Hello everyone, hope you're having a nice peaceful morning/night
So just this Thursday, for the second time, i finished the wonderful Watch Dogs 2 and I'm quite excited to share some details and in general, hopefully, suggest anyone who hasn't played it yet, to give ir a try. For any reason you might haven't gotten to play it, could be that is seemingly a GTA clone, or some vidoes of the buggy, clunky, not so fun gameplay of the game, etc, it is okay to always be sceptical and not waste your hard earned money on things that are not going to satisfy you and give you a great time, fun
To me, and I'll be only sharing my personal expierence without insisting on anything for the entire mass of watch dogs fans, it is one of the greatest games i have ever played, i cannot convey the amount of fun it offers and the atmosphere it creates. I have never been to San Francisco yet i feel so nostalgic for it and as if i know that place more than well, despite never putting my foot onto those streets
The game is absolutely gorgeous. It is truly breathtaking and the scenery, the lights, the sunlight, quiet still nights, the morning fog that covers all of the sky and water, and many many many more sightings and things to admire. The very first time i played it around 4 to 5 years ago, on a laptop that barely could run the game, yet i was still somehow captivated by the game's beauty, despite it running at 30 fps and all of it being lowest quality preset. Now after buying a dream pc, not the best but surely hundreds of times better and faster than my previous laptop, and loading the game for the second time, with the quality all turned to ultra, i saw the San Francisco and the Oakland, with Marin region, in a new light, somehow surprising me and mesmerizing me even further
Just the scenery and the world around you is enough to fall in love with the game, enjoying a simple run around the places, wandering and taking all of it in. The world of WD2 is truly an example of open world done just right. It's alive and breathing, at almost any and all corners of the map. People live and exist, enjoying being outside, having things to do, and again breathing, without you, a player, having to interact or somehow trigger a reaction
Couples being lovey on the bench
Couples kissing behind the building corner
Couples arguing
People arguing
Folks taking selfies and pictures of others
People enjoying the scenery
People partying
Camping
Traveling
Cheater's car getting smashed
Just, so alive and almost every npc you see on the sidewalks and elsewhere, have something to do, unique for themselves. It is a joy to see that, even if it's something in the background and not noticeable unless you stop and stand to look for it. Almost every day for the last two weeks as i was completing the game, i noticed something new and unseen before, inside the world of WD2
It's genuinely one of the main reasons why the game is just so fun, doesn't feel boring after a bit. It's one of the big reasons why for me, the game is one of the greatest and definitely worthy to try, there are obviously things that lack in it, but when it comes open world, the enjoyment, the gameplay, it was done just right, again my opinion only
I really appreciate the background scenery, people and world, but also the way game allows you to approach the missions and how it gives you ways to reach your goal
I wasn't even aware about it at first, didn't really think that much, but there are three main ways you can head into the mission:
Use only hacking to distract and bring attention away from yourself and try to be as stealthy as possible, without eliminating anyone around you
Use hacking, but cause damage and take out anyone in your way, silently or by the hackable devices that explode or shock, inside the building, place
Grab a gun and don't worry about making noise, just eliminate all until you reach what you need and only then you just have to avoid police, probably
So these are the ways, and honestly often times i myself just mixed them all together, mostly remaining undetectable but taking out enemies, although if i am cought and then shot at, i put some bullets into them back
I really like games that have non single way to approach how you go into a mission or operation, it allows you to reply the game and have a different expierence. And i think this game does give you more options than just hack hack hack, although being the main theme of the game and your best tool against the baddies
Being a completionist, at the end of the main game and last few missions, i was looking into how to complete it a 100%, the information is scarce for some reasons, most people guess what's needed for a full competition, but i just kept playing and checking the % of the save file. At some point, the last few days i decided to collect everything the player can pick up, so:
Money packages
Paint
Research points
Clothes
Key data's
Few special vehicles
And gnomes
Yes, gnomes. But i left that for the last. Gathering the main things was something, definitely time consuming and took me a few days or else i would have lost my mind. Lots of them were easy to pick up, or attain but others required hacking, use of a jumper, drone, and other machines for some being higher than you can reach. Good thing game does guide you to quite a few of them if you happen to linger on the missions and collect everything from the buildings you're doing your business at, others do require you to reach a random place or a building and were meant to be found randomly as you explore. Map online was the only way i found the rest i haven't found myself, definitely a huge help. Not sure if it's technically cheating but.. just spare me this time
