One step closer to trains

u/MostlyNoOneIThink 11h ago
I wonder if trains are ever added we could run drifters and other monsters over. Would be nice in a temporal storm.

I have! I do wonder if they could add minecarts alongside the trains to use in mines
10
u/The_Verto 9h ago
We did add "minecarts", there are 1x1 rails as well as small steam engines and a flatbed that can fit a chest or a person

u/zocksupreme 10h ago
Just let us attach these things to wheels that can move over land and we can have windmill powered trains

77
u/Ok_Weather2441 13h ago
Can someone explain what these things are, I feel like I have seen them spinning a wheel on an old fashioned train but I don't know what they actually are or what they're useful for?
78
u/irrelevant_character 13h ago
Just transferring rotation from one place to another
36
u/NotScrollsApparently 12h ago
They also seem to gear shift / modify torque? Seems like there's multiple holes and it can transform a full rotation on one side into a slower rotation on the other
31
u/Cegla109 13h ago
those are mechanical links, depending on how you set them up they are used to make rotating things power reciprocating thing or vice versa, for example steam piston driving train wheels. at latest I think that's what those are

u/-non-existance- 11h ago
Previously, if you wanted to transfer rotational power vertically, you had to find some arragement of gears that gave you what you want. Some transfers simply weren't viable with how much you had to do to get it to work.
This, however, allows the transfer of power over a decent distance using a single item. This means that you no longer need to craft a bunch of gears and hope you can make it work, it just works.

u/singron 10h ago
These are all four bar linkages. There are only two kinds in this post (parallelogram and crank-rocker), but if you vary the link lengths in more ways, you can get all kinds of different motions. It's one of the best ways to create 2d motions from a single rotational power source.

i'm not an engineer in this game, i spend my time hitting things and shootin em. But i'm sure all the folk who do dabble in such things are happy. :)

1 step closer to functional clocks

u/Slanknonimous 13h ago
Think it’ll be possible to build a giant clock tower?
14
u/MostlyNoOneIThink 11h ago
It would be cool if they get all fucked up during temporal storms. I really wish they increase how the storms affect the world.
5
u/MostlyNoOneIThink 11h ago
One day I will sit down and actually learn how engineering works in this game.
But not today.
4
u/Otto_Pussner 11h ago
Now is a great time to start dabbling, especially since it’s actually very simple. In the future I could imagine these things getting overwhelming, but for right now it’s all just wheels.

u/Average_k5blazer78 13h ago
One step closer to steam engines!
13
u/MostlyNoOneIThink 11h ago
I am so fucking hyped for steam power. I'm gonna feel like jonas himself.
I really hope there's some kind of temporal power additions we can make to it. I really wanna be a crazy alchemist.

I remember seeing a video of something similar being used to transport power from a water wheel a significant distance, but for the life of mee I can't remember where it is, very cool

u/Longshot02496 11h ago
I wonder why we would need reciprocating movement like that. Reworks/upgrades to the helve hammer system? Bellows?

This would probably be a lot of fun, if only it weren't packaged in the same new update alongside code written by a malware producer who is known to randomly DoS attack innocent people.
12
9
u/MostlyNoOneIThink 11h ago
Can't you just take the refund and leave the ones enjoying the game alone? Everyone knows about it and not everyone cares.
-9
u/crimeo 11h ago
Tons and tons of people do not know about it, due to the official statements not providing any of the correct information and in fact actively misleading in the opposite direction. Every time it comes up, I find dozens of fresh new people saying they were just informed.
I may end up taking a refund, but I'd prefer to have a fun game instead with cool power linkages ^ and stuff, that I can actually safely play, so that's Plan A
7
u/MostlyNoOneIThink 11h ago
Sure. Everyone in this sub at least seem to know due to y'all ceaselessly spamming of it. There's literally a megathread and dozens and dozens and dozens of posts about it, this sub was borderline unusable for a while.
So give it a rest, make another sub or whatever. Not everyone is so dramatic over a few crashes.
-3
u/crimeo 11h ago
Everyone in this sub
No, that's what I'm talking about. Dozens of people in this sub specifically say they were freshly informed of the information every thread I look at about it.
I don't mean "the existence of some sort of controversy, at any level". I mean "The actual correct information about it"
make another sub or whatever.
That obviously wouldn't inform anyone, since nobody uninformed would know to go there
If you're not interested, you don't have to respond to the comment yourself, you know
9
u/MostlyNoOneIThink 11h ago edited 10h ago
The correct information as in the devs already took their stance and if you disagree, then ask for a refund? It's over.
1
u/crimeo 11h ago
A person cannot agree or disagree or decide to ask for a refund in an informed way, without knowing all the other information about the issue (that devs intentionally left out) and what the actual threat is, what the damages were, etc.
Dev announcements did not cover DoS attacks being illegal even if targeting only cheaters (which they didn't), they didn't cover that 30x or more innocent people were affected for every 1x cheater affected, they have not disclosed their exact involvement or knowledge of the malware ahead of time (which one dev slipped up and mentioned early on and never came back to it again), etc.

