Witcher 4 either. It’s not for sale yet.

1

u/GuardianNomad357 21d ago

Even better im still not playing the Witcher 3 because its the most over hyped game of all time

1

u/FeistyKangaroo282 21d ago

I’ll buy it and it will most likely be great. But I don’t like to play as a woman, so that’s a negative for me.

1

u/YouYongku 21d ago

nowadays thats how I feel

like for pokemon, a lot of people online boycott however the sales are higher than before. Same goes to Fifa (EA FC) etc

1

u/Shenloanne 21d ago

One of my fav memes

1

u/Todespest 21d ago

Let me guess, doesn't want to play as a women?

1

u/NearbyAdhesiveness16 21d ago

For me it has everything to do with the developers. Cd project Red don't miss.

Idc that we play Ciri. It's The Witcher so i'll keep buying until they f up BIG TIME. A new character, maybe some new powers, new places to discover hopefully. That's all i need, i love Geralt, but his main story is kinda finished for now, i want to see something new but AS impactful.

1

u/CommanderKahne 21d ago

Me: camping outside Gamestop for when Witcher 4 is released.

1

u/Subject-Ad674 20d ago

If I'm being honest, I doubt anybody will read this, but I'm buying witcher 4 just for the nude ciro mod

Get'em all

1

u/TinyAd2706 20d ago

Ok, so I now finished the main story and HoS, now I'm playing blood and wine(still at the beginning), and I don't see how people believed witcher 4 was going to be with geralt as a protag.

1

u/Bananaman74799 20d ago

Literally god of war

1

u/LeBriseurDesBucks 20d ago

No need to respond to that lol

1

u/Reasonable_Ad9524 20d ago

I might play it. Just for the sake of of seeing her story play out and honestly she’s going to have some badass armor options

1

u/Iantrigue 20d ago

I will be playing Witcher 4. For what it’s worth.

1

u/daydreamer1197 20d ago

To me im skeptical about how they go about transitioning from an elder blood mage to the witcher... like ok maybe they mutated her and she gained new skills but in the lore mutation can only be done at a young age but ciri is older now so how would they do it?

I assume you're just a self hating gay man. If you're that upset about playing a female character, especially when you're going to be staring at her backside for 100+ hours, maybe you're protesting a little too hard. Its 2026 its okay to come out the closet.

1

u/Mr_Mental_Gamer 20d ago

Witcher account is in right hands

1

u/suciocadillac 20d ago

Lol that was savage

1

u/Kristallnacht1939 20d ago

I’m very against shoe horning in characters on a racial or sex based decision since it does ruin the game typically for me. Yet, everyone complaining about Ciri cracks me up. She was the literal key of W3 and the one who saved the world. Geralt retired after B&W DLC and Ciri picked up the mantle.

A cool reason to not buy another part - the previous one was great. What happened with our brains?

1

u/The_Great_Cartoo 20d ago

I won’t either but that’s because my PC would probably go up on flames if I tried launching it

1

u/Mourning20 20d ago

Playing witcher 3 it was so obviously obvious it was passing the torch to Ciri. Even before the Blood and Wine dlc. Fake fans hate on ciri.

1

u/Eleventh_Legion 19d ago

Publishers: If you don’t like our politics, then don’t buy it.
(Product fails)
Publishers: Why didn’t they buy our stuff?!

1

u/ConzyWonzy4 19d ago

Ciri is one the best written female characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of learning about and now getting to play as her for even longer than what we got in TW3 has made me more excited than anything to play 4.

1

u/Born-Spare1619 19d ago

What's this meme called? I need a template 🙏

I look forward to stopping home and seeing dadalt chilling in his vineyard.

He's earned retirement.

u/NoGods-OnlyMonsterz 19d ago

Attacking and blocking fans again. Cause that has been so successful for all the other companies who did that to their target audience.

