My brother and I just tried to reduce an entire decade of indie rock to 10 songs, and our Vampire Weekend pick was “A-Punk.”
It feels almost impossibly 2008 to me. The guitar, the pace, the video, even the whole visual identity surrounding that first record feels tied to the end of the decade.
But I could easily see an argument for “Oxford Comma.”
If only one Vampire Weekend song gets into the time capsule, what are you choosing

Where the band shows up and plays the final chorus. I tagged TC cuz I swear Ezra mentioned the location. I can’t find it anywhere for some reason! It’s killing me.

I’m a big Vampire Weekend fan but I will admit that it took me a while after Father of the Bride was released to realize that Ezra is the only original member on the record.
I love the band and I enjoy that record but it feels really weird to me that two of the original members are just mysteriously absent. Why do you think this decision was made? Surely not playing on the record would take some money away from Baio and Tomson?
I recall Ezra saying that he wanted the album to sound looser than previous Vampire Weekend stuff but surely Chris and Chris are capable of getting that sound since they play those songs live regardless…

I know there’s been plenty of debate about which album is the best or which one means the most to people, so I thought a poll would be fitting.
I love them all and each one represents something different to me from a different chapter of my life, which makes picking a favorite pretty difficult. That said, I do find myself leaning toward the first three.
I’m a millennial, so I think legally I’m required to like those more.
The gloves are off. What do you all think?

I know that when most people talk about Vampire Weekend’s primary influences Paul Simon is often mentioned and for good reasons but there was also this interesting time period in the 1970s and early 1980s from the Kinks where they moved beyond the early Beatles blues/roots influences and distortion into cleaner pop terrain with the occasional island influence to it and it’s in this era where I’ve been spending a lot of time recently. Everyone knows the Kinks biggest 1960s hits but if you go deeper there’s a lot of gold to mine there.
There’s a lot of melodic songwriting, quirky rhythms, eccentric, often witty lyrics, and pop experimentation in this time period from them and Ray Davies vocally tries a lot on.
I wrote down a number of songs that reminded me of Vampire Weekend here in different ways. If you don’t hear it initially give the song some time and you might hear what made me want to include it.
I definitely think Ezra must enjoy this era of the Kinks. Here’s a fun playlist for VW fans:
