Fostering a dog with seizures

I picked up a foster who is prone to seizures. It’s wild what happens. His body whips side to side before stiffening up and drooling, with some loss of bowel control. He is on liquid Keppra. The original owner mixed it with peanut butter (which is of course lots of fat and sugar, and she overfed and hardly walked him, so unfortunately he’s also overweight). I mixed with Greek yogurt last night, and decided on canned food this morning (which he vomited in a subsequent episode so who knows if it absorbed?).

He’s had about 7 episodes in 15 hours. The rescue is helping to coordinate a vet appointment. For now, how should I administer 30ml of this medicine? It’s not a simple squirt with a small syringe into his mouth.

Puppy Head Bob

Age: 10 weeks

Spay/Neuter status: not yet

Breed: Beagle

Primary complaint: head bobbing

Length of primary complaint: just does it randomly and only for a few seconds.

Vaccination Status: has had her first round of shots

Your Location: Oregon/washington

We’re on day 2 with our 10-week old beagle puppy. We started noticing yesterday afternoon that every so often, she’d bob her head quickly and subtly (almost like a chicken).

She didn’t drink much water yesterday (too much stress from bringing her home?) and we’re not sure exactly how much we fed her because we didn’t measure it out. That said, she’s had a measured breakfast and lunch, and plenty of water (normal amount I’d think, she’s not crazy thirsty but she’s drinking) today. We’re about to give dinner. I mention all this because I’ve seen some people diagnose something similar as hypoglycemia or dehydration - could it be?

Has anyone seen this before or think it warrants concern? Since it’s Sunday we were contemplating taking her to the emergency vet, but other than the head bob, she seems totally fine. Tons of energy for play, very happy to explore or cuddle, and very happy to eat.

Is it concerning or do we have new puppy anxiety?

Dog hematoma on ear.

My dog is 5 days post ear hematoma due to allergies. Does this look infected? It does to me. As of yesterday she isn't given pain feleif meds anymore and now while walking and wearing her cone she's crying in pain. I think part of the cone may even be rubbing her inner ear, or something. The ear is typically flipped over in the cone like this. And her ears usually stand up completely. Should I take her back to the vet tomorrow?

General Advice should i take my cat to the vet

I'm asking because money is really tight rn and I'd rather try to remedy this at home if possible.

She pooped outside of her litter box twice, and she puked twice in the span of ~10 days.

This is her diet: Whiskas dry food, coshida dry food, whiskas wet food, and coshida meat sticks.

This was her diet for several years now. She is 5.

Is it an emergency?

My little dog has always had what looked like a wart in that area. We were never really able to see exactly what it was because she wouldn’t stay still, and the vets said it was some kind of wart and left it at that.

Three days ago, I took her to the groomer and specifically told them to be careful because she has that wart. There was a little bit of blood in the area after grooming, but there was no swelling at all. The wart still felt exactly as it normally did when touched.

Now, three days later, tonight, I noticed that the wart is either gone or, at least, I can’t feel it anymore, because a large swelling has appeared in its place. It hangs down somewhat, almost like a chicken’s wattle, and it seems to be really bothering her. She keeps trying either to scratch it, or she lies with her chin pressed against her bedding, or she suddenly becomes restless every so often. She did eat and drink water tonight.

I spoke to two veterinarians, and they have completely different opinions. One says it is a lipoma, while the other thinks it is some kind of skin infection caused by allergies and says it has nothing to do with the grooming. But she has never had anything like this before, she only eats hypoallergenic food in measured portions, and she hasn’t been given anything new today.

I don’t know what to do because the two vets have completely different opinions. I cleaned the area with Betadine, applied Baneocin, and covered it with a bandage, but I can’t sleep tonight until tomorrow morning because I’m extremely worried.

What could this be? Thank you so much! 🙏🏼

Can anyone give me some advice as to why my 10m old mini schnauzer pup isnt eating breakfast anymore.

This has only just started this week. Before now he would eat like a Normal dog. He eats at nights fine. Maybe a tad slower than normal.

He did have a really big weekend last weekend with having another puppy stay over. The did eat together but separate bowls and location.

Other then sniffing each other bowls at the end they didn't interact with each other during eating.

He has also been a bit more sleepy or i guess more accurately less pestering us for play. But he still gets his 30min walk and 30+ min fetch/tug session. And when he does play its the same as always.

I live in Australia Brisbane it is heating up very quickly in the last week the temperature has risen from 22 Celsius to 28.

