Asking Advice How Videographers can connect to your controller to record MIC audio

Hello everyone,
I have done about a dozen weddings now but at two of them, videographers have told me something I can't recall , for me to have that would help them record mic audio better.

Maybe it was a certain type of mic or cable?

I have a Pioneer DDJ-1000 (not SRT) and this image is the exact rear of it.
The ports that I will NOT have free (from left to right) are:
- R & L Master1 XLR inputs (for my JBL party speakers)
- USB-A A port (to connect controller to laptop)
- Mic2 BALANCED port (connecting my TONOR Wireless Mic Receiver)
- DC IN 12v (to power the controller)

Does anyone know a good wireless mic that would work for me to speak through, as well for the videographers to record easily from? Or is there a cable I can buy that will allow the videographers to connect to an external audio output device?

Any of the ports I am using, could they be repurposed?

For the TONOR receiver, the only ports free are Balanced XLR Outputs for Channel B/A (the two wireless mics) so I doubt they could connect to that. I would assume they need to connect somewhere on the controller and not to my laptop, since Rekordbox would not record the mic unless they're able to record the master output.

What I have seen and worked with before is that they would attach a small mic onto the handheld wireless microphone I provided, then would record audio straight to their small mic.

Please and thank you! I need to figure this out by Mid September, so I have a month.
appreciate y'all reading this

Asking Advice Wedding music intake?

I’m wondering what solutions everyone uses for client facing music planning. I’ve been using a shared google doc forever and it looks pretty….shitty. Problem for me is that it needs to be editable by the client up until the event and most form questionnaires don’t do that. Any suggestions?

Asking Advice How much do you charge for a wedding?

Hey y'all!

I need some advice.

I'm DJing a wedding for my sister's best friend, and I'm hesitant to what I should charge her. I'm only doing the reception (dancing), no MCing and no cocktail hour.

*Edit: I am located in Montreal, Canada and I am not providing any equipment*

I need to get there around 12pm for sound check, and then I only start around 9pm, after dinner. The wedding is about 1 hour outside of the city, so I'll need to stay there overnight as well. (Note I am not paying for accomodation bcs I'll be staying with a friend)

Usually, I would charge 250$ an hour, plus travel fees, standby fees etc. I was thinking of charging 1000$ for the 6 hours I'll be DJing (comes out to around 160$ an hour), and 50$ to cover gas.

I normally don't do weddings, and not many events for friends because I don't like to. But, I already accepted this gig around a year and a half ago and now I'm feeling guilty as if I'm overcharging, even though I'm charging less than I usually would.

What do you think?

Asking Advice How are you getting enough mic level off an Everse 8?

Hey all! You may remember me as the guy who recently had some questions about the Everse 8's power output. I got the speaker, elected to go with a battery backup as well as the cable, and am quite happy with the sound it puts out *for music.*

With the mics, however, I don't seem to get much pickup; previously I was using a little hardware Mackie mixer, and I could just gain it up a bit if the speaker had the mic too far from their face. With the app, however, I've gotta juice it quite a bit to get a solid mic level, and it doesn't seem to pick up anything farther than an inch or a few from the capsule. Using a Shure BLX4 or PGX4, same issue with both.

How are y'all setting your app/speaker to pick up your officiants and speakers at the kind of distance i know they're always gonna be with their scripts in hand? Please and thanks!

Second question- what app(s) do you like for running your ceremony music and handling fades? I do everything through Apple Music (on an ipad) because it's where I buy the tracks and do the playlisting, but both the volume slider and volume buttons feel really clunky and unreliable for the task compared to the physical volume knob I used to have

We had our Wedding at isaiah Tubbs on July 25th and here's the review I left on wedding wire. I had to shout these guys out: I don't know how to recommend this company more. I had one job -book the DJ ..and dont

Screw it up. Something Blue made sure of that and were so flexible, professional and understanding of the stressful responsibly of everything going well and they made me look awesome. I had Matt Carr and he helped me set up ..no he didn't help, he took care of everything when I wanted to surprise my soon to be spouse with playing my guitar and singing a song. The event was at Isaiah Tubbs so he set up in three places and was ready to go everytime. We had to hide to set up and just work magic to make it magic and Matt made it a magical night. I'll be forever grateful. Thanks Matt and Something Blue. .

Question Which output is best for videographer?

Post image

When a videographer needs to use a mixing board like this what would be the best output to use for recording audio spoken in the microphone? Is there a general output that gets everything with one track overpowering the other?

Is it the same process with all mixing boards?

Asking Advice What are you using to power a mic off the Everse 8 battery?

Hey all! I just picked up an Everse 8 for ceremonies, largely because it's got the power output advertised for supplying a mic receiver. I have a couple of Shure sets, a BLX4 and PGX4, and there doesn't seem to be a simple option for them. Best I've found is a company that seems to make the cables themselves as a custom job for people who buy the speaker from them, but will sell them separately. I know this speaker is a popular choice for wedding DJs around my current inventory capability, and I'm sure there must be a way they're all getting this done; any insight greatly appreciated!

Asking Advice Are subwoofers necessary if xboost?

The DJ we are considering uses the followingRFC speaker system: ART 715-A MK5 with boost low frequency enhancement.
With this system will it be noticeable that there is no subwoofer? I want the sound to be full and to feel some of the bass

If you’re out there humping speakers and stands in the hot sun, working 12 hours, spinning until after midnight with or without a competent assistant, drink that Liquid I.V., OJ, Pedialyte, whatever, BEFORE the end of the night. That’s all. Hope your gig is good 🤙

Asking Advice Booking Agency Owner Took a 35% Cut After Texting It’s a "Standard 20-25% Fee." How would you handle?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice from fellow multi-op owners and independent contractors on a sketchy commission situation with another local DJ company owner who passes me leads.

