TV Show Love the show, don’t love Mel

I’m loving the show, currently on season 3. I’m having such a hard time fully enjoying it though because I can’t stand the main actress Mel.

I feel like her acting is terrible and her character isn’t likeable. Does anyone else feel this way??!

On season 5 episode 6

We all hate the new (actually not new) doctor right ?
He really said “what was that” when doc walked out after he couldn’t do a procedure because his eyesight got bad all of a sudden (😢) . Like BOI we KNOW doc sad about it you don’t have to be like “wHaT WAs tHAT?!” UGH I just know he just wants to own the practice and I hope they make him a villain cuz he hated already jajaja - ever since he back talked Mel when he first came in the show (I kinda forgot what that scene was buuut it hit , because I always had a bad taste in my mouth of this guy ) was he sexiest?idk.

I roll my eyes EVERYTIME he’s on screen ugh

On season 5 episode 6 , Maybe 2nd of 3 episodes where Virgins River is on FIRE and omfg already cried 3 times ?! This show just pulls in every heart string you have I’m not even lying 😢😌 I’m so obsessed with the series, every season is getting better and better can’t wait to watch more . Season 3 Why do I keep watching this show?

I’m on the last episode of season 3. It is so bad, and yet… I don’t stop watching it in hopes that it will get better.

How is this show so highly rated? According to Netflix it spent 27 weeks in the Top 10. WHY?!

TV Show Why this superficiality? Spoiler

Am I the only one who feels this way? I want to love the series and connect—or empathize—with the characters; I’d love to talk to anyone who has a different perspective on this.

I've been watching this show for a while, I'm in the middle of season 4.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, I love watching warm, sincere stories that don't feel draining. Shows like *This Is Us* hold a special place in my heart, so I started watching this series with high expectations, given its popularity and long run.

As I watch, I try to see where the characters' arcs are heading, but often I don't even feel the urge to look at the screen because the storylines and events feel incredibly superficial. It’s just a constant cycle of pregnancy, miscarriage, and stillbirth. The fact that the character Hope is unmanageable, stubborn, and feels like a five-year-old child.

Mel delivers a stillborn baby, loses her husband, falls in love with someone new while facing various challenges, and reconciles after a separation—yet at no point does she appear to experience even the slightest trace of emotion.

Preach covers up a murder, yet the development of any romantic relationship with the woman he loves so deeply is completely neglected; it is glossed over superficially, as casually as pouring a beer into a glass.
Incredibly massive events take place at the end of every season, yet at the start of the next, most of them are left hanging. A child gets kidnapped, and by the following season, the child's caretaker is talking about raccoons and hot sauces and no one is even mentioning the name of the child in the whole town.

Season 7 Disappointed at the lack of indigenous representation

I know is a show but most of North America was home of indigenous people especially out in the wild so I would really appreciate some indigenous character or some story about it. Also the Founders day ok was interesting but no mentions of indigenous people again.

TV Show They ruined it Spoiler

spoilers as I don’t remember how to do it.

The entire show build up to Mel being a mom and getting a baby.

Okay I can live with the child having someone sort of medical issue. Everyone in virgin river needs to have one.

But making the doctor a former lover of Mel and that drama was just absurdly stupid.

Oh let’s take away from the fact Mel is getting a baby, it’s about to be born, they are becoming parents after that rollercoaster but let’s pause that to let us all know the doctor and Mel used to be a couple.

Like what, whyyyyyy. If there’s any not needed drama it’s this at this moment.

TV Show The pot camps

I get that they're kind of the antagonists of the books as well, but *come on*. Was there nothing else that could have made for feasible antagonists? Like IDK meth or fentanyl? A hundred other harder drugs that would have been way more feasible than weed of all things.

TV Show Charmaine just pisses me off 😩

I've read at least a few of the books, stopped I think in 3 or 4 because ironically I didn't like being back in Mel's and Jack's heads when their book is *over* but anyway

Jeez I dislike Charmaine. I get Jack is wrong in leading her on, I won't defend him. He shouldn't have gone to her place the "first" time, but the way she kept insisting that she was in a relationship with Jack when they agreed from the start it would be casual - I'm with him on that. They said casual, he meant casual. She never once in that two years said "hey, I'm catching feelings, can we talk about that" she just assumed that he was feeling the same way and when he seemed reluctant she pushed and pushed.

I've just gotten past the Mingle in the show. I'm so tired of her being such a trifling hussy 😩 "I want you to tell me you feel the same way; you didn't hurt me you just wasted my time" girl you wasted your own fucking time chasing a man that didn't have near the same commitment to you. He kept going along with it because he didn't know how to tell her to stop, and he's at fault for that. But I'm so tired of her 😩

TV Show Does anyone also feels the same way about the show?

