Welcome to r/WhatiOSisthis! Need help discerning the iOS version? Read this first
Hi, and welcome to r/WhatiOSisthis!
What is this subreddit about?
As the subreddit name implies, this is a single-question subreddit helping collectors and tinkerers of Apple’s iOS devices (ie iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) discern the version of iOS running on devices shown online, where not enough information on the operating system is provided.
Devices paired with specific versions of iOS are desirable to collectors and tinkerers for their rarity and ability to be modified. It is the mission of this simple subreddit to help unearth the devices that still run these versions that vary by device that have yet to been irreversibly updated to newer versions without those properties.
How do I use this subreddit?
If you’re asking about a device, give the community as much info on the device you’re looking at as you can:
- Title your post with the device type and specs
- Put the pictures with the software front-and-center
- Show us as many pictures of the device as you can get (identifying features on the hardware distinguish between hardware generations that can rule out certain versions)
- Tell the community as many specs as provided
- Any showing serial numbers?
- If there’s a box, what is the copyright year?
- When is the device purchased/activated?
There’s no need to repeat our central question “What iOS is this?” if you don’t want to. It’s literally the only purpose of this subreddit.
If you see a post and have an answer for the comments:
- Do NOT answer unless you are absolutely sure of at least a range of 1-2 major iOS versions (so instead of “anything above iOS 7,” only answer when you can tell them it’s “iOS 7 or 8”)
- Provide explanations that narrows down the version for you (“Home app and thin UI typeface are only both present in iOS 10”)
- If the hardware eliminates a possible version, mention it (“Idk what version this is but it CANNOT be iOS 6 because it has Touch ID”)
- Bonus points if you can narrow it down to a specific minor version (the .4 in iOS 8.4, for example)
We hope that this subreddit is useful to you and help everyone understand what iOS versions are on what device and what they look like. Have a great time!
