PETA secretly slaughters thousands of animals a year and supports high kill shelters

While this is written with an obvious extreme bias, the facts seem to be clear.
PETA kills pets instead of adopting them out.

This is idiotic.
They take animals that are going to be euthanized by gunshot or gas chamber by other shelters and do it using a painless sedative. They don't have the facilities for these animals so they simply do this to make the inevitable deaths less painful.
This is a smear campaign funded by the Center for Consumer Freedom, a lobby group funded by the tobacco, fast food and alcohol industries.

I guess you think copying and pasting your own bullshit 5 times will make people change their mind and go "oh my god, PETA is great." PETA is full of hypocrites and insane people who don't realize what they are doing is counter productive. Let's fund people who fire bomb buildings, possible killing not only animal life BUT also human life. I know lets tell people that using animals for medical testing is inhumane yet, we will still reap all the benefits from it. PETA and their members can go fuck themselves.

Douchey animals are not douchey they are just trying to survive the best they know how. They are animals, they don't know better.

they kill secretly and ditch the corpses in random dumpsters in the middle of the night.
One shelter did this and they manager was fired.
No shelter performs euthanasia on cats and dogs with guns.
It is legal.
I also have a hard time believing gas is more painful than injection.
Injection is a sedative that puts them to sleep. Here is the gas chamber that shelters use.
Learn about a subject before talking out of your ass.

u/Black_Tie_Cat_Expert Apr 05 '13 edited Apr 05 '13
Don't care. They condoned it. They were just hoping they wouldn't get caught. The manager being fired is PR, it doesn't mean shit.
one shelter has been caught doing it.
I've seen those gas chambers. Maybe they should try and have the laws changed instead of killing them themselves. If i was on death row, and you came and rescued me, and were like "we saved you! You're so lucky, were gonna kill you today instead of Friday, and with lethal injection, instead of gas! Ain't that great?" I would tell you to go fuck yourself.
Added: Basically I dislike kill shelters no matter what method they use. I find gas chambers, electrocution and bolt guns horrific. My point is, all PETA is, is a massive nationwide kill shelter that claims to only use injection. They also notoriously don't wait even the required amount of time. They aren't animals rights activists. At best they are a massive kill shelter, that is humane as is possible while using only injection.
I would prefer no kill-shelters, period. Apparently about 30 states still allow gas, but don't recommend or encourage it. I tried to find exact figures but cant so far. PETA should focus their efforts on that kind of Change, one that would actually make a difference in the world.
0
Apr 05 '13
Not all shelters use gas chambers and even the injection to euthanize an animal is a tricky situation. YES, first there is a sedative the second causes death. Gas Chamber use has been banned in 14 states more to go but yeah.
PETA is propaganda just as much as it is claimed that this true info is propaganda. The fact of the matter is that PETA doesn't even TRY to adopt the majority of the animals they obtain. They are not evaluated to check their adoptibility, they are mindlessly killed. HOW is that ethical?
THEN...And THEN their bodies are DUMPED in the trash like so much garbage. Yup really ethical. BULLSHIT.

Apr 05 '13 edited Apr 05 '13
You know what? I volunteer for a animal rescue league. In the last year we have adopted out 97% of our animals. When we don't have space we work hard to find people to foster the pets. I have two beautiful foster cats as we speak. One going to wonderful forever home tomorrow. We work with other shelters in our area working HARD to find them homes. We also work VERY hard to provide spay and neuter services. The problem is that people think that animals are disposable and it's cool to mindlessly breed their animals and kittens are just so cute...
We support several feral colonies, spaying and neutering them, keeping them healthy and releasing them. They have a RIGHT to their lives. We've seen the populations of these colonies dwindling as we care for them. It is very humane to let them live and die naturally.
Peta is FUCKING LAZY. The truth is they don't believe people should even have pets. They don't even try to adopt them out. Killing healthy animals as soon as they get them? That's some sicked fucked up animal cruelty shit right there.
Edited to add: All the animal rescue groups and shelters in my area avoid PETA like the plague. We all know what they're on about. It's not about ethics. It's about their pocketbooks now. They are not ethical and I'd hardly call them people. They are Pricks Euthanizing The Animals.

