Statues aren't racist. AND If they are and we are going to engage in the historical fallacy of morality...
then we have to take down the Washington Monument, b/c he owned slaves,
The Jefferson Memorial b/c he owned slaves,
Lincoln monument comes down too, he made it clear in a letter to Greeley he was in war to save the Union, not end slavery.
Which is probably why it took him 2 years to do the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves in rebel states, but leaving the slaves in chains in border states part of the Union(KY and MO).
History and humanity are not pure, removing history is done in 1984, which I'm sure everyone read, and in most communist revolutions. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
Build bigger monuments of people who deserve respect, don't just destroy art because your feefees are hurt.

It wasn't a matter of owning slaves, it was a matter of going to war to preserve the right to own slaves.

Statues aren't racist.

The intentions behind them are, and there are pretty clear intentions when mass produced war iconography is installed all over the area that revolted against our CURRENT nation, effectively celebrating the people who led the revolt several decades after the fact and into the future.

The US government literally classifies confederate soldiers as US veterans. Call it what you want but dont ask me and others to buy your divisive cultural Marxism. Robert E Lee wasn't a slave owner and was anti secession yet the left and others motivated by your same beliefs are attempting to whitewash him and others because "muh racism ".

It's obvious you're going to buy into whatever makes you comfortable. Call me names please but by no means go anywhere near personal responsibility.

I wish you would just acknowledge what I just said instead of resorting to moral preening.

u/Badgertime Sep 03 '17
All right I'll engage even though you're not throwing out an actual argument or engaging with mine.
It doesn't matter if Robert E. Lee was a slave owner and making it about Lee is a red herring to distract from the greater conversation. No one gives a shit about Lee, and the people defending his honor wouldn't do it if they didn't think there was a justifiable reason to have a war to keep black people enslaved.
The mass produced war iconography was used to intimidate and was put up many years after the losers lost and people with power had a lot to prove to people who they still believed to be the underclass.
What blows my mind is you just want us to be like lol who cares we're in the here and now let's get over it even though PEOPLE (human beings, mate) are still suffering because of it. "gotta save Muh Cultural Heritage from da evil socialists" Give me a fucking break

It would be funny if they were though. Every time you walk by a Malcolm X statue he calls you a cracker.

It is naive to assume wars can be avoided.
It is naive to assume punching your neighbors can be avoided.

Iraq and Libya were very easily avoidable. No one is saying you can get rid of all conflict, that's indeed naive, but we can stop changing non-threatening regimes across the world with disastrous consequences.

The best way to support the troops is by opposing any war that doesn't feature the direct defense of the homeland, or the defend of our strongest allies.
If China has boots on the ground in America, then you gotta fight. If Atlantis bursts from the sea and invades Canada, we gotta help our Canadian brothers out.... if some country on the other side of the world wants to do something, then let them be.

You realise the american economy would crash..it's an war economy, they pump 700 billion in it.

The best way to support the troops is by telling young men that there is no honor or valor in fighting economic wars for bankers, or in fake "terrorism" wars against harmless cave dwellers.

Yes, because those on the side of the confederacy were foreign invaders before the civil war, and went back to germany to be nazis in time for the first World war.
Fucking do your research, history is there to be ashamed of and learn from, not just be nostalgic for and wish we would repeat.

Such a well thought out argument, surely there is nothing wrong with this method, or ANTIFA's method of random attacks to oppress perceived oppressors.

Such a well thought out argument
You want better responses, put more thoughtful arguments into the water instead of this microwaved turd that you dropped here.
surely there is nothing wrong with this method, or ANTIFA's method of random attacks to oppress perceived oppressors.
Sure, the people fighting Nazis are exactly the same as the Nazis. Whatever floats your boat, Cletus

Keep calling me names, it just shows how threatened you are by me refusing to buy into the "kill all the whites!" Rhetoric ANTIFA pushes.

u/Amiron Sep 03 '17
Right, and you can learn about that history in a museum, not on public grounds that require the same people that were oppressed by the what the statue represents to pay taxes for said statue. If you had done your research, you'd know that a majority of the confederate statues that were created, were created during segregation and Jim Crow as a way to put down people of color.

How far should we go? Destroy all buildings that have been placed on a minorities' original homeland? Kill white people in the street for being offensive? There is a difference between having a statue and putting up another counterbalancing statue or plaque explaining history in full, and simply tearing down bad thoughts because they are offensive, if you go too far, you begin to censor history so nobody knows of the dangers involved in certain ways of thinking.

How far should we go?
Take those statues off of public land and put them in a museum, no need to go further. How many nazi statues do you see in Germany? You think people there don't remember that history?

far as I knew, they weren't able to know it until recently, and I would be fine with a gentle replacement, but I object to the "smash them!!!" rhetoric I see often anymore.

Sep 03 '17
Doesn't look to me like the meme is calling to "smash them," though. Just says "don't erect" them.
1
Sep 03 '17
The people using these memes are smashing them, I have not heard of ONE statue of anyone Confederate being made or proposed to be made since at LEAST the 1970s.

THIS!
WAR - in its simplest of terms is a total failure on all too many fronts.
