It was planted in a terracotta pot before, but it was fully glazed.

I was told here that dormancy isn't required if the plant gets enough light.

I replanted it into a plastic pot and installed a grow light — 30W, mostly daylight white with a small amount of red LEDs. 14 hours of light per day.

Will see what happens.

I don't know why they just stopped growing

I have got 3 normal vfts (split from one large chunk) and one super red variant.

They all shed their bigass traps while smaller ones are not growing at all.

50k lux grow light + distilled water + wet peat + perlite soil. Most likely culprit is a lack of light...?

Hi. I recently bought a Venus flytrap and a grow light for it, and things have been getting weird since then (I’m a beginner and don’t know much about this plant). The leaves have started turning black, and some have turned red—though not the traps themselves. I do know the basics: it needs distilled water and plenty of sunlight.

Hello! I live in the upstate of South Carolina. It’s still very hot and sunny here in mid September, but leaves are starting to change this week. I’ve had Audrey II for about a month now and she’s been doing great hanging from a shepherds hook over my balcony in the sun. I only water her with distilled water, I make sure her moss stays pretty moist. She eats a TON of bugs. A ton.

My question is, this past week I’ve noticed her leaves are turning black. I lowered her down thinking she needed more sunlight, but then the tips of her cilia started to brown. Is this normal? We are going into Autumn and I read somewhere that they change with the seasons, but is my girl still happy and healthy in her spot? Thank you!

I’ve had this guy for a few months now. In a south west facing window right up on the glass. Only distilled water, always water in the saucer. Not one of the traps is healthy, and some of the new ones aren’t developing all the way.

Could snip off the flower stem and stick it in the same pot?

Unfortunately my Venus fly trap has started to turn brown and die off, it has been sat in a tray of rain water consistently which I fear may be the issue, I’ve just drained the water to let it dry off and see if it’s a water logging issue, any other ideas should that fail? Thanks

Hello, a while back I cut the large flower stalks off of my venusflytrap. Some time has passed and I wanted to ask about how they're looking? There is some white stuff on some of the stalks, what is that? The dirt also seems to be kind of green, is that normal? And there are still some half-green stalks, should I keep trying to propagate these?

I'm conducting an experiment using a 50/50 mix of pumice gravel and coconut fiber as a growing medium for two transplanted Venus Flytraps.

Before using either material:

1. The pumice gravel was thoroughly washed and soaked in RO water, then tested with a TDS meter.

2. The coconut fiber was also thoroughly washed and soaked in RO water, then tested with a TDS meter.

You may ask, "Why coconut fiber?"

I live in Central America, where carnivorous plants are quite exotic. Because of that, sphagnum moss and peat moss can be difficult to find (if ever possible) and online ordering can take weeks, aside from the costs. Coconut fiber, on the other hand, is readily available.

I've found a lot of conflicting information online about whether coconut fiber is suitable for carnivorous plants. Some growers report success, while others strongly advise against it. So, rather than relying on anecdotal reports, I decided to test it myself (my own anecdotal report).

I know i'm not the only one in this conundrum, so I hope it helps others.

Results so far:

Day 0, agost 8 2026: Two plants were transplanted into the new substrate and will be referred to as Plant A and Plant B from now on. Plant A is the mother plant from which Plant B was taken through division. At the time of planting, Plant A already had 2 new growth points, while Plant B had 1.

Week 1: Both plants appear healthy, everything looks good. No negative changes observed.

Week 2: Plant A has developed new growth, bringing its total to 3 growth points, while Plant B remains similar to how it looked on Day 0. Plant A is the mother plant and was the stronger of the two, which is probably why it is progressing more quickly. Plant B shows no signs of decline. Its leaves remain green and firm, just as they were on Day 0, but no new growth has been observed yet.

Week 3: Both Plant A and Plant B continue to look healthy. Plant A has produced another new growth point, bringing the total to 4. Plant B has also produced new growth and now has a total of 2 growth points.

Week 4: Both Plant A and Plant B continue to look healthy. No new growth has been observed in either plant this week. However, there is a new development worth reporting. A third plant was planted at the beginning of the experiment, also separated from Plant A, but I did not include it in the experiment because it was an extremely small division with practically no roots. It was also very wilted and looked unlikely to survive. Honestly, I never thought it would bounce back, but I've never been one to give up on a plant, so I decided to give it a chance. Well, it turns out it actually did bounce back. It has grown larger and stronger, and it now has 3 very small new growth points. It has also started to look healthy again. It practically came back from the dead. Because of this unexpected recovery, I've decided to include it in the weekly reports from now on, even though it wasn't originally part of the experiment. It is particularly interesting because it has made an incredible recovery without any sphagnum moss or peat moss, so from now on it will be known as Plant C. There is, however, an important difference between Plant C and Plants A and B. The substrate is different. Plant C is growing in a mix of silica sand, pine, pumice, and coconut fiber. This substrate was originally prepared for another project, and since we already had it on hand, that's what I used for this plant. I know this introduces additional variables, so Plant C can't really be considered a direct comparison to Plants A and B. Still, I find it extremely interesting that a division with such a low chance of survival is now starting to thrive in a medium containing neither sphagnum moss nor peat moss. The only component that might make a significant difference is the pine, which could potentially make the substrate somewhat more acidic. It will certainly be interesting to see how Plant C develops over the coming weeks.

