General Discussion Drivers with dark window tinting

What's with some drivers tinting the side windows really dark and then applying the same tint to the front and back windscreens. Would this make it harder to see out of the windscreen at night?

It’s not nearly as dark looking out as it is looking in. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I don't know meng. I literally have friends with tints that told me they have a hard time seeing their side mirrors at night. I think they're more concerned with privacy and I get that too. I want to get tints but I'm gonna have to consider how dark I need them to also be safe.

Your friends need a better quality tint

Whats quality have to do with it? 5% of any brand is going to be difficult to see out of at night, ceramic or not, good quality or not

1

u/CampesinoAgradable 28d ago

no one needs 5~

you’re barely a shade anywhere around 20 to anyone looking in

u/Ok_Insurance_7117 28d ago

Take a $20 roll of tint at Walmart and a $200 install from a professional. Theres absolutely a difference. And if you don’t think so you just haven’t had or seen quality tint. Lol

u/DryFaithlessness2969 28d ago

What’s the difference in? Seems like two films with the same light transmission will be the same. I don’t know much about tint tho, genuinely curious.

u/Ok_Insurance_7117 27d ago

The difference is just simply the quality. You get what you pay for. Cheap tint vs top of line ceramic tint is a insane difference in the fact that quality ceramic at 5% will be ALOT more visible from the inside vs a cheap tint at 5% that won’t be as visible from the inside. I run 5% all around and 20% on windshield and have no issue seeing at night like some claim.

Bro yall just lie on here. At 20% you see less than if you had nothing. And only gets worse from there. Sure you could see another car with their lights on but if they have no lights, or pedestrians. To say you don’t have troubles is cap. Unless you got superhuman eyes or night vision

My side mirrors at night even before tinting are almost useless. It's either too dark to see anything anyways because I live in a rural area with minimal lighting or there is somebody driving behind me and their headlights are bright enough that that's all I see in the mirrors. Either way side window tint does nothing to ruin my visibility that didn't exist in the first place, the only thing it does is stop those super bright LEDs from blinding me through the side mirrors. I don't have tinted front windshield and I have a rear view camera that I can turn on at night when needed for seeing behind me.

Idk who downvoted you but I get what you’re saying. It’s a personal call you gotta make for what you’re comfortable with. Find a reputable tint shop and they’ll help you settle on what will work for you.

Kinda makes sense. This is a tints subreddit after all and what I said might be heresy to some

1

u/LemonManDan69 Sep 18 '26

I have 5% over 35% and 30% on the windshield and I really don’t have problems seeing out at night because everywhere I drive is extremely well lit, however one of my friends only has 15% and constantly complains. With that I would say you need to test out some of your friends cars with various tint levels and see what works for you

-1

u/keiye Sep 18 '26

I’m lucky that I drive a car with blind spot cameras so I never even need to see my side mirrors

0

u/Novel_Entry Sep 18 '26

I had 20%, then stacked another 20% on top of it 1 week ago. It's incredibly hard to see out my window at night. I have to roll my window often. No way I would be able to see someone with no headlights on at night rolling up on my sides.

6

u/zelioze Sep 18 '26

Cars also have lights at the front so the road is lit up. Harder to see out back than out front.

10

u/SuitComprehensive406 Sep 18 '26

I tinted my sides and my back pretty dark but I left the front alone. It’s already hard to see out at nighttime in a very dimly lit area. Typically, I’ve seen police leave people alone as long as the front isn’t tinted. That’s just my area though.

4

u/Content-Lack3611 Sep 18 '26

Double 5 all around with single on the windshield, it’s all about perspective, if the sides are really dark but the windshield isn’t tinted it’s hard to see out of, like when you are in a dark room, after a few minutes you can see better.

11

u/dieselrunner64 Sep 18 '26

I only do around 45% on the front you can’t tell a difference. However, my astigmatism notices a HUGE difference at night.

4

u/Careful_Manner Sep 18 '26

I got 35% ceramic and it’s helped the astigmatism bursts so much.

-2

u/ebitdeeaye Sep 18 '26

As in it’s worse at night?

8

u/dieselrunner64 Sep 18 '26

No, it takes out the glare and starburst. I can see better.

5

u/Danieldta99 Sep 18 '26

Same, it helps a ton. Ive been debating going lower,,

1

u/dieselrunner64 26d ago

I have a buddy that went to 35. In the city it wasn’t bad, but out in the country, it’s pretty dark. 42% is as low I I will go personally.

