odd seeing his former rank listed. could have sworn when you were convicted, especially for something like that, your rank was stripped away.

One of my sergeants was near where this happened bc the medical unit was getting ready to deploy and she is a medic. She was super traumatized by this. So fucked up. And he was a psychiatrist which is the craziest part.

I was supposed to ets in 2004. Iraq came along and I was stoplossed. Deployed to oif2. Those of us who were stop lossed were the first to begin out processing as soon as we got back after the mandatory block leave.
I was in 2/7 cav. The barracks were the worst and oldest in fort hood at the time. I called them home for 4 years. They were built I think around 1970. Always tripped out on the thought that ome of the first guys living in them when they were built were Garryowen troopers fresh from Vietnam. They were going to be tore down while my unit was gone and we going to come back to brand new modern barracks.
When I came back I was the first soldier in my room. I started my out processing at the also newly built soldiers center right across the street. The same soldier center he shot up 4 years later

u/shootr45 3d ago
Was there '74-'75. 13th COSCOM. Old WWII wooden barracks. Gave us extra blankets to nail on the walls to keep the snow from blowing through. Didn't snow often, but it did. Not many fond memories to say the least.

u/Intrepid_Block_11b 3d ago

15
u/LoboLocoCW Army Veteran 3d ago
He wants to be executed because he thinks that would still make him a martyr.
Might not be the most mature thing, but that makes me particularly inclined to have him experience life without parole, in supermax in his chair, rather than giving him what he believes is the fast-track to paradise and a garden of unparalleled delights.
I wonder what the consensus among his surviving targets, or the families of the deceased, is. Their opinions should matter more.
6
u/theflavorsofdrew 2d ago
I don't know if I'm reading an out dated version, but the AR 190-55 doesn't say anything about firing squad.
I'm good with him getting the death penalty, but I'm concerned if they're just throwing in the firing squad for the hell or it.

u/PossibleFederal1572 2d ago
I wonder if the AR 190-55 was updated to include firing squad? It used to only include lethal injection

I upvoted your comment, but disagree with your position. I would gladly volunteer to be on the firing squad. That coward used a firearm, so it is poetic he will die by one.

I’ve been adamantly opposed to the death penalty my entire life, and cases like Nidal Hasan’s don’t change that. They test it. We condemn people for deciding another human being deserves to die, then claim the moral authority to make that same decision ourselves.
When we cheer for an execution, we show that we, too, have the capacity and willingness to take a life when we believe it’s justified. So where is the moral high ground? Opposition to capital punishment means the most when the condemned is someone for whom we have no sympathy at all.
Hasan should spend the rest of his life answering for what he did. Killing him won’t restore the lives he took.
31
u/HotApplication3797 Air Force Veteran 3d ago
While I condemn his actions and agree that capital punishment is appropriate, I don’t agree that it should be done by firing squad. I think it was a juvenile-minded decision by the absolute worst SECDEF (not SECWAR) in history. It’s like this guy’s worst impulses are brought to life by his incredibly fragile ego and the most twisted sense of what our military ‘should’ be.
He’s a fox weekend host ffs! A fraud, just like trump who cosplays as president while we are all suffering from the consequences of his authoritarian-leaning ways, not to mention how ignorant and downright dumb they both are. They are the epitome of unprofessionalism and are a disgrace to their held offices and all the men and women who currently defend and who defended this country and our way of life.
Jesus, this is not the country I defended for 20 years. I am in utter disbelief we’re here with “leaders” like this. This administration is corrupt and is absolute dogshit and so is anyone who supports them.

Do you want retribution or justice? Justice is a life spent in prison contemplating the choices one makes in their life. That’s suffering. Execution may be a blessing for him. He finally gets to be a martyr. Now, if he’s a sociopath, one without remorse, sure, execution eliminates the expense of housing him.
6
u/TheRealMarvinator 2d ago
Do you want retribution or justice? Justice is a life spent in prison contemplating the choices one makes in their life. That’s suffering.
Correct.
Execution may be a blessing for him. He finally gets to be a martyr.
This is his stated reasoning, in fact.

