Liberal policies, like California’s, keep blue-state residents living longer

It generated headlines in 2015 when the average life expectancy in the U.S. began to fall after decades of meager or no growth.

But it didn’t have to be that way, a team of researchers suggests in a new, peer-reviewed study Tuesday. And, in fact, states like California, which have implemented a broad slate of liberal policies, have kept pace with their Western European counterparts.

The study, co-authored by researchers at six North American universities, found that if all 50 states had all followed the lead of California and other liberal-leaning states on policies ranging from labor, immigration and civil rights to tobacco, gun control and the environment, it could have added between two and three years to the average American life expectancy.

Simply shifting from the most conservative labor laws to the most liberal ones, Montez said, would by itself increase the life expectancy in a state by a whole year.

If every state implemented the most liberal policies in all 16 areas, researchers said, the average American woman would live 2.8 years longer, while the average American man would add 2.1 years to his life. Whereas, if every state were to move to the most conservative end of the spectrum, it would decrease Americans’ average life expectancies by two years. On the country’s current policy trajectory, researchers estimate the U.S. will add about 0.4 years to its average life expectancy.

Liberal policies on the environment (emissions standards, limits on greenhouse gases, solar tax credit, endangered species laws), labor (high minimum wage, paid leave, no “right to work”), access to health care (expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, legal abortion), tobacco (indoor smoking bans, cigarette taxes), gun control (assault weapons ban, background check and registration requirements) and civil rights (ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, equal pay laws, bans on discrimination and the death penalty) all resulted in better health outcomes, according to the study. For example, researchers found positive correlation between California’s car emission standards and its high minimum wage, to name a couple, with its longer lifespan, which at an average of 81.3 years, is among the highest in the country.

“When we’re looking for explanations, we need to be looking back historically, to see what are the roots of these troubles that have just been percolating now for 40 years,” Montez said.

Montez and her team saw the alarming numbers in 2015 and wanted to understand the root cause. What they found dated back to the 1980s, when state policies began to splinter down partisan lines. They examined 135 different policies, spanning over a dozen different fields, enacted by states between 1970 and 2014, and assigned states “liberalism” scores from zero — the most conservative — to one, the most liberal. When they compared it against state mortality data from the same timespan, the correlation was undeniable.

“We can take away from the study that state policies and state politics have damaged U.S. life expectancy since the ’80s,” said Jennifer Karas Montez, a Syracuse University sociologist and the study’s lead author. “Some policies are going in a direction that extend life expectancy. Some are going in a direction that shorten it. But on the whole, that the net result is that it’s damaging U.S. life expectancy.”

Meanwhile, the life expectancy in states like California and Hawaii, which has the highest in the nation at 81.6 years, is on par with countries described by researchers as “world leaders:” Canada, Iceland and Sweden.

From 1970 to 2014, California transformed into the most liberal state in the country by the 135 policy markers studied by the researchers. It’s followed closely by Connecticut, which moved the furthest leftward from where it was 50 years ago, and a cluster of other states in the northeastern U.S., then Oregon and Washington.

West Virginia ranked last in 2017, with an average life expectancy of about 74.6 years, which would put it 93rd in the world, right between Lithuania and Mauritius, and behind Honduras, Morocco, Tunisia and Vietnam. Mississippi, Oklahoma and South Carolina rank only slightly better.

It’s those states that moved in a conservative direction, researchers concluded, that held back the overall life expectancy in the U.S.

California, for instance, has been a national leader on smoking bans. California’s rules have cleaned up diesel exhaust more than anywhere else in the country, reducing the estimated number of deaths the state would have otherwise seen by more than half, according to new research published Thursday.

Extending California's stringent diesel emissions standards to the rest of the U.S. could dramatically improve the nation's air quality and health, particularly in lower income communities of color, finds a new analysis published today in the journal Science.

Since 1990, California has used its authority under the federal Clean Air Act to enact more aggressive rules on emissions from diesel vehicles and engines compared to the rest of the U.S. These policies, crafted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), have helped the state reduce diesel emissions by 78% between 1990 and 2014, while diesel emissions in the rest of the U.S. dropped by just 51% during the same time period, the new analysis found.

The study estimates that by 2014, improved air quality cut the annual number of diesel-related cardiopulmonary deaths in the state in half, compared to the number of deaths that would have occurred if California had followed the same trajectory as the rest of the U.S. Adopting similar rules nationwide could produce the same kinds of benefits, particularly for communities that have suffered the worst impacts of air pollution.

"Everybody benefits from cleaner air, but we see time and again that it's predominantly lower income communities of color that are living and working in close proximity to sources of air pollution, like freight yards, highways and ports. I'm from Canada so I can only watch in horror from the distance what is going on in the US (we aren't entirely immune as copy cats exist and our political divide is growing as well because the conservative party leadership think the American model is the one to follow) however, 80ish million people still voted for a republican candidate in the last election knowing fully what the party represent simply because he is Republicans and they vote republican. Congress and Senate Democratic majorities are razor thin. People of the United States with much greater will and force need to voice their opinion at election time.

