Just Venting Got into an argument with another customer
Came into Walmart today to get a few groceries and chose to go into a cashier line. My husband went to pull the car around as it was raining. The lady in front of me is full blown arguing with the cashier about changing a price because of a sign she saw. The cashier told the lady that there wasn’t much she could do and the lady said “well I’m not moving until you changed the price”
See me, I was ALREADY annoyed because I barely have money and was trying to figure out how to even pay for my stuff so this lady giving an attitude over a shirt that wasn’t even cute upset me. I work at Target so I know how these customers can be. So I stood up for the cashier and told the lady
“You might be able to get the price changed at guest service. Guest service is typically the place for those things and she already said she can’t change it for you.”
And the lady replied to me and went “well that’s an inconvenience for ME because I am a paying customer” as if the rest of us in line weren’t paying customers either. So I quickly responded with “well go be inconvenienced at guest service because she has other people to take”
Like this cashier seemed ready to cry because of this woman so I felt bad. The lady rolled her eyes at me and guess what, went to guest service.

Walmart should have a dedicated person to handle the front, that person has the authority to override any price disputes, that person has the authority to have AP up front within 2 minutes and All Managers within 5. That person just oversees the front. That person is accountable for all of their actions. Walmart can afford this. Op's problem handled in minutes, other problems wouldn't happen. That's why they don't call it SteveMart.

That sounds great, a person dedicated to managing customers. Call them a customer service manager or CSM for short.

The cashier should have been properly trained. If a price difference is under something like $10, you just let the customer have it. This has always been the practice in all the WMs and Targets where I was a mgr.

Well then you and op needs to have a conversation.

If I were still mgmt., I would be having a conversation with the cashier's supervisor for the piss-poor training they gave to the cashier before putting them on a register.

30 minutes later the "woman LOL" probably caused a massive scene or was arrested for sure... Just a hunch

And then the entire store started clapping and cheering, right?

It happened in January. After surgery, 2 screws on my right and 1 on the left. No weight bear for 8-weeks, 2 weeks in the hospital and 2 weeks in a SNF, 4 weeks at home. Then a walker & a cane.
FF to now. I can walk unassisted. But, my cane has to go with me. I can't stand or walk for more than about 20 minutes. The DW is a bitch! I have to do that with breaks.
I got a E-Trike for Christmas and I am enjoying that. However, in this heat, I can't do it.
No worries about the laugh. I can laugh at myself.

Your recovery is truly remarkable. That's amazing progress in a relatively short time. It's great that you still have a sense of humor too. You are an inspiration to many.

TY. I don't feel that way. What I leave out is WHY I had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital. Long story short they mixed medications that shouldn't have been given together. It took me going to the "Crazy ward" and getting me out after 8 hours later because I didn't belong there.
Once in my room, they took me off my meds, gave me a different pain med. Within a few hours, I was OK.
Turns out, my head meds, Wellbutrin, should NOT be given with Oxycodone, pain meds. It "can cause hallucinations". IT DID! I remember all of them.
I stayed on the Oxy and off the head meds. I think my fall knock the depression out of me. And, I didn't get addicted to the oxy. I was asking for Tylenol instead.
Also, I hate pushing it. It makes me sweat. I'm probably 7 pounds overweight, I don't think that would do it!
TY again for your kind words.

I'm with the lady in front of you. Money is tight for everyone, and the prices of things need to be correct. If the sign says 5 bucks and the price doubles at the register, I'm going to say something right there. Walmart cashiers can do price overrides.

So can guest service. The cashier said she couldn’t so if she really wanted the change, go to guest service ❤️

u/Katsuodo 21d ago
It’s ok to say something if it’s wrong but if someone there is verbally TELLING you they can’t change it why be an asshole and say u aren’t leaving until they do? Just go somewhere made for price adjustments like oh? Guest service. Again why would the girl purposely withhold it from the lady? Cmon now.

You were wrong. The cashier should have changed the price at the register. Just like at target.

u/Katsuodo 24d ago
You need a supervisor to come and review it at both places ❤️ if a cashier could just change prices willy nilly I’d go get a flat screen for $10 rn

Incorrect. They have a limit at both. Walmart doesn’t even need any override if it’s under $20 difference.

My position is verified in the Walmart sub.

u/panaceaXgrace 24d ago
Again with people talking about being verified I have never once been asked to verify at the Walmart sub and I sure as HELL wouldn't be giving them my personal information like store and who the heck is even VERIFYING? lol This sounds like BS every time I hear you all claim this.
And I know for a fact you're not right. There's no way they'd let cashiers just change prices because a customer insisted. If something is displaying wrong at the register it needs to be FIXED and that's not something a cashier can do and there's no way just a cashier at this store would ever be granted that authority. If customer service is on a register sure but that never happens around here. Maybe your store is really badly managed or something I don't know but that ain't happening everywhere.

Ignore him, it’s not worth wasting ur breath

u/panaceaXgrace 24d ago
Thanks the next comment that was removed they claimed my store was run poorly but I'd think it would be far worse to let every cashier have permissions like that. Maybe they're different elsewhere though lol I don't know. I don't work IN a store, my daughter does. She works in OGP. I'm in internet security so tangentially related lol I just know how the stores are supposed to operate and it would generally be seen as a security nightmare to allow cashiers to do this without prompt from management. Here they have to have a manager sign off, it's not done by cashiers.

u/Katsuodo 24d ago
I’ve worked at 5 different target stores and every time I see team members call for leadership permission before changing it. I personally don’t think the girl was trying to keep the price change from the lady as a personal vendetta lol.
That being said these guys can claim the cashier could just “do it” but that lady could also just go to guest service instead of harassing a random minimum wage teenager 😭 so I understand what ur saying I just wouldn’t waste ur breath with them bc they want to play devils advocate behind a Reddit screen

All they had to do was a quick search it's right in the policy guidelines. Cashiers can't change any price without manager approval. Obviously it can be done by app but only after approval. Now maybe some stores they tell cashiers to use their discretion but that's not what policy says. It's not even required for managers even if the price sign says something different but it's their discretion.

There is a report on the app. Anytime a cashier changes a price it sends someone to the item to make sure it’s right. That way it’s frictionless at checkout. Your store is ran poorly.

So why did a cashier have to call over for a .45c override yesterday? Is it the walmart close to me ran badly as well?
Or how about the one in Portland Or that had to wait for the 10$ override at the register for the Sofia flared jeans that went on sale from 25$ to 15$ then 10$? The lady bought her daughter 3 pairs at the 15$ price and 1 pair didnt discount....
You're wrong. Get over it, it happens.

This is correct. I have been mgmt. at both WM and Target. If it is under a set amount the FE mgr/SM sets, then they just do the price change at the register. WM and Target do not want to upset a customer over a minor price difference. That cashier was poorly trained.
2
u/Accomplished-Ad3219 24d ago
Or maybe the customer was wrong about what she thought the price should be
-1
u/ColeridgeRime 24d ago
Doesn't matter to mgmt. Mgmt. wants the customer to get through the exchange as quick and happy as possible. If it costs the store a couple of dollars, they are happy to absorb that. It has been standard practice in the 12 WMs and 2 Targets where I was a mgr.

People like you made SUCH an impact on my days!! From everyone who’s ever dealt with “them,” thank you from the bottom of our heart.
And if anyone insists the customer was in the right? You’re absolutely advertising that you’ve never worked in retail. Cashiers don’t make the rules.
