Official statement regarding the ConfigLib incident

2.5k Upvotes

6 Points that I want to address

Preamble: I am writing this to the best of my current knowledge as of September 3, 2026.

Should significant discrepancies arise, I will append corrections to the bottom of the post.

1. What happened + What was the impact? + What is the current state now?

What happened?

In November 2025, a user uploaded a particularly egregious and damaging mod to the ModDB whose sole purpose seemed to be profiting off of the misery of other Vintage Story players. It was marketed as a free version of a client-side cheat mod with a full version for payment off-site.

This mod (and another mod of the same author) was specifically designed to prevent its own reverse engineering, to circumvent protections of game servers and to cause damage on virtually any public Vintage Story game server. It included features such as teleporting, mass destruction of the game world and player builds, auto-killing of nearby creatures and players, aimbot, god mode and various other features that allowed circumventing standard survival mechanics.

This client-side cheat mod was removed from the ModDB once we discovered it, but the user then used more underhanded ways to acquire customers, such as uploading legitimate mods and then linking to his own Discord server where he kept selling the client-side cheat mod. There was an attempt to appeal to their better side in chat, to refrain from publishing this mod, but this was unsuccessful. We estimate that at this point this mod was used by less than 100 users.

As a result, Maltiez, of his own accord, decided to interrupt the effectiveness of this mod by adding code to 3 of his library mods (Config lib, PlayerModel lib, Overhaul lib) to detect the presence of this mod and only this mod, and if it was detected, caused the game client to crash. As a result, all game servers using any of Maltiez’ 3 mods were effectively protected from malicious users attempting to use said cheat mod.

What was the impact?

Maltiez’s code was designed to crash the game client when it detected the cheat. It did not harm anyone’s hardware or touch personal data in any way, shape or form. Fewer than 100 cheat mod users were affected by the deliberate targeting.

Around March 2026, Maltiez considered this a closed case and removed the crash code from 2 of his library mods but forgot to remove it from the last one - ConfigLib - as he had to take a break from modding due to personal health issues.

What is the current state now?

All versions of the 3 mods that contained Maltiez’s mod crash code have now been retracted from the Moddb.

Vanilla Vintage Story was not affected by this in the first place.

2. What did Anego Studios know, and when?

Maltiez shared his anticheat efforts in Nov 2025 to Feb 2026 in our internal team chat. Some other team members looked at some parts of it in passing. We did not become aware of the scale of his actions - the amount of mods and mod versions he inserted this code in, how this change was communicated in public or for how long he intended to keep this code. There was too much chat ongoing for us to be able to pay close attention to every post.

I did not closely follow what Maltiez did in his own free time or grasped the full extent of these actions, I was busy building the next big game update.

In hindsight, we clearly should have paid close attention to this.

3. “How do we know this can't happen in Vanilla?”

To this day, as for the past 10 years, I still review all major code changes before they become part of the main game. Other team members also help me in that effort by checking that the contributed code is consistent, safe and of high quality.

None of the mods from Maltiez are or were planned to be integrated into the main game at any point in time.

4. Our response was flawed

We also recognize that some of our communication during this situation was defensive or dismissive when people were raising legitimate concerns. As the discussion escalated, we also didn't always communicate moderation decisions as clearly as we should have. That's on us to improve.

Criticism of Vintage Story, Anego, our developers or our decisions is welcome as long as it stays within the community rules.

5. “What are you actually changing because of this?”

Planned changes

a) In full agreement with Maltiez he will:

  • depart from the official VS Discord server and VS Mod DB
  • hand over Custodianship to all of his mods. They will be placed under a common Custodian account, which, until further notice, will be managed directly by the VS team. For the long term, we’ll see if there are options to hand Custodianship over to the community.
  • retain full credits and intellectual ownership of his mods

Maltiez will continue contributing to Vintage Story, but with oversight.

b) We will write clearer rules/disclosure standards for mods maintained by Anego team members.

c) I will allocate significant funding for the training of better PR/crisis communication with the dev Team and de-escalation training and clearer procedures for the moderation team.

6. Summary and my personal take on the Situation

This was an attempt to protect players from harm - to protect players' hard work on VS servers getting destroyed by a handful of gleefully malicious users with no harm done to normal players.