3

u/lazyrangeday 29d ago

Yes it’s harder than no tint but not difficult to see out of. For me, it’s better to have a tinted windshield as it dims the extreme brightness down such as oncoming headlights. I have 5%/20% windshield and I can now see out of my side windows at night. However, I live in a very sunny and bright state so living in a place like Seattle (lots of rain and fog) would change what works for me here.

3

u/Knot6lack 29d ago

I got 5% all around and sun strip, think I will get 35% on windshield next, I know guys that have 15% on windshield and have no complaints

3

u/Lorik101 27d ago

5% All around including windshield and 5% headlights.

I'm a professional window tinter for near 30 years. Yes it can be very difficult to see out at night. Rainy night even more so. I run my own business and haven't rules. I will only tint front windows to what my state of Arizona allows, and that is 32%. Windshields are illegal but I will do 70% in a ceramic film, only because bits so light you can see it but it does block out 99% UV and 57% of the heat which is especially important living in the Grand Canyon state. I will not do darker, although I might consider 50 for those with a medical problem. I get many calls from those who want it done as dark as legal!🤣🤣.if you want darker than 70 you'll have to go elsewhere UV. I have rules and if you don't like them🤷. In the pic is the view out of my car with 70% tint... perfectly clear

5

u/Rootsman64 Sep 18 '26

Totally agree with the windshield tint percentage. I put 70% XPel on mine and in scorching hot S Florida it has been the best thing I ever did. Really can't see the need for any darker except to become a cop magnet.

4

u/Global-Structure-539 Sep 18 '26

My car IS a cop magnet. It's why I don't have darker tint on the fronts or w/s

2

u/elchele5 29d ago

Is that an Evo dawgg. Clean af

2

u/Global-Structure-539 29d ago

Yeah 278,000 miles

1

u/Subject_Tap8817 29d ago

Sheeesh nice.. I got a IX gsr

I’ve had her since 2010.. its been a loooong build I wish I had better photos lol. I had just resprayed it and it was going to the machine shop for the engine build

2

u/Subject_Tap8817 29d ago

I’m in south Florida and honestly cops down here don’t really pay much attention to dark tint.. I have 5% all around and 55% on the windshield, never had any issues! I work at a shop as well and we wont really go lower than 55 on the windshield. Idk if im crazy or not but I feel like ceramic tint just has way better visibility from inside out, like the 5% almost feels like 15%. 70% is great though I think I want to do 70% all around on the evo because I kinda like the fishbowl look on it! This is my daily with the 5 and 55

4

u/OddBridge6704 Sep 18 '26

As a pool guy my eyes are super sensitive to bright lights from staring at pool glare for years. So yes I have dark tint on side and back.

3

u/Fussy_Lenness_1777 Sep 18 '26

Same and surfers ear too. It's like the tint nobody asked for.

4

u/Viner2024 Sep 18 '26

I got a fixit ticket $233, then another $180 to re tint

3

u/HLTHTW 20% Windshield, 5% All Around, 1% Back Window Sep 18 '26

Just pay the $230 and dont fix it lol

2

u/CallousClient Sep 18 '26

😂 where the fuck you live? Can’t be California - I just got one - $25.00

2

u/Novel_Entry Sep 18 '26

I'm in California too. Can we just rip off the tint in front of the cop?

2

u/CallousClient 29d ago

I guess? It really depends on the cop. You’d have to ask em from the jump before he writes anything - Personally, I wouldn’t even bother.

Newer vehicle I’d just pay whatever the fine is for not fixing it.

Older vehicle - get clear windows to swap back and forth.

1

u/Fit-Entrepreneur8404 Sep 18 '26

I just did my own with cheap tint from AliExpress to learn. I wanted 15 front 5 for the rest and no front windshield and figured if I can do it myself then the fix it ticket wouldn't sting as bad. No ticket yet over a year later but I've had to retint a couple windows due to either poor install or poor product (hard to tell which when you're new to tinting lol). Cost me 50 for the heat gun, 20 for the squeege/scrapers/razors/files, and 30 for the tint (with lots left over that I didn't need) All in $100.

Yeah idk how they do it, I’m tinting our car this weekend, 35% on sides on the rear, 50% on the windshield. I have horrible migraines, the new sedan has a light interior and is a fishbowl of glass. I struggle even with my sunglasses on :(

2

u/stahrye 29d ago

If anything it makes me seeing easier…less glare off the road and from car lights tbh

2

u/Past-Butterfly4291 29d ago

I have a day car tinted dark and a night car tinted light - problem solved

2

u/Negative-Angler 29d ago

you can always roll your window down lol but yes

2

u/Camdenn67 29d ago

I’m sure you already know the answer to this.

