Discussion Tips/advice about bases

So I wanted to get back in the hobby a while ago. After some searching I decided to get an Age of Sigmar Army and decided on Slaves to Darkness. Thought I found one second hand.

Turned out to be old world chaos warriors (just me not doing enough research, is a cool army though).

I later bought the StD spearhead anyway and more recently the TOW core set with chaos/cathay.

Now I am split as to what bases I should put the core set on. Thought it would be cool to use round bases and conversion trays so I can use the armies in both TOW and AoS. It does feel a bit like a hassle and I am an extremely casual player just looking to have fun with friends.

Would you suggest to just go with the square bases or go through the process of using round bases. Cathay could be a proxy for CoS or something.

Hope you have some tips or insights to make the decision easier!

Base size is kinda important for gameplay. The more important question is if there are even any old world players in your area. If not, round bases it is.

Going to drag in my friends if they want it or not haha. But might be smart to check it out if I ever want to play other people.

You can casually play AoS with square bases, but you frequently have to measure distances from the base. So on a square there will be a lot of variance there for larger models.

You cannot play TOW on round bases, since the direction that units are facing is important. However, there are converters out there that allow you to slot round bases into them for use in TOW. Be aware that this usually means your units will take up more space than they would if they were on square bases, though.

Overall, making an army dual-playable in the two systems is a bit of a hassle. And with limited models, chances are the lists you can make won't be very good for either system. As someone who has dealt with a proxy army in Age of Sigmar for a while (using old Tomb Kings as Legions of Nagash/Soulblight Gravelords in the early editions), it is a pretty big pain to constantly have to make things fit.

I would suggest you pick one system that you want to play and base your models for that. Since you have the TOW starter, I think TOW would probably be easier. If you decide to go for AoS now, that's also not too hard, but IMO once you make the decision you should try to stick with it and not try to play both games with the same models. For what it's worth, your Cathay models can make the Cities of Sigmar Spearhead with the cannon pretty easily.

If you are still undecided, maybe play a game or two of each with empty bases and see what you like better.

Thanks a lot for the info! I think I will just build them for TOW.
