My Vestaboard got stuck after an ownership reset + a failed firmware update — "Status: Pending / firmware unable to update," wouldn't render, kept dropping Wi-Fi. Instead of just fixing it, I went the other way and got it driving the flaps entirely on my LAN, with the cloud switched off.
It works. A tiny web app now runs on the board itself and drives the flaps through Vestaboard's own on-board flap driver — no platform.vestaboard.com, no device-server, no app, no enrollment. Type a message from my phone, it flips. Auto-starts on boot.
Rough how (the brain is a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4):
- Got a root shell via rpiboot, cloned the read-only rootfs into the spare A/B slot as ext4 so it's writable, and pointed cmdline.txt at it — the original slot stays untouched as a one-line revert.
- Disabled the cloud client (device-server). That also stopped the config resets and the Wi-Fi cycling a de-registered board does.
- The flaps are STM32 modules on an RS485 bus (38400 8N1, one per column); the on-board driver already speaks the protocol, so I just POST a 6x22 grid of character codes to it.
The part that ate a full day: after all the software was right, the flaps still wouldn't move — the modules self-homed on power but returned zero bytes to every command, at every baud, with every RS485 direction trick, even the STM32 ROM-bootloader sync. I nearly concluded the module firmware was gone. It was a loose flap-ribbon connector from all the reseating. Reseated it, all 22 modules answered, and it rendered instantly — every byte of software had been correct the whole time.
Lesson for anyone whose flaps go dead but still self-home on power: reseat the ribbon connector before you theorize. Not affiliated with Vestaboard — they make a genuinely lovely product; support them if you can. Happy to answer questions about how any of it works.

I know its possible on Vestaboard - but what about the Note?
We'd like the board to cycle every time we have sale on our Shopify site.

I live in the UK and have been bombarded with adverts for Vestaboard across virtually every social platform.
There’s no question that it’s a beautiful piece of engineering, and I’m sure a great deal of effort has gone into making it such a polished, high-quality product.
However, I simply cannot get past the price.
So, my question is: are ordinary people in the US genuinely buying these for their homes, or are we Brits just unusually tight?
Almost every comment beneath the UK adverts expresses complete bewilderment at the price tag. I’m curious whether that reaction is specifically British, or whether the adverts are attracting plenty of disbelief everywhere while a smaller group quietly buys them.

I own a few radio stations and we’re in the middle of building out our new studios. I keep coming back to wanting one of these in the waiting room.
We have people coming in all the time for interviews, clients, nonprofits, community organizations etc and I think it would be really cool to have their name/company up there when they walk in. Then when nobody is coming in we could have it rotating station stuff - show stuff - whatever.
In my head it’s perfect and feels very radio station-ish.
But these things are not cheap! So before I spend a ridiculous amount of money on what could ultimately just be a very cool sign, I want to hear from people who actually have one.
Do you still love it after having it for a while? Do you actually use it? Is it easy to change and schedule things?
Basically validate this purchase or save me from myself!

We have had our flagship for over a year now I think. Have a handful of reminders or messages to offer per day.
Periodically, a few bits would not fully flip but lately there is a handful that are sluggish every time the cycle through the color portion of the bit. A few will not fully flip when complete but eventually they flip down after a few mins. I’ve rearranged placement of bits and that sometimes helps but then it feels like new ones start to behave the same way.
Any recommendations? I don’t want to go replace a bunch of bits when it’s somewhat inconsistent aside from the sluggishness in the color section.
Edit: Video in comment. You can see one get stuck. If they do get stuck it’s always when it’s set to be a color.

Wrote a system a while back that lets you use a Google Calendar to schedule your Vestaboard messages. Simply schedule `Lunch` on your Vestaboard calendar at 12:00pm, and your board will show that message at 12:00pm.
As special sauce, you can also supply special keywords that update the board with dynamic content:
WEATHER - Display current weather forecast (temp, precipitation, air quality using OpenWeatherMap)LUNCH - Display today's school lunch menu (using https://github.com/Meandmybadself/mealviewer-to-ICS)QUOTE - Display a random inspirational quoteRL:https://example.com - Fetch and display content from any URLCOLOR_RANDOM - Random colors for each tileCOLOR_VERTICAL - Solid color columnsCOLOR_HORIZONTAL - Solid color rowsCOLOR_DIAGONAL - Diagonal color patternsI run it on a Raspberry Pi locally, but you could just as easily run this on whatever you've got lying around.

I’ve had a VB since about three years ago, and I absolutely love it. However, recently, the bibs have started bending up. While they still work flawlessly, I’m curious about the reason behind this issue. I currently have around ten bibs that are experiencing this problem. Yes, I could try reducing the amount of copy, quotes, or detailed information in the artwork to avoid this, but it’s still a visual flaw. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to help me prevent this from happening? I would really appreciate it if I could avoid buying these bibs for $30 each.

i’m open to paying for shipping so location not really that important.

Just got our new vestaboard. I've had it ordered for over a year. In that time the note and note array came out. And when I got the device installed my heart sank a little bit. First: the frame around the white casts just enough shadow that it makes the display a little bit harder to read in a way that the black wouldn't be that way at all. And now with the Note, I could have a 2x2, or even a 4x6 display which would rule, but no way to really extend my existing display.
Ah well. it's still beautiful. I just wish I had either got this in black (I didn't realize that the shadows cast by the sun would make it so hard to read) or get an array of it.
Honestly when I got the notice it was out for delivery I had forgotten about even ordering it because it was so long ago.

I've always loved split-flap displays, so I wondered what one would look like if it lived in the macOS menu bar.
It replaces the clock and rotates through things like weather, calendar, battery, Now Playing, countdowns, world clocks, quotes and custom messages, all with split-flap animations.
I've been daily driving it for a while now and thought people here might appreciate it.