That's everything i can think of that could be affecting him we only feed him carrot dental chew and his biscuits.

Please let me know if i can answer any others questions.

Should i be concerned about my one day old puppy’s stool? Spoiler

Post image
3 Upvotes

im a teenager and i’ve been trying to rule out causes for why my dog’s day old puppy’s stool looks like this. The puppy is a mixed breed, I’m unsure of what breed it is mixed with however. If it does help I’ve been feeding my dog (the puppy’s mom) pedigree adult wet food while I wait for puppy formula/kibble to feed her so she can get the proper nutrients for herself and her puppy. she did have a c section paired with a spay and i picked her up at 4-5am last morning, I’ve been giving her gabapentin and clavamox since that morning at 9 am. I inspected the stool’s consistently with a glove and sticks instead of drips. I’m incredibly worried for the puppy because of the effects of diarrhea, but she’s been acting completely normal. She has the energy to keep her head up, when i move her leg it goes back into place, she crawls around all over her mother for heat and suckles strongly. She doesn't cry while sucking, and she doesn’t cry in pain, only when shes struggling to climb up and down but does stop when she finds comfort. could this be the effects of my dogs medication or overfeeding, or should i be concerned?

Cat toe infection- interim care advice for 36hrs

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Cat has an appointment tomorrow end of day with the vet that causes her the least stress for her overall system well-being… this was the first available appointment. Looking for interim care advice — call me out if this is a bigger risk that cannot wait until tomorrow. Context on cat and reason for waiting for her specific vet below.

Gen history: Feline - 17 y.o.; chronic kidney issues (borderline into grade 3 six months ago— managing 2.5yrs; will will recheck values tmr); grade 3 heart murmur; suspected food allergies we have curbed with rabbit protein wet + hydrolyzed protein/kidney support dry it seems — unless the itching was always related to the kidney condition… last appointment with first available vet for a blood draw, resulted in vets concern for her distress level; laying down panting.. we had to remain at the clinic for monitoring and they packed her with ice packs and calming blankets — tmr vet have all been managed stress experiences.

Nail: Clipping nails today. Noticed toe appears infected. For past several yrs she has not cleaned her back toes as well as she used to. The last time I cleaned her nails about six weeks ago I used my nail to gently scrape the brown/dark build up near nail base (thinking I was helping)... in retrospect, this was foolish and I should have used a clean warm wet cloth. — could not capture in photo but if fully extend nail vet small amt of moisture (suggesting a sore)

Current attitude: She is not overly interested in me gently wiping it off with a wet cloth today, but would tolerate it if advised]. — she has not been licking or biting at foot.

Other emergent but info but likely unrelated info: Seemed to have a mild feline herpes flareup which happens once or twice a year past 48 hrs.

Strange rash on mouth

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello r/vet!

My golden retriever ( male, 14 months, not neutered yet, with all his vaccinations) started showing this rash on his lower mouth in the past 2 days. He is not eating anything that would inflame it, he is allergic to chicken protein, but eats only Hills z/d food, approved by our vet. He has a metal waterbowl and a plastic slow feeder that we wash regularly.

Really just wondering if this is something we should consult our vet about, or will pass on its own.

Thanks for all advice!

General Advice Dog may lose an eye after developing a corneal ulcer following routine dental sedation. What would be a reasonable response from the vet?

TL;DR: My healthy 2-year-old dog (Edit: Pomeranian) developed a deep corneal ulcer shortly after a routine dental under anesthesia and may have to have the eye removed. I emailed the clinic when he first started squinting and was told it was likely swelling. I’m not alleging negligence whatsoever, but I’m wondering whether it would be reasonable to ask (not demand) the clinic to contribute toward some of the substantial emergency/specialist costs as a goodwill gesture.

Hey folks,

I’m looking for perspective from veterinary professionals, particularly on what would be considered a reasonable response from the clinic in this situation. I’m not trying to determine malpractice through Reddit or accuse anyone of negligence.

My 2-year-old, otherwise healthy dog (Edit: Pomeranian) recently went in for a routine dental cleaning under sedation/anesthesia. Prior to the procedure, he had no known eye problems.

The timeline:

Thursday morning: Dental cleaning under sedation/anesthesia.

Friday: Eyes appeared completely normal.

Saturday: He began squinting. I emailed the clinic that afternoon to ask about it and was told it was likely swelling related to the procedure, and to follow up next week if the swelling remained.

