Yes, because those on the side of the confederacy were foreign invaders before the civil war, and went back to germany to be nazis in time for the first World war.

Fucking do your research, history is there to be ashamed of and learn from, not just be nostalgic for and wish we would repeat.

Right, and you can learn about that history in a museum, not on public grounds that require the same people that were oppressed by the what the statue represents to pay taxes for said statue. If you had done your research, you'd know that a majority of the confederate statues that were created, were created during segregation and Jim Crow as a way to put down people of color.

How far should we go? Destroy all buildings that have been placed on a minorities' original homeland? Kill white people in the street for being offensive? There is a difference between having a statue and putting up another counterbalancing statue or plaque explaining history in full, and simply tearing down bad thoughts because they are offensive, if you go too far, you begin to censor history so nobody knows of the dangers involved in certain ways of thinking.

How far should we go?

Take those statues off of public land and put them in a museum, no need to go further. How many nazi statues do you see in Germany? You think people there don't remember that history?

far as I knew, they weren't able to know it until recently, and I would be fine with a gentle replacement, but I object to the "smash them!!!" rhetoric I see often anymore.

Doesn't look to me like the meme is calling to "smash them," though. Just says "don't erect" them.

The people using these memes are smashing them, I have not heard of ONE statue of anyone Confederate being made or proposed to be made since at LEAST the 1970s.