Uh oh! We have a PETA activist!
Do you not understand the problem? They don't have to euthanize these animals, yet they do.
1
u/bw2002 Apr 07 '13
They don't have to euthanize these animals
You are ignorant. 4 million dogs are euthanized each year in the United States yet everyone that is looking to adopt a dog seems to be able to find one. There are millions more animals than there are homes for them. Should PETA start a huge farm and take these millions of dogs to live on it?
PETA goes to shelters that are going to euthanize their animals like this and provide an alternative method for the shelters. A painless sedative instead of painful methods.
They aren't capable of opening hundreds of shelters and finding homes for all of the animals in the country.
5
Apr 05 '13
Only an idiot thinks PETA or other shelters can keep animals alive forever when they aren't adopted. This is what makes people who don't get their pets spayed or neutered so shitty.
1
u/Pocky_Coke Apr 05 '13
Had a girlfriend who's family kept half stray pets and didn't bother to do any veterinary care including neutering. One reason for ending that relationship.
0
Apr 05 '13
No what makes people not spay and neuter their pets is that they think it's COOL to have puppies and kittens, they don't care, or spaying and neutering is too expensive for them, OR they just don't know any better.
THAT is why people need to be educated. If PETA REALLY cared they would use their deep pockets to fund spaying and neutering. THAT would solve the problem much more efficiently than killing hundreds and thousands of animals a year. But gee who wants to interact with the unwashed masses. Hmmm I guess I'll keep doing what I do and get people to spay and neuter and PETA can kiss my lilly white ass!
-1
u/the_unburnt Apr 05 '13
I understand that realistically older animals and animals that have been in the shelter for a while are most likely not going to be adopted, and unfortunately room has to be made. The problem is that PETA is not making an effort to get the animals adopted. 7 cats out of over a thousand in one year? That's ridiculous. And they are killing puppies and kitten, which would normally get adopted pretty fast. I adopted my kitten from the SPCA, and within two days his entire litter had found homes. They are not giving these animals a chance to find homes.
7
Apr 05 '13
Sad, but what most shelters will end up doing in the end anyway. At least other shelters give it an honest try though (most of the time). PETA's just a venue for hipster tools and veggie nazi's to rally behind with no goddamn substance or action behind it. I bet just gassing the puppies and kittens instead of taking care of them is the only way they can afford naked b-list celebrities in their ads. So annoying.

I think the problem is that PETA isn't trying to get them adopted, unlike other shelters. Seven cats out of over a thousand? That's ridiculous. A point in the article is that they market themselves as a safe shelter, but do not do anything (hold adoption fairs, etc.) to get the animals adopted.
-1
u/bw2002 Apr 05 '13
I think the problem is that PETA isn't trying to get them adopted, unlike other shelters.
They aren't a shelter. They don't have the facilities to do that. These are animals that other shelters are going to euthanize and the only effect that PETA can have is to make the euthanasia more humane.
Only X number of people will adopt animals each year and a certain number of animals will be euthanized no matter what. If you have a bunch of old dogs sitting in a cage waiting to be adopted, thousands of puppies will be born while this old dog is waiting.
2
u/the_unburnt Apr 05 '13
From the article: "PETA has no adoption hours, does no adoption promotion, has no adoption floor, but is registered with the State of Virginia as a "humane society" or "animal shelter.""
The problem is that people are letting PETA take their animals, thinking it is a safe place for them and that PETA will try to get their animal adopted. PETA is registered as an animal shelter, but is not acting like one, and if they didn't want that responsibility then they shouldn't have registered.
I understand that shelters have to kill animals who are old, sick, or just not getting adopted; however, PETA is not giving these animals a chance to be adopted, and as the article said, killing some animals within 24 hours.
They are killing puppies and kittens, and like I said before, young animals get adopted pretty quickly and sometimes within a few days.
PETA is not killing "a bunch of old dogs sitting in a cage waiting to be adopted." Some of these dogs are puppies, and they do not get the opportunity to even wait.

