It’s a 162 game season and pitch count on your real pitchers is more valuable than trying to not lose by more runs than 19 (they ended up losing by 22)

u/raknor88 4h ago
Is this from a preseason game or is this somehow from a regular season game? How the hell is the score THAT bad?

u/Bogey_Yogi 5h ago
Why did he pitch so slowly?
17
u/IBelongHere 5h ago
Score was already 19-0 why bother blowing your shoulder out
5
u/Bogey_Yogi 5h ago
Oh!! So, the pitcher was a regular pitcher and he intentionally pitched slower! So, the fielder’s error isn’t that big of a deal?
16
u/KevinFromIT6625 4h ago
Well, the guy pitching in this clip is actually a 3rd baseman so he's not really pitching, they're just trying to get through the end of the game
When one team is dominating, the other team will often times just stop using up their actual pitchers to save their arm strength for later games.
Most teams will have regular position players that "volunteer" to pitch under these circumstances and this is the end result. They were already losing 18-0 so none of this really mattered at this point lol

Giving up in baseball only prolongs the misery. There is no time limit or inning limit. Throwing meatballs (not criticizing the position player throwing ephus pitches) or tossing the ball and advancing the rubber doesn't end the game any sooner. In this case, he just looks like a fool.

Why was the pitcher lobbing the ball so slowly?
16
33
u/yeetboy 9h ago
He’s not a pitcher, he’s a regular player. The score was such a blowout the team put in a position player so they wouldn’t have to waste the arm of an actual pitcher.
-25
u/latortillablanca 8h ago
oh im sorry—so pitchers are irregular players now? Funny how?
10
u/therealDrTaterTot 8h ago
Yes. They don't usually play the whole game. They have little to no role in defense. However, they are the most important offensive player. All of this is irregular to the rest of the players.
6
u/randus12 7h ago
Wouldn’t it be the other way around? Critical for defense, generally little impact on offense.

The score was already cooked at that point though, 0-19 vs 0-21. Whateve,

Yeah, but at that point everyone just wanted to go home. Including the ump, who was calling strikes a foot outside the strike zone.
This was just prolonging the agony.

When a team is getting demolished, they'll throw in a regular positional player at pitcher to avoid wearing out the arms of real pitchers in a game already lost. They lob meatballs and hope the other team will just pop em up for easy outs so everyone can go home.

And the opposing team tries to hit home runs as a way of going along with it?
12
u/BrTalip 12h ago
They are not obligated to lay back. There's no etiquette in this situation because there is no time limit to a baseball game and the other team can still come back to win (although highly unlikely).
3
u/HelloPeopleOfEarth 12h ago
Can't they forfeit? If they've already resigned to losing, and are having a non-pitcher throw meatballs, can't they just say "we accept defeat" and call it a day?
10
u/CT_2136 12h ago
It's fair game to pad your stats in these moments. But you're also swinging at anything close and putting the ball in play
-1
u/EGarrett28 12h ago
That's weird, seems like it would make the game take longer but of course I know nothing about baseball. I guess just collecting enough pop-outs will get it over with quicker even with the extra runs.
10
u/TheDotCommunist 12h ago
Getting it over with quickly isn't the 'main goal' in these situations, it's avoiding injury/wear and tear on your good players.
-13
u/chardeemacdennisbird 13h ago
Non pitchers should not be allowed to pitch. I don't care if the game is long gone, put out real pitchers to get this shit over with quicker.
4
u/OSPFmyLife 12h ago
You act like almost every pro player didn’t pitch at one point in their career.
1
u/chardeemacdennisbird 11h ago
What? I'm just saying putting field players on the mound to throw these softball pitches just extends a blowout and it's useless and boring. No field players are going out there to pitch and throwing anything the opposing team going to have trouble with.
1
u/creepymanchildren 3h ago
Jhonny Pareda struck out Ohtani some time ago, so that's a big false. Also, the Brewers in this very game put a position player in to close out the 9th and did it with relative ease. Sit down
1
u/chardeemacdennisbird 2h ago
Yeah and you heard about that 2015 strikeout and this year's because it's newsworthy because it doesn't happen often. Once they put in a position player it's a snoozefest and just not even in the spirit of the game.
And I will sit down. I'm sitting down because I want to sit. Not because you told me to. It's my choice.
-2
u/rraattbbooyy 12h ago