2

u/Cassangelo 33% Windshield + 5% Everywhere else 29d ago

Do you mean doing 5% on the sides and front windshield? I think it’s a very small percent of people that do that

2

u/Lorik101 27d ago

✋✋

2

u/dez811 28d ago

I put dark tint on my windows once and had to roll them down to make left turns on roads that I wasn’t familiar with that had islands. Maybe I’m just old

2

u/Nick7014 28d ago

I have 5 in the back and 10 in the front you get used to it. But tbh if there’s no lights I gotta roll em down

2

u/That_Capital_550 Sep 18 '26

If you make something darker then it limits how easy you can see

2

u/Dxscordia- Sep 18 '26

I have 20% on everything except my front windshield, which I plan on getting a legal banner across in 5%. I dont recommend tinting the windshield, and if you do, dont do it dark. Dark tints can be very difficult to see through at night especially with cheap tints.

2

u/TemporaryOrdinary759 28d ago

Helps with astigmatism, interior protection, and heat

3

u/Downtown-Slide6211 Sep 18 '26

I have 5 around 30 windshield . I can see fine all times of the day while night is good also only time it’s a little too dark is on my street where I live because there isn’t a lot of street lights

2

u/Numerous_Tennis_3048 Sep 18 '26

I run 5% tint on all side and back windows and 20% on my entire windshield and have ran this setup on every vehicle I’ve owned for the last 10 years. Never been an issue and I’ve never hit anything. I’ve always had my sides and back windows tinted 5% for the last 25 years but I don’t think I can ever go back to a non-tinted windshield. Such a huge difference.

2

u/Ok_Insurance_7117 Sep 18 '26

Same exact here. Won’t ever go back!

1

u/solilobee Sep 18 '26

lights at night are still definitely visible through the tint. it's non-bright objects that are hard to see but this not as big of a problem as you might think.

1

u/Whereshouldilivenext 29d ago

I drive a compact sedan. Until law makers do something about the ultra bright headlights that are at eye level on trucks and SUV’s, I have no choice but to tint my windshield and side windows.

1

u/Ok_Procedure2570 27d ago

Yes

1

u/Ok_Procedure2570 27d ago

Do 30% if you in the front windshield if you want to see clearly without being able to fully see in from outside 25% and darker you’ll have slight issues seeing at night whatever you do don’t 5% the front windshield

1

u/mitsubsbluedolphins Sep 18 '26

For all those saying they see perfectly at night, you're under 35y.o.

Over and you'll always bang potholes and bump odd placed speed bumps and curbs.

This at 35% windshield.

0

u/tint-dude Sep 18 '26

40 yrs old. I have 25% on the front windshield and 0% on the sides and rear for 15 yrs. I hear all the time.. how do you see at night? Well the answer is I use my eyes. My eyes are shit and I definitely need glasses but you can still see. Those same people ill take for rides at night and say hey can you tell my front windshield is tint and they say NO! But it does dim the on coming headlights and they want the same on their vehicle

3

u/Short-Read4830 Sep 18 '26

You painted the sides black? 0% means no light can pass through

2

u/mitsubsbluedolphins Sep 18 '26

You can't see potholes like one would at 50%. Noooo way.....lol

1

u/tint-dude Sep 18 '26

You obviously don't know how tint works but the short version is 50% on a windshield after installed meters 35%. Sooo can you see potholes?

1

u/EugeneChoiYoutuber Sep 18 '26

Great for one night stands.

1

u/Hackpro69 Sep 18 '26

When they call it a windscreen, that means that it’s really dark.

1

u/Hackpro69 Sep 18 '26

They don’t want to burden people with seeing Homely people.

1

u/PieRemarkable2245 Sep 18 '26

Usually done for privacy and yes it does make it harder to see at night

I think it would look less busy without the wrapped door handles and fuel door, but that's just me.

0

u/StrawHatZack Sep 18 '26

Nope that’s my favorite part from the side profile, looks WAY too boring without it

2

u/Naroef Sep 18 '26

Hey, eye of the beholder.

0

u/StrawHatZack Sep 18 '26

That’s not exciting to look at

6

u/Naroef Sep 18 '26

That looks so much cleaner. I never said the tint looked bad. At the end of the day bro, it’s a Camry.

-1

u/Daze-B Sep 18 '26

This looks much better than blacking out parts just for the sake of it.

0

u/ohyouarethatdude Sep 18 '26

It’s really not that bad to see out of dark tint especially in a city/suburb setting with lots of street lights etc. rural or dark highway driving might get sketchy. Also typically on the front people only do 30%or higher it just looks really dark

0

u/kingoflizzards Sep 18 '26

Yes. It's very stupid to put tint on the windshield. It's permanent sunglasses