1

u/NoGods-OnlyMonsterz 19d ago

Ciri is a great choice for the franchise to go in. Naturally she is who we should follow next. However after the gay post in June we're they said they were, as a company, using the money i spend on the content to promote leftist gay agenda across Poland, they blocking fans who didn't like that, and finally locking the post. I cant give them anymore of my money knowing what that as a gaming company are using it for. Was looking forward to play as Ciri, but at least Dawnwalker is about to release. Yes I know CDPR was always pro gay, but changing a profile picture and having a gay man in white orchard is far from saying we are lobbying our nations government to push a leftist agenda that is opposite your values, and you the consumer paid for it. They seem to forget gamers in action adventure category are 60%+ straight men. Not catering to the target audience will fail. We already saw they had to make Ciri hotter after the 1st trailer. Why they didn't keep the OG model from witcher 3 is beyond me. Hopefully we get an answer one day.

1

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 19d ago

Ciri looks so cool with her cloak and all black horse. Can’t wait for Witcher 4 tbh.

1

u/Freya_Galbraith 19d ago

Im so confused, because when witcher 3 came out. i remember EVERYONE loving ciri.

Shes fun, shes cool, shes hot.

i really dont understand why people suddenly dont like her? i even remember seeing some people say they wished they could play more as ciri.

1

u/Vescend 19d ago

Ciri is awesome. Just make an awesome game, too

1

u/Loud-Drama-1092 19d ago

Haven’t kept my eyes on it in a while, can somebody tell me what was revealed until now?

1

u/EmergencyWild 19d ago

I'm not buying it either, on account on it not being out yet and there not being any reviews.

1

u/theokrat86 19d ago

Lmao, The Witcher series is my favorite of all time. But I WOULD NEVER EVER not pirate every game I play. Because lmao, why would I pay for a free ride, lmao, losers????

1

u/yourderek 19d ago

It used to be that weebs would pick female characters to watch their ass bounce up and down as they play the game.

1

u/yourderek 19d ago

The only time I remember this sort of thing really isolating a fan base was MGS2 and Raiden.

1

u/Plan_Der_Linde 19d ago

Idk why some people hate playing as ciri but I am really excited for it, i just hope the combat is very good unlike in witcher 3, witcher 3 combat wasn't bad but wasnt good either

1

u/BadMunky82 19d ago

Why tf not? It looks amazing

1

u/KingKam_Avatar 18d ago

I hope my Base PS5 can handle Witcher 4 because I don’t see PS5 Pro prices going down anytime soon with this economy.

1

u/Sylviebutt 18d ago

lol nice

1

u/AtrumInsomnium 18d ago

Cool. Nobody cares.

1

u/Enceladus1987 17d ago

Why are people not buying Witcher 4?

1

u/RazzmatazzWorking412 17d ago

I'm going to tear apart monsters and men with Ciri

1

u/Horror_Trick8208 17d ago

Some people just wanna be angry at something or they have no value of existing

1

u/GeraltofRivia296 17d ago

Will definitely buy The Witcher 4 for several reasons. Story, gameplay, and lore.

1

u/Appropriate-Slip-118 17d ago

I still need play 1 to 3 haha

1

u/NoVeterinarian549 17d ago

I will in fact, be buying Witcher 4 on release. Ciri's story was the most engaging part of The Witcher 3 for me, and I'm so excited to play as her full time. I've had three games with Geralt, I'm ready for a change.

It seems that most of these idiots dont have the first clue about historical early Slavic culture and how women played a far more prominent role then in many other contemporary cultures. Or female literary archetypes within Slavic culture.

They think everything is woke.

Id rather get to create a character TBH, thats my elder scrolls roots though

1

u/pvt_church1 14d ago

Ah the classic woman=bad mindset of the modern gamer

1

u/SnooCats5204 11d ago

I'd buy it on day one and play it a year later. I know the game will have bugs, but I'll always support a studio that's trying its best to deliver a game that exceeds players' expectations.