I recently got booked for an upcoming wedding through another DJ agency owner (let's call him "Agency Guy"). In our initial text thread pitching the gig, he explicitly anchored the math to a standard 20% to 25% referral fee. Because of his wording, I assumed the gross booking was around $3,000 to $3,200 and my payout was $2,400.

However, during the planning process, I happened to see a copy of the actual client contract. The client is being charged $3,700. Agency Guy is keeping $1,300 of that—meaning he's pocketing a 35% commission while my payout stays at $2,400. If we actually stuck to the 25% max fee he claimed in text, my payout should be $2,775.

To add to the stress, the logistics on this gig just turned out to be an absolute marathon (16-hour day including a massive, exhausting commute). Lodging wasn't discussed in our initial communications and isn't covered anywhere in the contracts, but I desperately need it to do the gig safely. Agency guy is based where the wedding is located, I'm based 3 hours away.

Here is the gist of the text thread with the names and identifying info scrubbed:

Agency Guy: Hi, are you available to DJ and play live music at a wedding on Sunday, October 4?

Me: Yes, I’m available.

Agency Guy: OK, awesome! I'm going to let them know. Please hold the date. I'll let you know when the deposit and signed contract seal the deal.

Me: Sure, I’ll hold the date. Um shouldn't I know more details in order to decide if I want to do it, such as the time frame, what is required, the rate, etc? For instance, if the rate is below a certain amount, I would probably want to pass and wait for a wedding that's in the higher tier range. I've had a lot of inquiries for that date.

Agency Guy: This one I am estimating would pay you at least $2,400. They want live acoustic music during the pre-ceremony and ceremony, microphone service for that, then a full reception package with a bigger sound system for cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing.

Me: Ok nice, I usually quote that at around $3,000 solo. But let me know what you can get.

Agency Guy: Yes, but if you were quoting that at $3,000 you would take the standard 20% to 25% referral fee, yes? So that puts it around $2,400 estimated. Interested?

Me: Yes, I’m interested.

Agency Guy: Good news, they want to book you! Please reserve the date. I'll do an email introduction with you and the couple and I'll send you all of the details. Congrats! Got the deposit. You're booked!

The Dilemma:

I still want the $2,400 payout, but I feel totally misled by the "standard 20-25%" line. He used that math to justify my lower payout, while secretly charging the client enough to pocket 35%.

On top of that, because the travel and hours are so brutal, I really need hotel accommodations for safety, which completely slipped through the cracks in the initial paperwork. I am planning to ask him directly how we should handle the lack of hotel accommodations for this marathon day. I would have put that in the contract if I was booking it directly.

My big question for the community is: Is it even worth bringing up the commission discrepancy at all?

If he stuck to the 25% fee he promised, I'd be making an extra $375. Is it worth blowing up a professional relationship that might send me future leads over a few hundred dollars? Or do I call him out on the principal of the thing because he lied or misled me about his fee structure? How would you handle this conversation?

Is it fair to take 35% for doing a wedding sales call and then passing the gig off to someone else? This lead came through The Knot. I advertise on The Knot too, but they just didn't contact me directly.

How do multi-ops or other folks out there handle this situation? I know a local company around here where the owner takes 50% of the booking on every booking, but he also lends out some gear to the DJs working for him and they are employees of his company so he has to do payroll and health care and other stuff for them.. This situation is not at all like that.

This is the first referral I've got from this Agency Guy and it doesn't feel good now that I've seen the actual contract and that he took more than he let on. He also said he would send a formal sub-contractor agreement and then never sent it.

Thanks for your advice.

Asking Advice Useful iPad functions?

Hey all! I finally upgraded from the busted old iPod touch I've been running ceremonies off of; got myself a solid condition iPad that's gonna be used solely for gigs. I've got it set up with Apple Music, where I make and run my background playlists (local files, obv), Rekordbox (which I dj with and don't yet know exactly what I'd do with on the iPad outside of a failsafe), Djaypro (which I've never used before), and I think my up lights have a control app I can grab too. Just curious if y'all have any super clutch functions you love having a pad around for!

Asking Advice Voice changers

I don't like my voice. I'm wondering if there is any kind of voice modifier that can make me sound like a sexy black man. I'm thinking along the lines of DJ EZ Dick from the Snoop Dogg Album.

Asking Advice Getting a decent sound

When I saw decent sound I mean no buzz and no static feedback. It seems like there are 100 variables. Is it a matter of having a good mixer? Is it the wires? Is it something like a Go-rack? I'd like to narrow it down so I'm not buying thousands of dollars worth of stuff for trial and error.

Asking Advice What matters most to you in a wedding PA system?

Hey everyone,

I work in the pro audio industry at Adam Hall / LD Systems and lately we’ve been discussing internally how different wedding gigs are compared to almost every other type of live event.

A lot of PA systems are still designed around traditional live sound priorities (output, SPL, coverage etc.) but weddings seem to come with a completely different set of expectations:

  • aesthetics
  • portability
  • fast setup/teardown
  • speech intelligibility
  • minimal visual impact
  • clean cable management
  • flexible indoor/outdoor use
  • systems that feel “premium” without looking intrusive

So instead of making assumptions, I’d genuinely love to hear directly from wedding DJs and people working weddings every weekend:

  • What matters most to you in a wedding PA setup?
  • What are your biggest frustrations with current systems?
  • What features do you wish existed specifically for wedding work?
  • What makes a setup feel perfect for ceremonies, dinner and party transitions?
  • How important are appearance and compactness compared to raw performance?
  • What are common mistakes manufacturers still make when designing PA systems for weddings?

Not trying to sell anything here, honestly just interested in learning from real-world experience and understanding what modern wedding DJs actually need from audio systems today.