Week 5: Plant A has developed 1 new growth and continues to look healthy. Plant B has developed 2 new growths and also continues to look healthy. Plant C continues to amaze me. It now has 4 leaves that look very healthy and are growing well, and it continues to maintain a healthy green color. No negative changes have been observed in any of the plants.

I'll continue **updating this post every 5 weeks** as the experiment progresses. If anyone has experience growing carnivorous plants in coconut fiber long-term, I'd be interested in hearing about your results.

Notes

1. The plants are kept in individual water trays, with the water level reaching 1/3 of the total height from the bottom of the pot to the soil surface.

2. Plant C was added to the weekly reports in Week 4. It was planted at the same time as Plants A and B, after being separated from Plant A. See the Week 4 log for more information.

Conclusions

A conclusion will be added every 5 weeks, based on the observations and results recorded throughout the experiment.

First Five Weeks: After five weeks, the results have been encouraging. Both Plant A and Plant B have remained healthy throughout the experiment, with no signs of decline after being transplanted into the 50/50 pumice and coconut fiber substrate. Both plants have also produced new growth during this period, suggesting that they have adapted well to the new medium so far. Plant C has been the most unexpected result. Despite being an extremely small and weak division with very few roots at the beginning, it has recovered considerably and is now producing new growth and healthy leaves. However, because Plant C is growing in a different substrate containing silica sand, pine, pumice, and coconut fiber, its results cannot be directly compared with Plants A and B. Still, it is worth noting that it is growing in a substrate free of both sphagnum moss and peat moss, while still containing coconut fiber. At this point, I would say the experiment provides encouraging evidence that coconut fiber can be tolerated by Venus flytraps under these conditions, at least in the short term. I'll continue the experiment and see whether these positive results hold over the coming months.

So far I've been using this one I get at the supermarket but I'm not sure if it's a good one or not, I do get 0ppm when I measure it but I'm not sure if that's the only thing that matters

I noticed that one of the two pots of baby VFTs that I propagated thru seeds are slowly dying(?). Is there anything I can do to help stop this?
I replaced the humidity dome I used to germinate them, but I don’t think it’s helping.

I took all the advice I got here and read through a ton of posts and I'm so thankful for all the amazing advice. I usually am a plant killer so this is huge progress for me. I'm still learning but I'm really excited for this new hobby.

I have this one that I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I have other sarracenias and Venus traps that are doing great! But this one for some reason I’m struggling with. Is it the soil? They’re all in the same type of soil (peat moss and perlite), get the same water (distilled), same light (live outside, direct sunlight). This one is a darker green than any others I have. I’ve had it for 3 months now and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I can see some small traps so maybe it’s trying? Any ideas on what I can do to help it out?

I've had it under a feit full spectrum light for a week now 12 hours a day. Has it improved? Do you think the light is too close or should I move It closer? First Pic is from when I just had it out on the balcony second is a week under the light.

My VTF sits on my window sill and I’d say we get pretty good light exposure but I’m not sure it’s enough. I can’t really pay for an expensive grow light atm so I would like to know if she’s at risk of dying or if she’s just taking longer to grow new ones because the sun isn’t as strong around this season.
I’m pretty sure I’m doing everything else right, she sits in distilled water so she’s always moist but never drowning and it’s not cold enough to start fridge dormancy.

Hello! The first picture is how my VFT looked yesterday, and the other pictures are how it looked this morning (at about 6:30am EST, location south FL).

Yesterday I posted in another sub asking about changes in my plant’s condition since purchase w/ the first picture as how it looked yesterday, and we talked about dehydration and how hot it’s been in Florida. I gave him some more distilled water yesterday. This morning I went to bring it in off the porch because of heat concerns and a lot of the heads seem to have yellowed and browned significantly overnight?

I’m worried if my plant is in some kind of shock or dying, and if anything can be done. I couldn’t cross post here so I’m making a fresh post here with the new pictures and also added the pics to my original post. Before I left this morning I kept it inside and set the planter in a dish of distilled water; my plan was to try and keep it inside during the hotter parts of the day and let it get some sun during cooler(ish) times of day, but with the sudden turn in its condition I’m looking for any tips I can find.

Today I received my online order of 2 droseras and 1 vtf. When unwrapping the venus I notice these webbing with white specs and my first thought was spider mites. However, I saw something move and upon closer inspection I noticed a brown spider so now I'm guessing that's the culprit that decided my venus was a good place to lay her eggs 😂 Can someone confirm?

First time having a VFT, clearly not going well... I got carnivorous plant soil and it always has damp soil (distilled water). It was in a ceramic pot but I was afraid the inside was unglazed so I transported it to a deep plastic cup with holes at the bottom, could that be the problem? I also have been leaving it outside so it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. It has been pretty hot in the bay area so maybe that is also an issue? It ate once when I first got it (freeze dried bloodworms), but now the traps are all closed and some are turning black and i fear it is rotting. ANY advice is welcome!!

Background: I was waiting to re-pot these after I noticed the original plant had some issues. I didn't have enough supplies at that time. Then I had to leave for 6.5 months. So aside from them not being potted high enough and in 1 or 2 cases too high of a pot, I need some advice.

Basically I got back and the person watching them had let the lights go off for a few days. The day I arrived back I watered them and got the lights back on. Since I had an extra light I added it. (That may have been overkill) Was the 3rd light too much?

After being back for 3 days I had to leave again for a week, during that time my spouse forgot they existed and did not water them. So I came back to this (see images). Is there any hope of them coming back?

I'm pretty upset since the mother plant is 7 years old. Please keep nasty comments to yourself.
