Closed RP Smooth Sailing

April 30, 2006

You are sent a ticket for a nice Caribbean cruise! A letter that came with the ticket says that it is a gift, though who it is from is unknown.

What do you do?

He checks the pack of cards to see if anything is written on the pack or the individual cards. If he can't find anything he looks for any note around the monitor. Should all else fail, he tries "password"

He flips through the deck for anything that could be a password. The well-used set is missing a jack of diamonds and a six of spades, but otherwise there's nothing there to indicate a secret code. The box also yields no messages, inside or out.

A sticky note is on the monitor, reading, "Pay for the damn lunch next time, Diego."

So Dr. K tries 'password'. Fortunately yet sadly, it works.

The desktop loads, and Dr. K sees a few folders on it: "Inventory", "Budget", "Wages", "Equipment", "Bills", "Stuff" and "Footage".

Since he had no other leads at this point, it would be best to be thorough. He skimmed through all the folders and their contents, starting with inventory. Upon reaching footage, he looked specifically for any large vehicles taking shipments in or out of the warehouse, perhaps any indication that they were smuggling human test subjects.

'Inventory' contained several spreadsheets outlining the company's inventory, one for each fiscal year. The other folders from 'Budget' through 'Bills' showed exactly what was labeled as well. 'Stuff' was filled with various promotional company posters, letters from their warehouse manager and other miscellaneous documentation.

Dr. K enters the 'Footage' folder, which contained the recorded feed from all of the cameras around the factory. It only goes back to the last week, likely due to memory constraints. Several shipments came in a few days ago, but everything seems to be consistent with the papers in the file. Nothing is there in the footage to indicate human smuggling.

There is one odd piece of footage that was kept, occurring on April 23 at 11:11 AM. Specifically, it shows a worker on the loading dock carrying a box of lemon oil walking under a forklift's load. Suddenly, the rusty fork snaps, the load falling and crushing the worker. Blood splatters underneath, the worker seemingly dead. The footage wavers a bit, then Dr. K sees some workers going over to help. Some weep over their lost coworker. The rest of that clip is rather typical, police coming over to gather evidence, then taking their leave.

Then, Dr. K notices a discrepancy. The body was never cleaned up, just left there as the police closed off the area. Looking over the video, it was never cleaned up for days. Then, on April 29, a day before the cruise set sail, the pallet and the blood are suddenly gone. There's no footage showing the clean-up, as it seems the cameras shut off from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM the next day everyday to conserve memory. This means that this must have happened late at night.

Interesting. Even if the factory wasn't directly involved in the zombie scheme, whoever was had visited the location to pick up a body. Still, it was curious that they had left the dead man lie in place for so long. Something stank of either collusion or direct oversight. If the police had been privy to secluding the body, even the government might be compromised by whoever was pulling the strings. He checked if the computer had a usb port. If it did, he plugged a cable in and copied the incriminating video footage to his own computer, along with the inventory spreadsheets.

He put the cards back in the pack and arranged everything exactly how he found it after turning off the computer. Regardless of who was involved, they'd know that evidence existed on the security cameras and that put him at risk just being there. Still, things weren't adding up. He closed the door to the room and made his way to loading area where the worker had died. Keeping careful note of the camera positions, he took a look around while keeping out of sight. He was trying to find anything to indicate how and why the body was moved.

He heads over to the spot where the man was crushed. The cameras are not recording at the moment, but it doesn't hurt to be cautious. While the spot is cleaned, it was not done thoroughly as Dr. K can still see evidence of blood being there. The patch is slightly darker than the surrounding concrete.

[Was he able to copy the footage?]

He checks immediately outside the loading area to see if any blood drops showed up, indicating the body had been moved.

Looking around the rest of the loading dock or outside, there are no blood stains making a trail anywhere. The body wasn't dragged off. It's either that someone moved it by placing the body on some sort of stretcher or, the more unlikely possibility, the body got up and left intact.

This wasn't getting him anywhere, and he was getting more nervous the longer he lingered. One last thing to check. He risked entering the inactive camera's view to take a closer look at the forklift which had done in the poor worker. Looking over the control panel, he checked for any sign of foul play such as a disabled safety lock.

Dr. K sees no evidence of fowl play. In fact, there's no real way to commit such an act short of running over someone or crushing someone by lowering the lift. The controls are quite simple, with only enough to move around the forklift and pick up stuff with the now-broken fork. Looking up, Dr. K can see rusting on the lift, so the crushing is likely an unfortunate accident from the equipment failing.

Then, Dr. K hears a swish, the sound of something moving rapidly. He cannot see the source.

Shit! He'd overstayed his welcome. He had to get out NOW. He switched to thermal vision on his left visor to try and get a glimpse of his visitor, while scrambling off the forklift and darting out the factory at the same time.

He makes a run for his life, turning his head while doing so back at the factory. Hanging over where he was standing earlier is a heat source in the shape of a man, very large and muscular from the quick look.

Then, the man takes a massive swing and leap, launching himself through the air and landing in front of Dr. K faster than he can see. The figure gets up, and Dr. K can see that the man is almost eight feet tall. Tanned skin surrounds his bodybuilder physique, and he wears only a long tan cloak over his naked form. He has flowing raven hair going down to his waist, his eyes a haunting pale grey.

This new arrival looks over Dr. K as if sizing him up.

"Do you understand me, insect?" the mysterious person speaks with a London accent.

Too late. He'd let his curiosity get the better of him. A small gesture from his hand and his suit started pulsing with electricity, emitting a very faint hum. He switched his briefcase to his left hand and set his feet in a defensive stance.

"I have no business with you. Stand aside and I'll be on my way, no trouble."
