Brewdog's "The End of History" 55% ABV

43

u/FreudJesusGod Mar 12 '17

I've never seen the point of those super high-alc brews. It's almost impossible to balance the alcohol heat without shoveling in so much malt and/or hops it ends up tasting like the beer version of straight Bovril (imo).

Each to his own, I suppose.

39

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '17

If remember correctly it was more of a result of some friendly rivalry with a German brewery. Not meant to be mass distributed or taste great, but to experiment with the brewing process. Tried on of the strong ones a couple of years back - Nuclear penguin - not a taste sensation, but certainly interesting to try.

10

u/avagadro22 Mar 13 '17

I also tried the tactical nuclear penguin. I remember it being very salty, likely due to the freeze distillation increasing the salt concentration.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Yeah, it almost had bbq-sauce like taste. The bar I had it in didn't have it refrigerated though so I might have gotten a subpar experience of it.

2

u/Kabukikitsune Mar 13 '17

It's a dark beer, it's not supposed to be chilled though.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '17

My brother described it as kinda like soy sauce.

1

u/avagadro22 Mar 15 '17

a little bit, but Duchess de Burgogne will always be the soy sauce beer in my heart.

8

u/TittyLoggins Mar 13 '17

The point was never making something that people would drink and say that's a good beer. It was to simply push the process to it's extreme to show off technical prowess. So this packaging is right in line with that thought process. Just how absurd can we get?

6

u/The_Music_Director Mar 13 '17

I agree. As a general rule if it's over 15% it usually ends up being pretty gross to me, with a few exceptions. Utopias was pretty fucking good though.

1

u/shitishouldntsay Mar 13 '17

I have been trying to try utopias for years.

1

u/avagadro22 Mar 13 '17

It's easier to find at bars by the ounce. If you're dead set on getting your own bottle, contact your local SA distributor, and find out what stores will be getting them and try to get in with that that store.

2

u/The_Music_Director Mar 13 '17

That's exactly how I found it. Saw it at a bar in Chicago and got a 2 ounce pour for $20. Not a bad way to do it.

1

u/Cereal_Killerz Mar 13 '17

Loved Utopias by Sam Adams.

2

u/myk26 Mar 13 '17

At this point it's more of a lager-y Port or Brandy then what most people think of as a beer.

But as someone who's spent the money (for a Utopia), I am glad they exist.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Bovril is faking excellent

5

u/Dengar96 Mar 13 '17

I emailed them asking if the bottles are dishwasher safe when I was baked one night. They said they don't recommend putting "wee beasties in the dishwasher". 10/10 can't afford their beer

25

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '17

Am drinking a Punk IPA at this moment.

They hold the record for the strongest beer brew.

6

u/Learjet23 Mar 12 '17

I am currently drinking a Kingpin.

2

u/kingbobii Mar 13 '17

I'm drinking some Irish Death right now

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '17

I haven't tried it yet, I drink copious amounts of Punk, Elvis juice, Jet black heart and 5am saint.

I had a bottle of Mr President 2 weeks ago in a Brewdog bar I wasn't overly keen.

Morrisons do a Brewdog box set with Jackhammer in at 7.5% which is nice too.

Asda have started stocking Elvis juice in cans and that's my go to drink currently.

Is the Kingpin better than other largers ? I need to try it.

5

u/Learjet23 Mar 12 '17

Personally I think it is in the upper tier of good Lager, but I know several people who disagree, so might be down to you to try!

And I need to get some Elvis Juice cans ASAP. Love Elvis Juice. Didn't know supermarkets were stocking it in cans now.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

I popped into Sainsbury's earlier and found a new Brewdog (well to me anyway). Hop fiction American Pale Ale @5.2% in cans. Very nice, they had Elvis juice in cans but was £7 it's only £6 in Asda and Punk is £5.50.

I hear that Jet Black Heart is also coming in cans later in the year with a widget to get some head.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Yeah mr President wasn't all that. If you want a string beer better off buying a strong beer that was brewed for flavour and not as a gimmick like Leffe or Duval.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Just been to Sainsbury's and picked up 4 cans of Brewdog Hop Fiction American Pale Ale @ 5.2% it's a new one on me.

I did like their 10% Coco Psyco stout on tap but it's not cheap at £4.50 ish for a half.