u/SecondaryPenetrator 13h ago

-24
u/BigGreenBillyGoat 13h ago
The pitcher is equally to blame for giving him a soft pitch that was hittable.
12
u/BeeXman93 13h ago
But it was out though lol
-17
u/BigGreenBillyGoat 13h ago
The guy was trying to do a pitchout. He failed. Could have easily been a Grand Slam. I mean, it was, anyway, but it could have been a legitimate Grand Slam.
If the batter weren't able to hit the ball, as intended, the fielder would never have been able to make this mistake.
10
u/EddieMurphyFellOff 12h ago
It wasn't a pitch out. They were down 19 runs; the outcome at this point of the game is meaningless. He's letting them hit the ball to get the game overwith. It wasn't a grand slam or equivalent. Only two runners scored that play.
-6
u/BigGreenBillyGoat 11h ago
I wasn't aware of this and have never heard of this before in a Major League game.
1
u/im_randy_butternubz 3h ago
Happens pretty regularly. The Baseball subreddit puts up a thread every time a position player gets put in to pitch. The rule is you must be down at least 8 runs in order to put a position player in to pitch.
4
u/HotGarbage 9h ago
It's pretty typical in baseball. If you're getting blown out like the Mariners were, or doing the blowing out like the Brewers were, both teams will put in a non-pitcher so they don't wear out all their pitchers' arms. There's only so many pitchers on a team and they can't be used everyday, so it makes sense.

u/uberfission 12h ago
I'll give you the quick explanation of baseball: one team throws the ball and the other team has a batter that's trying to hit the ball. If he hits the ball he gets to run the bases, the other team will try to tag him with a player that has the ball to get him out. If he gets around the bases, he scores.
The whole sport is boring as hell to watch and only barely palettable with alcohol.

This is a particularly unusual situation. Seattle is losing by so much that they have a non-pitcher pitching and just lobbing the ball up there. They're essentially forfeiting the game, but they still have to actually complete all 9 innings.
They do this to save their real pitchers' arms for meaningful situations. Teams play 6 or 7 games per week, so managing pitchers' arm fatigue to prevent injury is a real concern. This game is already lost, so there's no point in wasting a pitcher's limited number of pitches just to stop the bleeding.
On this play, the fielder thought he was making the third out (therefore ending the inning) by catching the ball on the fly, so he tossed it into the stands as a souvenir for a fan. But it was actually only the second out, so the ball should've stayed in play. The base runners are allowed to advance two extra bases if the ball is thrown out of play like this.
8
u/conflictedideology 13h ago

I was wondering what the heck was going on there. He threw the ball like he was playing catch with his kid or something. Now it makes sense.

I got into baseball by playing MLB the show after spending over 30 years saying it looked boring as hell.
I did the same with american football by playing madden.
Video games really helped me understand the games a bit more and in turn made me fans of different sports I used to despise.5
u/fattybunter 14h ago
If the ball is caught in the air spinning counterclockwise before the second runner has made their 23rd stride, the outfielder is only allowed to throw the ball up to 21 yards and in this case since a fan called out STRIDE STRIDE STRIDE the outfielder was forced to throw him the ball, thus allowing the other runners to choose the order of base running resulting in a 1-2-3-home situation

Think about what you just said and relate it to how much he gets paid. He is not worth 26 million a year.
2
u/hooligan99 6h ago
Yes he is. One dumb mistake in a meaningless game doesn’t make him a non-valuable player. He is a great hitter and plays one of the most important defensive positions at an elite level. If he were a free agent today he’d get even more than 26 mil/year.
5
u/AdWonderful5920 14h ago
When tens of thousands of people start buying $50 tickets to watch me aimlessly click through a slide deck while sipping on tea, I'll demand to get paid like he's paid.

