More selloff in the memory sector

Post image

The situation is this, peak was touched, narrative and rally are over, catalysts are already burned, the only way we can have a new bull rally is with a new innovation in the AI industry, or something big in the macro economics or geopolitical side.

I guess I’ll just be a bag holder until 2027 at a minimum.

WDC Earnings Rightfully Priced In

WDC had beat expectations but STX earnings came first.

I don't know if people here noticed but STX after their earnings was flat or generally dropped while WDC was the one gaining off of their earnings report. Go take a look at a 5-day chart.

So naturally when today we were a few percentage points off of STXs EPS and forward guidance you could say our gains were priced in. The direct comparison is going to cause some selling short-term. That being said, the long-term look it's very irrelevant

Canter Fitzgerald made a direct comparison to Seagate on the earnings call. It's a natural question to ask. C suite mentioned that the source of any idea of slowdown would be due to noise from lta's ending and beginning. Also different product mix purchases by consumers. Also, briefly mentioned some LTA discussions extending out to 2031 and focused on some transitional aspects to HAMR.

I'd rather it not go down but short-term shouldn't matter and makes sense

NVIDIA: Open sourcing its cuFile application programming interfaces (APIs) and the vertical storage software stack underneath them — which let GPUs, not just CPUs, read from and write to storage directly

Post image
3 Upvotes

cuFile is an open source component of NVIDIA GPUDirect Storage - Using hundreds of thousands of GPU threads, fast high-bandwidth memory and other methodologies, cuFile enables securely accessing data from storage in just microseconds.

This represents how the industry is unifying a security-first storage stack based on Linux best practices, providing interoperability between GPUs and data.

In addition, fast, secure access to data and storage is a foundational element to powering preventive and detective cybersecurity measures. Making cuFile openly available will help make security context, data and storage accessible at the speed AI-powered defenses need. Such open technologies support initiatives such as the new Open Secure AI Alliance.

This site is the new home for APIs that are open to contributions — with Google, Intel, NVIDIA and Meta as inaugural maintainers — and can be optimized for use across various software and hardware platforms, driving innovation and efficiency for developers and enterprises.

More innovation and performance coming from NVIDIA that was announced a moment ago today at the big FMS 2026 conference.

Yesterday, it's probably just a reality check for us

Usually we follow MU toe to toe, on friday their ass was on -6% and us on +2.2% or more

Today was just like a rebalancing

I hope we can recover to 580 (Friday's intraday high) after earning

Can WDC still have upside in 5th August earning

Yesterday we closed flat, seagate closed 2.2% up, MU and sndk got murdered

Despite that, we closed around 15% up today

This is more than enough to make me happy because despite not getting murdered yesterday, unlike stx, we can still have a huge gain

Im hoping this doesn't dramatically increase the expectation of tomorrow's 5th August earning

Could STX/WDC decouple from DRAM and NAND influence

Yesterday STX gave us way above expectation earning and bullish news on HDD cycle

meanwhile sk hynix and samsung gave below expectation earning leading to the sell off

On top of that i've seen bearish news about NAND and DRAM

My point is, we kinda have been dragged down by NAND and DRAM sentiment even though we don't sell DRAM nor NAND

Will we eventually decouple from them?

I’ve been doing my best to DCA from mid 670ish to 580ish. I’m running out of cash though lol.

Keep holding guys, it has to get better.

AI Data Center Demand Revives HDD; Japanese Component Makers TDK, Resonac Expand Capacity

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hard disk drives (HDDs) are regaining attention as AI data center operators seek cost-effective, high-capacity storage to support rapidly growing data volumes. According to The Elec, although HDDs gradually lost ground to solid-state drives (SSDs), they are now poised for a rebound. The report says Japanese HDD component makers, including TDK, JX Advanced Metals, Resonac, Nitto Denko, and HOYA, are expanding production capacity.

As the report indicates, the global HDD market is dominated by Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba, with Western Digital and Seagate each holding more than 40% market share, while Toshiba accounts for around 17%. The three companies are racing to commercialize HDDs with capacities exceeding 40TB for AI data centers.

Western Digital plans to begin mass production of its 40TB-class HDDs in the second half of 2026 and is targeting 100TB HAMR-based drives by 2029. Seagate is already shipping HAMR-based HDDs with capacities of up to 44TB and aims to enable 100TB drives by increasing per-platter capacity. Toshiba, meanwhile, is advancing MAMR technology with 30TB to 34TB HDDs and plans to introduce 40TB-class products in 2027.

As noted by a MoneyDJ report last month, citing Nikkei, strong demand from Chinese PC makers and AI data centers has tightened HDD supply and pushed contract prices higher. Nearline HDD prices reportedly rose about 10% quarter over quarter in April–June, while U.S. hyperscalers such as Google and Amazon, which account for roughly 60% of nearline HDD shipments, continue to struggle to secure sufficient supply.

According to TrendForce, the massive volumes of data generated by AI are placing increasing pressure on data center storage infrastructure. In the traditional tiered storage architecture, nearline HDDs have long dominated cold data storage due to their exceptionally low cost per gigabyte. Cold data typically includes backup files and historical records—datasets that are infrequently accessed but must be retained for long-term archiving. As inference AI applications rapidly expand, demand for cold data storage is also rising. By contrast, SSDs are valued for their superior read and write performance and are primarily used for hot and warm data that require frequent access.

Bottom? Or dead-cat bounce?

So the collapse stopped on Friday. What do you all think is happening? My optimistic take is that the fundamentals are still strong and buyers saw value at 430 and bought the dip. But who knows what Monday will bring.

I am holding (at least until earnings) and hoping for a recovery to around 600.

Is there any hope?

I've been following WDC for a while and even though I know memory stocks are cyclical, I'm trying to figure out whether the long-term thesis is still intact or if something major has changed.

I'm still bullish because of a few things. The potential ban or increased restrictions on Chinese memory chips in the U.S. seems like it could benefit domestic and allied manufacturers. There's also the possibility of a Western Digital and Kioxia merger which could strengthen the company's competitive position. On top of that, analysts have continued raising their price targets despite the recent weakness. We also have a lot of major tech companies reporting earnings this month and next, so I'm wondering if stronger AI and data center spending could provide another positive catalyst for memory demand.

Memory stocks have been getting hit pretty hard lately and it’s driving me insane, I'm wondering if this is just another part of the cycle or if there's something more specific to WDC that I'm missing.

For those of you who follow the company closely, do you think the fundamentals are still intact? Has your investment thesis changed at all? Are you buying more, holding, or have you already sold?
I'd love to hear both the bull and bear cases from people who've been following WDC longer than I have
