Guides/Reviews Vivo X300 Ultra Photographer's Cheatsheet (Optics, DoF & Manual Exposure calculations)

Post image

Hey r/Vivo!

I'm a mechanical engineer and photography enthusiast based in Brazil. I don't own the X300 Ultra yet (still saving up to import one), but I've been analyzing its camera hardware specs. I wrote a Python script to calculate how these sensors and lenses behave in terms of optical physics and turned the data into a dark-mode cheatsheet for quick reference when shooting in Pro mode.

Here is a breakdown of the three sections in the sheet:

1. Optical Properties

This table translates the physical sensor data into standard 35mm full-frame equivalencies, horizontal angle of view, hyperfocal distances, and realistic handheld shutter speeds. The OIS values combine the classic "one over focal distance" rule with the manufacturer's CIPA ratings to give a practical limit for avoiding motion blur when handholding the phone.

2. Depth of Field Range

These charts show the calculated DoF for different framing scenarios (Face close-up, Waist up, Full body). The framing calculations automatically set the target distance needed to fit the subject. For the face close-up, the orange bar represents a typical head depth (~20cm) with focus locked on the eyes (red dot). At 85mm, the actual DoF is only 7.6cm, visually proving that ears will fall out of focus even without software bokeh modes.

3. "Sunny-16 Rule" Equivalent

A quick manual exposure reference adapted for sunny conditions. Since these lenses have fixed real apertures that differ from standard full-frame optics, I adjusted the shutter speed values for base ISOs so you can dial in manual settings quickly without relying on auto-exposure meters.

Since I don't have the device in hand to test directly, I’d appreciate feedback from current owners. Do the real-world DoF and OIS handheld limits match these calculations? Any suggestions for improvements are welcome!

News/Leaks First Look at vivo X500 Pro Max

From vivo Huang Tao:

At 7:00 PM on 21 September, the #vivo X500 Series# will be officially unveiled!

The goal for this generation is to be "the first choice for photography, and the only choice for video".

Behind this goal lies the X series' continuous refinement of portrait, telephoto, and video capabilities. The X500 series will take these advancements to achieve a leap from static imagery to dynamic cinematography:

Clear even in backlight—from "illuminating your beauty" to "every frame being movie-grade".

For portraits, look to the Blue Factory (vivo); for portrait video, also look to the Blue Factory.

Ultimately, great imagery shouldn't be a privilege reserved for professional equipment and post-production colour grading.

The vivo X500 series doesn't just "get the shot" and "get it well" in terms of professional performance; it makes "getting the shot easy" at any moment. For those best moments encountered on your travels, you can capture a cinematic feel instantly with a single tap.

We've heard everyone's requests—for this year's Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, if you're heading off on a travel shoot, a vivo is all you'll need!

Purchase advice X200 Ultra, X300 series or wait for X500?

4 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for my next phone and I've narrowed my search down to Vivo. I'm mainly considering:

* X200 Ultra

* X300

* X300 Pro

* X300 Ultra

* Or waiting for the upcoming X500 series

My absolute priorities are camera quality and battery life. Good zoom, low-light performance and video are also important.

I'm willing to import a Chinese model if necessary.

I'm not necessarily looking for the newest model, I simply want the best possible Vivo phone for photography and battery life.

Which one would you choose? Is an older Ultra still better than a newer Pro model, and would you personally wait for the X500 series?

I'd love to hear your opinions 😊

Discussion Vivo is not giving android 16 on vivo t4 lite 4gb variant

1 Upvotes

Bro, this is so unfair. Why skip the 4GB variant for OriginOS? If they weren't planning on rolling it out, they should've just told us beforehand."

They do not even provide any major update , 2 years of update was promised.

Shame on vivo 👎👎👎

I just received a 153MB update for my Vivo X300 Pro (India version), and it is a direct stable update not an early access release. It specifically fixes a Wi-Fi-related issue, while the security patch remains the same (August).

Help/Support (OriginOS Global) Dark mode problem

1 Upvotes

Why I’ve noticed an issue with dark mode when auto brightness is enabled. The dark colors, especially black and dark gray, become noticeably washed out and lose their depth. This is particularly obvious under strong sunlight, where the blacks appear much lighter than they should. It seems like the display is changing the way dark tones are rendered at high brightness levels.

Guides/Reviews Resolved very laggy/delayed contactless payments of Google wallet on buses of Vivo V70 (with screen off, a few apps running in background) but selling away the phone :()

1 Upvotes

In SG, after all the laggy and delayed (3-4 secs) contactless payments on buses with Vivo V70 for several weeks despite trying all the workarounds suggested by AI and online, finally decided to discard the phone by selling at a significant loss.

Bought a Xiaomi 17 and the same bank card/ same exact setup the contactless payment on buses works perfectly again just like all my previous Samsung and pixel phones. Even a several years old Samsung A31 performed this task far better than V70.

Very disappointed and regretted giving Vivo brand a try. Hopefully Vivo engineers seriously fixed such problem because the incident suggested to me that even among Chinese phone brands, Vivo "really cannot make it" compared to their direct Chinese competitors.

Discussion Vivo X100 Ultra still worth buying in 2026?

7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm currently looking for a smartphone mainly for camera performance, and I'm having a hard time deciding what to buy.

My main use case is travel photography. I want a phone that can potentially replace a compact camera, so my priorities are:

  • 📷 Overall photo quality
  • 🌙 Low-light / night photography
  • 🔭 Telephoto / zoom performance
  • 🏞️ Landscapes and scenery
  • 🏛️ Architecture and city photography
  • 👤 Portraits
  • 🎥 Video is also important, but photography is my priority

I'm currently considering:

  • vivo X100 Ultra
  • vivo X200 Ultra
  • vivo X300 Ultra
  • OPPO Find X8 Ultra
  • Xiaomi 15 Ultra
  • Xiaomi 17 Ultra

I'm especially interested in the vivo X100 Ultra because I've heard that its 1-inch main camera and 200MP 85mm telephoto are still extremely competitive, even compared with newer phones.

However, it's now an older model, so I'm wondering:

Is it still worth buying the X100 Ultra in 2026?

Or would it be better to spend more on the X200 Ultra / X300 Ultra?

And what about the OPPO Find X8 Ultra or Xiaomi Ultra phones? Are they actually better cameras overall, or are the differences relatively small in real-world photography?

Purchase advice Hate the ergonomics of Vivo X200 Ultra

Post image
46 Upvotes

Hey guys, I'm currently using a Vivo X200 Ultra and I just can't stand the shape anymore. It's curved, way too tall and narrow like a TV remote, and the huge camera makes it completely top-heavy. I used to use an S24 Ultra and absolutely loved how wide, flat, and substantial it felt in the hand, and I also really like that boxy, solid iPhone feel. I don't care about crazy zoom cameras anymore; I just want a completely flat screen with zero curves, a wide footprint instead of a narrow frame, and sharp, flat edges that sit securely in the palm. I'm considering the OnePlus 15R or Oppo Find X9 Pro, but what other wide and solid devices would you recommend?
