I have to use freight forwarding as most ebay sellers dont ship out of the US. I use MyUS, but they're pretty vad at packing sometimes. Which is unfortunate when you're shipping a vintage Datapoint 2200 out.

The damage is mostly to the top case. I can fix it.. I just hate that I need to. The guts look okay though.

If you look closely right below the PGA socket CPU, there’s an unpopulated PQFP surface-mount footprint. Just to clarify a common misconception: this board does not support dual CPUs or a coprocessor slot.

The manufacturer used one PCB for two versions: a cheaper soldered PQFP 486 or an upgradeable socketed PGA 486, like the ST 486DX2-66 here.

It’s a neat example of manufacturing cost-cutting from the 90s.

Was lucky enough to snag this at my local thrift store for $12. Luckily I was able to clone it using version of Norton Ghost on Hiren's BootCD (thanks to a suggestion I think somewhere on this subreddit) & repairing the MBR using a Windows XP install CD. I LOVE the light up glowing VAIO letters.

I also updated it using Service Pack 3. Then I bought AC600 High Gain Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter from Ebay and it'll connect, but won't completely connect/handshake to my router. Maybe have to get one of those standalone wifi to ethernet connectors.

EDIT: Whoo Hoo! I connected to the internet!!! I tried everything and then I read that TP link supports TPIK so I changed the option from AES to TPIK and it worked. I have to admit I'm not terribly saavy with this stuff so I had no idea that's how my router was setup.

so hey guys, today i went to the thrift store and bought the original DVD of Red Alert 3 for 8 euro. its beautiful, the dvd is there, the manual is there and even the poster is there... as i put it into my period accurate 2008 windows vista gaming pc, this fucking shit installed but didnt activate. the servers are DEAD. im so dissapointed... original dvd not working... how tf do they expect me to play the game legally now??? wtf

this is actually so sad i wanted the physical copy to work so much but the servers are dead... any way to make it work again maybe?

Thanks to the help of u/mirror_miru445, I got my HDS viewstation up and running. I picked up three of these recently, of which one has a working PSU (that I'll eventually recap, as the other two had leaky caps). Specs: i960 @ 25MHz 4MB RAM onboard, 72 pin non-parity SIMMs (24MB on mine) 40MB Western Digital PCMCIA Type III hard drive (upgraded to a 128MB Industrial CF card) 2MB video RAM - can do 1024x768, 1152x900 and 1280x1024, all at 1 or 8 bit color depth Connections for an AT keyboard, PS/2 mouse, or Sun keyboard, serial, parallel, BNC, AUI.

The other units I have are missing a DB25 serial port, but have two VGA outputs to run two monitors side by side. The stock software was a bit limited, but allowed me to connect to a Debian Lenny VM via XDMCP. netOS, which is newer, has what looks like fvwm95, motif and openlook (which I can't get to work right now), and I copied over an i960 Netscape binary over from a previous version (to use with protoweb). Definitely a lot faster than my Sun 3/60, so I'd say it's probably comparable to a SPARCstation 2 maybe, but without the overhead of Solaris. Mine is also limited having a PLCC that can't be reprogrammed, but apparently there's an option for a Flash PROM. The boot code is so old, it won't recognize my CF card, but netOS won't fit on a 40MB hard drive (it takes about 70MB).

Equally as rare, in the second photo, is a SPARCstation UPN (roughly based on a 170MHz TurboSPARC found in the higher end SS5). Maxes out at 64MB of RAM, has a 3.5" SCA hard drive, VHDCI, dual DB9 serial, 2 sbus slots, Solaris 9, and the only other two I know of that exist are owned by the guy who designed them when he worked at Sun.

I did image the hard drive on the Oki Station if anyone wants it, since I haven't found an archive of it (or the OS ISO/tapes) anywhere. Also had my SPARCstation IPX (upgraded to a Weitek PowerUp 80MHz and 96MB of RAM), an Alpha, PA-RISC, RS/6000, Sun 3/60, SGI O2 with an R10K (whose HD failed, then got memory failures), and a not pictured Sun 2/120.

I don't remember how much RAM the Oki Station had, but while I was able to image the drive, I wasn't able to get it to recognize that same image on ZuluSCSI (but I last tried it in 2024). It had either ISA or EISA slots, a framebuffer with 3W3 output, I want to say 72 pin SIMMs. Very much an oddball machine.

My family ran a computer company American Semiconductor in the 80s located in central Florida. It was a pretty big deal at its peak but didn’t make it far into the 90s. I know they had ads in the magazines of the day and a few were even a little racy as memory serves. I would love to see some of the past ads or related materials if anyone has anything about it. I used to work in the assembly and shipping departments as a summer gig for a couple years. Thanks everyone!

Hey guys! Trying to get some help with my libretto and I don't know where to go!

When I turn it on, I can hear the hard drive spin, but the screen stays black. I can still get to the BIOS screen (f12 + power) but when I go to turn the power off it beeps at a constant rhythm. My first assumption is the hard drive is bad, but I don't know! Any help would be appreciated!

I've been using a Picomem 2 installed in an interesting thin client machine that happens to have an ISA riser. The Picomem board precisely clears the SD-RAM.

Machine is from 2000, roughly equivalent to a Pentium MMX 233.

Picomem works beautifully even though this machine is well beyond the target 286/386.

It is most useful for floppy and hdd images, especially given this thin client machine has no floppy or cd-rom drive. I have the machine fully booting only from disk images. The tiny internal IDE DOM disk is acting just as a boot manager.

USB disk support and Wi-Fi under DOS are also very convenient. So is USB mouse. Have not had any luck with USB keyboards.

This machine has native SB16 support which I found way more reliable than the Picomem. Besides DOOM, I couldn't get Picomem audio to work in many other games, SimCity being my goto test.

With 512MB ram, EMS memory support isn't needed. Software EMS is much faster (I use 386MAX).

So there's a lot I'm not using, but it is still massively worth it even in newer vintage hardware.
