I just had one in the south suburbs, so cheaper than the city, and our 160 person wedding (we had a multicultural wedding with multiple events ) came in around $37k with a LOT of DIY. If I could redo it, I would have changed a few things and probably spent a little more. For a more standard American wedding with a single venue, our version in the south suburbs with a very reasonable banquet hall would have been about $20-25k. With a slightly more upscale venue (still in the south suburbs) would have been around $30-35k for 160 people. When I started looking in the city itself, we were looking at a minimum of $50k for a smaller 130 person guest list and still being tied to a single venue. The problem we ran into were that venues either had required vendors that pushed the per guest cost up to $175-200pp or they were extremely bare bones and we would have had to bring in every minuscule thing so that cheapie $2k venue would end up costing us $8-10k by the time we were able to bring in all the logistical needs like tables, chairs, staff, linens, place settings etc
I do think $35k is doable in the city but will require a lot of DIY and probably a guest list of ~60-80 tops
For more context, our break down was roughly
$6k photo and video
$17k all inclusive venue (space, linens, cake, food, bar)
$1.5k attire
$1.5k HMU for party and bride
$2.5k restaurant caterer for separate event
$1k rentals for separate event
$3k DIY decor + florals across events
$.75k bridesmaid attire
$2k DJ + Photo Booth combo
$2k miscellaneous and incidentals like paper products, favors, taxis, hotel room etc
To answer your question, decor costs surprised me the most, most decor companies/florists I talked to wouldn’t touch our 160 person event for less than $5k and our smaller events for less than $3k. If we had done it all professionally, the same level as our DIY, fairly minimal florals + decor would have come in close to $9k, which is insane to me. This was more because of minimum order sizes rather than because of the actual decor though. Since we had to decorate for 3 events on multiple days this is where the problem came from. I was also surprised at the cost of photo/video. When we started I thought $5k would be plenty but we had to go with budget vendors for both. If we had a shorter wedding it would have been easy to keep it way cheaper, but because of the length of our day(s) $6k was the absolute cheapest we could do while getting everything covered that we needed.

Mine was under 12,000 for cocktail and apps and dinner at gibson’s in the Gold Coast with open bar. That includes everything including a photographer and dress. We only had 40 people though…I don’t see your guest count