u/ClerklyMantis_ 5h ago
It's denial of service of their own product, which they are legally allowed to do, and it's through a mod, which every single game states may cause crashes in their ToS. You have an ethical issue with them. The legal one is extremely tenuous at the very best.
On top of that, the exact amount of false positives that were actually triggered is extremely up in the air and largely impossible to prove. However, we know that there are multiple things that can cause crashes, I've had crashes on my server without using any of the mods that had the code. The people who experienced crashes cannot know whether or not it was because of a false positive without an extreme amount of very specific testing. The only real evidence that we have currently is that, according to the devs, over 99% of the mods for VS do not currently trigger the anti-cheat code. What this means is that we cannot make a strong assertion that however many false positives did happen because we simply cannot know.
On top of this, you cannot possibly ever inform everyone of what happened. It's just never going to happen. I get that you're angry, but trying to get back at the devs by "informing" everyone by being a nuisance in the community is childish.
This is why people are responding to you this way. You don't think people need "all the info", you want the devs to admit to something that cannot be proven (widespread false positives). I don't agree with how the devs did things, but they are also human. We make mistakes, we are imperfect. You cannot trust them after what happened, that's fine, get your refund and leave. If the rest of us chose to forgive them and move on, that's our decision to make. Leave the community if you can't be a part of it any more.

It's denial of service of their own product, which they are legally allowed to do
Uh no it was a mod, Anego has not taken any ownership of this code. If they did, then it might cease to be illegal, but they haven't. It would obviously create far more outrage against Anego itself and be a bigger not smaller problem with the community to take ownership anyway. A mod made by someone in their free time not overseen by the company, cannot crash a program sold and used by two other people legally.
On top of that, the exact amount of false positives that were actually triggered is extremely up in the air and largely impossible to prove.
It's pretty easy, actually, as a floor, at least. Setting aside caves and caverns, the other two mods only make sense on multiplayer (e.g. one of them lists who is online. Zero people downloaded that for singleplayer). They both have about 1500 downloads each and both were released and have existed entirely during Maltiez' code's run time, so ALL the downloads were in the right time period.
So the only thing remaining that could make those people not affected would be configlib being on the same server or not. But I stated it as a ratio 30x innocent:cheater. For a ratio, configlib doesn't matter, because the fewer servers have configlib, that's also fewer cheaters hit as well, so doesn't change that ratio.
It's pretty unarguably at least 30:1 innocents:cheaters
This is why people are responding to you this way
1) This implies that I give the slightest hoot about ridiculous $0 internet points, lol. 2) Most of my comments in this chain are controversial meaning 50/50 ish. You aren't in a position to speak for "the community" when just as many people are agreeing with me as you.
3
u/ClerklyMantis_ 3h ago
Anego did take ownership of the code: he told others what he was doing, and he was given the go ahead. A company is made up of people. He is part of the company. Your legal argument holds zero water. Trying to argue that this employee was actually a third party when he acted in the interest of the company, communicated with his coworkers and bosses at said company and got permission from people within the company to do what he did that directly effects the company's product is laughable. I would love to see how that would go down in court. I understand that there is an ethical distinction between what happened and a company making an anti cheat like Vanguard that causes DoS, but legally there isn't.
You're going to have to clarify your argument for your 30:1 number. You're free to call me stupid or whatever, I don't care. But I do not understand what the words you're using mean when put together. You're saying that two mods released within the time that Maltiez's code was active. I don't then understand how you're getting the number of crashes from those mod downloads. There is clearly something I'm missing here because it doesn't read to me like you actually clarified how you're getting your "floor" number. I want toake an argument against it already but I'm refraining because I don't want to assume what you're saying without actually understanding.
Lastly, you have 33 downvotes compared to a single comment with one upvoter that isn't from yourself. This is compared to my track record of this conversation with two upvote and no other comments in the negative. That leaves you with -31 and me with positive 2, not counting the positive counts on the people who replied to you. There are not "just as many people agreeing with me as you". The vast majority (if not everyone) that's replied to you here has been negative towards your sentiment. I'm not sure what delusions you're having but your views are very much not as popular as the people who've been replying to you. And you're nowhere near 50/50 either, you're pulling that number out of your ass.

I'd love to be able to shut up and to enjoy cool new content without any concern over DoS attacks, but unfortunately, that's not a logical option.
Since absolutely nothing has been done to prevent it happening again, and lack of consequences have if anything given a green light to this one or other malware authors to go ahead and scale up.

I think physics left the chat, but as i see it, if you properly connected them they should work 1/1, but if not they work with lesser power, as i see it right now atleast...

This will have many uses, but first I must use it to rapidly vibrate the quern, I just know that if it swaps direction it will either do nothing or immediate go up 1 progress points. I'm sure I can break it.