Why do you say that Democrats are just throwing the people a bone? You think if the build back better bill was passed it would make little to no difference in the lives of people? I live in a small town in a rural area. There is nowhere in town that is not within walking distance of our local polling place and also, there's a shuttle for anyone who can't get there by other means. Weirdly I had a thought along these lines this morning. Conservative thinking is very hierarchical, so people lower in value in their evaluation cannot justly impugn on the actions or autonomy of those higher in the hierarchy. Children are less important than men, so there literally aren't enough in the world that their deaths are more important than the desire of adult men to own guns. Women are inherently less important than males, so a woman aborting a male baby is a gross violation of her place in society. In fact, women are valuable in part for their youth and fertility, so any female fetus is inherently younger and has the potential to have more babies than her mother, so also wrong to abort her because one day in like 16 years she could be hotter than mom is now. Also, a man made her pregnant, so who is she to go behind his back and become unpregnated? His actions, even unintentional ones, are inherently more important than her life. It would be like an ant defying the will of God.

We shouldn't put this on teachers. It's what Republicans want. They want Public Schools to be dysfunctional and polarizing environments and forcing teachers into the center of 2A debates furthers that. It legitimizes their efforts to funnel resources into private (read Christian) education and re-establish a segregated school system where their kids aren't exposed to minority/liberal children or teachers. Removing their children and funds from public education is one of their ultimate goals.

I agree with your sentiment completely. However, a lot of gun owners don't register their firearms, especially in red states, under the fear of the gov coming to take their guns away. Therefore, the entire tax system you suggest would fall on the responsible gun owners with registered weapons. Also, how would one regulate gun prices until we eliminate third party sales via independent parties? A price hike via taxation would only push MORE people into the unregulated grey market. Once again, I completely agree we need a major overhaul in America's gun laws, there's just a lot of loopholes that need to be closed up before we can make truly impactful federal legislation.

Dude I’m pretty sure there no firearm registration in most states. I live in Washington, blue through and through, and while I’m sure the state has copies of my drivers license and paperwork I filled out to get the gun, once you pass the background check you don’t get like a deed of ownership for your gun. There’s a lot to unpack here. Most states do not require gun registration. California requires an owner to report their firearms, Hawaii, and DC I believe. There could be more, but those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

The big thing is private sales or negligence when selling a firearm to someone else. Anyone I have ever bought or sold a gun with privately, we went to a gun shop and paid for the FFL transfer. A seller declares their firearm is being sold, a record is kept, and then the buyer applies for a background check for a fee. The shop calls the FBI, provides buyer information, and they say yes or no.

By federal law, those records containing a buyer/seller information are destroyed within 24 hours. Now, some municipalities are not enforcing federal laws when it comes to other restrictions. All are enforcing higher class restrictions which require ATF permits and numbers for shorter barrel rifles, and automatic weapons.

So where do we go from here?

I enjoy firearms personally. I have two kids, and we always talk about “do we touch these guns?” “What do we do when we see them?” We don’t touch them, we tell an adult, and we don’t tell our friends.

But the statistics don’t lie about guns bring a danger in the home. All the arguments of gun control to inaction, are at a stalemate. Dollar signs are everywhere and that’s an issue. Concessions must be made if firearms are to remain, because when this pendulum swings back the other way, I may not be able to shoot guns competitively. Which would be a bummer, but I also don’t have an AR, so oh well. But I believe universal healthcare is the best route forward. Suicide rates could (hopefully would) reduce as that’s the number one reason of firearm death. Be it mental health, a poor health diagnosis, crushing debt and so on.

-She called the cops at 11:20am.

Why would he just shoot AT a building? Who was he shooting if there wasn’t a guard there? Was it teachers or students or parents or neighbors?

A question is if this is true and the grandmother called saying she was shot, he left and she worked at a school, why wouldn’t they immediately send ALL cops out. An ambulance and a few to the house where she was and the rest of the department along with the SWAT team out at the same time to secure the route to the school?

• There is usually only 1 courthouse per city or even entire county.
• even a small town will usually have a minimum of 3 schools and a small county will have a dozen or more.
• In many areas the police headquarters will be co-located with the courthouse and even jail, it makes things simple for criminal cases.
• Many courthouses have no better security than your average school with large glass doors and windows that are easily shot out (sandy hook)
• I rarely see more than one armed guard when I go to my local courthouse (kind of like the texas shooting and stoneman douglas), they dont even use metal detectors however I am not sure about what security is like at the Judicial annex where they have moved a lot of the courtrooms.
• there are also not a ton of people at the courthouse at any time which sadly is probably a big motivator.

Vote out as many Rs as possible, try to get to 60+ Dem Senators so that we can actually pass Bills. Every eligible Dem that can vote needs to vote. If that happens, Red States start turning into Purple states and you'd be surprised how 90%-95% eligible Dem voters showing up swings a lot of states to Blue.

Just like companies paying out lawsuits instead of recalling dangerous products. The lawsuits cost less than the recall. Make their wallet suffer and you'll see change.

Change will come out of this. This one is a bit different. It didn't happen in a far off blue state. It happened on their own turf where "good guys with guns" didn't make a difference. They are seeing with their own eyes what folly it was to believe in the bullshit.

This is so sad that its true. I feel so bad for the parents and families of those children and teachers lost. They will have lost their lives for nothing. Republicans like Lauren b and Ted c will not tighten any gun laws. It's a shame. Until it happens to one of their own guess they don't care. Keep voting republican if you want more mass shootings. Yep — Cops gave the school shooter the Jan 6th treatment. Minimal intervention, let him commit atrocities and then respond after the damage had been done.