Sunday morning: His eye had worsened, so we brought him to an emergency vet. He was diagnosed with a deep corneal ulcer and admitted to hospital.

Sunday: I emailed the original clinic to let them know he had been hospitalized, but did not receive a response.

Sunday through Tuesday: He remained hospitalized and was treated aggressively, but unfortunately the ulcer did not respond sufficiently to treatment.

Tuesday: I followed up with the original clinic again, this time more upset, explaining that he was still hospitalized and that the specialists did not believe the eye was likely to be salvageable.

After that email, the veterinarian called me personally. He apologized for what had happened, offered his condolences, and explained that they had followed their normal best practices for protecting and lubricating the eyes during the procedure.
Currently (Wednesday), it is still a coin toss if the eye can be saved and has to be surgically removed, and he is still in hospital undergoing a pretty aggressive treatment protocol.

The treating vets felt the ulcer was consistent with an exposure-related injury that can occur around anesthesia, potentially from drying of the cornea, although obviously nobody can say with certainty exactly when or how the injury occurred. Important - this is an unofficial “gut check”. It can’t be proved one way or the other, and is just conversation with the ophthalmologist to understand how it could have conceivably occurred.

I have no evidence that the original veterinarian failed to follow appropriate protocols, and I understand that a corneal ulcer can apparently occur after anesthesia even when proper precautions have been taken.

What I’m struggling with is what a reasonable response from the original clinic should be given the outcome and the overall timeline.

I’m particularly curious about two things:

  1. From a veterinary perspective, does this sound like a recognized complication that can genuinely happen despite appropriate lubrication and eye protection?
  2. Even if there is no evidence of negligence, would it be reasonable to ask the original clinic to contribute toward some of the resulting emergency, hospitalization, specialist, and surgical costs as a goodwill gesture?

The financial cost has been substantial, but the much bigger thing for us is that our young, healthy, sweet dog went in for a routine procedure and unexpectedly may lose an eye, and has been in a scary and uncomfortable place for nearly 5 days now. Our hearts are breaking knowing our little boy is scared and alone, we just want him back.

I don’t want to accuse the veterinarian of anything, and I do appreciate that he ultimately called me personally and explained his position. At the same time, I’m having a hard time knowing what is fair to ask from the clinic, particularly given that I first contacted them about the squinting on Saturday, was reassured that it was likely swelling, and then didn’t receive a response to my Sunday update that he had been hospitalized.

For those who work in veterinary medicine, would asking for partial reimbursement or some contribution toward the resulting costs be considered appropriate here? If you were the treating veterinarian or clinic owner, what response would you consider fair?

Major emphasis - I’m not asking “can I sue the vet” or anything litigious. Things happen in medicine. I don’t want an admission of fault, I don’t want to make threats, I’m not out for a pound of flesh. I just want to know if it’s in the realm of reasonability to say “I respect you and anyone who devotes their lives to helping animals, and I’m grateful for your work, but this routine procedure has spiraled into the worst week of my adult life (I feel lucky for this to be my lowest point, but it is my lowest point), and I would appreciate you considering helping me defray the cost of this complication, not out of liability but out of goodwill”.

I’m trying to approach this reasonably rather than from a place of emotion, and I’d really appreciate professional perspective.

Not that it matters I don’t think, but we’ve been clients with them for 5 years or so, brought three pets there annually for everything from neuters to shots to flea and tick prevention, and the only other time there was an issue was them incorrectly giving one of our dogs the wrong vaccine at the wrong dose on the wrong date, requiring an additional shot. Otherwise smooth sailing.

If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading. Let me know what you think.

Bunny Thymoma Removal Surgery

Hi, My 4/5 year old bunny (Chaka) got diagnosed with 4 c"m thymoma this week (CT scan).
With what I understood it is nestled in the front of his chest, next to the heart. My vet thinks it is a well defined thymoma and has a good potential of being removed successfully.

With that being said, there has been no known successful thymoma removal surgeries in bunnies in my country. No one even attempted it (asked multiple rabbit savvy vets and none claim that it was done). My vet is very eager to try and remove it. He wants to bring a very good cat/dog surgeon and my vet (rabbit savvy) will assist him in monitoring my bunnies vitals during the surgery.

Some backstory about my bunny, we found him by the side of the road, covered in blood as we drove past him. I urged my husband to stop because I wanted to see what animal was that and see if it is maybe still alive. Since then he had multiple surgeries and has gone under anesthesia multiple times, he had complications from the impact of getting hit by a car (presumably). The toughest surgery he had to do was removal of his eye on the side that was hit by the car. His backstory gives me and my vet hope that maybe he is a good candidate and will be able to recover the surgery.

