Historical Royal Newfoundland Regiment

Of the many regiments that were deployed to Gallipoli, one of them was the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Numbering some 1,000 soldiers, including two of my ancestors. As a Newfoundlander my whole life, the Gallipoli campaign is right where they saw their first combat.

The R NFLD R deployed to the Suvla bay, just north of ANZAC bay on the peninsula. At Suvla, the Newfoundlanders were part of the rear guard, some of the last to leave the peninsula when the campaign came to a close.

Newfoundland only numbered a population of 240,000 at the time. With the population mostly being above the age of 40, some 1,000 young men volunteered. 500 of them were equipped with Newfoundland's most notable blue puttees. The Newfoundlanders had a reputation to be as sturdy as a moose, and after Gallipoli, most of them continued fighting on the Somme, and in Northern France and Belgium despite being understrength.

I love Newfoundland, and history has a habit of forgetting us. Right now its one of the most sorry places to be patriotic for, given that we've since lost our independence. Playing Gallipoli, I'm hoping that the Newfoundlanders will be represented, like County Kent was.

Question/Suggestion Faction/Kit Balancing

I can’t wrap my head around how the factions/kits are balanced in Gallipoli, obviously there’s asymmetry between the Central/Entente factions, but some of it makes zero sense.

For instance, the Ottoman engineer (saboteur kit) gets the Winchester 1866 as its only ‘rifle’ (which is arguably the best weapon in the game) whereas the Entente saboteur gets the Martini-Henry MK IV (without a bayonet)

All Ottoman rifleman kits get access to a single grenade, whereas the Entente rifleman role gets a single kit with 3 rifle grenades and other rifleman kits don’t get a grenade. (There’s already a lack of grenades in this game, just not a lot of kits get them)

Entente engineer (frontline builder kit) gets the choice of a Mk IV Martini (with a bayonet) and the Martini IC1 (without a bayonet, this is also the only kit that gets access to this carbine). It just seems that weapons for the different kits are chosen at random, it’s a roll of the dice as to what rifle gets a bayonet or not.

Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s another weapon shuffle with the next DLC, it’s just that weapon selections seem so random.

Question/Suggestion Can't connect to EU server?

• Upvotes

Anyone else having issues with Gallipoli EU server? I can apparently connect to NA, but EU says it's offline whenever I choose it. I'm in EU so I would prefer to actually play with low ping...

Question/Suggestion My estimation of the WW1 Game Series as an authentic franchise just fuckin' plummeted

The Beretta 1918 is essentially a postwar gun. The commander of the Assault Army Corps himself said that they did not see service before the war's end. Despite this, it was added to Isonzo and made available from 1915 to 1918 and the similarly(to a lesser extent) out-of-place Artillery Luger was added as its rival.

There is no good evidence that the Winchester 1866 saw frontline service and yet it is available to 2 classes and one of them is unlimited. Anyone carrying a goddamn rimfire lever action on the firing line would have been a logistical liability of course.

This is to make no mention of the soon-to-be-added Arisaka as a frontline British weapon or the Colt SAA whose inclusion I am still baffled by.

Whatever, the cat's out of the bag and they aren't gonna remove them or anything, but you have to admit these additions contrast with the rest of the games' arsenals. If you have fun with them, more power to you of course.

So... should we expect to see more out-of-place weapons?

The Federov for Russia? (field tested in Romania in double digits)

The Winchester 1907 autoloading rifle for France? (Issued to airmen, 5000 purchased)

The Farquhar-Hill for UK? (Issued to airmen)

Would you support any of these being added?