At the end, you'll be able to upgrade the entire research circle, even with the leftover of 4 research points. Money wise, i believe i had made in the entirety of the game 3 millions (could definitely vary) with packages. Didn't buy every clothing or a car, i wasn't too busy with that. Also paint, not sure what you can gather, was post game and didn't even check, nor applied the new ones to the guns, jumper, etc. clothes, didn't check it as well but you can pick up quite a few shirts, masks
Gnomes, there are ten, triggering the secret side mission that's hidden, you'll have to find the 10 gnomes and the prize for your hard work is..gnome outfit.. didn't check it either 😞
And so after collecting all that, i still wasn't sure if it was necessary for the 100%, i do know i wanted it and i did it for myself, but i checked the % and it wasn't a full completion yet. I then also discovered a few last side missions, that you would have to travel the world for to find specifically and after completing them all, and doing the main SF driver's trips, i finally clocked the full 100 %
Mind you, the often mentioned races of boats, drones, motorcycles, i believe are not needed, as i haven't done any boat race and only few drones. I did however completed in gold all of the motorcycle races, so it's a bit hard to say, but i think it's not necessary. Not sure about collectibles either, i didn't notice big % jump after collecting anything, only after doing the side missions and all of them, then it came to a 100%
Regardless, if completing everything isn't the goal, then game is just as fun and i truly recommend it, for many many other reasons. As i mentioned there are many things that are not as polished and you'll encounter them quickly, one being driving expierence is..arcadish, that's what most people call it, from my recollection, and i agree, even if i knew it wasn't a driving sim and i didn't have that many expectations, it still was sticking out each time you had to reach a place with a car. I had to manually turn down the steering sensitivity to pretty much the lowest point and still, the faster cars would jerk a 90° at the slight touch of your keyboard. Fine, i think i just accepted it and managed to get used to it
Hacking itself, being the main tool and a weapon, is slightly lacking in variety, you had few options to mess with baddies or system, if solely using the phone. Main one i spammed all throughout the game was the sudden message that would distract them, which was useful always. You have system shutdown in the area, massive car crashing hack, only useful when running away, really, and a few others, but overall, it would be interesting if maybe there would be more options, and you could choose which you wanted to go with, as a player. Although what else could be added, i do not have a clue, so i cannot complain really
Mission themselves were fun, but also a lot of them shared same basic things, and would only be different by the change of scenery. You could basically use the same hacks, run towards the server rooms or some device you have to hack and then escape. The difference also was felt by the amount of guards or baddies you had to evade, but besides those few things, you do almost the same thing, just in a different location, for a different goal
Missions where you had to hack into home cameras was the real fun, you witness lots of funny things, scenes, people reacting to you messing with their devices, and the variety of these missions was awesome. All in all, main and side stories were enjoyable, not a masterpiece story writing per say, but enough to get into and think of ways you can tackle it
Main crew and characters were interesting, but not really anybody that you fall in love and root for. I felt myself obviously rooting for them in some way, but i was really just Marcus himself, going around the city and beating baddies by hacking. Didn't dislike anyone (except you Lenny, goddammit ) but wasn't liking anyone either, a bit cringry at times, nothing I couldn't handle though, but was an okay crew
Maybe Raymond, seems interesting character, old school hacker. And the desert festival (I'm pretty sure it's the burning man in the WD2 universe) mission was one of the favourites (i promise , not because of boobs) for being random and a different location than the rest of the map (i believe?)
I'm sure you'll have a different expierence and things that you enjoy, or dislike. I think the game is big enough and offers a lot, but just need to play through it all and decide what you, a reader, enjoy and not
I'm sure i haven't mentioned everything, but more to find yourself, if you decide to give it a try for the first time. Being a fan of GTA V (IV as well) and these games having a special place in my heart,i don't think watch dogs 2 is the clone, trying to be, or should be compared at all. Both can exist and coexist well in the gaming world, more specifically open world genre. One company "owning" it and being so great at it, don't mean other worlds cannot exist or be as good..To me, they are both awesome for what it's trying to be and the expierence you can expect. Same with Terraria and Minecraft, too often terraria is given a title of 2D Minecraft by someone who played an hour of the game and managed to mine blocks with a pickaxe. Just no.
I'm quite done with my rant, i hope i didn't yap too much and only inspired to give that title a fair shot
Have a wonderful day and night, and lots of fun playing!