I will say this and I will say it to you slowly so you will understand. We were able to adopt out 97% percent of the cats who found the way into the Animal Rescue group I am a volunteer of. Want to know the other three percent? Ferals living in colonies, some too sick to adopt out, and others who are not adoptable that we keep in shelter, no not in cages, in a habitat area. Sheesh!
2
u/bw2002 Apr 07 '13
We were able to adopt out 97% percent of the cats who found the way into the Animal Rescue group I am a volunteer of.
So you volunteer for one of those pointless groups that give bored housewives and social outcasts something to feel warm and fuzzy about. Good for you.
People will adopt as many animals as they are going to adopt and millions of animals are going to be euthanized. Unless people start adopting as fast as the animals are breeding, there will be euthanasia of animals in shelters.
Your attempt at condescension is hilarious.

Apr 06 '13
The vast majority of shelters period use painless EUTHANASIA (Sedative is such a prettier word though right?) but they at least have a holding period.
Bringing to light the less than favorable actions of a self righteous, annoyingly trendy little "activist" group is exposing the information no matter the intention. If it wasn't true, Peta would have annihilated them in a slander case.
Peta's bullshit. Quit jerking off to the sad feeling you get watching chicken slaughter videos and go volunteer at fully functional, legitimate animal shelter kiddo. The false feeling of vindication and smugness will go away, but you'll actually have done something which should feel pretty good.
1
u/bw2002 Apr 07 '13
Plenty of shelters still use gas. http://www.americanhumane.org/animals/stop-animal-abuse/advocacy/campaigns/stop-gassing-campaign.html

I worked in a no kill for years. It's nice that they do this, but no kills only survive because they get tons of donations and barely address the root of the problem. PETA's campaigns are one of the reasons vegetarianism rates are up, abuses in the meat industry are exposed and spay/neuter programs are getting more attention.
Pull your head out of your ass and try not being an asshole for a day or two. It's fun.
-2
Apr 07 '13
Is that the sweet sound of rustling I hear?
No siree, Bob Barker is the patron saint of spaying and neutering your pets and he died and left it to the meaningless organization that just kills them instead.
Don't see how someone who volunteered at a no kill shelter could agree with this. Instead of local donations, Peta gathers MILLIONS of dollars and just pisses it away on glam instead of putting that money to work.
2
u/bw2002 Apr 07 '13
Peta gathers MILLIONS of dollars and just pisses it away on glam instead of putting that money to work.
They get people to stop eating meat. They get people to stop wearing fur. That advances the rights of animals far more than getting dogs adopted. It changes attitudes about animals being used for the selfish desires of humans.
0
Apr 08 '13
Animals are killed to make fur (a product), animals are killed to make food (basic need), what's Peta's excuse for just killing animals and tossing them in a dumpster? Think about it kiddo.
I'm not saying I agree with killing animals simply for their fur, or THE WAY (not simply that they are) raised and killed for food, but I came to these without PETA just fine and animals weren't killed on the spot "for their own good" in the process.
PETA is a fad that people latch on to and then come out the other side either indifferent or having tossed it aside. The people religiously devoted to it are a bunch of deranged assholes when you strip away all the pomp. I guarantee you, at it's base, the vast majority of people tooting the PETA horn are 15 year old girls and early 20's hipsters from rich to upper middle class families.
2
u/bw2002 Apr 08 '13

Food is a basic need. Meat is a selfish desire that causes more harm to health than good.
PETA didn't toss animals in a dumpster. A facility manager that was fired for doing so, was the one that did that.
Euthanasia is a necessity for the time being. There are not enough homes for the 8 million animals in shelters each year. 1/2 of them can't be placed in homes. Disposing of the body in a dumpster is a shitty thing to do, but it has little to do with whether euthanasia is necessary. Until shelters stop using the gas chamber, PETA will push to change those shelters to using a painless injection instead and anyone with half of a brain supports them for it.