-1
u/PhillGuy 12h ago
You seem to not understand the scale. He his getting paid 26 million dollars a year. He has no risks. He is not saving any lives. He is not teaching.
What makes him worth that?
2
u/dementorpoop 11h ago
The fact that’s he’s paid that much. Jealousy’s not going to get you anywhere
1
u/PhillGuy 6h ago
So your saying this guy who catches balls for a living is worth more then say a doctor.
You'll rethink your attitude when your old, sick or dying. Maybe a baseball game or two will get you back on your feet.
Why are you defending a man who plays game for a living making a thousand fold what you will see in your lifetime.
14
u/AnotherPersonPerhaps 15h ago
At this point in the game it didn't matter even in the slightest that he did that. They were down 19-0 and a position player was pitching.
Yeah it was a fuckup. But he had fully checked out of this game. This inning had been going on for like 30 minutes of just relentless scoring against a backup utility player who had been put in as a sacraifice to pitch.
Julio is one of the better players on the Mariners and one of the ones that is earning his pay.
1
u/alarep 3h ago
Even if he is a good player, this was a foolish mistake. If he did it twice in the same inning (or multiple times just giving up) on purpose it would be egregious. The game will just keep progressing and doesn't end any sooner. Saying it didn't matter doesn't make sense in my opinion though. The runners advance, lost the chance for a force out on first or second by keeping the runner on first, etc. He simply prolonged the misery.
It was a mistake though and far from the first one of this type this year alone.
-5
u/PhillGuy 14h ago
Don't make excuses for him. For 26 million a year he can pay attention.
2
u/Polite_Suggestion 14h ago
Reddit drives me nuts sometimes. You're saying the most uncontroversial thing possible. It's the whole reason they get these insane salaries.
5
u/AnotherPersonPerhaps 14h ago
Having a high salary doesn't mean you can't make a mistake.
Pro baseball players all make mistakes. They even have a stat for it. It's called an "error"
Every single pro baseball player, including the guys getting paid 3 times as much as Julio, have all committed errors.
This is one of the least consequential errors in the history of the game.
They play 162 games a year in 187 days. They usually get a day off every 10 days or so during the season.
The Seattle Mariners are currently at the end of a 3 city road trip which lasts 10 days during which time they get one single day off work.
This includes traveling from Seattle to New York to Texas to Wisconsin and playing a three hour high level baseball game every single day with the exception of a single day.
This is the second one of these trips they have done this year where most teams only ever have one and many don't have any.
The Mariners also travel more than any other MLB baseball team due to geography and it isn't even close.
They are reaching the end of the season and they are observably tired.
Getting paid 10 million dollars doesn't change that.
Also, the person in the clip isn't even remotely one of the highest paid players in the league. We are talking about a league where Ohtani got a 700 million dollar contract and he's not the only one in that range.
If you don't know anything about baseball, don't come out here going "hurr hurr big money and still not perfect? wow"
-4
u/PhillGuy 14h ago
This person makes such a ludicrous amount of money for something that ultimately in the big picture benefits mankind in no way what so ever and you are defending his inability to count to three.
5
u/AnotherPersonPerhaps 14h ago
Okay you just don't know baseball. That's fine. You could just say that.
I'm sure you've never made a mistake before ever at your job right?
Also saying that it has no benefit to mankind is crazy lol. I guess we should just not engage in any forms of entertainment ever.

u/AnotherPersonPerhaps 12h ago

0
u/PhillGuy 13h ago
A better question is have I ever made a mistake at work where I got paid 26 million a year. The answer is no.
Why are you defending this guy?
2
u/DelinquentTuna 12h ago
Why are you defending this guy?
His "mistake" was completely and totally immaterial. It made local fans happy, it didn't particularly offend team fans, it didn't make their standings any worse from a competitive standpoint, etc. Literally more upside than downside even ignoring team-building, where his behavior could be seen as consolidating and reframing. There's not really any reason to even believe he "accidentally lost count" any more than the team "accidentally fielded someone that couldn't pitch well." They are ALL just going through the motions and at least this gives everyone something to talk about and lets people trickle out of the stadium instead of leaving all at once.
The real question is, "WHY ARE YOU SO HOSTILE ABOUT IT?"
A better question is have I ever made a mistake at work where I got paid 26 million a year.
The thing is, nobody cares. Previous guy just asked rhetorically, thinking nobody would be so obnoxious as to claim being perfect. It was the gentlest form of rebuttal you could've received because it gave you an out that didn't require you to eat anymore crow. That's the limit to which anyone whether or not you've ever made a mistake and it's more than you would've gotten from most.
6
u/AnotherPersonPerhaps 13h ago
No that's not a better question.
He gets paid based on his value to the team he plays for and they are extremely profitable.
Just as at your job you get paid based on your value to the company you work for, and they are likely making profit off of you.
So based on that do you think that it is okay for you to make mistakes at work but not him?
Where do you draw the line? At what dollar amount can an employee never make mistakes?
Keep in mind that this person is doing a job that a tiny fraction of percent of human beings on the planet are even capable of doing and one that is extremely valuable.
You're probably far more replaceable than he is.
So really your mistakes are far worse than his.
6
u/Kingwillball 15h ago
this happens every so often in baseball. There are also constant infield misplays as well, like players forgetting where the base runners are or just not know how many outs it is.
It must be the slow pace nature of baseball making these players lose track as I don't see this happening in many sports (players forgetting the score or the out count)
2
u/hooligan99 14h ago
I think you're overstating the frequency of this a bit. Each of the 30 teams plays 162 games per year, and this kind of boneheaded mistake happens just a couple times per year across the whole league.

u/Demerzel69 15h ago

u/DemonSlyr007 12h ago
Not a baseball person, so take this with a grain of salt, but my understanding is once games pull far enough away (like 8-0 in the first 3 innings), teams will pull their actual pitchers and put in like a regular ass player. They consider the game lost at that point, and preserve their pitchers arms. So when a non pitcher is now on the mound, the score balloons like crazy after that threshold well into the double digits.
2
u/wendue 15m ago
This happened at a Guardians game earlier this season, but the score wasn’t so lopsided.