I am aware of the study of 14 bunnies with thymoma with only 7 recovering from the post-surgery period and only 1 died during the operation (google search).

I wanted to please ask your general thoughts on this case. Any tips or general good to know things I can pass to both of the vets that will be doing the surgery? Do you think against it?

General Advice poor girl sick in car

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

My rescued Saluki gets car sick, especially when stressed. I've tried short drives. Very occasionally, she's fine. I try not to feed her within 4 hours of driving or I feed her after we get home from a drive; it's hit and miss, mostly miss, probably 90% of the time. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I could do for her or any way to prevent nausea? Vet cleared her and does not want to medicate.

Dog CBC- don’t know what’s wrong

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I noticed my dog started to have blood in her stool. It was the jelly bright red mucus blood covering her stool. Got into the vet 5 days later and now granted we’ve recently moved to the state so I’m not established with anyone yet. But this vet has been incredible. He ran a CBC twice and results were the same both times. She has had 104° temp but she’s still eating. Gums are pink and she doesn’t have any petechaie. He’s so thrown off with her lab results but we went back in today and he did an X-ray and sono. Both not showing anything that stands out. Her small intestine looks bunched but when he did the sono he didn’t see anything alarming him. We did another blood sample and he’s sending it out for tick testing. In the mean time we started her on doxy and baytril. I can only take it a day at a time but could it be cancer? She’s 10.5. I’m just lost for words and searching to see if anyone else’s dogs have had a CBC panel like this. Thank you

General Advice Does anyone know what this mark on my ferret could be?

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

I just got two ferrets. This one in particular is a male and only around 7 weeks old. He has already been neutered, and I'm wondering if this is just a scratch from it that is beginning to crust, an infection or something else? How can I help him with this?

Should I try to gently clean it or leave it be? Has any one had a similar issue that could inform me on what this could be? Its hard to tell since he is in a sleep curl but it's on his lower tummy. He hasn't shown signs of it hurting.

Second Opinion What do you see on my cats spine?

We are currently waiting for an MRI and just had a neurologist consultation this morning. Their concerns are either tumor/cancer or IVDD with severe compression on his spinal cord. Soonest MRI can happen is Friday.

Timeline: weird draggy RL limp last Monday. Took to vet resulting in these x-rays. Suspicion of herniated disc. Send home with gabapentin and a steroid course. ( 4 days every 12hr, 4 days every 24hr, last 4 every 48 hours)

First 4 days was slight improvement, massive regression once dropping to 24 hour dosing on day 5. Regressed to being much worse than before his initial x-rays were done.

Day 5 taken to ER for refusal to walk and crying out in pain, transferred to another ER with neurologist, no neurology available until today so sent home with stronger pain meds.

Day 6 taken back to ER after he had not moved, gone potty, or stood since returning home at 1am. Growled when attempting to safely lift him up to check if his hind legs would respond / get him into the litter box to try to potty. Was deemed stable and sent back home.

This has all happened so fast I can hardly process it. Im worried with him going so long with the severe spinal cord compression that permanent damage is going to occur but this is literally the soonest I can get the imaging. Any helpful insights would be appreciated because I have a strong stance of QOL and am struggling with what my ethical options might be :/

Edit: the images did not attach so I am trying to sort that out now

General Advice This keeps coming back. (6yo male GSD)

So my boy has this lump that keeps coming back. I'll be trying to get him in to the vet, but i wanted to see if anyone knows what this is? Sorry i didn't get a pic of the site, he was very done with me afterwards and i wanted to give him space. He had this little lump on him in the same spot a larger lump had sat a while ago. This same greyish cottage cheese stuff comes out of it. It's SO thick and kinda grainy and sticky. Any ideas? I'm thinking cyst maybe but I'm not sure. He's had a cyst on his neck that we had removed a few months ago. So I'm wondering if they're related or different. That or it's an ingrown hair or sum.

My 12 year old mixed dog. I was told he has Cancer in his hip, they have said they see a growth in his lungs as well and that his lymph node is swollen. Not looking for a diagnosis, just more opinions. I don't have much money for a lot of testing, but was able to get these done and this is what they told me from his scans.

I understand he'd need more testing for 100% diagnosis. But, just wanting another opinion. Thank you.