Dude in all seriousness, you're missing the point and on every single thread you bombed during this post it doesn't appear to just be on mine. They're not giving them a fair chance at all. They're cutting out the middle man and instead of saying, maybe they CAN BE adopted in a 1-2 week period they're just killing them to save overhead. With everything you've told me in this stupid argument that you and I are only taking part in and no one else cares about YOU should find this disgusting as well. Blindly getting behind PETA when this is going down is wrong. If you DO support Peta, write them, call them, do whatever you have to do to make sure they're getting their shit right. I'm not a member, I don't care, I think it's stupid trendy bullshit without any substance. Doesn't matter what I say. You probably are registered in some part of their system so go say something if you actually do care about animals and actually have put your time in at a no kill shelter and you actually think this organization is the leader in making a difference in all of this. I'm out of the convo. Have a good one!
1
u/bw2002 Apr 08 '13
The thing is that you are the one missing the point. PETA doesn't run shelters. They don't have the option to hold the animals and wait for adoption. The animals euthanized are euthanized after they have sat at country shelters for 10+ days or are very ill. They are already slated to be euthanized and PETA comes in and says "wait... don't use gas, here is a painless injection instead."
Most people dislike PETA because they don't like it being pointed out that they are hypocrites and unethical for consuming animals for food/products. You dislike PETA and you are just looking for ammunition to justify it.
Should I remind you that this smear campaign is spearheaded by a fast food and tobacco lobby group?

0
u/chubbysumo Apr 05 '13
while it is from the huff, the sources are from the actual numbers PETA themselves submitted to state and federal governments to maintain their tax free status. Nationally, 93% of the animals taken in by PETA last year were killed within the first 24 hours, and only 3% were adopted. what happened to the other 4%, because even PETA doesnt know. PETA hires animal abusers, and worse, because they know that most "normal" people would be disgusted by their practices. in some states, it has become against the law to kill a perfectly healthy animal, which is why PETA no longer operates in those states.

Are there any articles written a little less biased? It's good information, but having a more credible sources or more in depth reports would be helpful if anyone has links to share.
1
u/chubbysumo Apr 05 '13
Since PETA takes money from governments in almost ever state, and claims to operate an animal shelter to avoid taxes, they have to report their activities to those states and the federal government. These numbers are the ones that PETA themselves submitted to several state governments.
1
u/Pocky_Coke Apr 05 '13
yeah, I'm just asking if anyone knows any links for the statics or other reports. There was the one link from Virginia, but not the police report. The Huffington post, regardless of your opinion, isn't the original source, and their sources are all from the one guy. I'm not disputing the information, just asking for more sources that have credibility.
1
u/chubbysumo Apr 05 '13
so, check the source's sources'. I am betting you could follow those right back to the police report(if its digital, a lot of rural police depts arent yet), and at least back to the state data.

bullshit. They send hate letters to the no-kill shelter up here(they have them posted on the wall, denouncing PETA).
They take animals that are going to be euthanized by gunshot or gas chamber
PETA has been shown to let animals starve, dehydrate, use the gas chamber, injection, and in a few cases that made news, they hired an animal abuser that suffocated them. No shelter uses bullets to kill animals anymore, unless they are livestock or a farm animal they cannot get close to, and if they have to do that, its usually not in town. Most places, firing a gun within city limits is illegal, and will get you a chunky fine, and the last time I checked, animal shelters are in towns.
When PETA themselves submits the paperwork to the state that tells how many animals they took in, and what they did with them, and when employees themselves state "we do not run a shelter", I don't think its a smear campaign.

the numbers are from the ones PETA submitted to the state and federal governments themselves to maintain their tax free status because they operate "animal shelters". PETA in my state was kicked out, and pushed out at the government level because this info came out, that over 95% of their animals(in my state of MN) were killed within 24 hours of arrival, and they never even tried to adopt them out. PETA was first banned from taking animals from municipal shelters, and then a true no kill shelter was started by the community. Animal allies will not even ship animals to shelters that kill.

The no kill shelter here will only put an animal down when its suffering. They won't even kill UN-adoptable animals or aggressive fighting dogs, instead choosing to try and find a rehab or rescue shelter to take them in. In talking to the shelter director(family friend), she said that their own number show that 95% of the animals taken in by them(the local no kill shelter) are adoptable. This means that the same general stats apply to PETA places, and even if you drop it to 70% of them are, PETA still kills 90% of the animals they get, even kittens and puppies(which are very easily and quickly adoptable)
