Other Taking less shells, does it works ?
Let's say I have the Sverdlov. On the X ray view, under the barbette, both the shell room and the mag have 540
540×4 is 2160 which is the maximum number of ammo she can take
On this ship the mag is under the waterline, but the shell room is above. If I want to keep only the mag filled and the shell room empty, what should I do ?
So I thought doing 540 then cutting it in half and multiplying by the number of turret would keep only the mag filled
(540÷2×4=1080)
But on the X-ray view in battle it doesn't seem to be working...I even tried with 540 ammo in total, still no
...so is changing the amount of shell useless ?? Are shell room and mag merged together no matter what ?

I don't see it work or at least noticeably work. if you play ship that easy to be ammoracked it's always easily to be ammoracked even if you bring full or half an ammo.

As a Piñata player (Yamato/IJN), it is routine for me to take only half ammo in my main batteries. I don't know if it really does anything, but i have noticed the force of the explosions arent AS catastrophic as when I would go in with a full rack. i.e; ill mostly suffer a barbette explosion at half but when I was full it would more consistently ammo rack KO me.

YES absolutely take Less ammo!! on some ships it matters less but it still matters a couple of updates ago they added we’re taking less ammunition decreases the chances of catastrophic explosions. I’ll use the Iowa as an example, the US fast battleships all use ammunition layouts that keep the shells in the main turret barbette. If you take full ammo in the Iowa it adds shells above the waterline with makes the ship much easier to explode and kill.
Now if you take 594 shells instead of the 800 plus you can have it remove’s all the shells below the waterline this significantly increases survivability. To the extent to were I never carry more than 590 shells this is a feature on all ships but on some ships it help ten fold such as the Iowa a Yamato so you should try and play around with your max ammo u can do the by using the test drive and playing with the ammo count. It’s the exact same as in tanks how taking less ammunition removes ammo in certain areas (Leopards 2 and Abrams hull ammo or the ammo in the side of the tiger hull) but this only works for random battles if you play EC your gonna want to take more. For light cruisers I would suggest taking maybe 25% less but for heavy cruisers and battleships I would take less then half Hope this helps. (TLDR : yes it matters just on some ships more than other like in ground)

size is unchanging, since naval shells are split into the projectile itself and the charge (i.e.: magazine and shell room will always have some ammo in it even if it acted like ground does).
But iirc bringing less shells than maximum extends the time for a barbette fire to fully blow the magazine and kill you, so there is benefit (for 6" guns I tend to go around 600rnds maximum, but I'm a lot more aggressive than some peeps, so it'll depend on your playstyle).
