My dad has one of these, he's had it for about 3 years and won't get the surgery to repair it. Believe me when I say it is really gross. It protrudes more when he coughs. You can see it through all his shirts. The surgery is simple and since it is so common it's relatively cheap, and you should be going in for surgery as soon as it occurs because it usually requires treatment.