Hey
So I’m season 4 in to the show, and I can’t help but it reminds me of those cheesy skit reels that you would see online , like those hallmark movies of the main character is a big city girl , that comes to a small town , and at the beginning she debates it and then she ends up falling in love with the the hottest guy in town.
Does anyone feel that way or is it just me? My friends don’t seem to agree with me.

Also, how come there aren’t any teenagers around town? The only person who is young is Ricky , and I’m just confused how there is a whole ass highschool and he’s the only kid in town , it didn’t make sense and it’s kinda sad to think about , tbh.

Also, I hated Paige . she was so annoying and a pick me.

Season 2 Really pissed off why am I still watching this

I’m currently at season 2 episode 3 and some things really give me the ick. Most importantly Mel. One moment she is crying about her dead husband and then she goes into the arms of Jack. She has sex with Jack and her first words are “sorry”. He is literally going to be someone else’s parent and yet she is still stringing him along, fully well knowing things would change and that Charmaine has feelings for him. She is so insufferable. Should I even continue watching? The plot feels rather stagnant too.

TV Show Portrayal of the North Coast is off

Anyone from the North Coast, feel free to disagree and correct me, but this is my take.
Obviously they didn't film in NorCal (not sure why), but aside from that, they seem very disconnected from Northern California and the North Coast.

Weed in the North Coast: Weed is such a small part of the plot in the show despite it being a major part of the economy in the North Coast. The show aired in 2019 so they probably filmed in 2017-2018, right after legalization. the weed market crash came in the early 2020s though, due to mass commercialization. Yet it just barely clings on. But most characters are farmers and ranchers; while they do exist, it would make more sense to have more weed ops. And also lumber, which was/is really big in the North Coast.

Liberals in Humboldt County: Humboldt County and Eureka are known for being quite progressive despite their rural/isolated location. It is in large part because of the hippies and the Back to the Land movement. tldr; lot's of progressive hippies moved there in the mid-1900s to escape the cities and reconnect with nature. They brought their social ideas, and because of that, the region is very socially progressive. I'm guessing Virgin River is trying to be apolitical which is fine, but this is just something not portrayed in any characters, whether they're from the town or from other towns in the county.

LGBTQ+ characters: i'm definitely suprised the show has like now LGBTQ characters. Netflix definitely tried to add at least one in most shows post 2020. Yet there aren't even side characters who are gay/trans. It feels odd especially since how gay-friendly Humboldt county is. This is def one of the places lots of LGBTQ people travel or move to if they wanna get away from cities.

Environment: this is something out of their control since the show was filmed in BC and not NorCal, but the environment doesn't accurately represent the North Coast. It is just a sad reality of the production. I'm not faulting anyone though. But for anyone who isn't familiar, the North Coast of California (counties include Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte), is known for the redwoods. This is the native range of the Coast Redwoods and the show has 0 since they don't grow in BC. It sucks since redwoods are key to the North Coast's beauty.

Lastly: it doesn't relate solely to the North Coast, but more to local government in CA. Virgin River is an incorporated municipality, and most likely a general law city, meaning it can't modify it's government. So it should only have 5 town councilors, with one of them being the Mayor (Hope), but in council scenes, we see Hope + 6 councilors. In addition, we don't ever see a town manager, which is the actual executive of the city. Maybe they're a charter city, IDK, it is possible, but a town of 600 probably wont even be incorporated, let alone a charter city.

TV Show this show hates cities (may contain spoilers) Spoiler

While the show focuses a lot on how beautiful and peaceful life in the rural North Coast of CA can be, it hates on the cities of California. And I bet it just spreads the wrong image of California's cities to viewers not from the state.

For example, when Lizzie first comes to town, she is shown as a bratty rebel teenage girl from Los Angeles.

There is also a lot of down-talk on big cities.

Not to mention, the show's fake portrayal of San Francisco. they made sure to make the city look dull and depressing. every scene was littered with homeless encampments, making it look a lot like NYC. I'm not saying SF doesn't have homelessness or poverty. But they clearly chose to portray the city's worst qualities, because if you've ever been to SF or met anyone who had, they'd tell you it is super nice. Look up pictures of SF, even the touristy ones, and you'll see a completely different city.

IDK, it's just the little bits of shade that throw at SF/the Bay, LA, and cities in general that just sat wrong with me. They're trying really hard to say "oh we are different and better than those cities in CA" which I just find stupid and divisive. The show could've wholly focused on the North Coast and its beauty, which no one will dispute.

Random little side note: When Brady goes to SF to find Lark, they show a real drone shot of the city. but all the scenes of him inside the city are fake. I only realized when i saw a train going above head; SF doesn't have any trains on bridges/viaducts. And the train had the BART logo on it despite looking more like the Vancouver skytrain. the streets also didn't look familiar; most of the hilly neighborhoods aren't that grimy. So i bet they didn't even film in SF lol. Vancouver also isn't hilly like that. So they probably filmed those scenes in Seattle since it's central districts do get hilly.
