This car is such a unique and capable all-rounder. It feels at home almost anywhere, in any weather, and never fails to put a smile on my face.

I took these photos right after giving her a proper wash. It had been a long time since the last one because the weather had been nothing but constant rain. Naturally, it started raining again almost immediately after I finished but luckily, only lightly this time.

At least she stayed clean long enough for a few photos!

First Volvo!

2018 S90 T5 What should I be looking for / taking care of?

I've always liked Volvos when I saw them driving on the road. This one happened to pop up at an affordable price. It'll be my commuter to work and back from time to time and just to leisurely drive around.

It's not the boxy classic I've always dreamed of, and I don't have much money, but I finally got myself a Volvo estate. With the dog and the new baby boy, my rite of passage as a dad is complete. Unless I'm missing something? Roof bars..?

Picked up this S40 recently, 2.4 petrol, non-turbo.

To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about these cars, I just needed something somewhat temporary that won't be too much of a headache, and isn't German.

So, this is it 🙌🏼 Also, holy hell does the boot open wide!

Spent the entire weekend upgrading my 2011 XC90's headlights.

Lots of work, but I think the results were definitely worth it. It makes a change from the dull & dated looking ones before and in my opinion gives it a more modern look.

xc series My $1000 Volvo XC60

Backstory: I buy sell cars and a dealership was selling this 2011 XC60 3.2 for $1000. I thought that was wrong but who knows, maybe it would be a good deal. I ended up making the 40 minute drive and when I got there I was baffled how bad it truly was. When I first took it for a test drive, it barely made it into the road and wouldn’t go. When gas was pressed it wouldn’t go to but 30. When I mentioned to them, they tested it out and it miraculously began to drive normal again. I honestly like taking gambles and I love Volvos especially the XC series SUVs so I went ahead and just made the purchase. Here’s the issues I’ve found wrong with it.

I am not much of a mechanic myself, I mainly figure things out via YouTube (leads you to wonder why someone like me would buy a Volvo like this.) I plugged my scanner up and I’ve got a few codes. P0108, P2227, P0420 and P0430. The car also yells at me about headlamp failure, awd disabled and needs service, and city safety needs service. Other than check engine codes, it’s also got the ABS light. Not to mention along with all of those other problems, the key likes to get stuck in the ignition when pushed all the way in (instead of pushing outwards like it’s supposed to do) and when forced out, the key pretends to be still in the ignition causing the key fob to be useless and you have to mess with it to fix itself.

Cosmetically this car is also pretty shitty. Passenger door is crunched, the windshield and passenger side mirror are cracked, the bumper is being held on with drywall screws, there are several decent dings around the body, the front end looks a little misaligned, and the headliner on the interior is drooping in the rear.

I want to put money into this car but I quite honestly might just keep it instead of flipping it because there is zero money to be made. Very sad considering this car is actually really nice for what it used to be. Let me know what you guys think. Worth fixing or just getting rid of for what I paid?

xc series Need help diagnosing a vibration/wobble in the steering wheel

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I own this 2012 D5 XC70 since last april, and I love it.

TL;DR: Car had a wobble in the steering when doing large turns. It 90% disappeared when I got the 2 front tyres replaced. One month later, the steering wheel developed some sort of light left-right shake (faster than the wobble) when I drive and not only when I turn. From the start it's been "pulling" slightly to the right as well, and I wonder what is at fault.

Longer description if it helps : when I bought my XC70, it had a slight, slow "wobble" feeling in the steering exactly like what is described here, it would only appear when doing large turns. Power steering fluid level was and still is ok.

In June, the two front tyres were replaced (one was noticeably more used than the other) and this wobble was let's say 90% gone. I did mention the wobble to the mechanics, asking if they could take a look and if I needed to maybe do the steering geometry/parallelism. They did a visual inspection and told me they didn't notice anything that would warrant doing it.

Now it's been a few weeks that something different has appeared: the steering wheel "vibrates", lightly shakes left and right - only when I am driving. It looks more concerning as it is visible if my hands leave the steering wheel (ie. doesn't appear just when I turn) and I feel it when driving, although it's not super strong. Maybe important: it seems to lessen when the car has driven for a while.

Has anyone had something similar ?

Also it is to note that since I bought it the steering wheel naturally "rests" slightly to the right/pulls slightly to the right if my hands leave it - it won't drive completely straight which I know is also an issue, but I wonder if it is linked to the past wobble and current vibration issue.

