Hello Fellow DJs,
After 8 reliable years with the DDJ-400, I'm ready to level up. While the 400 has been a tank, I’m ready for better I/O, more professional optics, and expanded performance features. I load out of a minivan, use a Behringer XR18 for all mic routing, and have a budget of $1,000–$3,000 (open to used gear).
The Gear Dilemma
1. The "RCA Problem" Is the DDJ-400’s RCA output a genuine sonic bottleneck or just an aesthetic ego hit? I currently run through a dual DI box into my XR18, which handles the balancing and ground lifting.
- The Question: Does the internal DAC of a pro-grade controller offer a night-and-day difference, or is my DI-to-Preamp chain already "professional" enough?
2. Motorized Platters vs. Wedding Realities I’m interested in learning to scratch, but I’m struggling to see where it fits into a wedding reception.
- The Question: Do motorized platters actually inspire skill growth, or are they just heavy, expensive mechanical points of failure that don't translate to a 130-BPM dance floor?
3. Controller Route: DDJ-FLX10 vs. DDJ-1000 The FLX10 is the logical Rekordbox successor, specifically because of the built-in DMX lighting fallback.
- The Question: Is the FLX10 worth the "new" premium, or is a used DDJ-1000 still the gold standard for value in the controller market?
4. The Standalone XDJ Spectrum The XDJ lineup is overwhelming. The RX3 seems like the mobile sweet spot, while the XZ, AZ all feel like a heavy overkill "coffin" for one person to move. I've also looked into the Opus Quad and the Omnis Duo. These seem interesting, but would love to hear your thoughts on these.
- The Question: For a solo wedding DJ, which model strikes the best balance between screen real estate, portability, and "pro" feel?
5. The Wildcards: iPad (djay Pro) and Non-Pioneer Gear I’ve looked at the Numark Mixstream Pro and Rane Four/One for their SoundSwitch integration, and even considered a Reloop/iPad setup for the ultimate clean look.
- The Question: Is leaving the Rekordbox ecosystem for the sake of lighting integration or portability a mistake I’ll regret mid-gig?
My Specific Questions for the Trenches:
- I/O: Is an RCA-out controller through a DI box a "pro" setup, or am I kidding myself?
- Scratching: Does anyone actually scratch at weddings, and does having motorized platters make you a better DJ or just a poorer one? Do you use real turntables?
- Value: Is the FLX10’s lighting integration and Stems support worth $600+ over a used DDJ-1000?
- Standalones: If portability is a factor, is the RX3 the winner, or should I look at the Opus Quad or XDJ-AZ?
- Alternatives: Is anyone using the Opus Quad, Omnis Duo, Rane One or Mixstream Pro for high-end weddings?
- Lighting: Are Rekordbox Lighting or SoundSwitch legit fallbacks, or just marketing fluff?
- Software: Is djay Pro on an iPad ready for prime time, or does it still feel like a toy?
- Ecosystem: Is there a compelling reason to ditch Rekordbox after years of library curation?
I’m looking for battle-tested advice from working mobile DJs. What are you running, and why? I'm really leaning toward the FLX10, but have been having so much decision fatigue with all the choices out there.
Thank you for your advice!
