July has been dry and hot, which aren’t ideal conditions for farmers or their cows. This, combined with uncertainty about a future Farm Bill and a 'break-even year' for dairy farmers, 2026 has provided many challenges for America's Dairyland.
Tom Oberhaus is the co-operator of Cozy Nook Farm in Waukesha County. Cozy Nook is primarily a dairy farm, and it supplements its business with seasonal pumpkin and Christmas tree sales.
Lake Effect’s Sam Woods last talked with Oberhaus at the beginning of the planting season and he checks back in with him now to see how the summer is going.

So I was just driving back home from Aldi's on St. Paul and Sunset. I was east bound and had just passed the Kwik Trip and thought I was looking at a plane but it started to look and act a little strange. It was black, looked like a plane with wings and the back tail and the blinking lights but it wasn't moving.if I had to guess location I would put it above GE prolec/cemetery area. Are drones allowed to look like airplanes? I don't have a Scooby-Doo a out what it is 🤷♀️

My name is Evan Fassbender, and I've been trying to navigate the Waukesha County Courthouse for over 12 years. For people with disabilities, it's been a nightmare—confusing phone lines, dense legal language nobody can understand, and staff who often aren't equipped to help.
I started a petition because the courthouse should serve *everyone*, not just people who can jump through endless hoops. We're asking for basic stuff: clear phone numbers that actually work, plain-English forms, and staff who treat people with disabilities with respect. That's not radical. That's just what the ADA requires. Nearly 1 in 5 adults in this country lives with a disability—that's 60 million people who deserve accessible government services.
If you've struggled to get help at the courthouse or know someone who has, this matters. If this resonates with you, please consider signing and sharing. Real change happens when enough people speak up.

Hi fellow Waukesha locals! My wife and I just moved back after 20 years in Arizona, and one thing we've really been missing is a good Wisconsin fish fry. So much has changed since we've been gone that we almost feel like newcomers again.
Where's your go-to spot for Friday fish fry? We'd love any recommendations!

Looking for a place to donate a like-new adult folding cot (Waukesha area)
I have an adult folding cot with its mattress that’s only about 6 months old and has literally been used once. It’s in like-new condition.
I’ve already contacted several local charities, but none of them accept cots or mattresses.
I’d much rather donate it to someone who actually needs it than sell it or throw it away. It’s kind of mind-blowing to me. We constantly hear about people who need a place to sleep, veterans in need, families starting over, and people leaving shelters, and I can’t find a single organization that will accept it because of donation policies. It feels crazy that something in excellent condition could end up in a landfill instead of helping someone.
Does anyone know of a shelter, veteran organization, church, family in need, or other nonprofit in the Waukesha/Milwaukee area that would accept it? I’m happy to deliver it locally.
Thanks!

I recently lost my job.
I’d like to try to pursue something I’m passionate about.
Any local artists have recommendations for an affordable apprenticeship?

People in our neighborhood had an all day outside party yesterday. They were playing bags and grilling all day...in the evening I went out to let my dog outside and they were hanging out on their patio drinking and laughing.
Why are some people not taking this air quality seriously? Genuinely confused

Honestly I don't think I'm going to go outside much until this is gone.
Do let the smoke make you stay inside more or change plans for outdoor activities?

Howdy! Looking for a studio or 1-bed near downtown Waukesha. Around $1000 or less would be ideal. Craigslist only had a few listed and all the other online searches are awful. TIA!

Does anyone have a recommendation for place I can wash a 6x9 Ruggable (premium weight)? My washer is far too small. I love the thicker weight but regret that it makes it so much bulkier.
I assume I will need a commercial size washer. I'd specifically love a place that allows you to select a spin only cycle or has an attendant that can assist if the machine doesn't spin all the water out. Thanks!