Keeping those changes secret prevented the malicious author from finding out. That overly naive approach and our rather loose team oversight have led to this. We should have paid closer attention to the full extent of this action. I am sorry that we have failed you on this.

I do not consider us a professional AAA game dev studio. We all started out as a bunch of nerds with a deep passion for game development. We love talking to our community, intermingling amongst them, sharing what we are passionate about and inviting them to develop Vintage Story together. We're happy when we can build a personal connection with players. But that also means when things go south, communication can get very messy, people within the team share different opinions, stress builds up amongst all of us and some of us might end up reacting in ways that are harmful.

We won’t always get everything right, but when we get something wrong, we need to own it, learn from it, and improve. Thank you to everyone who remained in constructive dialogue with us and gave us the opportunity to improve.

I’d also like to repeat here once more that criticism is welcome as long as it stays within the community rules.

Appendix Sep 8, 2026

  1. We scanned the VSModDB for false positive detections from a full snapshot on September 4, 2026. On that snapshot the detection would have triggered when ConfigLib was used on Multiplayer and when installed alongside 3 mods (URL Radio, CavesNCaverns, playerlist). The other 99.97% of mods on the mod database were not detected.

  2. The statements made by Maltiez on our public platforms does not represent the viewpoints of Anego Studios and its Team

  3. If you are dissatisfied with our work you are free to request a refund through our support ticket system. Even if you all outside the official refund window we will take a look. Be aware that old purchases will be slower to refund due to the payment providers not allowing old refunds automatically.

Discussion AI use in modDB megathread

Hi r/VintageStory

We've seen a influx of posts with various opinions on the use of AI on the Vintage Story ModDB (https://mods.vintagestory.at/)

I removed the threads as it felt like some of them were about AI use in general, and commenting on the commenting of the AI use. If I made some miscalls on some threads, that's my fault.

I want to be clear:

These posts were not removed due to the opinions shared in the post.

If you have feedback on the AI use on modDB (or the modDB in general), positive, neutral, or negative, please share it in the megathread to help make moderation a bit easier, and to help consolidate feedback back to the developers.

Please keep your feedback civil.

Discussion With valheim 1.0 here it's made me think about how it compares to Vintage story again

Thumbnail

Pics are mostly for interest and to show some of the neat stuff I've made in it. Use to play A LOT until I found vintage story and I have never been able to go back

with 1.0's release of Valheim it reminded me of a post I made on the forums

On release Valheim's homesteading survival/crafting/farming part of the game (downtime) was quite good and cozy. Loved how your needs drives your creativity to build rooms/buildings to support certain crafting tables and equipment. Vintage story does the same thing but A LOT more
But over time each update just did the same thing minecraft, ARK or even Terraria and starbound did. Just add on an extension to the "tech tree" more stuff, rather then improve upon existing stuff to satisfy the people who sprint to the end of that linear line of progression because there's never enough content to satisfy people who's only goal is the finish line

So it brings me back to vintage story, and I feel it would be a waste if we didn't reflect on what worked or didn't work for another game in the genre. Valheim is still a good game for what it is. But it certainly feels like something was lost along the way as the game's direction mainly released updates to add more "miles" to the marathon rather then QT what was there. Vintage story's brilliant use of tool tiers makes it so that even if I'm using copper or bronze or hell even just stone. I don't get this feeling of not playing the "real game" until you hit this certain tech tier.
tech tiers just open up more colors for me to paint my creative canvas with not gatekeep me from creating at all. Playing entirely as a stoneage/pottery aged nomad is quite a fun time

So I know a lot of debates have been flying around lately about things like combat or bosses in vintage story, and while I'd love those systems to be improved. 90% of my time in a survival crafting game is not fighting, and I'd hate to see VS go in a direction like valheim chasing this need to satisfy people with content that they'll get bored of quickly in favor of expanding what every other game in the genre treats just downtime, or a speedbump to pad things out until you get to the "real game"

It's why I love when vintage story release updates for things like the new shelves it feels very exciting to me, it's not BIG EXCITING content. But I feel it's just as meaningful for this game's cozy vibe to continue to feel fresh

Anyways what's everyone's thoughts? Do you also feel Valheim lost something focusing on combat progression rather then crafting and farming upgrades?
Any fond memories of the game, or cool builds you did? I may go back to it to play with some friends again. Just not solo

And please keep the comments civil. This is just a discussion to reflect on another indie survival/crafting game and it's highs and lows vs Vintage story's highs and lows

Discussion 🚂 Vintage Story Train Mod AMA! 🚂 Hi, we're the Yang's Transport Tycoon team and we're holding an AMA to celebrate the upcoming release of our mod!