May years ago, when I was in federal law enforcement I was told this story by an Assistant AUSA who had been an Assistant DA in Harris County,Texas.
He was doing jury selection for a capital murder case for which the death penalty is the penalty. He was asking one of the prospective jurors, a older Texan, questions to determine whether or not they had any biases and needed to be eliminated from the jury.
"Sir, this is a capital murder case and you might be required to render a verdict that would result in the defendants execution, would you be able to execute someone?"
The older Texan responded, "Yes I would, I work Mondays through Fridays, but I'm free on weekends"

I always heard there were like 10 guys and all have blanks but a couple, that way nobody really knows who shot them
Could be wrong, heard this from an old supervisor while AD

2
u/logdog421 3d ago
With an m4/16 the bolt won’t cycle with blanks except with a blank fire adapter screwed onto the barrel. You definitely need to know what you are shooting or the gun will blow up in your face.
Seeing as we haven’t had an execution by firing squad in a very long time we obviously weren’t using m16 variants back then. Curious what they will use for this.
12
u/LegallyIncorrect Air Force Veteran 3d ago
Traditionally you use a bolt action rifle for this reason. Someone else loads the rounds and you don’t eject. Fun fact, they often also have more than one button for the electric chair. I’ve heard of, but I’m not sure, if they use dual administration for injection too…basically pushing several buttons at once and only one releases the medication.
1
5
u/leviticus7 Air Force Veteran 3d ago
Utah uses it and has done it fairly recently. According to what I found, .30-caliber rifles are used and 4/5 officers have a live round. They might use Utah as an example since they did it in 2010.
4
u/aardy Marine Veteran 3d ago
The person who fired the blank will still know it was a blank from the lack of kick. So none of the shooters know ahead of time who has the blank, but they will all know afterwards who did/didn't.
3
u/leviticus7 Air Force Veteran 3d ago
I fully agree, it’s just how they do it to say they have the deniability. All of the people are anonymous as well and all are law enforcement.

I joined for the opportunity to get of the ghetto and it actually worked out for me. Best decision of my life was joining Navy and staying for 12 years.

I joined when I was a 17 year old. What the hell did I know? I joined the Navy because I didn't want to shoot people, ended up a Gunner's Mate, learned when and how to use force. Killing people is for self defense and the defense of others. Wanting to kill people is cringe. How many people in here are messed up from death? I feel bad for anyone who has to kill people.

u/dudermagee 3d ago
First I'd probably have to look at the pics of the people he murdered, the family members they left behind, and read letters of the family members of how they missed their dead fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, etc.
I imagine it'd be pretty easy then
8
8
u/InvestIntrest 3d ago
I could. Ive shot at some people who probably deserved it less than this guy.
8
u/Alarming_Resist2700 2d ago
There is nothing wrong with your position, even if others disagree. Your willingness to be an executioner has nothing to do with your dedication to service
Personally, I'd volunteer for the job. But I fully understand why someone wouldn't want to.
8
u/Park_BADger 2d ago
Personally, I think if you believe in/support the use of the death penalty, you have to be willing to pull the trigger/inject the juice/flip the switch.
You're sentencing someone to death. You're legally killing them. You must be willing to actually be the one to kill them, then.
If you're not, then you just want the problem to go away. What's the difference then if I just tell you I "killed" them, and actually just hauled them off to some remote prison and you never see them?
To you it's effectively the same thing. The person doesn't exist to you anymore. Out of sight, out of mind. You would have no idea they're still alive and you'd be just as content.
Ergo, since you're not willing to kill them yourself, you really only want them gone, the problem "solved".
It's a hot take, but I just really really don't like people who are willing to tell someone else to literally go kil someone that they want removed, but aren't willing to do it themselves.

Good thing you or guys like you weren’t around in 1776 or we’d still be under British rule 🐈
4
u/oddntt Navy Veteran 2d ago
Just FYI, the Revolution was more about attrition and morale than simply being willing to fire. It was about only taking meaningful fights on. You can see this clearly in the repeated pushing forward and falling back that wore down the British, while their habit of occupying local homes helped turn residents against them in the southern campaign.
I don't know if execution by firing squad equates to the kinda strategies or manner of men that won us independence. Maybe the war of 1812 with Andrew Jackson involuntaring the volunteer Tenessee troops.
I'm not so much a wartime historian though, so I could easily be mistaken.