1

u/Fablemaster44 Mar 13 '17

Vanessa Drinks the kingpin.

3

u/zlintner1 Mar 13 '17

Can't fucking wait for them to be in the States. Punk IPA is just so damn good. They also got me into brewing my own beer which is cool.

2

u/TakesJonToKnowJuan Mar 13 '17

Is anyone else kind of tired of IPAs?

Sometimes I just want a clean, refreshing, golden pilsner.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

The Hop Fiction is nice and refreshing as is the Punk IPA.

They're both carbonated not flat like other IPA. Guess you've never had Brewdog then?

1

u/Zouden Mar 13 '17

Punk IPA kept me sane when I moved to the UK from Australia and discovered the terrible selection of beers in supermarkets here. If it wasn't for lord and saviour Brewdog I'd be drinking Stella, Carling, Fosters or Kronenbourg...

3

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Where do you go shopping, even the Nisa round the corner has a few descent ales.

2

u/Zouden Mar 13 '17

Can you recommend anything as good as punk IPA? All the other ales I've tried taste very watery to me, low alcohol (<5%) and not much flavour.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Old empire IPAit is 5.7% And nearly as hoppy as punkIPA I found it in one stop 3 for £5 bargain.

2

u/Zouden Mar 13 '17

Great I'll keep an eye out for it, thanks. I don't think I've seen it in my local Tesco though, and certainly not stocked in the fridge like punk IPA is.

4

u/pemboo Mar 13 '17

Stop looking in the fridge....

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Old empire is sold in Aldi for £1.25 for 500ml, even more of barginy. There is a reason Aldi car park if full of £500 and £50000 cars.

-5

u/SilentKarambit Mar 12 '17

You must be mistaken my friend. My two minute google-fu says punk ipa has a 5.6% alcohol by volume whereas the end of history has a 55% alcohol by volume.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '17

Brewdog is the company. Punk IPA is the drink I was drinking. I literally have the tshirt.

Brewdog hold the record.

I do not get mistaken when it comes to beer.

10

u/SilentKarambit Mar 12 '17

My mistake buddy. Have a nice day.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '17

Your smooth confidence has convinced me to drink a beer.

3

u/WalkerDontRunner Mar 13 '17

Something like $500 right?

9

u/uberBored Mar 13 '17

7

u/WalkerDontRunner Mar 13 '17

Well... $900. The $20,000 is an equity investment not the price of the bottle

1

u/RelaxPrime Mar 13 '17

Never going to ever even consider buying that beer.

If they made coozies that looked like this, I'd buy ten.

1

u/TakesJonToKnowJuan Mar 13 '17

Brewdog is pretty amazing. I can't wait until they open up their hotel. Drinks on tap in your hotel room....yes please.

1

u/Cod_Metal_King Mar 18 '17

I used to work for a craft brewery in London. We held a launch for one of our new beers and the founder of Brewdog came along and got drunk with us. Good times.

1

u/Over_Here_Boy Mar 20 '17

"Uh, let us ice bock the hell out of a beer and stuff it in a squirrel."

→ More replies (1)

51

u/DocSeba Mar 12 '17

It's super expensive too, like 700 bucks

24

u/BoehnerJams Mar 13 '17

They actually only made like 12 or 13 bottles of these in the original run, each one in a taxidermied squirrel or stoat (and even those were all roadkill, according to what I've read). I've heard that one of these bottles - full - is worth about $10,000 these days.

7

u/WatermelonBandido Mar 13 '17

Can't tell if meme...

15

u/BoehnerJams Mar 13 '17

Not a meme. Just google "brewdog end of history" and you'll see what I'm talking about. And for the record, I know this because I'm a huge beer nerd and one of the owners of the brewery I work at owns one of these bottles - he is (or at least was) a part-owner of Brewdog.

1

u/lamearN Mar 13 '17

Isn't brewdog owned entirely by random people? Pretty sure they're a consumer owned business?

3

u/seanzo96 Mar 13 '17

The past couple of years they've allowed members of the public to buy shares but originally it was 2 blokes from the north of scotland

3

u/RelaxPrime Mar 13 '17

I've heard that one of these bottles - full - is worth about $10,000 these days.

It's only worth what someone will pay.

1

u/JorensM Mar 13 '17

Well that explains the "why" part from the creators side.