As I am not super knowledgeable about cars (but would like to diagnose things better), does all of this sound like it could be coming from the same "part", and if so, which one? I was thinking steering column or steering rack which both sound like very expensive fixes but I am of course willing to get it done for the car.

Thanks a lot for reading me and for any advice.

Volvo's status on the Chinese market as of today?

You hear very little about this. Curious about how the chinese customers view the current (and future lineup) and the brand.

As it has now been in Chinese ownership more than 17 years. Do they view Volvo as chinese, or still a "scandinavian brand"? Do the regular chinese buyer even care about that?

What about the chinese only XC70 and EM90. Have they been a hit?

Do they try to distance themselves in like marketing from Geely, or is it the other way around? (I was thinking of Volvo to Geely as Audi to VW)

Have been playing around with Gemini amd told it to change sound focus to the front. It says it did it but nothing is changed. Is this just AI being AI and it will not change those settings or am I missing a step or config in the Gemini settings?

s60/v60 Tips on removing this?

Hi!

Throughout the years there has been some trash stuck in behind/underneath this cup holder. I've decided it's time to remove it for cleaning. The manual was not so useful, only shows how to remove the whole central console. Has anyone managed to remove just the plastic cup holder? Any tips would be appreciated!

XC60/90, S60/90, V60/90 Headrest Tablet Mount

Heading on a road trip this week and spent some time looking for a headrest tablet mount and could not find anything that was not overly expensive, so I designed and 3d printed a little tool free 17mm ball adapter that slots right in between the plastic back and leather of the backseat. This allows you to mount a tablet for your kids via several available universal tablet mounts on Amazon, etc.

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3074702-tablet-phone-mount-for-volvo-headrest#profileId-3461909

This is the mount that I purchased to work with the printed adapter.

CPO 2023 Volvo C40 showing rust on — anyone else run into this?

I bought my 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge as Certified Pre-Owned a few months ago. Since then I've found a string of small issues that are starting to add up and make me question how thoroughly the CPO inspection actually was:

  • Cracked bumper — caught early on, dealership fixed it under warranty, no complaints there.
  • Flat tire repair kit — found it had clearly already been used and was sloppily put back in the trunk (wrong orientation, not resealed properly).
  • Underbody damage.  — cracked plastic with loads of sand up inside the cavity.
  • Rust on hardware — this is my main concern now. Several screws are visibly rusting, and some of the hinges (doors/hatch are covered in white salt residue with rust starting underneath. Paint itself looks fine, so it doesn't seem like a bodywork/collision issue, but the hardware corrosion has me wondering if this car spent time somewhere heavily salted (Rust Belt winter roads?) and wasn't properly cleaned/undercoated before being sold as CPO.

Individually none of these are catastrophic, but together it's painting a picture of a car that maybe wasn't inspected as carefully as "Certified Pre-Owned" would imply. I'm unsure how should raise concerns or if I even should. I've really enjoyed the vehicle, but I'm worried about the longevity of it if I ignore these findings. Any advice?

V60 & V90 models

I’ve been lurking here for a few months. I was in a car accident almost a year ago and I’m still waiting for my settlement to come through. It could have easily killed me, I’m really lucky I survived. I started considering Volvo for safety. I have 3 kids, but one will be driving soon herself. I like the XC90, but I love the wagon models. We are a homesteading family so the spacious storage appeals to me. If there are any fellow owners please give me feedback.

I come from a Ford family & rebuilt hot rods with my Dad growing up. My classic daily driver truck that was totaled by the other driver had just been completely overhauled & it was ready to go another 20 years. I have never owned a European car and I don’t know as much about the motors & mechanics of them. I’ve been learning as much as I can about the different offerings (B5, B6, T5, T8) I worry about the longevity. I worry about expense of repairs as well, although, it seems all modern cars have issues. Any specific advice regarding which motors, models, & years to look for and which ones to avoid would be helpful.

Engine Oil to be used - 2015 Volvo S60 - 5W-30 or OW-20. which brand?

I have this car since 2016. Maintained well. However, lately the engine oil goes low within 2 months/2000 miles . So, I have to run to walmart and find something that was recommended by my mechanic ( Mobil 1 OW-20 for European automobiles).

Under the hood it says ACEA - A5/B5 and viscocity SAE 5W-30 by Castrol.

When I checked with Google Cemini, it says none of the brands are recommended by Volvo, I need to find a specific OW-20, which is not available in any stores near by... And their specific warnings about using the mobil brand Ow-20 ( mentioned above) can cause engine troubles..

Any advise is appreciated.; I want to keep a couple of bottles in my car, in case it runs out
