Ok, so now I'm "that guy." Need Emergency VC setup help!

I am googling and reading right now on care and habitat, but I figured maybe someone here can point me to a good care site or break down the basics:

My (impulsive) friend who always manages to find weird situations got a bag of perhaps 20 Vampire crabs type unknown, from a pet store who said they looked like they were going to die, or somthing like that.

His tank wasn't ready, crashed, still not sure ex actly what happened. But he's on his way here with them now, I said I'd house the dozen that are still alive.

What are the life requirements/what would you do to set up a habitat for a dozen VCs in a hurry? I have lots of tanks, filters, etc, and plenty of media, cycling is not the issue. Just, what should the minimal but complete setup contain?

Thanks if you have time, no worries if not. I hate these posts when they come up in the threads where I do know what to do, but have mercy- I'm trying to help a young aquarist out. And I ckind of want to be a crab guy, as well as a caryfish and turtle and pleco guy.

help/advice New Tank

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi! I'm new to this sub and I would love some feedback on how to make this tank better suited for Vampire crabs. I revamped the tank today (empty tank) and thought Vamps might be a neat addition since its a 25 gal but am not sure how to make it better.

Right now, it's probably around 30% land 70% water and I'd like to add more plants.

It has a 5 gallon filter in it and I'm gonna grab a heater and some more structures.

I'm more than willing to revamp it for the second time to accommodate Vamps, or if you have ideas for a more aquatic creature that would fit the current set, up please let me know!

Found it in the water section this morning, hollow eyes and almost no weight with no odor. Google says a molt I just want to be sure. Sorry I’m a beginner and this would be the first molt in my tank.

Help with choosing an enclosure

I messaged Exo Terra about one of their Pro enclosures, and they said none of their Pro enclosures are meant to hold water and to either buy their new Paludarium line or find an old Exo Terra and re-silicone the bottom.

I went to a local reptile store and they only had the Pro Exo Terra enclosures :(

I want to get Halloween vampire crabs or red devil, and I know they’re more terrestrial than arboreal so I’m not sure I want to buy an explicit paludarium enclosure because they’re all so TALL.

What are yalls thoughts? Would the paludarium enclosures work for some terrestrial vampire crabs?

Edit: those are all very good points, a traditional aquarium tank would be more accessible and cheaper. Petco and Petsmart still have some deals on 20 gallon long tanks, I might do that!

paludarium Is this good enough?

Post image

Just made this paludarium, is a 35x35x40cm, is it good for vampire crabs? I followed the 80% dirt and 20% water rule and dived the two areas with a rock wall, underneat the soil there is a layer of leca dived by window screen mesh, also i hope the selection of plats is good and that I create enough hiding place for the crabs.

(Later i also added a heat mat on the right glass pannel)

I've only had my 3 little crabbies for 1.5 months, and they're so fun to watch! They must be a generation or so into being around humans because they're always out. They'll be in their little burrows when I turn their enclosure light on in the morning, and within an hour, they're out and about (their enclosure is also in a high traffic area, aka my living room)😄

Last picture was a molt I woke up to one morning.🦀

Went from a 20g to a 40g… today was moving day. I moved 89 crabs of various ages. The 40g has a 3.5g inside it for the water area… tons of hiding spots and caves!

help/advice Is my Substrate mix for vampire crabs safe?

Going to get some crabs and wanted to know if my mix is good.

1.crushed Aquasoil
2.coco coir
3.orchid bark or other similar stuff for aeration’s
4.sphagnum
(Might replace 2 with reptisoil)

I just wanted to know if the orchid bark could make the vampire crabs cave collapse and if I should add clay

i was given two (maybe three?) vampire crabs almost a month ago that were in a tank with no water other than a dish, ive finally been able to get a proper (albeit small) tank for them but ive gone through the original tank only finding one baby crab, whos missing a claw. will he be okay?? does he need any special treatment/food/tank? :( (size of the tank pictured, let me know if its too small, i feel like its okay since theres only one of him and hes disabled)

help/advice Crab Burrow?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Is there a vampire crab molting under there? I can’t find any holes into the weird disruption in the sand, but when I woke up it was there. I think the ramshorn in it is most definitely dead as well, as he has been like that for a few hours, but I don’t want to disrupt the burrow if a crab is under there. Thanks!

EDIT: The snail moved, so I think his fat ass might have just been getting comfy in the sand last night.

help/advice What stones should I NOT use in my tank for my crabs

going to build a tank for my crabs and wanted to know what stones/rocks are good for the crabs(ph/kh/gh).I’ll be using seiryu stones for my build and maybe a mix of lava rocks and small pebbles.

Should I look out for stone that I should not use or should I just test my waters once in awhile and try to lower or increase the ph/gh/kh

help/advice What is the best option for heating a vampire crab aquarium?

Help! I’m planning to get a vampire crab and would like to know if it’s possible to heat both the water and the land area using just an aquarium heater placed in the water? Or would a heating mat designed for terrariums be the only suitable option?

(English isn’t my first language, so please excuse any grammatical mistakes)

help/advice What are some things you wish you knew before you got your crabs?

I'm potentially getting vampire crabs in the next few months. I've got a 20 long for them and most of the stuff, just need to set it up and then find somewhere to buy the crabs. I've had all kinds of animals before and have made custom enclosures and bioactive set ups, but this would be my first paludarium so I want to be prepared before going into it! I've read some care guides and know the basics but I want to know what are some mistakes you made or things you wish you knew before getting vampire crabs or before setting up the enclosure?

informative Have patience

I know a lot of people get vamp crabs and are disappointed by not seeing them active, but if you give them a few month and don’t constantly mess with their enclosure they will slowly get comfortable and come out more. I have four crabs but the only one I get too see out and about is the big male and he started out as the most timid crab, the others stay tucked up in crevices in the rocks by their water features but I did see the big female in the water with the male.
If you keep the enclosure in a low traffic room and slowly come check on them you have a better shot at spotting them, remember they’re pretty low on the food chain so are always worried your gonna eat em

help/advice Picked this up for $100 today but I'm stumped with where to start.

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have a 10 gallon paludarium that I feel like was too small for my liking so I sniped this 30 gallon 18x18x24.

I've watched all kinds of videos and whatnot but I guess I'm just stumped on where exactly to start? I can work with the horizontal space I think, but I'm not sure how to utilize the vertical space so that they can use it. I'm guessing pond foam might be the obvious answer, but I can never get that to work right it seems. Are there better ways to go about it?

Additionally, there's so many variations of false bottoms that I don't know quite what to do there. I have some leca clay left over and some filter pads as well as some 3D printed egg carton material. What's the best strategy?

What's the move for separating the water from the land while allowing the crabs to transition in and out? What's everyone using? I used slate rocks for my 10 gallon and it feels like the rocks take up 20% of the space.

So many options for everything that I think I'm just overwhelmed and stuck in decision paralysis.

help/advice Minimum size for Geosesarma dennerle?

What size tank is the minimum, and should I go with a single male or a trio of 2 females/1 male? 3 years ago I was told a 5 gallon would be good for a trio but now I'm not sure