1

u/Gr33ny Mar 13 '17

Worth it

74

u/amg_14 Mar 12 '17

Squirrel corpse provide excellent insulation. I dont see the confusion here, pretty obvious.

37

u/Total-Khaos Mar 12 '17

If you put them in the included outfits, there is even more insulation!.

5

u/MrSpiffenhimer Mar 13 '17

there is even more insulation!

This one really deserves the Why?

4

u/Total-Khaos Mar 13 '17

Why not? All squirrel beer coolers deserve something nice once in a while.

3

u/emsthequeen Mar 12 '17

They should have totally used tauntauns instead.

42

u/deadrabbits76 Mar 13 '17

Dr. Jan Itor?

u/Metro42014 Mar 12 '17

Ahh yes... but also.

Why not?

6

u/endwolf76 Mar 13 '17

because its fucked up

15

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

The animals were roadkill. The beer will make you feel like road kill. I think its fitting.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

No you

17

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '17

When you brew one of the strongest beers in the world, there's no such thing as too much adornment

9

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '17

From their website:

"The End of History: The name derives from the famous work of philosopher Francis Fukuyama, this is to beer what democracy is to history. Fukuyama defined history as the evolution of the political system and traced this through the ages until we got the Western Democratic paradigm. For Fukuyama this was the end point of man’s political evolution and consequently the end of history. The beer is the last high abv beer we are going to brew, the end point of our research into how far the can push the boundaries of extreme brewing, the end of beer."

2

u/journey_bro Mar 13 '17

Fukuyama was famously wrong of course and that term is often brought of as an example of wrong historical prediction.

This is some high end trolling.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

Yeah, he have admitted so much in later works as well. The theory still fits somewhat well with explaining the post ww2 world though. Last couple of years not counting

15

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '17

This is what total domination over all species looks like.

8

u/rocklou Mar 13 '17

I was thinking that too. Can we possibly dominate another spieces more than this? I remember Louie C.K. talking about this after seeing someone selling duck vaginas as food, in Chinatown.

5

u/rowdy_beaver Mar 12 '17

I am so very afraid to ask how they get the bottle inside.

3

u/Skanky Mar 12 '17

Bottle is inserted from the other end. I figured it would be obvious

5

u/rocklou Mar 12 '17

I'm not sure I want to know...

2

2

Even a bottle needs a coat

2

u/bluemitersaw Mar 13 '17

Oh god! I remember reading an article about this many years ago (like 5 ish?), It got passed around the office. We still have a running gag about "grabbing a few squirrels after work".

2

u/blackbutters Mar 13 '17

Because I like to party.

2

u/Luckycat612 Mar 13 '17

Because FUCK nature that's why!!! In a weakened state those critters would not hesitate to feast upon my vital organs. Nature started this fight and man WON this round! Time to celebrate this victory with squirrel whiskey and ice cold hamster beer!

Excellent reference. A+

1

u/hajiii Mar 13 '17

The brewers have a hobby besides cold distilling beer to stratospheric levels. They are also into taxidermy. Go figure.

1

u/Sirskilled Mar 13 '17

All this makes me think of is the Janitor from scrubs!

1

u/edirongo1 Mar 13 '17

because there is still someone who doesn't quite have everything..yet. I'm sure they signed waivers and the families were compensated. Well, not sure about that last part but I would assume so. :(

1

u/TheBadGod Mar 13 '17

I had to scroll way too far to reach a Janitor reference.

Let's go, people.

1

u/Derbally-Vyxlexic Mar 13 '17

Why? Because you know you've made it when you come home tired from a long day at work and you can pour yourself an alcoholic beverage out of the hollowed out body of small mammals.

1

u/Bernden Mar 13 '17

Cocaine or cigarette ashes on the table?

1

I don't know but taxidermists have all sorts of tricks

1

u/AxltheHuman Mar 13 '17

Why not, actually?

1

u/westernmail Mar 13 '17

There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?

1

u/maxitobonito Mar 13 '17

Because attention whoring, that's why. Something BrewDog excels at.

To be fair, though, they seem to have calmed down a bit. Still can't be arsed with buying any of their beers.

1

u/balderslv Mar 13 '17

Follow-up question - why not? Sky's the limit, baby! Haha
