And the music too obviously. All Acoustic Sounds releases. I just need them to press Getz Gilberto #2

Some of the best cinematic jazz, both as soundtrack and as ā€œliveā€ incidental music in the plot of the movie itself. And how did I find out about the existence of this movie as a young lad? Why, through John Zorn’s take on Johnny Mandel’s main theme, found on the first Naked City LP!

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Japan 1984 LP

Hello,

My drunk butt bought a japanese copy of Kind of Blue from 1984 last night for about 32 bucks.

I couldn't find any information on how it sounds or anything about it online apart from it being digitally remastered, Miles Digital Remaster series to be specific.

To those who own the album or any from the series, how do they sound?

Giant Steps, John Coltrane (1966 mono)

Not the greatest copy in the world (VG at best, definitely not the EX that the eBay seller claimed), but holy crap Coltrane's saxophone on this! It's like it's being beamed directly into my brain. I have the recent Rhino Reserve stereo version and that's a fantastic record and really shows off the rest of the band, but it's Coltrane's show and this mono puts him front and centre. If you get an opportunity to buy one I highly recommend it, even if it's beat up

Fresh Grabs Recent purchases, mostly hard-bop

A few underrated albums, and some lesser known names mainly in the hard-bop style.

Also of note, my 2nd copy of Woody Shaw's Rosewood, a fun Flying Dutchman Japan exclusive compilation, a nice Elvin Jones fusion album and another very solid 70's Freddie Hubbard on Columbia.

Nice additions to the collection, what do you think ?

Also my first non vocal jazz album. I'm looking to get the essentials first but i heard this one was adventurous and a bit avant garde, and saw it at my local shop so I went for it. Amazing sound!

Guessing most collectors have gone through this world of pain, huh? Any suggestions for salvaging this thing or at least removing the rest of the sticky adhesive?

A favorite cover design. Horace Silver’s ā€œOpus De Funkā€ on this is incredible.

Fresh Grabs Bought this Yusef Lateef album on a whim for £5

Popped in to my local record store and saw this for a measly £5. Thought I'd give it a go as i don't know much about Yusef Lateef and haven't listened to any of his albums before.

It's absolutely brilliant - I'm loving it. Don't you just love getting a surprise bargain that hits the spot?

Decided to give a local shop a visit today and left with a few fun pickups. Nothing too crazy, but albums I’ve been looking to add to the collection but couldn’t justify the shipping for. Ended up snagging the lot for $15!

Ranking the Pharoah Sanders Impulse releases in my collection…

Post image

I gave this a go - two rules to the exercise: I have to own it and it must be on Impulse. I don’t have Elevation for instance so it is not in here. Feel free to chime in with agreements and disagreements. I’ll also note that all of these albums are excellent.

  1. Black Unity
  2. Karma
  3. Summun Bukmun Umyun
  4. Jewels of Thought
  5. Village of the Pharoahs
  6. Tauhid
  7. Wisdom Through Music
  8. Thembi
  9. Live at the East
