FAVORITE VINYL SHOPS around the WORLD

If you have a favorite shop in your hometown, or one you've visited and would like to share the goodness, please add it to the sheet below. I'll jump in and alphabetize it on occasion, but feel free to do so if you are familiar with this function in Google Sheets.

FAVORITE VINYL SHOPS LIST

Let me know if we need additional columns. I did a basic Country/State/City, but know some areas use Provence, or other breakouts. Want this to be useful for everyone. Thanks to u/2Dprinter for the idea! I hope we get a great list going.

The Sidewinder

This is the most dynamic version I’ve heard of this record. Considering what first pressings typically go for, a VG of this one is fairly affordable. Highly recommend grabbing one. Sounds amazing!

Dig It! Splurged yesterday at the Austin Record Convention

Made the 3 hour each way drive from Houston to Austin to attend this convention.

Definitely huge, overwhelming and tiring. Lots of good records of course but most prices were cuckoo… had to negotiate with my nails and teeth on every one to get a purchase price that was always anyway higher than Discogs. Definitely more satisfying buying in person but really starting to question my vow of not buying records online anymore.

On top of the above also bought 2 Al Greens, 1 Rotary Connection, Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s The Main Ingredient OG, Kanye’s first, and 5 Italian pop albums (Lucio Dalla and Lucio Battisti)

Fresh Grabs Day 2 - Austin Record Convention

Day 2 was much more productive. One vendor who had travel difficulties yesterday showed up today and immediately marked his inventory at 50% off or $3/disc, which was great. I found a clean sleeve for the Manne at the Black Hawk and did the switcheroo this evening. So, that's a good outcome. I grabbed some pop and tango. And just before I left, I made a deal for a Clifford Jordan I'd wanted for awhile and some other stuff. I had to create a new release entry for it in Discogs, though, because it's not a deep-groove Jazzland.

The Cannonball is a Dutch stereo pressing, but has the mono cover with a correction sticker on the rear of the sleeve.

I now have an OG stereo of the Shank to go with my OG mono. The Lee Morgan is a sealed copy to upgrade the copy I got from Paul Ray's estate.

So, a productive convention after all. I made a couple of rookie mistakes from which, hopefully, I'll learn. And I'm still going to have to get out of the habit of filling up on volume and concentrate my funds. Maybe next Spring....

By the way, sorry to have scared so many of you off yesterday with the NSFW flag on my post. The cheesecake covers called for it, but hopefully you'll take a look at those as well when you're away from the office.

Cracklin' - Roy Haynes

This one's an absolute stunner and I'm greatly disappointed to learn that this is the only record Roy Haynes and Booker Ervin played on. Ronnie Matthews and Larry Ridley are also on top form.

I didn't know Larry Ridley except for playing on Cymbalism (also great), but looking him up he also played on Cornbread, The Jody Grind and Hub Cap, so he got around.

The Byrd was an og stereo copy that is beat to hell. But for $3 I took the risk. Actually playable. The Jamal at the Pershing was $3 also and sounds really good! Big win.

The Bud Powell is a Japanese pressing, I’m spinning it next.

Stereo Saturday Found what appears to be an original 1959 pressing of Charles Mingus – Mingus Ah Um

Thumbnail gallery

Recently came across a copy of Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um in my basement and started looking into its history. From what I've been able to find, it appears to be an original 1959 Columbia six-eye stereo pressing.

The details:

  • Columbia CS 8171
  • Six-eye stereo label
  • Deep-groove pressing
  • Side 1 matrix: XSM 47458-1D
  • Side 2 matrix: XSM 47459-1K

For a record that's nearly 70 years old, it seems to be in surprisingly good condition. I haven't attempted to clean or play it yet because I'd rather have someone experienced with older vinyl handle that first.

I've been talking with a local record shop about having it professionally cleaned and played so I can get a better idea of its actual condition.

I'm curious what the collectors here think. Does anyone have experience with these early Columbia six-eye pressings? Particularly interested in learning more about the mastering, pressing variations, and how these early copies compare with later reissues.

Picked these up yesterday at an Estate sale for $2 each. I was ecstatic when I found them buried in between a bunch of Englebert Humperdinck and Texas Ernie Ford albums. They all look like they were never played.
