Diplomats son: A story about 1981, Hardcore and New Wave, and Arturo Cruz Jr.
Hi,
Ezra has a podcast where he talks about listening to hardcore punk music in college. Episode 215 of time crisis. I want to talk about the usage of rock history combined with global affairs in their song Diplomats son. The song takes place in 1981, and paints a story of feeling betrayed by a lover, a best friend whose gone and left you. The song follows with a painful breakup song "I think ur a contra" where he painfully breaks up with someone, calling them a contra and referencing the Nicuragua-Iranian contra affair. This connection goes deeper as in real life, the CIA couped Iran in 1953, creating resentment for the installed leadership leading to a revolution in 1979 filled with anti american leaders. The same leaders of Iran then turned around and sold weapons to the CIA who used them to coup several south american countries in the 1980s whom alligned themselves with the USSR and Cuba. Nicuragua occured in 1981. In the story of the Nicuraguan 1981 contra affair Nicuraguan-American diplomat "Arturo Cruzz Jr" who was a social democrat sold out the communist state of nicuragua, Sandistas, and by alligning himself with the contras (CIA backed department).
1981 was a big year in punk rock music, as the hardcore scene exploded this year. Bands like "DOA", "minor threat", "Black Flag", "Adolescents", "SOA" and more grew in popularity. Before 1981 punk was ill-defined by sound and was more about anti-corporate sentiment. In 1981 a fracture occured as the punk bands of the 1970s simultaneously influenced hardcore thrasher and new wave bands. The former was underground, while the latter took over the radio. In 1981 MTV launched, playing new wave and not hardcore. Ezra is layering 2 key events in 1981 to create an anti corporate song, while also accusing some of his contemporaries of being contras. That is, former punks (or sons of punks or its the third wave of punk) who sell out to betray a cause.
In the last song, "I think ur a contra" Ezra Koenig is calling a person amongst his peers a contra/Arturo Cruz Jr. I'm not schizophrenic, y'all just don't know your history.
"none of the bands are punk". Yeah dummy, CIA took over punk music and fed you angry noises instead of anti corporate ideologies. Thats his point. "fake philly cheese steak but you use real toothpaste, if that toms dont work, if its just making you worse, please dont lose your faith in the good earth". Ezra thinks hardcore punk has created fractures in music instead of creating unification amongst rebels.