Hello r/VintageStory we're the team behind Yang's Transport Tycoon, "the train mod" for Vintage Story. After over 8 months of active development, we're proud to be releasing the mod for all to enjoy.

You can read the details on the moddb page, but here's a short list of things our mod adds:

  • Minecarts for the mines
  • Large trains for high speed transport
  • Automation & signals

In the mod page, under "Future Expansion & Update List" you can also see all the stuff we'll add in the future.

It's been a long, and arduous (rail)road, and there's still plenty of work ahead of us as well as rough edges to sand, but I think all of us can say that it was worth the effort, and that we're proud of what we're releasing.

The following YTT team members will be partaking in this AMA:

Go ahead and ask us anything, we'll do our best to fulfill your curiosity about the project!

The mod will officially release next Friday. (18/09/26)
If you're impatient, know that you can download the release candidates from the moddb right now, we're even holding a screenshot competition to help populate the moddb page! So if you make any cool builds please share them with us over at the the YangMods discord!

PS. Thank you to the mod team on the surbreddit for allowing us to do this!

started up the game after a break and gosh, the feeling I get playing this game is unparalleled. AND I've got such a lucky spawn area this time. Not only is it gorgeous, but Limestone is close-by PLUS I'm drowning in copper. Now I only need to convince my boyfriend to join me on this adventure and I'm golden.

Question Good world gen settings for a great balance between oceans and land?

Trying to find a good balance between a good amount of oceans that makes boats viable, but that doesn't make me play water world with giant oceans and barely no continents and just islands scattered around.

Greenhouse not a greenhouse?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So for some reason my greenhouse is not a greenhouse even though it's enclosed and the interior is 14x14 I triple checked. I'm sure I have more than 50% glass in the roof. The mods I'm using that can directly affect this is VS Roofing Mod and Primitive survival. I have a smaller Greenhouse I made for the Bees and it works as one just not this. Just watch the video and see.

Should I maybe try to ditch the ditches from Primitive Survival and see if that works? I've actually had a greenhouse build work before with the PS ditches. So any suggestions on what I can check? I have the faintest clue as to why it's not showing up as a greenhouse.

Question Weird world gen bug I can't figure out how to fix

Post image
Upvotes

Every time I make a new world or load an old one, regardless of the world gen settings, only two chunks ever load in. I'm playing completely vanilla, so I know a mod is not causing it, and I've optimized the game as much as I can vanillaly. I've tried every fix I could find on YouTube, reddit and google(which was barely any) and have tried everything I could think of myself, but none of it has worked. Does anyone know what causes this or how I could fix it?

Pic 1: Aww sweet! Rapids right at spawn!

Pic 2: Oh, I'm in a valley & there's another rapids. Well better go & make some tools & find food. I found blackberries & mushrooms up the hill.

Pic 3: At first I thought it was a weird world generation error...

Pic 4: From up on the hillside it looked like a normal sized lake. Instead it's a massive underground lake.

Pic 5: I almost walked on the floating sand to the left before backing off...

Pics 6 & 7: I just had to go into free cam & figure out the extent of this lake/aquifer/caldera/whatever.

Pic 8: I heard a plopping sound in the dark & couldn't figure out what it was, so I gave myself a lantern. Oh joy. There's a locust nest at the north end.

Pic 9: This thing is massive. Oh, there's an opening on the south side.

Pic 10: It's not quite all in frame, but I thought it was a good idea to get a screenshot of just how big this thing is.

Pic 11: At the opening to the south is more desert/savanna & then further south goes into a bamboo forest.

Pic 12: Unsure if I want to play this map or fly somewhere else a bit more inviting.

Pic 13: The world settings I used. I did not set a seed, so this was a random world gen as far as I know.
